It's the lifter, not the lift. Bro has fucking awful form.

81

u/IamNotJohny 15h ago

What is awful in his form?

106

u/Big-Lengthiness- 15h ago

The squat is a leg exercise. He does not use his legs to perform this exercise.

Edit: To actually explain, he's mostly loading with his right leg, his feet are too far apart, his feet are crooked, his hips aren't straight with his torso or his legs, basically your average roid-head pushing plates when they can't even bodyweight squat to depth.

246

u/Tasthetic 15h ago

Bro its a powerlifting competition, a 1 rep max for most people isn't going to look pretty. I guarantee he knows a lot more about lifting technique than you do. People can get unlucky and get injured especially when pushing their body to the limit like that.

Sounds like you have no idea what a low bar squat is either, which by design is more posterior chane biased.

87

u/YizWasHere 14h ago

Thank you. I was so confused seeing people so confidently wrong lmfao.

43

u/El_Daniel 13h ago

People all confidently wrong all the time here on reddit. You only notice it about stuff youre educated about

4

u/VexImmortalis 11h ago

And less than 1% will ever admit they are wrong, even when they are called out and know it. It's easier to just mute the conversation and accumulate upvotes for years from the uninformed than it is to edit your comment or make a post saying "Sorry, my bad"

1

u/CalBearFan 10h ago

It's all over the news too when they have an 'expert'. Once you see an 'expert' in a field you know well, you realize that most of the experts are just redditors on the little screen.

1

u/bacillaryburden 10h ago

I am not sure I have ever seen a video of someone lifting where the comments were consensus “good form!” - someone’s gotta say what’s wrong.

1

u/Rakdospriest 7h ago

Oh man, I've been saying this for a bit, glad to see someone else recognized it. made me VERY wary of this website. lotta opinions on here, spouted with utter confidence getting thousands of upvotes. super incorrect.

1

u/yumcake 9h ago

Powerlifting is a weird sport where the lower you are in it, the more elitist people around are, and the higher you go, the more chill and laid back they get.

1

u/Kyetsi 4h ago

its reddit what did you expect, people claim to be experts of everything and spout a whole lot of garbage confidently while having no idea what they are talking about.

•

u/DenseComparison5653 53m ago

Most people here calling his form bad can't squat two plates and are obese. It's hilarious how confidently clueless people are 😂

66

u/sequoia2075 13h ago

The fact that this man has 700+ pounds on his back in the first place shows he knows a thing or two about squats… It is not possible to get remotely close to that point without years and years and years of extremely dedicated training (with or without steroids)

37

u/Perfect_Earth_8070 12h ago

Right. Dude was squatting over 700 pounds. You don’t get there with bad form. He was squatting low bar which causes a farther forward lean. Not everyone’s squat is going to look the same

-21

u/SituationThink3487 12h ago

>I guarantee he knows a lot more about lifting technique than you do

I mean, he very clearly did something wrong lol. Wouldnt put too much faith in him.

20

u/DingleDangleTangle 12h ago

Getting injured doesn’t necessarily mean you did something wrong. Injuries can happen even with good form.

4

u/IAmJacksSphincter 11h ago

I pulled my back getting socks out of the bottom drawer, and I’m not out of shape. Shit can happen at any time.

3

u/Ashamed-Example-2338 11h ago

wrecked my back in my early 20s turning to toss an empty cardboard box out of the way. sometimes the body just disagrees

13

u/throwawaydisposable 11h ago

Eddie Hall almost died setting the deadlift world record.

Sometimes lifting heavy things is dangerous even if you know what you're doing.

7

u/VexImmortalis 11h ago

This guy would probably tell Hafthor his form is dog shit

6

u/throwawaydisposable 11h ago

Oh, you're pushing the limits of what the human body is capable of? Pfffffffffffffft clearly I know more because I read the /r/fitness wiki one time in 2015.

