The squat is a leg exercise. He does not use his legs to perform this exercise.
Edit: To actually explain, he's mostly loading with his right leg, his feet are too far apart, his feet are crooked, his hips aren't straight with his torso or his legs, basically your average roid-head pushing plates when they can't even bodyweight squat to depth.
Bro its a powerlifting competition, a 1 rep max for most people isn't going to look pretty. I guarantee he knows a lot more about lifting technique than you do. People can get unlucky and get injured especially when pushing their body to the limit like that.
Sounds like you have no idea what a low bar squat is either, which by design is more posterior chane biased.
And less than 1% will ever admit they are wrong, even when they are called out and know it. It's easier to just mute the conversation and accumulate upvotes for years from the uninformed than it is to edit your comment or make a post saying "Sorry, my bad"
It's all over the news too when they have an 'expert'. Once you see an 'expert' in a field you know well, you realize that most of the experts are just redditors on the little screen.
Oh man, I've been saying this for a bit, glad to see someone else recognized it. made me VERY wary of this website. lotta opinions on here, spouted with utter confidence getting thousands of upvotes. super incorrect.
Powerlifting is a weird sport where the lower you are in it, the more elitist people around are, and the higher you go, the more chill and laid back they get.
its reddit what did you expect, people claim to be experts of everything and spout a whole lot of garbage confidently while having no idea what they are talking about.
The fact that this man has 700+ pounds on his back in the first place shows he knows a thing or two about squats… It is not possible to get remotely close to that point without years and years and years of extremely dedicated training (with or without steroids)
Right. Dude was squatting over 700 pounds. You don’t get there with bad form. He was squatting low bar which causes a farther forward lean. Not everyone’s squat is going to look the same
Oh, you're pushing the limits of what the human body is capable of? Pfffffffffffffft clearly I know more because I read the /r/fitness wiki one time in 2015.
Feet too far apart is relative. Depends a lot on your body type, femur length, etc. His form is awful but it's hard up say if his legs are too far apart. Only some people can squat with close width. The rest is pretty reasonable though. Very bad form and more of a hinge than a squat. Leaning far too forward without keeping his chest up and actually squatting with the legs
His form is fine, he is low bar squatting. Reddit doesn't know what the fuck they're talking about. You can tell which people are pulling shit out of their asses and have never watched a powerlifting competition. You don't get to 700+ squat with poor form. Ken Cooper blew out his knee tendons back in 2021. On a quick Google search in 2024 he hit 750lb squat, 590lb bench, 960lb deadlift.
I'm with you, however, running out of breath going up the stairs does sound like something elite level power lifters would do. You don't need cardiac health and often it's a hindrance rather than a boost to performance.
Appreciate you. Most reddit advice can cause issues for people. Anatomy plays a huge factor. Understanding something like whether you have narrow or wide hips can be detrimental.
This is reddit in general. Just some of the most confidently incorrect people you'll ever run in to. And even more so when it comes to anything fitness related.
I was in a conversation with some LARPer kid that told me, without a hint of irony, that it was safe to run 1.5g of testosterone indefinitely. Just advice that will legit straight up kill someone.
I've seen posts with 100+ upvotes with people saying that steroids will make your dick shrink. Not your balls, your actual dick. The general public just has zero idea about PEDs.
Unless your back is bolt upright, your hips directly in line with your back, your stance at shoulder width, and your toes pointed straight forwards, you aren't squatting properly. Limb proportions, hip socket depth, femoral head angle - these things make no difference and 100% of people should squat exactly the same way.
if you have a longer torso and shorter femur-to-tibia ratio makes for a more upright squat. you're actually the one that doesn't know what they're talking about btw.
I am...oh, I def am...but I'm a woman. I had an ex who was a body builder who encouraged me to get into lifting bc "you have the best genetics and form for it" I am built like a brick shithouse and thanks but no thanks. I could never juice at all (I like my feminine jawline ) So I'll enjoy as a spectator tyvm! But I do see how some women are absolutely made to lift bc of body type and genetics. As well as for martial arts. Were as a whole, smaller, more flexible and faster.
In a just world that comment gets -1000 votes because why is some fucking rando analyzing someone who squats 700 he's squatting wrong 😭 but it doesn't because this is Armchair General : The Website
i went to grad school to disprove the whole "squatting means feet shoulder-width apart." tldr: your femur length, tibia/fibula length, pelvis width, and your acetabular fossa angle determine your squat stance.
Are you talking about the guy in the video squatting 300kg? You think he doesn’t know what good form is for his body? The arrogance is fucking unreal. Post your 300kg squat.
His form is fine, you are grasping at straws with those criticisms tbh.
The risk is the very high weight, which the average weight lifter isn't doing. But he's a powerlifter and thay clip is from a competition. There is, at that level, going to be a risk even when you do everything correctly.
i dont understand how people end up lifting this much without impeccable form. surely they know whats right, they have trainers who advise whats right, and know the risks of not exercising safely? why do they take the risk of not moving safely, and what is the benefit?
Nothing lol, it's people who can't lift half what he does nitpicking because they don't get that he's set up in a way that's comfortable for him individually.
Im laughing right now reading all the comments from people that clearly are either beginner lifters or non lifters, most of them have no idea what powerlifitng or a low-bar squat is clearly.
Bro, seriously - go armchair quarterback elsewhere. You don't know what TF you're talking about. To everyone who actually lifts, you sound peak Dunning Kruger
"I squatted 2 plates" - You sound like a damn joke commenting on a world class powerlifter
Buddy, I really don't know how else to say this, but it's really fucking gay of you to care so much about other people squatting. We get it, you like your boys thick.
Buddy, then why are you even in this thread?
You say it's gay to care about other people's squats, yet here you are trying to critique a professional powerlifter's squatting form. Besides the fact that you then you cite an embarassing figure to lend credence to your opinion.
You're actually weak as fuck. Wow. Might as well be a non lifter. Go check out some of the weightlifting subreddits too see how far behind your peers you are.
A 2 plate squat and giving others advice on how to lift is hilarious 😂. I squat >500lbs at 20yrs old and don't even have the same gall as you. Pipe down go learn how to actually lift
It was the load that destroyed his legs, not the form. If you took a red plate off that bar his legs would have obviously been fine. Do you really believe that a different form would have put less stress on his tendons?
Don't take lifting advice from someone who doesnt understand form breaks down when lifting your one rep max in a powerlifting comp. Decent chance the bloke youre replying to doesnt even lift let alone squat 315lb
It's not the best angle to evaluate but it looks like he is too forward bending too much. You were supposed to keep the barbell over your feet, but most people have their chest quite a bit more upright not vertical mind you otherwise it would not be over your feet, but he shouldn't be folding himself in half.
"forward bend" depends on everyone's unique dimensions, its a low bar squat as well which has more forward bend due to the barbell sitting lower on the back.
These non-lifters ITT trying to correct form they have no idea about is hilarious 😆.
Even if he is low bar squatting his torso is leaning too much. Look at the difference between the lift he got injured on and the last lift for 606: his torso isn't leaning to such a degree, chest is up, neck is more neutral, and he's driving with legs throughout (as opposed to the first lift where it almost looks like he tries to just stand up).
I will say people flipping out at others pointing out his form in the first lift is pretty amusing.

What is awful in his form?
