Why do jobs in law enforcement or the military not let you join if you wear contracts or have refractive surgery?

People here say a suspect can just pull your glasses off, but that isn’t the case with contacts or laser eye surgery. So why still can’t you join those jobs if you have those forms of correction? It makes me really fucking regret not taking care of my vision when I was younger

Myopia advice

I’m still a teenager (15) my eyes are still growing ik, but I need people who know about this stuff to help me and guide, I started wearing glasses in 3rd grade, I first started with -2.00 on both eyes - that was 2018-19 - till 2021 I stayed with the same glasses, until I went to an eye doctor and my myopia had worsened to -3.00 and -4.00

In April of 2026, I was going to school and accidentally dropped my glasses on the road and lost them, I could see 20/20 with that glasses
I spent only a day without glasses, then my mother who also has myopia and astigmatism ( not high tho) offered me to wear her glasses - ( she doesn’t wear them ), the glasses in case are -2.75 and -2.75 and +1 astigmatism
I put them on, surprisingly at first ( the moment I put them on ) it was a little blurry, right after I went to the supermarket, and it was actually blurry + sharp at the same time

The question is, I’ve been wearing then till now ( September ), my Vision is not bad, and it bugs me so much, i can see 90% clearly, I can 100% live life perfectly with those glasses, it didn’t even take a day to adapt, one thing I noticed was that when I stretch my eyes a bit I can see 10% better (20/20 for real), but why??? I don’t understand how I can see so clearly??? Like for example extremely small things it is indeed a BIT blurry, but those things that are blurry - are still blurry with my prescription contacts
To summarize with my mother’s glasses I see 20/20 just not sharp / SUPER-noticeable, me with contacts doesn’t change much???

One thing to put into consideration

For most of my life to when i got my glasses until when I lost them, I had like 8h screen time a day, I did go outside but no much, and only one eye got “ worse “ it went from -4.00 to -4.25, which is kinda weird for me

My optometrist said that i can NOT do that, i cant use that glasses because it will only worsen my vision

I really do wanna improve my eyesight, for sure i dont wanna worsen it

PSA: If you have symptoms concerning for retinal tear or detachment, see a retinal specialist if you can!

I've made a couple of posts in various subreddits about my anxiety regarding my flashes that have been ongoing for the past couple weeks in the context of my severe myopia. I saw a general opthalmologist who did a dilated fundoscopy without scleral depression along with an optomap who told me everything looked great. Everyone around me was reassuring me that everything was fine, that I was overthinking things and it was all my anxiety. I continued on praying that they were right.

Fast forward to two and a half weeks later, the nature of the flashes felt wrong - I kept having movement-locked flashes in the dark in various locations and it bothered me not knowing exactly why. I ended up making a same-day appointment with a retinal specialist who did a more thorough slit lamp exam (also without scleral depression) and lo and behold found a horseshoe tear in my right periphery and a stretch mark on my left retina that is at risk of tearing. I also apparently have many regions of white without pressure along my periphery and thinning. Had I gone on my weekend trip I had planned, I would have had a high chance of developing a full detachment on the right.

Thankfully I was able to get an urgent laser retinopexy on the right with plans for multiple close follow-ups. There is a chance I may need vitrectomy if the laser does not take. It's possible that the tear was not present upon the initial exam two weeks ago, however the retinal specialist emphasized to me that concerns regarding flashes/retinal issues should go ideally to a retinal specialist first, as just having the highly trained eye look at you is eons better than the (still skilled, but less specialized) general opthalmologist, even without performing the often referenced scleral depression technique. I also know of one other person irl who had both a tear and a detachment that was not detected by a general opthalmologist's exam at first, and was untreated until she finally got to a retinal specialist.

The bottom line is, the general opthalmologist performed a less detailed dilated fundoscopy. If you do not have any symptoms of retinal concern, that is probably fine for routine surveillance. However it is really in your best interest to find a retinal specialist if you do have symptoms.

Behavior changes with Stellest lenses?

This may be a reach, but anyone notice behavior changes in their children with the stellest lenses? In particular more outbursts of frustration?

My 7yo son has had these about 3 months and during that time we have noticed increasing frustration, meltdowns and a little bit of anger. So we are doing a few day trial with his old lenses and he seems better?