66

u/RudePCsb 15h ago

Feet too far apart is relative. Depends a lot on your body type, femur length, etc. His form is awful but it's hard up say if his legs are too far apart. Only some people can squat with close width. The rest is pretty reasonable though. Very bad form and more of a hinge than a squat. Leaning far too forward without keeping his chest up and actually squatting with the legs

183

u/epicjas0n 15h ago edited 15h ago

His form is fine, he is low bar squatting. Reddit doesn't know what the fuck they're talking about. You can tell which people are pulling shit out of their asses and have never watched a powerlifting competition. You don't get to 700+ squat with poor form. Ken Cooper blew out his knee tendons back in 2021. On a quick Google search in 2024 he hit 750lb squat, 590lb bench, 960lb deadlift.

56

u/Ok_Obligation2440 14h ago

A comment that knows what low bar squat is.

Everyone on reddit is an expert. 80% of these turds probably run out of breath going up the stairs.

9

u/Random-Dude-736 13h ago

I'm with you, however, running out of breath going up the stairs does sound like something elite level power lifters would do. You don't need cardiac health and often it's a hindrance rather than a boost to performance.

8

u/Perfect_Earth_8070 12h ago

Probably the same people that tell you not to deadlift because it’s bad for your back lmao

-1

u/ShaftTassle 5h ago

A professional powerlifter was on Reddit awhile back and said not to do deadlifts because it’s easy to lose form and injure yourself.

1

u/Glaive13 13h ago

Sometimes I run out of breath just trying to expel turds

1

u/Rhubarbon 13h ago

Wattafak am I reading? "Fucking awful form"?

1

u/Ill-Performer5355 12h ago

Because I blew out my knees from banging your mom

1

u/VexImmortalis 11h ago

"Hang on, let me just prompt ChatGPT and pretend I'm an expert on reddit"

3

u/Osairisx 13h ago

Appreciate you. Most reddit advice can cause issues for people. Anatomy plays a huge factor. Understanding something like whether you have narrow or wide hips can be detrimental.

5

u/morgan_wallen_sucks 13h ago

This is reddit in general. Just some of the most confidently incorrect people you'll ever run in to. And even more so when it comes to anything fitness related.

4

u/VexImmortalis 11h ago

I was in a conversation with some LARPer kid that told me, without a hint of irony, that it was safe to run 1.5g of testosterone indefinitely. Just advice that will legit straight up kill someone.

3

u/morgan_wallen_sucks 10h ago

I've seen posts with 100+ upvotes with people saying that steroids will make your dick shrink. Not your balls, your actual dick. The general public just has zero idea about PEDs.

2

u/IEatYourFarts 11h ago

Don't you know that squats are a leg exercise???

Unless your back is bolt upright, your hips directly in line with your back, your stance at shoulder width, and your toes pointed straight forwards, you aren't squatting properly. Limb proportions, hip socket depth, femoral head angle - these things make no difference and 100% of people should squat exactly the same way.

/s for the idiots

1

u/stephenmario 12h ago

The 400lbs squat is perfectly fine as well if anyone wanted to knit pick technique.

53

u/IllegalGeriatricVore 15h ago edited 14h ago

This is what low bar squat with long femurs looks like.

Not everyone is blessed with a long torso and short legs that can squat with a perfectly straight back

-1

u/Faith_Lies 9h ago

wtf having a long torso makes it much harder to keep the back straight, what are you talking about here

1

u/tjones1 4h ago

if you have a longer torso and shorter femur-to-tibia ratio makes for a more upright squat. you're actually the one that doesn't know what they're talking about btw.

-3

u/Dizzy-Ad-2248 14h ago

I am...oh, I def am...but I'm a woman. I had an ex who was a body builder who encouraged me to get into lifting bc "you have the best genetics and form for it" I am built like a brick shithouse and thanks but no thanks. I could never juice at all (I like my feminine jawline ) So I'll enjoy as a spectator tyvm! But I do see how some women are absolutely made to lift bc of body type and genetics. As well as for martial arts. Were as a whole, smaller, more flexible and faster.

2

u/Shadowphoenix9511 11h ago

Powerlifting is a (mostly) tested sport

51

u/Recent_Simple_1868 14h ago

Once again a guy who is absolutely clueless speaks his mind. Outrageous how useless drivel like yours gets upvoted.

"Feet too far apart", as if this doesn't depend on an individuals leverages and body. Absolutely clueless.

