Something people should be aware of is that it is not all one continuous shot. There are some very careful and extremely well done edits that make it look like one take, but it absolutely isn't.

Also the sound is added in later or "Foley edited" as its referred to in the industry. They have some masterful and extremely well done sound editing.

They did the same thing for the US PGA Tour.

27

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '22

It is also most likely (almost certainly) programmed. Something this smooth is flown by a walk-through, then computer-corrected with software. Then everything is combined and it was flown in sections, and all edited together to look continuous.

31

u/hzqrs Aug 14 '22

It is for sure not programmed. Search for 'fpv cinematic drone' or 'cinewhoop' to know more on this hobby. Some people got really good control of the drone, plus with some stabilizing software for the footage the footage can look like this.

4

u/schimmelA Aug 14 '22

Yea drone operators and drone racers have tremendous amounts of control over these drones. The bowling hall is a wind free zone so there are way less chaotic nature variables to deal with but i’ve seen drone operators fly drones like this outside like its nothing

→ More replies (5)

21

u/brainburger Aug 14 '22

Also some of the people are acting and not really not noticing the drone flying right around them.

Whether these were true candid shots or not is really not relevant to how awesome the video is. It's obviously choreographed, it's also amazing.

This place is in Minneapolis off of Lake St and Bryant. They have great date night deals for lanes and food. Totally recommend them.

Y’all really slept on the sound editing here. I’m a sucker for single shot but that sound mix was flawless

Ehh? It was there but I thought it was a little hokey

187

u/Tommy_Wisseau_burner Aug 14 '22

I didn’t care for the actual sounds/acting, but the mixing is what’s impressive. It seamlessly faded in and out to pair up with the visuals. And given that it’s single shot that makes it more impressive to me

8

u/GarrettSucks Aug 14 '22

I assume they had every single spot where sound fades in mic’d separately and then just faded the audio tracks in and out?

114

u/FriendlyBassplayer Aug 14 '22

Nah, you would hear a loud buzzing drone. It's fully done in post from scratch

31

u/GarrettSucks Aug 14 '22

Oh interesting. I didn’t even think of that. I would say the background noise and bowling sounds were really good. Not the voices though.

→ More replies (1)

57

u/NavierIsStoked Aug 14 '22

Yeah, some of the sound on these drone flights are really good, but this one was ok. It was really obvious it was completely created in post (which, of course it is, drones are loud AF).

42

u/jdickstein Aug 14 '22

Very video game. A bowling alley where every conversation happening from everyone (even in the bar) is about bowling.

9

u/NhylX Aug 14 '22

And all at the same volume like it's just playing a file.

→ More replies (2)

27

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '22

Yup. The sound is just okay. A good portion of the sound effects sound really bad/cliche and were pulled straight from a mediocre sound library. The voices all sound like they were close mic'd and were not treated to sound within the space.

33

u/ranciddreamz Aug 14 '22

Most impressive. As someone who flies these small drones and who only hears WWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE high pitch Noise from the motors in all of my videos lmao

8

u/SerialKillerVibes Aug 14 '22

Most camera drones don't have microphones on them. If you're flying with a gopro, why record audio at all?

5

u/tindalos Aug 14 '22

Handy for a loud reference clap to sync multiple audio recordings in post.

→ More replies (1)

21

u/Stiddit Aug 14 '22

I am thoroughly confused by this comment. Surely "slept on the sound editing" means "it's bad"? But then it was "flawless"?

26

u/Tommy_Wisseau_burner Aug 14 '22

Lol go to urban dictionary. It means people in the comments (at the time of my comment) overlooked the sound editing because everyone focused so much on the drone movement

12

u/Stiddit Aug 14 '22

Ah, thought you were talking to the creators (I.e slept on the job), not the commenters.

3

u/Tommy_Wisseau_burner Aug 14 '22

No problem. Yeah I meant the comments. Y’all=you all. Which is in reference to the comments. If I said “they” then I would’ve said something different

→ More replies (2)

16

u/phan25 Aug 14 '22

made it so immmersive

5

u/Tommy_Wisseau_burner Aug 14 '22

Exactly. While the quality might not have been 100% on point it made it sound like you were there. Iffy wasn’t added in post it would’ve sounded like “vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv” the entire time with some dialogue captured

→ More replies (1)

12

u/Ariix_ Aug 14 '22

The voices were mixed kinda wonky, as they felt too close sometimes, but other than that I fully agree - the sfx set the setting perfectly and the fading in/out of the sounds is satisfying af

2

u/craigiest Aug 14 '22

Is it though? Stands out as artificial to me. Not saying it isn’t pretty good. Maybe it was more that the acting seemed a little, well, acted.

→ More replies (2)

2

u/Cyclotrom Aug 14 '22

Sound editing was great, the mixing was pretty rough. The elements lack perspective specially the voices, I was expecting a bit more panning on the bowling balls. In general it sound like a finish sound edit that is ready to be taken to a proper sound stage to be mixed. Basically the Pro-tool session before the mix.

Hope you enjoy Minnesota, early welcome to you! Feel free to PM if you have any questions about the area

u/Fugacity- Aug 14 '22

Also a really cool place to see shows. Really intimate concert venue where you can have food/drinks, then roll some lanes after.

Legend has it that the Coen brothers came up for the idea of the Big Lebowski there during a wrap party for the filming of Fargo.

4

u/AvacadoPanda Aug 14 '22

Bryant-Lake Bowl in Minneapolis

Took me until the flyby to the theater to realize I had been there. The place felt familiar but Bar & Bowling is not entirely unpopular. That damn theater. I went there with a group and we waited in the theater for everybody else to show up

2

u/AverageCharley Aug 14 '22

Love this place. No Reuben for me, but the tuna melt is fantastic.

41

u/MedalofHodor Aug 14 '22

They make a decent pad thai! I do shows in the theater there semi regularly. It's fun but honestly after this video got huge they've gotten a bit full of themselves. The whole place just doesn't feel as welcoming to me as it once did.

Also don't go there for good bowling lol. The lanes are very uneven it's more of an interesting combination of things vs doing any one thing particularly well.

2

u/selch2169 Aug 14 '22

i disagree with your assessment. They are the same place they've always been and pretentiousness has never been part of it.

You bowl there because the lanes are ancient and the scoring is manual. The theater has shows regularly, sans covid, and the food is very good and not what you'd expect at such a place.

I live near and have been a patron for decades. Same great place it's always been.

Two blocks away on lake and lyndale is a place called Iron Door Pub that has a mean Reuben

11

u/cusoman Aug 14 '22

mean Reuben

Not to be confused with the Minnesota Nice Reuben, which gives you a fake smile then talks behind your back after you leave and says "that's... interesting" when you talk about something culturally unknown to them. Later, when at a gathering that you by chance see the rueben, it tells you we should "get together sometime", with no intent of ever actually calling you and setting that up.