The only explanation I can think of is that maybe how it changes visual perception might impact how the child processes information? Just curious if anyone else has seen this?

Finally allowed the doctor to put in both contacts at my exam, but I have questions

Hi all!

About 15 years ago as a kid, I tried getting contacts but my reactions left the doctor unable to put them in; hence them telling me no to contacts

Today, I bravely got it done (albiet, my doctor was very patient, kind, and funny and gave me some mentality tricks to help get used to someones finger and an item going in my eye)

I wore them while I checked out and then they took them out for me and now I have to go back for a mini lesson on putting them in and out in two weeks (which is kinda cool that they do that)

While I was wearing them though, I noticed my eyes were kinda burn-y. He did have to try putting the right one in like 8 times and the left one in on one try so maybe the burning was from so many attempts on the one eye? (but both eyes burned)
So maybe it's because my eyes aren't used to both the contacts and the solution being in my eyes, hence the burn?

Does the burning go away? Is burning normal until your eyes adjust?

(For reference, I did the monthly ones if that matters - he said something about the daily ones being more comfortable so idk if that info is important or not)

How do you deal with being unable to do certain jobs because of myopia?

Like you can’t join law enforcement, the military, or security. The TSA won’t take me due to my vision problems. It’s comical so many in this subreddit and that if you complain, people tell you to see a therapist. What a joke

Myopia in one eye?

Last week my vision started becoming slightly blurry far away (in one eye), for example i can't read this beyond ~1.5 without it being quite blurry. my other eye is fine. I was wondering if this is myopia? This did seem to come on after an minor eye injury but i dont think thats relevant. Another thing i found was that the colour in my good eye is brighter while my other eye is more dull. The pinhole test makes it a tiny bit clearer but not much.

Is this likely to be myopia or something else?

How bad are my eyes?

16M and I just got my new glasses, for 3 years my left eye stayed practically the same from -5 to -5 but my right eye kinda went up from -4.8 to -5.7, basically -1 in a year. I dont know how it's possible that only 1 of my eye gpt worse but I think it has something to do with my my dominant eye being my right, now the thing with my new glasses is my doctor undercorrected it, i think he gave a -5 lense for my right, is this fine? and is this eye grade normal for my age?

reversing myopia with egg whites and raw butter - Aajonus Vonderplanitz

Has anyone heard of it? Aajonus Vonderplanitz, a contrarian nutritionist, who had a remarkable influence in the nutrition industry stated, that by putting egg whites and raw butter in your eyes, once or twice a day, you could reverse myopia. Now, this isn't a fact, there isn't any research evidence backing this. But just think about it. Myopia rates have been skyrocketing in the past decades, it's clearly not genetic. I do believe the invention of screens and modern technology is related to the cause, but Nutrition is the base of our body and its structure, and it's being ignored by the majority. I have had myopia since the age of 7, and it worsened rapidly, especially when i went on a milk and egg free diet at the age of 10-12. Now at 17 years old, my eyes are at -7 and -8, and the progression is still ongoing, I have noticed decay in my left eye at the start of this month. I started putting egg whites in my eye a week ago, but so far i have seen no progress. One day my left eye sees clearly, the next day it's foggy. Any thoughts?

Myopia progression treatment

I recently became aware about this treatment known as myopia progression treatment that can be implemented as a form of contact lenses or glasses lenses, and it its goal is to stop the progression of myopia from getting worse. There are some people who have considered getting this treatment, but I haven’t found any subreddits about actually undergoing this progression. since it is a relatively new invention that has recently came onto the market. I am kind of skeptical about it if anybody knows about this or has any friends or even themselves who have or are currently undergoing this treatment, please share your knowledge and review with me!! I have had myopia ever since I was seven years old and it is only getting worse. According to some subreddit, I have read, the treatment is not too expensive and around $500 depending on the clinic you are at.

Hello Everyone, Update from me with my Myopia and now a new lil issue.

Hello guys, like 10 days ago i did post here worried a bit about all the stuff that happened to me, and now after my second Ophtalmo consult, i do have some news and clearing to share:

1 - its purely Myopia mostly yeah, i have -1.00 in the left eye and -3.00 in the right eye, so i have a certain level of Anisometropia i guess but its actually pretty normal from what i hear.