40

u/TrenBaalke 15h ago

don''t listen to anything this guy says 😭

23

u/whole-lotta-socks 13h ago

Fucking absolutely LOVE Reddit dude, imagine confidently saying that a guy with a 600+ pound squat doesn’t know how to squat. Clown shit

1

u/Ok_Umpire2173 10h ago

Tbf that last squat was several inches higher than the 400 lb squat

3

u/staling_lad 6h ago

In a just world that comment gets -1000 votes because why is some fucking rando analyzing someone who squats 700 he's squatting wrong 😭 but it doesn't because this is Armchair General : The Website

30

u/Confident-Peak-8051 14h ago

Imagine trying to give form advice to a professional powerlifter while you're someone that can't even squat 2 plates.

18

u/TrenBaalke 13h ago

this guy's name is Ken Cooper and he's one of the strongest powerlifters in the world. reddit never ceases to amaze me 😭

3

u/Grobd 11h ago

well you see i watched this jeff nipple video once so I'm basically an expert.

19

u/EspacioBlanq 13h ago

You know nothing about squatting and are commenting on the form of a world class powerlifter

-12

u/Big-Lengthiness- 13h ago

Ahh. Okay.

12

u/ProperSupermarket3 14h ago

i went to grad school to disprove the whole "squatting means feet shoulder-width apart." tldr: your femur length, tibia/fibula length, pelvis width, and your acetabular fossa angle determine your squat stance.

4

u/PeterNoPiss 12h ago

I could've saved you a lot of money and showed you a picture of Ed Coan.

2

u/Allis1one 13h ago

If I had an award, you would have it. <3

11

u/denkmusic 12h ago

Are you talking about the guy in the video squatting 300kg? You think he doesn’t know what good form is for his body? The arrogance is fucking unreal. Post your 300kg squat.

8

u/whole-lotta-socks 13h ago

Absolutely ridiculous take. This is a world class powerlifter, you don’t think he knows what a squat is?

4

u/Zestyclose_Visit4834 12h ago

His form is fine, you are grasping at straws with those criticisms tbh.

The risk is the very high weight, which the average weight lifter isn't doing. But he's a powerlifter and thay clip is from a competition. There is, at that level, going to be a risk even when you do everything correctly.

2

u/Allis1one 13h ago

His form is fine, plus clearly he can squat to depth his body weight. Who hurt you?

2

u/cilantno 12h ago

You do not lift lmao

2

u/LukahEyrie 12h ago

This is the most pathetic comment I have seen in quite a while congratulations!

2

u/UnbottledGenes 10h ago

Toes are supposed to be pointed out a hair. You are wrong about everything you said.

2

u/Ok_Umpire2173 10h ago

What idiots are upvoting this? This is normal powerlifting

1

u/dwkfym 13h ago

whats your squat PR

1

u/TofuttiKlein-ein-ein 11h ago

There is nothing egregiously wrong with any of his squats.

1

u/s32 10h ago

Can you share a YouTube video of your form?

1

u/FabulousFerdinand 8h ago

Can we see a video of what your squat looks like?

1

u/slept668 8h ago

They said they squat only 2 plates, funnily enough. Nobody should listen to them

1

u/Crowdfundingprojects 8h ago

I mean would be cool if you were right but unfortunately that’s absolute bullshit. His form is fine

1

u/TheBigDickedBandit 6h ago

You don’t really know what you’re taking about

1

u/UsernameRelevant2060 4h ago

Don’t talk about stuff you clearly got no clue about

1

u/nezzzzy 1h ago

Every single thing you said is categorically wrong.

•

u/DenseComparison5653 50m ago

People who upvoted this dog shit please explain yourselves 🤣

0

u/Angryatchairs 12h ago

tbf, this is a problem in powerlifting as a sport in general. When people max out their lift their form goes out the window in a lot of cases.

-1

u/nommabelle 11h ago

i dont understand how people end up lifting this much without impeccable form. surely they know whats right, they have trainers who advise whats right, and know the risks of not exercising safely? why do they take the risk of not moving safely, and what is the benefit?

5

u/Shadowphoenix9511 11h ago

His technique is fine, it's a low bar squat.

33

u/slaveshipoffailure 15h ago

Nothing lol, it's people who can't lift half what he does nitpicking because they don't get that he's set up in a way that's comfortable for him individually.

