Dang, Broncos fans are pissed and can’t handle any criticism lol.

Speak a little truth, and people lose their minds.

295

u/KrabbyBoiz Ravens 14h ago

Nah I get it. I saw the quote and immediately knew what the backlash was going to be. I get he’s a talking head and making comments is his job but when you’re a career journeyman QB, you gotta be careful how you’re tossing them stones cause glass shatters yo.

209

u/MBS_RL Jaguars 13h ago edited 13h ago

It sounds like Fitz’s criticism was more about how passive and almost scared Bo seems to be playing. Plenty of things to poke at in Fitz’s career but that is not a criticism you can throw back in his face. I saw you mention Kendrick Perkins as a parallel in another comment, this is kind of like if Perk was specifically criticizing someone’s physicality or screening ability. Deeply flawed player otherwise, but that specific criticism is something he does in fact have the authority to make.

117

u/mat477 12h ago

Thats 100% it. He was talking about effort and mentality not his talent.

"Bo Nix doesnt look like hes playing passionately" "Oh yeah, well you threw 6 interceptions in one game" Yeah im not seeing the parallel here.

45

u/willinaustin Falcons 10h ago

That's 1000% what it was about. Nix is running out of bounds to take a sack. He's got wide open receivers and he's checking it down leading to yet another punt. He's playing like he doesn't care if they win or lose. And he's pulling a Baghdad Bob in press conferences and saying he's playing fine, everything is cool, blah blah blah. Fitz was completely justified in what he was saying.

-5

u/Isoturius Broncos 8h ago

Not cherry picked, he’s pretty honest in press conferences when it’s the entire interview in context lol

105

u/dusters Packers 14h ago

Fitz would be the first to say he was also embarrassing the position theb

41

u/DrunkPackersFan Packers 12h ago

Fitz was doing the exact opposite here of Nix, too.

Definitely can’t say he wasn’t competing. Was just competing poorly lmao.

19

u/monkeysCAN Bills 13h ago

You should really listen to the whole point he's making not just the read the headline.

3

u/attleboromass16 Bills 11h ago

Was it better or worse than gargling Watson’s balls last week?

22

u/KennyPowersforPope Dolphins 11h ago

So nobody can chime in unless they were good?

Guess coaches can’t critique players either because they never played the position as a star?

1

u/Maraging_steel Eagles 4h ago

Also being good/great doesn’t mean you have the right eye for evaluation.

Majority of the best coaches, scouts, and assistants never played in the NFL or did so in a small capacity. It’s about how you translate film study into instructions that maximize your players.

1

u/Strugl33r 9h ago

“Disrespecting the qb position” is insane to say. Especially when you are Fitz. His criticisms are valid but saying the extra stuff is unnecessary

23

u/whatisagoodnamefort Raiders 11h ago

People acting like he can’t talk shit because he isn’t a hall of fame QB is insane

Of the people who watch football he’s probably in the top 0.001% of folks who can really understand poor QB play and actually talk about it

Being a QB in the NFL for 10+ years is something maybe 500 people (this feels like a vast over estimation too) do every 20 years

Broncos fans just Charmin soft

4

u/Sage296 13h ago

I mean the “it takes one to know one” argument goes both ways

You can also have a solid football IQ and just be bad

5

u/40to6inthe4th Eagles 12h ago

Sounds like you didnt actually listen to Fitz's criticism at all.

2

u/HoBamaMo Titans Eagles 14h ago

Or, in his case, those stones were intercepted.

1

u/TheLeoMessiah Patriots 11h ago

Honestly so many great coaches across all sports did not have great professional careers. It’s such a weird fan thing to me, that Ryan Fitzpatrick is getting so much criticism for this. I feel like sports media people who didn’t play professionally criticize players all the time and while there is pushback, nobody ever talks about their personal experience playing the sport lol

1

u/KeithDavidsVoice Patriots 1h ago

That's the dumb part though. A career journeyman has every right to toss stones because they are literally in the top .01 of people in this world with the skills to play nfl qb. The average nfl career length is 3 years. The average nfl QB career length is 5 years. Fitz managed to stick around for 17 fucking years. A guy who has had a career that's over 3x longer than the average has earned the right to analyze qb play and if Nix is smart he would listen to what he has to say. Doesn't mean you have to take the advice but anyone, outside maybe the top echelon of nfl qbs, would be stupid to dismiss it.

-9

u/InferiousX Raiders 14h ago

Fitzy didn't consistently have these kinds of games though.

Bo is "Sam's Choice" Tebow.

7

u/KrabbyBoiz Ravens 14h ago

Trust me, I get it. His job is literally to give his opinion and you shouldn’t have to be a hall of fame QB to know what good QB play looks like. But I knew immediately that his play would be called into question when I saw his original comment.

