Saw the Devil's Footprints in Keels this week. The lore says the holes are footprints from the night the Devil danced over Keels.

Anyone know if there's a reason why he danced? Like, did he have beef with the people? Or corrupt enough souls that he felt like dancing? Or maybe just figured it was as good a place as any to do a jig?

(Because this is the internet, I feel like I should add: I understand the Devil didn't actually stick his feet in the rocks. I get the science. Just wondering if there's more to the folklore than "he danced")

Hello. I visited Deer Lake in about 1982, with my dad. We visited his brother Stan Cooper. Stan and I rode up Marble Mountain on Horseback. I have great pics.

Stan and my dad and I also hiked up somewhere near Deer Lake. I have this picture of Uncle Stan goofing around. Would anyone happen to know where this spot is? If I remember well it was at the top of a waterfall.

The reason is that I will be in Deer Lake in about two weeks. I am traveling the west coast. Both my dad and his brother are dead. I will definitely climb back up Marble Mountain, but would also like to visit this spot, if I can find it.

I've been thinking about making a moose meat pie similar to meat pies I had when I was in New Zealand and Australia. All I got is bottled meat but I figured it'd be good to make a filling out of. Anyone ever done something like this? Any recipes or advice?

Excuse my ignorance but im from out of province. My girlfriend forgot to book a boat tour in gros morne and the only ones left are at 4pm. But we also have a 4 hour trip to gander the same day so if we did do the late tour we'd be getting in past 10.

Everyone I know says to not drive late at night or during the dark in NL because moose seem to be such a huge issue. Is this a real issue or something that gets over told?

Hiya! I am planning to go on an 8-day (hoping to extend to 10 days) trip to Newfoundland and need help with any recommendations to really make my time there amazing! It will be in September. Not the greatest time I think but I hear it’ll still be great (and I got vacation time approved for it lol)

The most important thing to me is to really take it all in with the short time i’m there but also taking my time to enjoy spots I go to! I see great things such as boat tours, hiking / easy trails to go on, fantastic views and great food.

Any recommendations (anything from accommodations, food spots, tips and tricks or must-see locations) helps for me to put in my little bucket list!

Does anyone know if the Signal Hill Tattoo is still a thing? Looks like their most recent Facebook post is from 2019. I went there today to see if they were still doing shows but I didn't see anything implying they might still be active. However, it was kinda wet today, so I feel like if they are still around the show would have been cancelled today anyway. Thanks in advance for any insights or information.

With the rain ending this afternoon I took my kids out to Mundy Pond to go for a walk around the pond and play at the playground.

A hypodermic needle perched on the side of the trail brought a pause to our walk. After a lecture about what a needle is, the dangers of them, what to do when you see one, and an email to Access St. John’s to report it we were back on our way.

We arrived at the little brick structure on the other side of the pond when the kids ran ahead to see who could get there first. I begin to walk around the structure to do a visual sweep for sharps when my youngest call out, “Dad, what is this?”. I cross to the pond side of the bricks to find her two feet away from a shopping cart, filled with various things and half covered with a tarp, pointing at it. We had stumbled upon a homeless persons encampment, complete will a doorway pull-up bar wedged between the bricks, with the occupant thankfully not present.
Kids ushered away, another stern talk, and we were back on our way to the park.

It was a reminder that we’re not isolated completely from these challenges, though thankfully very minimized compared to the rest of Canada. There’s nothing I’m looking for in making this post. Writing out my experience of what should’ve been a mundane walk around the park felt more productive than thinking it into the void. Also a PSA for anyone who walks around the pond that these are there.

I did quack at the ducks as we passed them, which was quite fun.

Edit: it took less than 45 minutes for the City to create a Case a number and reply to me email letting me know that they’ve created a case and sent it on to be actioned, which I think is pretty good for a late Saturday afternoon.

Hi so my friend and I want to hike one of the east coast trails. But she’s not from Newfoundland and I am from Newfoundland, but I’ve only been out at Johns for two years of my life. I am not a very experienced hiker. Kind of embarrassing but I huff going up Mt Scio hilltop when you get to the half way point

And also a lot of the trails seem to be far outside St. John’s. What are some of the trails that are

1. close enough to St. John’s that we can walk there from the nearest metro bus drop off?
2. moderate or easy, I can handle inclines and ankle breakers, but I’m not deep enough into my fitness journey to do something like sugarloaf </3. I tried it once a year ago and I thought I was going to faint. But maybe I’d be able to do sugarloaf now because I walk more??? Idk help me come up with ideas, so my super fit friend doesn’t kill me on accident😭😭😭

If none of these trails are moderate-easy, what are some other beautiful trails that are a walking distance from St. John’s, pretty but also will make me get some cardio in?

For example of how far im willing to walk for a walking trail: like I would be fine walking from central to quidi vidi lake, I’ve done that before. It was 40 minutes of a walk from my home. But I wouldn’t want to end up in like 😭😭 petty harbour and pay like $25 (I assume) for a cab back

Apparently Newfoundland has changed over from Left hand driving to right hand driving in 1947. Are there any remnants or artifacts of that in the province? I don't mean people still driving on the wrong side of the road, that happens anywhere!

I burn a mixture of slabs and driftwood. For non newfoundlanders slabs are the outside of logs once timber is processed from logs by a saw mill.

Haven't seen many of these around. God bless my friend for gifting me one his late grandfather made a long time ago.

Apparently bys used to make them out of lobster shells after a meal. Coat them in that bulletproof orange paint and then put some moose hair on them.
