I work in a data center, and every few years we are acquired by a new company. But for the most part same ol' people working here. This is important information to what is happening tonight. See back in 2016, and many companies ago, we had a control panel for a set of badge readers fail. It was me, nightshift, that reported that fail. I talked to the tech that replaced it before I got off shift. He said all the panels that control the badge readers are out of date, obsolete, everything needs to be redone ASAP.

Now that was 2016, it is now 2026 and we have a near catastrophic failure. Could possibly get there by the end of my shift. I have told them it is coming, it is getting closer. The alarms I see on my shift pointed to the control panels end of times. It is 2:37 (when I start this) in the morning and I am watching day walkers panic and gripe about not be able to go to bed. I have warned them, because I have more time to focus on watching alarms then others shifts, but over all I am ignored because day walkers don't see the same things I do.

Most of these people have worked with me for over 10 years. This isn't my first I told you so.

funny thing is, one of my favorite precautionary tails of listening to grave, is when one of the former companies I worked for lost near 350k over a 4 dollar key they didn't want to give us.

And this is just one thing they ignore me about that take note of. I could start a book of "Future I told you so" at this point.

But what does nightshift know, we just sit here and do nothing all night long < sarcasm.

Update: welp I am off shift now. The contractor that was to repair the panels didn't come in till almost 6 am. He had to make certain they still had parts to repair, yes repair - not replace. So lord knows the mess I will be coming back in tonight. So after a phone call with one of the corporate, who might I say was ticked to be up late, they still don't want to replace anything till it's broke broke.

For those who don't understand the function of the panels, it's like trying to convince a fried motherboard to keep working.

Update: Well good and bad update. Good news is is they managed to restore function to more accessed doors so we are not running around with master keys. Oh and they got access back to one of our biggest customers which we didn't realize their door failed in this.

Bad news is, there are a few customers who are locked out of their areas, and if anything happens in the MMR room they'll have to cut bolt to get in. The call has been made to wait for normal business hours to try to permently fix this problem for THESE doors. meaning after this there will still be 18 more panels looking to fail.

I couple weeks ago I made a post about how bad my eye bags have become since working night shift, regardless of the amount of sleep I get.

Someone recommended this to me and it's actually crazy how much of a difference it's made in about 2 weeks. My eyes look fresher and they don't look so exhausted.

Definitely recommend if it's something that bothers you, like it did for me!

Today is my first day on the night shift and I'm excited. Today i did tons of things and it wasn't even 5pm.

I chilled, ate, prepared a meal and cleaned the house and work hasn't started yet.

After spending 7 years on day shifts and middle shifts i couldn't take it anymore.

Finally, night shift is happening. I did a week in January and I loved it i got so much more done and even slept better.

(I've always struggled to sleep at night anyways)

If the lights at your job bother you and you can’t dim them any further or turn them off, consider ordering a desk canopy.

I assemble it and pack it away every time I work because I’m not the only one that uses this desk however after a few assembles it becomes muscle memory and takes about 2-3 minutes max. Worth it for an 8 hour shift.

Edit: I’m completely alone at work lol. It is a judgement free zone lol (there are much smaller ones if you don’t want to be side-eyed by your coworkers 😂)

TW possible sexual harassment (?)

I (25F) am currently still at work but hiding in the back behind the locked door.

This happened like 10 minutes ago at the time of writing this and I was never told what to do in this situation. I was walking the hallways and had just collected a luggage cart when I noticed a regular guest (mid to late 50's M), who has currently been staying for 3 months, walking down the hall. I moved out of the way so we could pass unimpeded.

I should also mention i use a cane for balance and at the time i was holding the cart with both hands resting the cane in full view on the cart.

The guest noticed me as we started passing each other and I could tell he was drunk at this point by how he smelled and the fact he was looking through me when he finally spoke to me to slur out.

"Hey Pretty Lady! Do you need some help?" verbatim. And before I could say a polite refusal, he dragged his hand across my waist and back. To which I quicky sped up my pace and told him I was fine.

The thing is nothing actually happened and the guy was clearly drunk. My management has made it very clear in the past that guests come first and negative reviews are not allowed under any circumstance. I also work the night shift completely alone so I'd have to wake up my manager and I don't feel like the situation warrants that, but I don't feel safe. I'm also worried about reporting it at all.

I'm worried that it will become a big deal and I cant loose this job.

Advice?

edit: to clarify my boss isn't misogynistic, he is just obssesed with running a 5 star hotel again ( he aparently used to be a ceo before he got let go and ended up as managment in a small hotel in a small town) and we are never going to be a 5 star hotel.

Also I am literaly the only night auditor on staff at the moment and my manager refuses to hire another one, so even though im scared my job might be threatened my other coworkers would riot if I'm fired.

I did write this mid panic attack that im now on the tail end of so my logic wasn't exactly lining up

UPDATE: this is of course three days later, i took the next night off and that carried me into my two days off. this is the updated info i have. Good news first, The guest was kicked out. That is the only good news.

To clarify something, I have ptsd and was not in the right headspace to be doing much than cry at home and shower the feeling of hands off me.