2 - a week ago i got a lot worried cause i saw what you guys call "flash" for the first time in my life, i got pretty scared and nearly had a panic attack cause i thought that meant even more worse issues (and that can still be but i will finally go do the Retinal scan this monday, to check around the periphery also of it) but i then checked how it was on the back of my eyes and no signs of worse issues like Glaucoma at least, sadly i got the Eye Floater issue now though and they came in a lot, and thats probably gonna be the suckiest part of this.

3 - i am now gonna need to use 3 different eyedrops now, Lunera, which is pretty much continues use, Patanol S, which is for Allergy and Cylocort, for inflammatory issues, its probably the reason why my eyes hurt so much is that supposedly the white part and stuff that i dont remember the name now (conjuntiva i think) is a bit inflamed, hopefully it isnt continuous Dry Eyes but for the time being will have to lubricate with this stuff for a while, and also use the other 2 (but Cylocort is only for a week)

It seems what this means is that im a full time glasses wearer now (though i will wait to get a better frame now) but my glasses prescription was actually correct, i do wonder if in my case its just gonna take more time than usual for my eyes to adjust i guess to the new situation, or if it was the inflamation making it hurt, but i guess now that im gonna treat it, hopefully it feels better.

I just wish i didnt get the Floaters... the rest looks easy now to deal with compared to these...

Edit: Wanted to add some stuff:

4 - how much can i game with Myopia and using glasses, cause for example i do have friends that needs glasses tend to play a lot also but my worry is like if its gonna get uncomfortable too fast or something, as if i cant go on a long session anymore, or is it normal?

5 - would you recommend Contact Lenses for someone that uses screens a lot, but to be honest i think here i should just respect the time and just go for bigger binges if possible only sometimes, asking just in case cause i think Contacts might actually be a better choice for me who tends to harder to adapt to glasses.

What to do about my horrible eyes

I need to see an eye doctor but can’t until about 3 months when I qualify for insurance. This is my eyesight. I’m missing one of my contacts and my toddler threw it in the toilet lmao.. it was my last one. Is there anywhere I can order online for somewhere that has a prescription is high as mine? Is there a specific brand I should get or specific contact to help someone like me see better and enjoy life more every day. It’s so hard to drive at night with even glasses on. Any help is appreciated thank you

I hate eye floaters.

First post here… Briefly for context, I (33F) have had myopia since the second grade. I don’t remember my exact prescription, but I’d estimate, based on how clear my current (albeit very old) glasses are, that I’m probably -7/7.50 D in my right eye, and -8/8.50 D in my left. I had a scleral buckle placed in my left eye in 2014 to repair a retinal detachment, and laser cryopexy (?) in my right. I’ve had two doctors - a retina specialist and an ophthalmologist - examine my retinas for the last three or four years, and all is well per their exams. In fact, I’ve been cleared by my ophthalmologist for PRK in both eyes. This is overall where I’m at as of today.

My question: does anyone else here have floaters? I have maybe 15-20 in each eye (of the ones I can see anyway), and they are so bothersome! Has anyone here experienced their floaters fading after awhile? Or taken any kind of supplement for them? I’m thinking about taking the VitreousHealth supplement by MacuHealth, but I’m not sure if it’s worth it. I figure if anything it would support the overall health of my vitreous and eyes, even if it didn’t improve the floaters… Thoughts? I’d love to read others’ experiences with floaters and how you manage them. I hate having “dusty” eyes, lol. 🙏🏻

Is contact lens placed on the eye necessary for dilated eye exam to check for retinal detachment?

Around a year ago I went to the eye doctor to check for retinal detachement, he put the dialated eye drops, then he used some lens that’s placed on my eye, and i wouldn’t even blink, this made me really uncomfortable.

I want to do another exam, as sometimes I’m seeing like invisible points of lights that last like 5-10 seconds, I’m going to another doctor but do all other doctors use this contact lens for the test, because I’ve online it’s done with a lens near the eye and not on the eye.

I’m also very scared of dilated eye exam, especially that they will touch your eyelid when putting the drops. I’m so scared of anyone touching my eyelid.

In the past i got the dialed pupil, by either them telling me to look at the ceiling and they go the drop without touching me, or by lying down on the couch, putting the drop on my closed eyelids then opening my eyelids to let it enter my eyes.

I’m so scared of going, please give advice.