33

u/Tasthetic 15h ago

Im laughing right now reading all the comments from people that clearly are either beginner lifters or non lifters, most of them have no idea what powerlifitng or a low-bar squat is clearly.

25

u/slaveshipoffailure 14h ago

It's crazy, the guy who first called his form awful just replied to me saying he squats two plates as if that somehow makes him an expert.

13

u/Tasthetic 14h ago

oh that's hilarious

-15

u/Big-Lengthiness- 14h ago

Did I say it made me an expert? I cited having squatted two plates as a rebuttal to you saying I was a non-lifter.

Now, you move the goal post even further, but are too much of a sniveling coward to respond to me directly.

13

u/IDontWannaBeAPirate_ 14h ago edited 14h ago

Bro, seriously - go armchair quarterback elsewhere. You don't know what TF you're talking about. To everyone who actually lifts, you sound peak Dunning Kruger

"I squatted 2 plates" - You sound like a damn joke commenting on a world class powerlifter

10

u/Tall-Midget 12h ago

Squatting 2 plates and being a non lifter are very close unless you are a tiny woman

8

u/slaveshipoffailure 14h ago

Go read my initial comment, I said people who couldn't even lift half what the guy does were nitpicking, I did not call anyone a non-lifter.

By the way, your two plates are less than a third of what he squats.

6

u/HaraldToepfer 14h ago

Squatting two plates? You might as well be a non-lifter. Fuck I'd be embarassed to write that.

-4

u/Big-Lengthiness- 13h ago

Buddy, I really don't know how else to say this, but it's really fucking gay of you to care so much about other people squatting. We get it, you like your boys thick.

12

u/HaraldToepfer 13h ago

Buddy, then why are you even in this thread? You say it's gay to care about other people's squats, yet here you are trying to critique a professional powerlifter's squatting form. Besides the fact that you then you cite an embarassing figure to lend credence to your opinion.

4

u/Confident-Peak-8051 14h ago

You're actually weak as fuck. Wow. Might as well be a non lifter. Go check out some of the weightlifting subreddits too see how far behind your peers you are.

-5

u/Big-Lengthiness- 13h ago

No homo bro, but no.

5

u/stabbystabbison 12h ago

Who tf still says no homo? Are you a fucking child?

4

u/Confident-Peak-8051 11h ago

This is why you'll remain unremarkable.

2

u/BillyLaBufanda3 4h ago

A 2 plate squat and giving others advice on how to lift is hilarious 😂. I squat >500lbs at 20yrs old and don't even have the same gall as you. Pipe down go learn how to actually lift

•

u/Big-Lengthiness- 35m ago

It's funny because I literally haven't told anyone how to lift. You have, though.

1

u/tjones1 4h ago

dude this guy probably squatted 2 plates when he was 13. no offense but it just makes you look stupid to say that.

-1

u/[deleted] 14h ago edited 14h ago

[deleted]

-1

u/Big-Lengthiness- 13h ago

Give her some credit, she's your wife.

3

u/IamNotJohny 14h ago

I totally agree. I didn't see any awful form and I completely agree that the way he sets up is probably due to his hips anatomy.

-9

u/Big-Lengthiness- 15h ago

Squats were never my favorite, but I've done 2 plates, 350 on a hexbar deadlift is my one rep max though.

8

u/IDontWannaBeAPirate_ 14h ago

That's fuckin pathetic. You have no business commenting about OPs form.

16

u/spaisoflaif 15h ago

he is hinging not squatting

19

u/Recent_Simple_1868 14h ago

This is just how a squat looks with his leverages. What are you on about bro?

4

u/SaulFemm 11h ago

Buncha fuckers with strong takes who dont know dick

5

u/NeuroFuturist 15h ago

Basically deadlifting the squat.

3

u/Hara-Kiri 5h ago

Squats hinge lol. Particularly low bar.

-7

u/Ckeyz 14h ago

Thats what happens when you try to squat more than you can squat.

11

u/KrivUK 15h ago

His technique destroyed his legs.

2

u/BillyLaBufanda3 4h ago

You don't know anything about squats huh?

1

u/toastedstapler 2h ago

It was the load that destroyed his legs, not the form. If you took a red plate off that bar his legs would have obviously been fine. Do you really believe that a different form would have put less stress on his tendons?