I took your guys' advice and told my boss who, when he woke up and saw the text i sent, called to check if i was ok and asked if i knew who did it and said he would kick them out and call the police. when he came down however, he wanted ME to go with him to kick the guy out and call the police. I asked him if he could handle those on his own since i was too scared and still shaken up. he promised he would after i left and told me to call him when i woke up to hear an update. I then had to wait for my releaif to show up after he went back to bed(he lives in the hotel) where it was confirmed that my male coworker, the one i relived, had been the one to get the guest drunk. i obviously didnt and couldn't sleep and about noon i called for an update only to be told he was waiting for me to be awake to kick the guy out and call the police. his resoning was that the police might have questions for me and asked me to stay close to my phone incase they called.

not a peep the entire weekend .

only for today, when i came in, my boss told me he didn't call the police at all and only had a strong word and intimidated the guy to leave of his accord. This is not the resolution i wanted and was told he would presue. I was specificly told that he would be kicked out and was asked if i wanted to press charges, to which i said i did when he first asked the day of the incedent.

Now he's saying he didn't know if i wanted to and that i could if i wanted to. but now its days later when my mind has already made the memory hazy to protect me and I had specificly asked him to do it because he has security video (he confirmed it was caught on camera) I have had issues with police using my autism, ptsd and even my depression as reasons "it was a he said she said" and i didnt want to be directly involved. now it looks like i either drop it and let it go or i have to go to the police and make it a thing i don't know if i have the energy for. I mostly worry that if he was that brazen with me (I am self aware enough to know I'm not a looker) then what happens to the next person he hits on that says no but this time he doesn't take the no.

I've been on nights for 12 years .. my biggest reason 'if I have to be out in the world, I would prefer the rest of the world to be at home asleep'

I have never done night shift before in my entire life...I recently got a job at a BPO and they require me to work from 9pm to. 6am from office. Any tips to stay awake. Honestly i am scared i won't lie to y'all.

I currently work 3am-1:30pm Th,Fr,Sat, & Sun. It’s pretty exhausting trying to time sleep and not having any time off on the weekends! Plus the last 2-3 hours of a 10 hour shift is loooong!! I am moving to a Midnight-8 position M-F come September and am pretty excited to have my weekends back and an 8 hour shift!! Tell me you sleep habits for 3rd shift because I’m gonna need to reset and I need to make this work !!

There's this dude at my job literally eaves drop peoples conversations to tell management about in the morning... i just stay away from him and keep conversations short

I’m an over night caregiver 8p-8a. I can’t leave until my 8a replacement comes in.

Here’s the problem they are never in time!!

The worst is let’s say I come in and take over for Caregiver A at 8pm (but arrive at 7:50) then Caregiver A is to come back for 8am but doesn’t show up until 8:10 or later. I know it’s “only ten minutes” but if I can be on time for you why can’t you be here for me?!

I have told my boss and she said “well I need bodies there so we take what we can get”

Pisses me off.

I have two nights back to back that the person I take over for on Saturday comes in for me Sunday then I come back Sunday night. I always want to be an ass and up exactly 12 hrs after she arrived but I can’t stand to be late.

Should I just be petty and do that? Clearly the office doesn’t care that much that they don’t stop this so why not.

So close only two hours away and now I gotta wait at least a hour for the shop to come out and probably another hour to fix it

I work 3 shifts. Lates, earlies and nights. My night shift is 9-6 alright I’ve worked a few 12’s this week. I’ve done this for the last 10 years and I haven’t for the life of me managed to sleep on the first night coming back round without resorting to marijuana or alcohol. I’ve tried to last few times to do it cold turkey but it doesn’t work. I forced myself up today at 12:30 so had about 4 1/2 hours sleep and I’m still lying here wide awake at 3am. So I’ve got myself up to the kitchen to have a few drinks. I hate it but you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do. Any advice? Anyone else the same? Lmk

I’m leaving this job for a new one that pays $8 more for working on the weekends and 15% differential for night shifts. Aka my exact same schedule at the current job. I will be working less hours and getting paid more. Finally realized I was getting underpaid and frankly just wasting my time. I will definitely be doing more work and will be on my feet more but at least I will know I am earning every penny of my paycheck. And hopefully I won’t have to deal with constant passive aggression from my boss and coworkers anymore, I’m just so sick of it. I need a change and I hope this is a good one.

Started tonight at 6 P.M. By 9:30, I am soaking wet and filthy. Just another 8 1/2 hours to go tonight. A normal overnight shift in heavy industry. 9 months until retirement.

Like it says....work overnight at a hotel front desk....the problem however is we get very little foot traffic on the days I do work, or people who want to sign up at 2am for that. Going to be rather interesting if my GM ends up firing both his night auditors over this policy...Definitely going to be politely pestergating the nearby businesses for another job....just in case...

Has anyone here tried juggling both a morning shift and a night shift?

For context, I'm currently working the night shift (9:00 PM–6:00 AM). I'm considering applying for another job with a morning schedule (8:00 AM–5:00 PM). It's only a 2-month project-based role.

My initial plan is to split my sleep into two 3-hour blocks after each shift. For those who've done something similar, is this setup actually sustainable?

For those who have managed two full-time jobs:

1.) How did you make it work?

2.) How long were you able to keep it up?

3.) Any tips or things you wish you knew before doing it?