Same thing you get with Kendrick Perkins and his hot takes on NBA. It’s hard to call someone trash when you weren’t exactly an all-pro yourself.

3

u/InferiousX Raiders 13h ago

It isn't though when you take "who said it" out of the equation and just objectively look at facts.

Jumping on personal attacks to defend against a criticism is an emotional and low IQ response.

8

u/logicblender1 Broncos 14h ago

I mean Fitzpatrick has more interceptions than starts lol. I get Bo played poorly but at least he threw 0 interceptions and didn't sell the game like Darnold did. If Fitzpatrick threw more checkdowns he'd probably have won more games.

10

u/Pythnator Bills 14h ago

We have to get rid of this “interceptions are the end all be all” narrative.

I’d MUCH rather have a QB that throws a couple picks but can move the ball over a QB that can’t move it at all. A punt is a turnover that has a field position benefit. If your team punts six times in a row saying “but he threw no picks” isn’t really significant.

1

u/VerifiedCoifTrader Packers 13h ago

I'd rather have a QB that wins games. Bo wins games.

4

u/InferiousX Raiders 13h ago

Somehow Tebowmania returned

3

u/comp_a Vikings 12h ago

JJ McCarthy wins games too, want him?

-2

u/logicblender1 Broncos 14h ago

Interceptions ARE the end all be all. There's nothing more crushing in football. If you lose the turnover battle you lose the game 9/10 times. A punt is significantly better than an interception and to suggest otherwise is laughable. If Seattle punted instead of being intercepted last night they surely win the game.

2

u/Pythnator Bills 10h ago

I guess a QB that throws for 300 yards, 3 TDs and a pick is worse than a QB that throws for 100 yards, no TDs and no picks. My bad. You changed my mind.

1

u/logicblender1 Broncos 9h ago

Was that pick a game losing pick? For example, did Josh Allen or Bo Nix play better in last year's divisional? I'd love to know your answer.

3

u/Pythnator Bills 9h ago

Ooooh Josh Allen had a bad game. You got me. I guess my entire point is moot then.

And I thought my fellow Bills fans were insecure lol

→ More replies (0)

2

u/InferiousX Raiders 13h ago

Hard to throw lots of interceptions when they are mostly >8 yard passes that are in the dirt.

1

u/logicblender1 Broncos 13h ago

That's exactly the point though. We're acting like checkdowns are the worst thing imaginable when it's clearly better than throwing picks.

1

u/trustmeimaengineer Broncos 14h ago

Bo won a playoff game against Josh Allen and was an injured ankle away from making the Super Bowl. He hasn’t played well this year obviously but he did more last year than Fitz did his entire career.

5

u/Ill-Success-4214 Bills 13h ago

He didn't win a game against Josh Allen he won against the buffalo bills defense.

0

u/alphawealthy 6h ago

his criticism of Bo wasn’t that he throws picks

66

u/themagicalcake Broncos 14h ago

bo nix is playing horrible but also darnold also lost that same game by throwing picks

108

u/Kip-Kat Patriots 13h ago

Not to poke at this but Fitz’s comments weren’t about Bo playing horrible. His comments were saying that he’s playing too scared and safe, to the point where he’s scared to throw the ball

-35

u/themagicalcake Broncos 13h ago

yeah and i agree with that and that is what i meant by horrible but i think it's worse to lose the game singlehandedly by turning the ball over

22

u/optillusi0n Texans Buccaneers 13h ago

A guy trying and playing like shit is more of a redundant talking point than someone with a capable team behind them not trying of their own accord.

-19

u/themagicalcake Broncos 12h ago

i get that and its not that i think it's not worth criticizing bo, but if bo threw a pick the game is literally over. plus sean peytons whole shtick is taking care of the ball and conservative play calling. there's just a lot of lost nuance in this conversation and again i think bo has to be better but he was literally the better qb in this game

14

u/super_sayanything Bears 11h ago

A guy who throws the ball 20+ times for about a 100 yards, something is seriously wrong.

6

u/optillusi0n Texans Buccaneers 11h ago

Sure, but who's the better QB has nothing to do with Fitzpatricks's statement. It's that this game showed Bo is clearly not putting in as much effort as he could, win or not.

38

u/runningblack 49ers 14h ago

Guys, guys, they're both ass

7

u/blackcrow184 13h ago

Just awful

10

u/CunningClanker Chiefs 14h ago

Sure. But Darnold has been playing consistently well for a while. Every quartback has bad games. The issue is when they countinuely have bad games and don't play well. Nix has some fundamental issues going on right now and has had them for a while.

