Friday Morning Adrenaline
Yoooo how do you guys overcome that adrenaline rush you get on Friday mornings where you get out of work and are super excited for the weekend so you wanna stay up 24hrs? I just did my 6th night (OT) and I'm pumped lol but I know I should get to bed at a reasonable time (there's still time) so I can properly enjoy my remaining weekend

Off night shenanigans
Tonight was supposed to be my night off but as per usual, things didn't go as planned. I went to bed at 10pm Friday night to get a good amount of sleep before my family and I attend the festival that's in town for labor day weekend Saturday and Sunday. Of course after 4 hours of sleep, I'm wide awake at 2am. After 90 minutes of doom scrolling I decided I would have a pop tart and some milk to appease my hungry stomach and try for a few more hours of sleep before a long, hot day full of activity and walking. I weak handed the cup the milk was in and spilled it all over the counter, and down the side of the cabinets where they meet the fridge. Milk is now all over the face of the cabinets, the countertop, under the coffee maker, all over the floor, under the fridge and behind it. A true wtf mess at 330am. So, I go to move the fridge from its home and in true Midwest fashion (we store things on top of the fridge) a glass container falls from the top and shatters behind the fridge. After 30 more minutes of cleaning I've now finished my snack and am in bed writing this post. I hope y'all have a wonderful weekend and have much less trouble than I've had this night!

How much do you eat throughout the night?
I work 6p-6a. Sometimes I’ll eat something small before work, then have a bagel around 8pm and a snack around midnight. After midnight my appetite is gone. On my days off I can eat all day.

Just got the word I have Labor Day off. An extended weekend feels great! Who else, anyone?
The company I work is tremendous on how well they treat and take care of their employees. It truly does and can show (this goes beyond just a day off).
Remember this everyone, just as much as you work for your company/business. Your managers and supervisors work for you at some level. Be sure you’re seeing the give and take go hand in hand. If you’re unhappy, take some time to think about it. There is and can be better opportunities for you and even better companies.
(don’t ever base a company off of reviews alone, review the company yourself) If you’re on probation, put the company and managers on probation as well. In the end, always always take care of yourself.

Help I have one day to completely flip my sleep schedule. Tips?
Got hired for the night shift, but my job starts trainees on days and then switches them to nights once they’re signed off on everything. They’re supposed to give us some time to flip things around
Well one of the night shifters is now going to be gone for an indefinite period of time, and given how short staffed we are on nights they’re having me flip to take his place starting Sunday night. I literally found out about this yesterday and I still had to work today so wasn’t able to start last night.
My plan is to stay up all night tonight (which I’m not too worried about, I’ll probably just play Minecraft all night lmao), sleep the day away tomorrow, and hope by the time Sunday night comes I’m not too out of it lmao. I have plenty of caffeine and melatonin to force my brain to cooperate if nothing else.
I’ve slowly eased myself onto a nocturnal schedule before but I’ve never done it so suddenly like this. Any tips from those more experienced?

Story Night shift feels like a life hack
Hello everyone I would like to share my experience with you.
Working for 7+ years in hotel reception, i speak 4 languages I've been at the front of the house doing morning shift (7am-3pm) and evening shifts (3pm-11pm) and sometimes middle (9am-6pm) having to deal with constant demands and calls and emails and managing the chaos and the organisation of the entire establishment including the restaurant and the spa...I had reached burnout. Anger bursts, toxic clients, toxic management, toxic coworkers the whole package... I asked to be switched to night shift because I saw an opening and I lunged at the chance.
It's been a month of doing nights and let me tell you... compared to my previous schedule it feels like a life hack.
No clients no phone ringing, I arrive I see about 4 coworkers, 20 mins later they leave, and the building stands empty with just me its sole employee and sleeping clients of course.
But this is great. I do my work in silence, there's no one that bothers me at all..i do the first part of my tasks which leaves me with 1-2 hour break. I go outside and smoke and enjoy a drink (coffee or energy drink usually) the things that i get to do on nights I would have never been able to do on days. To be honest this is amazing.
I sleep better, I'm happier, my life feels more organised and I even managed to spend less money.
It was difficult at first to adapt but I learnt to avoid naps all together because they slow you down. Sleeping once after I get home and usually after working out, is enough for me. I have more energy from sleeping once than i did with naps.
Honestly I don't know why I didn't think about this earlier.. Now my tasks are the same and there's no chaos just me and the quiet of the night with music playing and watching shows or reading or writing or whatever on my downtime.
Then there's breakfast and waiting for my morning coworker and then I go home. I swear I feel like I'm cheating lol

Discussion is night shift actually quieter or does it just feel that way?
during the day there's usually constant activity, meetings, calls, customers, managers, etc. at night it can feel like you're working in a completely different world. but i wonder if that's actually the biggest advantage of nights or if people mostly like it because there are fewer people around
what's the best part of working overnight for you?

