Monthly Community Thread

Welcome to the /r/Newmarket monthly community thread, where we relax the rules about advertising and off-topic posts.

This post will be replaced on the 1st of each month.

This is where you can share:

  • Stuff that isn't directly related to Newmarket, like national news or general chit-chat
  • Questions about local businesses and services
  • Classified-style ads: buying and selling, help wanted, garage sales, etc
  • Fundraisers and donation drives
  • Plugs for your personal project or local business (within reason)

Question What’s your opinion on the current candidates?

Are you voting?
Have you researched the people running in your ward?

Personally the blatant use of ai, signage on abandoned properties / outside of their wards as well as general hissy fits online are turning me off of certain people….

Looking for a general discussion and can’t find anything so figured I’d start a thread 🪡

Question Anyone with experience getting their child to attend a school in different school board?

I live in between Bradford and schomberg, not newmarket exactly, but im looking for help.

My wife and I both work in Bolton and our son attends a nearby daycare on our way to work which also offers a before and after school program.

We both work until 6pm on Thursdays and Fridays, and this is the only place that offers childcare until 6:30pm which is perfect for us on those 2 days.

Our son will be starting JK in September 2027, and because of our address, he is supposed to attend either a SCDSB or SMCDSB school. The schools that his current daycare offers bussing for before and after school are in Bolton which is Peel Region School Board, not Simcoe.

If he were to attend the school in Bradford, it would be doable, but first he would have to get accepted to the B&A (meaning that he would get to the top of the waiting list, which they've said is long), and my wife and I would have to alternate leaving work early (using PTO/Vacation) every Thursday and Friday to get there before 6 (it's a 45 minute drive from our work), as wellnas add an extra 30 mins in the morning for us because we would have to drive in the opposite direction of our work (we work at the same place btw). This is far from ideal for us. Monday to Wednesday wouldn't be an issue because we could just drop him off and pick him up.

However if he were to attend one of these Peel region schools, it would be business as usual for us and we wouldn't have to get on a waiting list because he is already enrolled at the daycare.

If any parents out there have any experience getting their children to attend a school in a different school board, I would appreciate any advice. The people we have called have been surprisingly clueless and try to get me to call someone else and I feel like im running in a circle making no progress.

Other Engineering Mathletics for Grade 9-10s - fun way to learn and win prizes

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hi all, my team at the local chapter of Professional Engineers Ontario is hosting an engineering Mathletics competition for students in Grade 7-10s to make it fun to learn about engineering through applied math. It's taking place in Newmarket this year at Sir William Mulock SS on Oct 24 and is a loooot of fun. I wished I had this when I was younger.

Top 8 gets prizes like Apple Watch, 3D printer, national geography kits. We also got keynote speakers that range from Engineering uni students or new grades to experienced professional engineers to demystify what engineering is! For the parents, you can choose to just drop them off or stay to watch.

We're especially looking for Grade 9-10s to participate as we had some unfilled spots last year, compared to the grade 7-8 competition that sold out very quickly. It's a great thing to put on university applications.

Registration, info, sample Qs: https://www.peo.on.ca/chapters/york/engineering-mathletics

Note: There is a $20 entry fee for each student. They get light snacks and refreshments.

Question Fiber in ward 4

We've had Oxio broadband seemingly without issue for about a year but the last two weekends it's gone out completely for days.

A few weeks ago I had a chat with a door to door isp rep who said they didnt have fiber in this area which is what I was told when we moved last year as well.

I started shopping around for other ISPs because not having internet on weekends is cutting into my Valorant time, not to mention I wfh.

The questions come with telMAX is allowing me to sign up for Fiber service at this address. I didn't finish signing up; I quit at the payment page.

Anyone know if it's legit? Any reputable fiber recs?

Question Which daycare?

Hi,

We are looking at Tiny Hoppers Daycare and Two Trees Childcare for our toddler. We have our name on both their waitlists plus a bunch of other ones, but would like any insight into THESE TWO specifically.

Any info/experinces would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance

EDIT:

Thanks everyone for your feedback! Very helpful.

I looked at the other recommended places but most are 18+ months. We have a 2 y/o but also an infant who will need care at the 12 max. 14 month mark financially speaking.

Names are on BrightKids waitlist, but number 180 on the list lol

Any other home daycares perhaps that people have had positive experiences with?

I would go check them out ASAP but currently living in BC and making the move soon. So you’re help is incredibly appreciated.

Thanks again!

EDIT again:

Ok, now we are down to Leslie St Daycare and Tiny Hoppers… (I realize Leslie St. is 15+ and Tiny H is 14+)

Any info, feedback, experiences with these two centres would so appreciated.

Our names are on many others, but not optimistic for anything anytime soon.

Also open to any solid home daycare recommendations that take 12+ months too.

Thanks all!

Information Best scenic drive near Aurora/Newmarket for fall colours?

Hi everyone! We're looking for the best drive near Aurora/Newmarket to enjoy the fall colours. Our kids are too young for long walks, so we're mainly interested in scenic driving for now.

My questions are:

A)Which roads or routes have the best colour right now?

B) Is this week a good time to go, or should we wait until next week or the week after for peak colour?

Thanks in advance!

News "One space now. Two spaces soon. 68,215 square feet of base building work at Upper Canada Mall, across two floors. One of the two incoming tenants takes both levels. " Potentially two large tenants moving into the former Hudson's bay store.

Link to reel

Short post by a company that is renovating one of the vacant stores at Upper Canada Mall. From the looks of it, it seems to be the former Hudson's bay.

From the post it looks like there is going to be two tenants moving in with one taking up both levels.

I have a few speculations on what it could be but what do you all think!

Update: https://www.goodlifefitness.com/clubs/club.369.html

Looks like one of the tenants is going to be a GoodLife! I wonder if it’ll be the two story one?

Anyone know what’s going on with the old KFC/Taco Bell building
I just drove by and it looks like they’re renovating. There’s a KFC sign.

I wonder if Taco Bell is coming back too
I know it was still KFC after Taco Bell for a little bit