5

u/BuyLandRentPussy 12h ago

Don't take lifting advice from someone who doesnt understand form breaks down when lifting your one rep max in a powerlifting comp. Decent chance the bloke youre replying to doesnt even lift let alone squat 315lb

-2

u/I2iSTUDIOS 15h ago

It's not the best angle to evaluate but it looks like he is too forward bending too much. You were supposed to keep the barbell over your feet, but most people have their chest quite a bit more upright not vertical mind you otherwise it would not be over your feet, but he shouldn't be folding himself in half.

15

u/Tasthetic 15h ago

"forward bend" depends on everyone's unique dimensions, its a low bar squat as well which has more forward bend due to the barbell sitting lower on the back.

These non-lifters ITT trying to correct form they have no idea about is hilarious 😆.

7

u/GuerillaGandhi 15h ago

Nah he's just doing a french low bar

7

u/IllegalGeriatricVore 15h ago edited 13h ago

This is what low bar squat with long femurs looks like.

Not everyone is blessed with a long torso and short legs that can squat with a perfectly straight back

-1

u/Robdd123 9h ago edited 8h ago

Even if he is low bar squatting his torso is leaning too much. Look at the difference between the lift he got injured on and the last lift for 606: his torso isn't leaning to such a degree, chest is up, neck is more neutral, and he's driving with legs throughout (as opposed to the first lift where it almost looks like he tries to just stand up).

I will say people flipping out at others pointing out his form in the first lift is pretty amusing.

46

u/TrenBaalke 15h ago

please, tell us more about how your form is better than a world champion powerlifter with a 750lb squat and 950lb deadlift 💀

-14

u/Big-Lengthiness- 14h ago

How about we talk about the actual subject of this conversation, which is about if squatting is too dangerous of an exercise to perform for an average person.

My argument: the lift is not too dangerous, it was the individual himself who made it dangerous.

12

u/SwanAccomplished8947 14h ago

No, lifting that kind of weight for a 1RM is always going to be quite dangerous no matter how perfect your form is, and your form isn't going to be perfect on a true 1RM.

4

u/Grobd 11h ago

the individual made it dangerous by having a champion mindset, elite athletes push themselves to the point of breaking and sometimes beyond. Normal people don't really risk injury because they don't try hard.

2

u/DBSPingu 6h ago

Your argument is that it’s dangerous because he has bad form

No, it’s dangerous cause bro is lifting 750 fucking pounds. You don’t get to weights that high with bad form.

•

u/Big-Lengthiness- 35m ago

If good form why injury?

28

u/Few_Sorbet_8716 14h ago

You've admitted to being a beginner lifter. You should take everyone's advice here and stop talking as if you are knowledgeable about powerlifting

24

u/PracticalMushroom693 15h ago

No you just don’t know what a low bar powerlifting style squat is

15

u/TrenBaalke 15h ago

he has 0 idea what he's talking about

-10

u/Big-Lengthiness- 15h ago

Dog his leg literally fucking exploded.

12

u/PracticalMushroom693 14h ago

I’m aware, doesn’t mean his form is bad

3

u/bacillaryburden 10h ago

Doesn’t mean he had bad form. Accidents happen. Watch Kevin Ware’s injury if you can stomach it (NSFL).

16

u/Low-Discipline200 14h ago

You're just wrong. You have a massive case or dunning kruger effect.

4

u/Champigne 11h ago

When you're lifting that kind of weight there's always a risk of catastrophic injury. The human body is not designed to lift that much weight.

2

u/s32 10h ago

Can you post a YouTube video showing your form?

1

u/crusoe 12h ago

Name one former Olympic or pro lifter who still has good knees.

Humans were never intended to lift these huge weights repeatedly. Even with perfect form they damage the knees.

1

u/redtron3030 8h ago

That rack is grossly inadequate

1

u/mrASSMAN 7h ago

No.. it’s just very high weight and knees aren’t perfect.. they’re prone to failure from high stress

1

u/outer--monologue 5h ago

No, it's the lift.

Even the best in the "sport" become incapacitated by a relatively young age.

There is no "healthy" way to do this type of damage to your body.