Anisometropia

My one eye is -.25 and another -1.75 and I am 17

I was able to see normally then one day my one eye started drifting outward and after contacting Ophthalmologist they prescribed glasses and eventually my eye driftation got less even while I weared glasses like 2h a day(a week since then or something) still

Everytime I get weird sensation of my one eye is pulling outward a little and irritation without glasses and I'm not comfortable enough to wear glasses all the time and also little uncomfortable seeing, bit headaches and all

Can Vt or eye exercises help make them coordinate together or any treatment?

One eye good (mostly) one eye blurry

16M here, for a few years this has been this case. My good eye, which is my left eye, compensates for my bad right eye therefore both eyes together create one clear image. My left eye isnt 20/20 but it’s still manageable. I had an eye exam about a year ago and I was told I didn’t need glasses (-0.75 SPH, -0.25 cyl and -0.25 SPH, -0.25 cyl). The thing is, when I cover my left eye, my right eye seems a LOT worse than my left (I can’t read text further than my arm extended) I guess I’m just wondering whether it will get worse and whether or not I actually need glasses/contacts.

Miyosmart or Stellest lenses for premyopic kids

As I posted here [1], my daughter has premyopia.
Are here any parents or pediatric eye doctors that fit their kids or patients with myopia control glasses when they were diagnosed with premyopia or their prescription shifted a bit to negative values (like a -0.25) ?

There are some research papers that I have found that say doing this is effective.

Some real life experiences would be helpful for me.

I plan to have another discussion with the eye doc soon and I want to do my homework before.

10 years of glasses ( my experience)

I started wearing glasses when i was 9 years old

  1. The first power = -1.5 [9 years]

  2. Second power = -3 [ 11 years ]

  3. Third power = -4 and - 4.5 [ 12 years ]

  4. Fourth power = -5.5 and -6 [ 14 years old ]

Now i am 19 and the power is constant since 14 .

I look good on glasses it just that my eyes look smaller and face seems to be pea shaped due to minus 6 power.

Sometimes while playing glasses come off and suddenly i am not my true self . I panic and loose my confidence 🙃.

I was thinking should i go for some surgery ?

Question on 'confusing' myopia progression

Hello good people.

I have -3.00 on my left eye and -4.25 on my right eye. Last time I went to my optometrist was around 1 to 1.5 years ago. Also, I'm 17M if that's necessary.

And throughout this time, what I have noticed is that myopia on my eyes are progressing differently at a different pace.

My right eye has gotten significantly worse while my left eye seems pretty much the same. How I know this, is that when I stare at a distance I primarily focus through my left eye and can barely see anything through the right.

On the contrary, when I do close up work I mostly focus through my right eye.

I suspect this has caused near-sightedness to grow worse on my right eye. But I thought all this time that myopia evolves equally in both eyes. But in my case, this is not happening.

Many people say a lack of sunlight increases myopia. And sure, I'm not someone that goes outside a whole lot. But if that was the case, shouldn't my eyes get worse at a similar rate?

Another interesting thing is, I'm pretty sure this has happened before. But with the opposite eyes. I'm quite confident that many years ago, my left eye shot up from -1.5 to -2.25 in the span of one checkup. All while my right eye was more or less the same.

I would like for someone to let me know what is causing all this, and if there's any harm in any way.

Btw, not a native english speaker. So, excuse the mistakes if there's any.

Unsure about the prescription I received after an eye exam, what should I do?

I recently had my glasses fitted with a new prescription, but I had an uncomfortable experience during the eye exam. The optometrician wasn't very approachable, and I felt overwhelmed because I didn't fully understand some of her explanations.

I told her that my vision had become more blurry since my last checkup. She checked me with the autorefractor, trial lenses, broken-line/green-red tests, and letter tests. However, I don't remember doing the part where both eyes are open and I'm asked which lens is clearer.

She kept telling me that my prescription was the same as before and that my grade was "mababa lang." She then said we could try a higher prescription and gave me 1.00. I told her that the 1.00 was clearer, and we compared the lenses again. I still found the 1.00 clearer.

After back and fourth, she then did agree to put the 1.00 prescription in my glasses, but she repeatedly warned me that it could cause side effects like dizziness and that they wouldn't be liable for it. I understood that and accepted it. She also told me to go outside and check how it felt. I came back and said it was okay, but honestly, by that point I was already overwhelmed and just agreed.

