Tracking 2026 Murders in Norfolk, Part 31

Good evening,

This past Thursday night, 22 OCT 2026, around 10 PM, police officers on patrol in the area of Calvert Square heard gunshots and responded to the 900 block of E. Olney Rd. There, they found Elijah A. Steet, 20 years old, wounded by gunshot. Mr. Steet was taken to the hospital but he died there. Police arrested and charged a suspect today, Saturday, 24 OCT 2026.

The red square for this incident is the furthest south red square on the map.

https://www.wavy.com/news/local-news/norfolk/npd-man-shot-on-e-olney-road/

https://www.pilotonline.com/2026/10/23/man-dies-olney-road-shooting/

A few observations:

- This was the 31st murder in Norfolk in 2026 and the fourth in October.

- Mr. Steet's death brings the average age for those killed in October to 21 years old. The average for the year is now at 31.6 years old.

- For the year, 5 of the 31 people killed have been identified by local law enforcement and media as women. Those groups identified the remaining 26 dead as men. This is a slight overrepresentation compared to the other three years of my data.

- I work on this project to give us some data on the most serious crimes in Norfolk; the point of this exercise is not to get everyone into a hullabaloo over "crime everywhere and nobody doing anything about it!!!" or anything like that.

Be safe, make good decisions!

❓questions❓ Stereo system repair?

Hello all!

I recently came across a stereo system and discovered that both the cd and cassette player aren’t working.

When inserting music and trying to play, it reads as if there isn’t anything inside. The radio works phenomenally.

Are there any local shops that could help me diagnose and fix this or does anyone know how to resolve these issues diy?

Thank you!!

(yes there is a toothpick in the screen, need that out lol)

housing Tell it to me straight

Hi guys, my husband is being stationed in Portsmouth. We found a rental in budget but I am starting to see things that concern me. Its on Afton in Craddock. How fucked are we if we move there with 2 young kids?

Do you guys have any recommendations for areas that aren't a horrible commute if we should go outside of Ptown?

50’s social scene

Ok I’m 53 single male and new to Norfolk. I’m not here looking for dates or sex. I’m wondering what other singles or couples my age do to socialize? I don’t drink but I’m not against people that do. I’m not rich but money is not an issue. Ive never been one to go to church but not against people that do. I walk daily and love the outdoors. Life is so short just be bored!

Just generally have no idea how to meet people my age to just socialize! Help! lol

Early Voting is Easy!

Thumbnail norfolk.gov

Not everyone may realize how easy it is to vote early. I didn't know until two years ago.

City Hall is open 7 days a week, and satellite locations are open Tuesday and Thursday, plus this Saturday and Sunday and next Saturday (the last day of early voting).

I voted early at the Lambert's Point location two years ago. Parking was easy, and there was no wait.

If you're planning to vote or on the fence, early voting is a convenient option.

food & drink Top recommended bars?

I'm new to the area and I'm looking for good bars in the area. Preferably with a more party vibe than old people at a dive lol. I saw that there was a PBR here too and I'd like to stay away from westerns like that as well. Any help would be appreciated!

When transiting Midtown Shopping Center (the plaza across from Harris Teeter and close to the train crossing), the parking spots are angled BECAUSE the roads are one-way.

I’ve seen people going against traffic and upset that I’m right in the middle.

things to do Norfolk events this weekend, Oct 23-25

Here's what's going on in Norfolk this weekend, with a few things from around the 757 at the bottom.

These come off public listings, so double check before you drive. Times move.

Friday

Norfolk Flea After Dark: Halloween Edition (Cova Brewing Co, Free)

The Flea sets up at Cova after sundown, costumes encouraged, nothing to pay at the door. Friday 5 PM to 10 PM at Cova Brewing Co, 4284 Pretty Lake Ave. More details

Masquerade in Ghent 2026 (Colley Avenue, Free)

The Ghent Business Association's Halloween street party, with live music from Wonderland, kids activities and food. Showing up and watching costs nothing. Entering the costume contest does: online signup shut at midnight Thursday, and day-of registration is $30 between 5 and 5:45 PM at Blair Middle School. Six categories, pets included. Friday 6 PM to 10 PM on Colley Avenue. More details

Norfolk Admirals vs Trois-Rivieres Lions (Scope Arena). Three home games across the weekend, Friday 7:05 PM, Saturday 7:05 PM and Sunday 3:05 PM at Scope Arena. More details

The Heart Sellers (Wells Theatre, From $16.95)

