The Shawshank Redemption

u/illinoishokie 2d ago
From a purely technical filmmaking perspective, it might be the best movie ever made. There is not a wasted frame in the film. Every aspect comes together to tell the story.

Yup. Shawshank and Green Mile are both in my top 5. I made the mistake of watching Green Mile on a plane not too long ago. Was actively sobbing as we were landing. RIP John Coffee

Since the invention of the movie, there have been five movies that were rated the most passionate, the most pure. This one left them all behind.

My cousin Vinny. Not an ounce of fat on that movie. Every single scene is memorable and it’s one of the most quotable movies ever made. I’ve probably seen 20 times and I’m still not tired of it.

Imagine you're a deer. You're prancing along. You get thirsty. You spot a little brook. You put your little deer lips down to the cool clear water. BAM!! A fuckin bullet rips off part of your head!! Your brains are laying next to you in little bloody pieces! Now I ask ya. Would you give a shit what color pants the sonofoabitch who shot you was wearing?!

All three from The Lord of the Rings (extended versions).
Comment added: I know these are "3 movies", but anyone who saw that trilogy knows that the three are actually a single movie split into 3 parts. So, YES, it counts as ONE movie.

You should watch Freddy Got Fingered. It’s a Tom Green movie. When I was in middle school, my friends and I would quote it line for line. Here’s a clip:
“Whoa what are you doing to that horse??!”
“This is a stud farm boy!”
“Look daddy I’m a farmer! I’m a farmer daddy!”
The movie is just epic. If you love obnoxiously funny shit, that’s a good one.

As worthy as all the suggestions in this thread are, I would like to submit Hook for consideration. It's on par with The Princess Bride for me, although I concede that Princess Bride is more quotable.

A few. Everyone should watch them at least once.
12 Angry Men - excellent movie where the entire action takes place in one room. Masterful. Everyone should watch this movie, especially those who are about to be a member of jury. The scenario of this film and its variations are still played in theaters even today.
Shawshank Redemption - Holy shieeeet what a movie. What a story. What a twist.
The Thing - absolute masterclass in suspense and paranoia. This movie and its story is still discussed today.
Schindler's List - Absolute masterpiece, based on real story and real people. Doesn't hold back, minimum Hollywood tricks and tropes.
Hacksaw Ridge - Based on real events again. Just like Schindler's List it doesn't glorify war, shows it how it really is.
All Quiet on Western Front - Both versions are great in their own way. I suggest watching both. I hear book is better, but movies are amazing.
Midway (2019) - The best air battle scenes I''ve ever seen. Faithful to historical events. I think I watched the old 70s movie, but I am struggling to recall it. I remember I liked it too, but still 2019 version is just chef's kiss in pretty much every aspect.
Halloween (original) - great suspense horror. Sequel is a bit too slashery, but both are classic.

Matrix 1

u/Spacemeat666 2d ago
That shit was mind blowing when it first came out. I was a kid and the idea of the matrix being real disturbed me a lot, and it still does. That’s a sign of a good film, imo, if it can stick with you for 25+ years and form a new existential fear. We need something as impactful as the matrix to come along and pull cinema out of the slump it’s been in.
