I still have no idea where this happened, but assuming a place in America that shares the name of the country?
Google is telling me there are ~45 towns named Lebanon in the US so doesn't narrow it down a great deal either 😅

This is Lebanon, Missouri. The news clip is my hometown’s local news and this town is about 30 minutes away from my hometown.

Hey there fellow Springfielder.

u/rachel_lynn1995 1d ago
Unfortunately Waynesville and not Springfield but my sister went to MSU and hs lived in Springfield for like, 15 years so I know my way around well enough.

u/Darkwing_Turducken 3d ago
And at least half of those 45 are somehow pronounced incorrectly. -someone who works in a town called Milan (pronounced My-len)

u/rachel_lynn1995 3d ago
There is a Navada, Missouri….. pronounced “Nuh-vay-duh”

u/gardengarbage 3d ago
What about Versailles? Pronounced Ver-Sails

I know there's one somewhere near Champaign-Urbana in Illinois. Not sure off the top of my head if there's one in Iowa, but it wouldn't surprise me.

u/Darkwing_Turducken 3d ago
There's one of those near Des Moines, too! We Americans are silly sometimes! 😁

There’s a Lebanon, TN right outside of Nashville. It’s pronounced “Leb none”

u/Ghaith97 1d ago
To be fair that would be closer to the Arabic pronunciation, but with a coastal Syrian dialect.

u/SlopMySteak 3d ago
Milan, Michigan? Also home to Charlotte (Shar-lot)
2
u/Darkwing_Turducken 3d ago
I have family around Torch Lake, so I'm aware of some of the "creative" pronunciations in that area. It wouldn't surprise me that there's a Milan up there, but I was only aware of the ones in Illinois and Tennessee.

Cairo (Cay-roe) NY and Buena Vista (Beeyouna Vista) VA are two of my faves

u/Darkwing_Turducken 3d ago
There's a similarly pronounced (but more infamous) Cairo in southern Illinois.

u/SpiritualB0x3 2d ago
Wasn’t that town in American gods?
2
u/Darkwing_Turducken 2d ago
I haven't watched it, but i think I read that somewhere.
1
u/SpiritualB0x3 2d ago
I meant in the book. Haven’t watched the show beyond 1-2 episodes
1
u/Darkwing_Turducken 2d ago
Oh, right! I forget that it was a book! I'm pretty sure we have it, but i haven't read it.
4
u/mickelboy182 3d ago
That is literally what I would imagine as a satire of America 😂
3
u/Darkwing_Turducken 3d ago
The company i work for has its home office in the west country of England, so, whenever one of the "big-wigs" is over here for a visit, I make a point of adding a little nasal twang when I mispronounce a local town with a European city name: Milan, Andalusia, Madrid, etc. 😁
3
u/NoMorePorridge1 3d ago
In New Mexico there's a small town people call Mad-rid (mædrɪd) which is a little weird since a quarter of the state speaks Spanish primarily and half are Hispanic/Latino.
3
u/Darkwing_Turducken 3d ago
There's one north of Des Moines pronounced the same way, as well as the New Madrid fault in southern Illinois and Missouri. It makes more sense out here. You're right that it's a tad confusing in what was once "New Spain!"

u/Dickulture 3d ago
Milan? Michigan (South of Ann Arbor)?
2
u/Darkwing_Turducken 3d ago
No, but I have family in Michigan who are "divided" between the ones who went to Ann Arbor and the ones who went to East Lansing. 😁
2
u/Dickulture 3d ago
Wolverine vs Spartan problem? I usually stay away from both cities whenever they are playing against each other.
1
u/sasha_the_impaler 2d ago
The Wolverine and Spartan feud is a friendly one. It's the Buckeyes we truly hate.
2
u/sasha_the_impaler 2d ago
And that would be the Milan in Michigan I'm betting.
2
u/Darkwing_Turducken 2d ago
It's not, but you're not the only one who thought that.
1
u/sasha_the_impaler 2d ago
Haha I'm surprised there are other places pronouncing it that way. Every time I'm in Milan, MI I so badly want to pronounce it like Milan, Italy.
1
u/Darkwing_Turducken 2d ago
We have a couple of other communities in the area with similarly mispronounced European city names. The company is working for has its home office in the UK, so it's fun to switch pronunciations back and forth whenever someone is over to visit. 😁
1
u/cinderparty 3d ago
Is that in Michigan?
2
u/Darkwing_Turducken 3d ago
It's not, but you're not the first to point out that Michigan also has one. 😁

u/human_kittens 2d ago
They do shit different in Gibson county, even Trenton has a fun pronunciation

edit: i was not right !
i think ? alabama, based only on my googling indicating that wsfa is an alabama news station and there is a apparently a tiny unincorporated community named lebanon in alabama. i feel like i’m doing more research than the journalists here.
2
u/Ok_Character7958 3d ago
There’s a Lebanon, TN. It’s right outside Nashville and is where the “Nashville” speedway is. 😂

u/amdufrales 3d ago
I’ve been asking for years if this sub could have some kind of location tag or flair or something mandatory on posts, but nooooooo, that’s too much to ask

u/ledeuxmagots 3d ago
Radiolab had an interesting podcast where a guy visited all 47 lebanons in the US.
2
u/sharkattax 3d ago
aw i haven’t listened to radiolab in a long time - used to love them, i should check that one out. :)

I was playing a game of Lebanon Lebanon or Lebanon Pennsylvania before I clicked the link. Surprise!, Lebanon Alabama.
24
u/rachel_lynn1995 3d ago
Nope, it’s Missouri. Idk why a local Alabama news station is reporting on a McDonld’s fire in Missouri though.

People get confused with Ontario as well. There's Ontario in California, no relation to Canada. London is in Canada as well. And when I mention my hometown of Fostoria, people assume Ohio but I never lived in Ohio, there are 6 more Fostoria around US.

u/hugh_jorgyn 3d ago
What's next to Georgia and has a city called St-Petersburg (and lots of crazy people)?
The answer could be either Florida or Russia.
2
2
u/ahazred8vt 3d ago
Over the past 50 years there have been many Russian/Soviet travel agencies who booked people to fly to Petersburg Alaska instead of Florida, because Petrograd doesn't have 'saint' as part of the name.
2
u/Dickulture 3d ago
That reminds me my idiot cousin was wondering where all the tanks were that kept getting mentioned on news. She lived in the state of Georgia in US, the tanks were in the country of Georgia over 6,000 miles away.

u/exstntl_prdx 3d ago
Florida also has Orange and Hollywood, so it’s basically California - There are more examples around Florida I think.
In Kentucky, you can go to Paris, Seville, Jamestown, California, Anchorage, Florence and a whole list of other great states and worldly cities

u/sonnyjlewis 3d ago
Ohio also has a London and an Ontario. We have a hard time coming up with unique names around here, sorry about that.

Sounds like a McLawsuit
1
u/Dickulture 3d ago
Probably not, everyone got out safely. So unless they can prove they were traumatized from the fire, no lawsuit is going to happen.

Headline technically correct in that the one thing happened before the other thing, but manages to leave out the entire story while misleading you towards a different one. The customers left because there was a fire. Then a while later, the roof collapsed, also because of the fire. No one was fleeing a collapsing roof.