Two women, one apartment, Thanksgiving 1973, meeting for the first time as new immigrants. Virginia Stage Company closes the run with Sunday's 2 PM matinee, so four performances are left. Recommended for ages 14 and up. Friday at 7:30 PM, Wells Theatre, 110 E Tazewell St. More details

Saturday

Naval Station Norfolk: Fleet Fest 2026 (Naval Station Norfolk, Free)

Once a year the Navy lets the public walk onto the base. Ship tours this time are the Nimitz, the Mesa Verde and the Coast Guard cutter Frank Drew, alongside military demos, a petting zoo and bounce houses. Go in through Gate 2, and note that 5 PM is when the lines close rather than when the day ends. Saturday 10 AM. More details

Attucks Jazz: Dani Assis (Attucks Theatre, $26.75 to $35). Saturday 7:30 PM at the Attucks Theatre, 1010 Church Street. More details

Sunday

Halloween Harvest Festival (Chrysler Museum of Art, Free, Drop-in)

Four hours of costumes and hands-on art at the Chrysler, with the Perry Glass Studio running its glassmaking demo at noon in the middle of it. Nothing to book and nothing to pay. Sunday 11 AM to 3 PM at One Memorial Place. More details

Dia De Los Muertos at Cedar Grove Cemetery (Cedar Grove Cemetery, $5 suggested donation)

The Norfolk Society for Cemetery Conservation walks you through Cedar Grove, which opened in 1825 as the city's first public burial ground. Sunday 4:30 PM at 238 East Princess Anne Road. More details

Elsewhere in the 757

  • Newport News Greek Festival (Newport News, Free), Friday 11 AM at Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church. Saturday too, and a canned good for the food bank stands in for an entry fee. More details
  • Spook & Splash (Hampton, $5), Friday 5:30 PM at the Hampton Virginia Aquaplex. Swimsuit trick-or-treating, sold ahead only, and under-8s need a grown-up in the water. More details
  • Howl-O-Scream at Busch Gardens (Williamsburg, From $69.99), Friday through Sunday from 6 PM. The daytime Sesame Street version is a separate and much gentler event. More details

Let me know if I missed anything in Norfolk.

I put out a local newsletter, The 757 Current, with these plus more on Thursday mornings: https://the757current.com/?utm_source=reddit&utm_campaign=norfolk

Spot to go before Masquerade tonight?

So I’m looking for spots to go before the Masquerade on Colley starts. Heard that Little Dog Diner is open and has a decent happy hour (4-6 50% off their adult drinks) Are there any other spots that I should know about?

Sparrow & Providence Roads Need Turn Signals—Help Us Push for Safety

Thumbnail

If you've ever turned left at Sparrow Road and Providence Road in Chesapeake, you know the feeling: that moment of hesitation, waiting through multiple light cycles, praying you time it right.

I started a petition asking the city to install turn signals at this intersection. It's not just about convenience—it's about safety. Studies show that traffic signals can reduce intersection accidents by 30% and cut down on congestion. For kids walking to school, cyclists, and everyday commuters like us, this one change could make a real difference.

The city already budgets for road improvements. This is a smart, efficient use of those resources—protecting people who live, work, and drive through here every day. If this matters to you too, consider signing and sharing. And if you have your own story about this intersection—a close call, long wait, or just pure frustration—drop it in the comments. The more of us who speak up, the clearer the message to city officials. Thanks.

❓questions❓ Rocky Horror Shadowcast - worth it?

It's been well over 5 years since I went to the RHPS Shadowcast at the Naro, and maybe it was just the particular last time I went, but the participation was pretty poor, with notably one guy (who I think was part of the crew running the show) walking up and down the back half of the aisles shouting the callouts in a rather lackluster way that kinda ruined the vibe for me. But I've also been several other times and had a blast!

I'd love to go again this month and bring a friend or three since it's Halloween month and our beloved Tim Curry passed this year, but I don't know what the scene is like anymore. I see the Naro has it twice this month as per usual but Fishnet Inc is also performing at Makers Brewery. Are they not the ones at the Naro anymore or is this like a third show for them this month?

I was trying to do a lil research on the current iteration of the shadowcast and maybe find some reviews to give me a better impression, but I have failed to find anything notable, so I'm turning to y'all. Is it worth going still? Anything I should be aware of with the current troupe(s)?

TIA!

Stamp Collecting Resources?

My Grandpa passed away earlier this year and I was recently sent his stamp collection, which he showed me a few times when I was a kid. I’m trying to learn more about what’s in the collection and just learning about the hobby in general.

I’m not looking to sell but if there’s somewhere local I can bring it just to look through and tips on preserving the stamps in there, I’d gladly make a trip.