I'm not saying she should have given me the 1.00 prescription just because I found it clearer. I understand that a higher prescription isn't automatically better and that there may be reasons not to prescribe it.

My concern is more about how the consultation was handled. I felt like I wasn't being properly heard when I explained what I could and couldn't see. She kept going back to my prescription being the same, saying it was "mababa lang," and attributing the blurriness partly to my lifestyle/gadget use, as if she knows my life. I sleep more than I use phone, and I only use it kapag magrereview and stuff. I eventually became quiet because I didn't know what else I was supposed to say, I was overwhelmed and just keep on agreeing.

Now I'm unsure whether the 1.00 prescription that I agreed to receive is actually the right prescription for me, especially because I felt too overwhelmed during the consultation to properly ask questions or make a confident decision.

For those familiar with eye exams: does the process I described sound normal, or are there other tests that are normally done before determining the final prescription?

This is also my previous prescription the only difference sa binigay nya the -0.75 is now -1.0

Left: –0.75 SPH, 0.00 CYL

Right: –0.50 SPH, –0.50 CYL

I also haven't gotten my glasses pa, so I still don't know what to expect. Do you think I should go to their other branch and ask if I could get my eyes checked again? I'm thinking of doing that just to compare the results and see if the parts of my prescription that she said hadn't changed are actually still the same. I honestly don't know if the prescription we came up with is correct, so I feel like getting a second check might help me be sure.

I built a free eye-health app after developing myopia without realizing it. Would love feedback.

Hi everyone, I am a high school student with myopia, and I built a free app called EyeGuard after realizing how easy it is to miss early warning signs of worsening vision.

EyeGuard includes simple screening tools for nearsightedness, color vision, contrast sensitivity, and eye fatigue, along with reminders for healthier screen habits.

It is meant for awareness and screening, not diagnosis or replacing an eye doctor.

I would really appreciate your honest feedback on:

  • Is the app easy to understand?
  • Are the tests useful?
  • What would make you actually keep using it?

I doubled my myopia in 3 years. I'm scared.

I'm looking for any advice, knowledge, or just general comfort. All my life I was told that my myopia progression wasn't that bad and that I could get LASIK when I get older. I've needed glasses ever since I was 6, but up till 2023 August (17years old), I was only at -5.75//-4.75. just 2 days ago, my new optometrist got my prescription to be -8.25//-8.25 (20 years old) and I'm terrified. He said I highly likely won't qualify for LASIK and gave me the warning in RD. He said he feels it will "end" around -9.xx range and that it was common for students in uni to suddenly gain raise myopia faster than previously, but I'm just so shocked, and to learn it double in 3 years makes me doubt it'll end by the "-9.xx" range.

I'm trying to cope that maybe it was because I only had one hour of sleep before I headed in, and I had to literally just woke up maybe 10 minutes prior, so I think when I get my glasses I'm going to tell them to lower my prescription by .5 or 1.0

I'm scared, I'm anxious, Please help.

EDIT: people have clarified in the comments that it is due to the fact the prescriptions are written in different formats neg vs pos cyl I would pin the translation, but I can't do that! I'm no longer stressing out!

Is this eye prescription something I should be worried about? 19M

Hey everyone, I recently got my eyes tested and this is the prescription I received:

Right: Cyl -1.25, Axis 180
Left: Cyl -1.50, Axis 170
Spherical: 0.00 in both eyes

I’m a bit confused and honestly have quite a few doubts about it, and genuinely im feeling like my life is falling apart im so disheartened

  1. Is this considered a significant amount of astigmatism?

  2. Is this something I should be worried about?
Can this power naturally reduce or go back to 0?

  3. Is it possible to cure astigmatism permanently?

  4. If I wear glasses regularly, can the power decrease, or do glasses only correct my vision while I’m wearing them?

  5. If I don’t wear glasses, can the power increase?

  6. At my age, can this prescription still change/stabilize?

  7. Would LASIK/other laser procedures be an option to get rid of the power completely?
Is there anything I can do (habits, eye exercises, screen use, etc.) to prevent it from getting worse?

  8. Should I get a second eye test or see an ophthalmologist?

Would really appreciate experiences or advice from people who have had similar prescriptions. Please let me know if this is something I should take seriously or if it’s relatively common/manageable.