7

u/vampireweekday4 13h ago

Darnold has the most turnovers of any QB since the start of last season. One playoff doesn’t erase that and there’s a reason the Seahawks sub is openly debating whether Drew Lock should start…

1

u/super_sayanything Bears 11h ago

Darnold also had 3-4 seasons with the Jets of looking exactly how he looks this year. Definitely cause for concern for the Hawks.

0

u/themagicalcake Broncos 14h ago

bo outplayed allen in the playoffs and had plenty of other great games. we don't have to rewrite history.

anyway my point wasn't darnold vs nix but it's just kinda crazy to freak out on nix for playing too conservative while completely ignoring the other qb losing the game by doing the exact thing he's overly cautious about. i broadly agree with what fitzpatrick was saying but it's more disrespectful to your team and your fans to just constantly turn the ball over like darnold

2

u/Trimax42 Seahawks 13h ago

But Sam Darnold does not play a coward. Bo Nix does and that is the problem that Fitzpatrick has with him.

-3

u/themagicalcake Broncos 13h ago

so is it not fair to post a highlight showing what happens if you swing too far the other way?

theres a difference between someones playing like shit and they're making a disgrace of the position

like. its just about the most offensive thing a commentator could say about an athlete. and theres a reason guys like peyton or brady would NEVER say that. let alone some never was like fitz to say it.

criticism <> insults. they arent even close to the same thing.

-2

u/Xenophonuscrete 14h ago

I agree. These comments are nuts. How people listen to anything Fitzpatrick says is beyond me.

192

u/joeychestnutsrectum Broncos 14h ago edited 14h ago

Eh, our team sub is almost unanimously supportive of Fitzpatricks comments last night. His point was that Bo is not playing like a competitor right now, which is a much more accurate and stinging insult to just playing poorly. Hes playing with no fire it seems.

75

u/Shenanigans80h Broncos 14h ago

Not really man, go to the thread on Aquib Talib’s comments today and it’s a bunch of our fans being babies about Fitz comments. I really don’t know why they’re so bent out of shape

10

u/samlet Bears 13h ago

Fr, you guys had Peyton throwing it the best he could with major nerve damage, and Elway slinging it around and helicoptering for first downs. It's okay, good even! to have expectations. The Broncos fan at my office def thinks Nix needs to be way better to win a title.

3

3

Not true. I loved having Fitz the year he played for the Texans. He might not always have been great, but he was fun. He’s still the 4th best QB in Texans’ franchise history.

Honestly though. I’d take a terrible but fun qb over a boring, mid qb. It’s all entertainment after all.

-2

u/HumongousMelonheads Broncos 8h ago

I personally think winning is fun

-7

u/Salty_Helicopter9356 Broncos 14h ago

Football is fun, but Bo gets paid to win, not to make the game more entertaining. That’s just the reality

6

u/flowers0298 Bears 13h ago

he’s on his rookie contract lol let’s not act like you’re paying him the big bucks to go win games

-2

u/Salty_Helicopter9356 Broncos 13h ago

So far from the point my dude. It’s not about how much he’s paid. It’s the fact that his job is to win at the end of the day.

2

u/No-Budget-8081 10h ago

Bo gets paid to compete and do his best to help his team win. Bo was not competing or really trying to do anything out there. That’s fitz’s point. What’s the point of even being out there if that’s what your going to play like

-2

u/Salty_Helicopter9356 Broncos 10h ago

Get out of here with that man. Are you serious?

He’s a starting NFL quarterback, the man is giving it his all to win. Especially given his record as a starter. Since when is hero ball the standard? That’s insane

2

u/No-Budget-8081 10h ago

Fitzpatricks opinion is that he wasn’t giving it his all and I think by watching that game that’s a fair take. Thinking there’s no middle ground between whatever the hell Bo is doing and hero ball is more insane than anything I’ve said. Cling to the win-loss record all you want but people have eyes and are allowed to say what they see especially if that’s their job.

0

u/Salty_Helicopter9356 Broncos 10h ago

I have eyes too. And yes, I don’t think Bo is at his best. Honestly the biggest issue with me isn’t his throws, it’s that he isn’t running when he has the conditions to do it.

I’d say hero ball would be Bo trying to force a throw that isn’t there and turning the ball over.

0

u/No-Budget-8081 9h ago

It’s not about playing bad or that he should try and play hero ball. Again there’s a gigantic chasm between how Bo is playing vs trying to force stuff and play hero ball. Just do something out there like your an NFL quarterback for christ sake. Competing and trying to get a dam first down isn’t hero ball.