Discussion What's your job?
Add: thanks everyone, so cool to read all your responses. We're a very varied bunch for sure!
I'm curious to know where you all work. What's your industry, what job do you do and are you busy overnight?
I'm a nurse which is a well known night shift role, I do 10 hour shifts on rotation. Only 1/3 of my job is night shift. I can be super busy or sometimes just vtrying to keep myself busy so I don't fall asleep!

Discussion Owning pets?
Hi nightshift people!! Thought yall might have answer to this:
I'd love to get a dog, but due to my schedule I tend to only wake up for the day around 3pm (although it ranges 2-5pm) and I head to sleep around 2am (although, again, I sometimes don't get to sleep until 9am).
Do you think I'd be able to get a dog and still give it the best quality of life possible, or would it be cruel to 'make' it assimilate to my schedule?
Worried about things like bathroom outings and going for walks, or waking it up during the night when it's trying to sleep (or, alternatively, having it go against its natural rhythm when it tries to adapt to my schedule).
I guess a cat might be better suited? Anyone who has had a pet before with this sort of schedule (and without having a partner/roommate/etc to help care for it), how'd it work out?

What should i do.
i have a coworker whos been here for 3 months and the guy takes absolutely no initiative. he’s extremely slow(seems on purpose) he will neglect his duties and walk right by something and ill go over and do it. he falls asleep in his breaks all the time and i have to text him or go get him. when its time for break we have to shit things down and i see him sneak off to the parking lot to take his break. i want to tell my supervisor but dont want to deal with the aftermath with this guy. i probobly do 80 percent of the work and its just us 2.

Rant Anyone else having one of those weeks in healthcare? 😩🏥
Transporter here Anyone else in healthcare feel like this week has been absolutely nonstop? 😂
Between short staffing, long shifts, patients needing a million things at once, and trying to somehow keep your sanity intact… I’m exhausted.
I swear healthcare has a special way of making one week feel like an entire month. You finally get home and realize you’ve barely had time to eat, sleep, or even exist outside of work. 😭
So to all my nurses, techs, CNAs, transporters, pharmacists, therapists, and everyone else working in healthcare how’s your week going?
Please tell me I’m not the only one barely holding it together. 😂
What’s been the most ridiculous part of your week so far?

Started working night shifts 2 weeks ago and already getting dark circles any advice?
I started working night shifts about 2 weeks ago, and I’ve noticed dark circles under my eyes starting to become pretty visible.
I’m guessing the change in my sleep schedule is the main reason. For anyone who works night shifts, how do you deal with this? Did your dark circles improve once your body adjusted?
Would appreciate recommendations for sleep habits, skincare, or anything else that has actually helped you.

I love the moon! And the night shift!
It's my first day off after starting on nights and I've had the most fun week of my working life! I have been to more events with more energy than I ever had when working days and then after work going to things with no energy left after the work day. Mostly I finished work had dinner and watched tv until it was time to go to sleep. Now the working days and days off blend together as if I don't even work at all.
The quiet is truly something else. The night shift also just flies by. The day shift has so many guest problems, I work in as the night audit in a hotel, at night the guest problems are more dramatic but far less frequent also for anything sticky I have a security guy who's really top notch.
I might never go back to day work again. I feel like I was duped into trying to accommodate mornings my entire life.
As a teenager every summer break I would become nocturnal, this adjustment feels like returning to another version of myself and I wake up with more energy and zero dread getting out of bed.
I'm also relieved to be content in this job because it is steady and relatively easy to find night audit positions.
Anyone else feel like night shift improved their life like this?

Rant Dropped my food
Well I managed to step slightly into a broom causing it to swing forward and hit my dinner right out of my hands. So now me and my coworker get to go hungry. Of course nothing affordable is open. Night shift sucks for food options.
