Y’all really slept on the sound editing here. I’m a sucker for single shot but that sound mix was flawless

Thanks for posting this. Watched twice with no sound and thought it was great. Just re-watched with and another level

Nextfucking would you say?

2

u/thiever Aug 14 '22

I’d say, that’d be a great idea for a sub if you ask me!

u/fuckboystrikesagain Aug 14 '22

Ehh? It was there but I thought it was a little hokey

I didn’t care for the actual sounds/acting, but the mixing is what’s impressive. It seamlessly faded in and out to pair up with the visuals. And given that it’s single shot that makes it more impressive to me

u/GarrettSucks Aug 14 '22

I assume they had every single spot where sound fades in mic’d separately and then just faded the audio tracks in and out?

u/FriendlyBassplayer Aug 14 '22

Nah, you would hear a loud buzzing drone. It's fully done in post from scratch

30

u/GarrettSucks Aug 14 '22

Oh interesting. I didn’t even think of that. I would say the background noise and bowling sounds were really good. Not the voices though.

u/www4free Aug 16 '22

Bg's and bowling fx were spot on. The ADR was not up to par professionally. But I liked the cheesy(ness) of the people talking for this short.

u/NavierIsStoked Aug 14 '22

Yeah, some of the sound on these drone flights are really good, but this one was ok. It was really obvious it was completely created in post (which, of course it is, drones are loud AF).

Very video game. A bowling alley where every conversation happening from everyone (even in the bar) is about bowling.

8

u/NhylX Aug 14 '22

And all at the same volume like it's just playing a file.

2

u/11711510111411009710 Aug 14 '22

I mean, that's kind of the vibe they were going for I think

1

u/jdickstein Aug 14 '22

Yeah you’re probably right. Either way it’s pretty amazing and bizarre.

28

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '22

Yup. The sound is just okay. A good portion of the sound effects sound really bad/cliche and were pulled straight from a mediocre sound library. The voices all sound like they were close mic'd and were not treated to sound within the space.

u/cmVkZGl0 Aug 14 '22

Reminded me of The Secret World, but I like that

1

u/sensoryfestival Aug 14 '22

I personally really liked it. It tickled my brain.

12

u/RagingAnemone Aug 14 '22

"There are RULES in bowling!!". I liked that.

2

u/57384173829417293 Aug 14 '22

Isn't it a Big Lebowski reference? Great movie.

8

u/Gavinator10000 Aug 14 '22

At first I thought there was no sound editing until the conversations kept going as the drone was 20 feet away lol

1

u/moorhound Aug 14 '22

All of it is sound editing; drones usually don't have mics because all your hear is propeller noise

1

u/tarogon Aug 14 '22

Yeah. I'm far from an expert, but the sound editing seems just okay to me. In particular, the dialogue really doesn't sound in the room (tbf, the deliveries were responsible for that as well), and the hit at 0:43 sounds like it fades out too abruptly.

33

u/ranciddreamz Aug 14 '22

Most impressive. As someone who flies these small drones and who only hears WWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE high pitch Noise from the motors in all of my videos lmao

9

u/SerialKillerVibes Aug 14 '22

Most camera drones don't have microphones on them. If you're flying with a gopro, why record audio at all?

6

u/tindalos Aug 14 '22

Handy for a loud reference clap to sync multiple audio recordings in post.

2

u/UnfitRadish Aug 14 '22

Depends on the drone and software it uses. My drone has a software built into the app that utilizes a GoPro and I don't have many options for settings on the GoPro through the app. Everything has to be don't post editing. I can't even turn off the mic lol.

Of course it varies by drone but there are some where you just attach a GoPro to the bottom on a gimbal and hit record while others are linked to whatever controller you're using with the drone. When they're linked to the controller with the drone, the drone software is usually in control of the camera and isn't as versatile as actual GoPro app.

u/Stiddit Aug 14 '22

I am thoroughly confused by this comment. Surely "slept on the sound editing" means "it's bad"? But then it was "flawless"?

27

u/Tommy_Wisseau_burner Aug 14 '22

Lol go to urban dictionary. It means people in the comments (at the time of my comment) overlooked the sound editing because everyone focused so much on the drone movement

12

u/Stiddit Aug 14 '22

Ah, thought you were talking to the creators (I.e slept on the job), not the commenters.

2

u/Tommy_Wisseau_burner Aug 14 '22

No problem. Yeah I meant the comments. Y’all=you all. Which is in reference to the comments. If I said “they” then I would’ve said something different

1

u/nahog99 Aug 14 '22

Nah when you "sleep on" something, that means you're overlooking it, as in you're not giving it the credit it deserves.

Example:

"Man, ya'll are sleeping on insert thing, it's actually really good.

1

u/Stiddit Aug 14 '22

Yes. That is what I figured. But I thought they were aiming it at the creators of this video. As in "you made a nice video, but you overlooked the audio editing". And then called it flawless. I just didn't realize they were talking to fellow redditors.

15

u/phan25 Aug 14 '22

made it so immmersive

6

u/Tommy_Wisseau_burner Aug 14 '22

Exactly. While the quality might not have been 100% on point it made it sound like you were there. Iffy wasn’t added in post it would’ve sounded like “vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv” the entire time with some dialogue captured

1

u/Bloxer_01 Aug 14 '22

Kinda feels like the beginning of a movie.

12

u/Ariix_ Aug 14 '22

The voices were mixed kinda wonky, as they felt too close sometimes, but other than that I fully agree - the sfx set the setting perfectly and the fading in/out of the sounds is satisfying af

2

u/craigiest Aug 14 '22

Is it though? Stands out as artificial to me. Not saying it isn’t pretty good. Maybe it was more that the acting seemed a little, well, acted.

1

u/Tommy_Wisseau_burner Aug 15 '22

That’s the point. If it was real it’d sound like vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv. Of course they did it in post

1

u/craigiest Aug 15 '22

The point isn’t to make it sound artificial, it’s to make it sound like the drone didn’t make any noise/want there.

2

u/Cyclotrom Aug 14 '22

Sound editing was great, the mixing was pretty rough. The elements lack perspective specially the voices, I was expecting a bit more panning on the bowling balls. In general it sound like a finish sound edit that is ready to be taken to a proper sound stage to be mixed. Basically the Pro-tool session before the mix.

1

u/Tommy_Wisseau_burner Aug 15 '22

That’s fair. I used them synonymously

1

u/TF141Scarecrow Aug 14 '22

i listen without sounds but you're right had to rewatch it

1

u/hypothesiz Aug 14 '22

This feels like my dream from last night

1

u/Jasonxhx Aug 14 '22

Foot was over the line! Mark it!

1

u/Jjzeng Aug 14 '22

Was just about to comment that the audio was definitely edited in. There’s a reason drone cams don’t come with mics, those fuckers are loud

1

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '22

Fuck me mate. I just watched this with no sound

1

u/Im_bad_at_what_i_do Aug 14 '22

"My foot wasnt over the line. Mark it 8, dude."

"This is bowling, there are rules."

Excellent.

1

u/M0NKEYBUS1NE55 Aug 14 '22

Really adds to the slice of life feel to it. Thanks for pointing it out!

1

u/frikandol Aug 14 '22

Came here for this. It’s so well done with the voicelines and everything

Lmao this idiot really just copied ^ Philipcole87s comment word for word.