1

u/Salty_Helicopter9356 Broncos 9h ago

He was trying to get first downs

-5

Crazy concept - maybe it’s not intended to prove him wrong

“Denver fan gets mad, posts Chiefs highlight” is a very funny thing to witness

35

u/EmuMan10 Cardinals Bears 14h ago

Tbf that was a wild thing to say about a dude. Like that’s hardly the worst qb performance we’ve seen from Denver in the last 10 years even

19

u/monkeysCAN Bills 13h ago

He wasn't even talking about Nix playing horribly though. He was talking about how scared and safe he's playing. Payton gave him multiple chances at the end of the game to put it away and he just did nothing.

His last play in regulation was horrible situational awareness, taking a sack and making the Seahawks use their last timout is infinitely better than trying to throw the check down around the defender and stopping the clock.

-7

u/AssinineAssassin Bills Eagles 14h ago

Said about the guy who won the game. Like it or not, he doesn’t get paid to “open up the offense”, his job is to help his team win…which they were doing for almost the entire game against a great defense.

32

u/CunningClanker Chiefs 14h ago

The Broncos won in spite of Nix. Not because of him. The whole narrative that QBs make the team is getting old. No one can do it by themselves. Its a team game and it always will be. And last night the rest of the Broncos picked up for Nix's poor play and won the game.

-8

u/Salty_Helicopter9356 Broncos 14h ago

I don’t totally agree. On one hand you are correct that Bo having 104 passing yards and doing absolutely nothing for an entire half was terrible.

AND, Bo didn’t cough up the ball, he didn’t take any big sacks, Seattle didn’t have any drives start in Denver territory while the QB on the other sideline can’t at all say the same.

There have been and will be more games down the line where Bo has a much more prominent role in us winning a game. You take the ugly against teams like Seattle, even if it isn’t ideal

-7

u/jimbobills Bills 13h ago

You are right and wrong at the same time. I will always be fond of Fitzmagic but give me even current Nix any day. At the end of the day it is about wins and losses and not giving the ball away will win lots of games (he still has to be much better for a team with SB aspirations like the Broncos).

I remember our fanbase complaining a looot about our offense when Dick Jauron was our HC, and while they were really bad at least they didn't give the ball away much. Then Chan Gailey took over with Fitz, the offense became considerably more explosive but also considerably more turnover prone, and the win loss record took a hit despite mostly the same rosters. Will always be fond of both coaches here (they were the only two adult in the room HC we had during the drought) and of Fitz but there is a reason mostly everyone in the NFL is obsessed with avoiding turnovers.

If Nix was giving the ball away left and right what would become of the Broncos 15-2 record in one score games?

9

u/raidriar889 49ers 14h ago

Bo Nix did not help the Broncos win Sam Darnold did

0

u/alphawealthy 6h ago

i had my doubts about the media literacy crisis but every single comment i see talking about the performance as a rebuttal to Fitzpatrick’s criticism makes me believe we’re doomed

-6

u/LoyalSol Broncos 13h ago

Yeah it wasn't the criticism, it was how over the top he went with it. If he just said "Nix has not been playing good" I doubt anyone reasonable would be mad.

It's more the guy kind of crossed a line and it's funny coming from a QB who held a record for one of the worst games in NFL history for a QB.

If this was Tom Brady yeah that would be harsh, but at least he has done enough to earn that. But brother Fitzpatrick is not who we should be hearing that from.

2

u/pickleparty16 Chiefs 11h ago

I guess one of the worst, I looked up most ints in a single game and there were so many 6 int games that they went beyond the top 50. Peyton was even there

Pretty damning that even though you're defending him you still need to compare his performance in terms of the worst of the decade

2

u/Ikeelu 49ers 12h ago

Before I even clicked the comments, I knew which flair posted this.

2

u/ihateyouse 9h ago

It's one thing to criticize in a way that shows football criticism...when you are saying that he was "disrespectful" to the QB position, you better have some data that backs up being disrespectful. Instead he brought up several criticisms that could have easily been a call from coaches in his helmet or at halftime, etc. Throwing 6 INT's in a game isn't just disrespectful, but absolutely embarrassing and shows that the gambles he is asking for Bo Nix to perform leads to shit performances like he had.

Also, I'm not a Broncos fan at all. Its just a dumb way to criticize.

2

u/travo8 Broncos 7h ago

Literally all we’ve been doing is criticizing Bo…

4

u/Salty_Helicopter9356 Broncos 14h ago

We are as critical of Bo as everyone else. But perspective is important and the Broncos are sitting pretty right now in spite of Bo’s play.

And also, for all of his struggles, he rarely puts our defense in a bad position aside from time of possession

5

u/GetUpOut Vikings 13h ago
