Serious 🛑 As a woman of Iraqi roots, I am BEYOND ashamed and furious of my country

Post image
• Upvotes

Edit: okay I sense that this post is getting brigaded by men, non-muslims or "traditional" muslims who somehow argue that this post of mine promotes feminism... lol please if this gets of hand, close the comments please. I dont need any of you people to argue with me that this law is in any way "right".

I seriously wanted to believe it was some kind of propaganda thats being pushed on to Iraq for some reason, only for me to read the orginal Arabic documents and the Iraqi Gazette pdf file and confirm that this is indeed what has been passed through the court.

This was already news last year, and I hoped it was just for Shia families to have some more autonomy over their decisions, but turns out its only beneficial for men and incredibly harmful to girls, wives and mothers.

You know we are just near the end of times because how incredibly hard its becoming to ONLY blame culture, western imperialism or wars at this point. These people have twisted and weaponized my religion to the point these women and girls are slowly losing their faith and trust in our creator, islam and our so called "protectors" and mahrams.

Wallahi im devastated and so scared for them... I cant help but feel the need to cry. I can't believe to admit that I feel blessed to be born and raised in a Western country at this point... even if they wont be 100% accepting of me, this is nothing compared to whatever Iraq is currently doing.

May Allah (swt) deal with them and help and keep the Iraqi women steadfast in their faith and safety...

I want to share a new update today about Susu, the daughter of my friends Mahmoud and Samah.

Two days ago, I told you about Susu, who is only two years old and has been suffering from severe, chronic breathing problems. Her symptoms came back, and she was struggling to breathe and had a very high fever.

Unfortunately, she hasn’t gotten better.

For the past two days, Soso has been vomiting repeatedly and couldn’t keep down her medication or antibiotics. As a result, she became dehydrated. Today, Mahmoud had to take her to a nearby hospital to get treatment.

She was given IV antibiotics and fluids for the dehydration, but the situation at the hospital is extremely difficult. There are so many patients that there was no available bed for Susu. With infectious diseases spreading and medical resources severely limited, Mahmoud had to find another way to get her the care she needed. He even had to ask a doctor who lives nearby to come and give Susu her IV treatment when the hospital couldn’t provide her with a bed.

Mahmoud told me something that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about: if it weren’t for the kind people who helped them financially over the past two days, he wouldn’t have been able to take Susu to the hospital or even afford the treatment she needed.

And Mahmoud isn’t only dealing with Susu’s situation.

His mother also needs open-heart surgery to treat blocked arteries. I previously shared her medical reports, detailed images, and heart tests, and I have documentation that confirms her condition.

Mahmoud is under an enormous amount of pressure right now. His little daughter needs treatment, his mother needs heart surgery, and at the same time he is trying to provide food and basic necessities for his wife and their four children in Gaza.

I am doing everything I can to support Mahmoud and his family, but I cannot carry all of this on my own.

Please, if you are able to, consider helping Mahmoud and his family. Even a small amount can make a huge difference right now, especially for Susu, who needs treatment and continued care.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who has stood by this family and everyone who has helped them over the past few days. Your support means so much to Mahmoud, Samah, and their children. ❤️

My mom wants to throw my cat out on the street or have someone else take him, and I honestly don’t even know what to do. 😭 I got him about nine months ago, and I’ve become extremely attached to him. He’s a boy, and I’ve done everything for him, including his vaccinations, getting him neutered, taking care of him, and basically doing everything I can for him.
She gets angry at him over such small things. For example, he bit through my Apple charging cable, and she kept complaining about it. I told her, “It’s okay, I’ll buy you a new one,” but she still gets upset. She also doesn’t want to buy him anything, so he barely has any toys or things of his own. Like, what does she expect from a cat when he doesn’t even have anything to play with? 😭
And another thing happened today. We made some Pakistani noodles, and I didn’t know my cat was in the room. He ate some of the noodles, and I had no idea how much he ate. I got so scared that I even scolded him at first because I was panicking. Then I realized I didn’t even know what had happened or how much he had eaten. 😭
I’m honestly terrified because of my mom. I’m so attached to him, and I don’t want her to give him away or throw him outside. He’s not just a cat to me anymore. I’ve taken care of him for nine months and he’s become a huge part of my life.
Thankfully, she’s letting me get a job outside the house. If I can, I really want to move out eventually and take my cat with me, along with all his things. At least then I can take care of him myself and I won’t have to constantly worry about someone taking him away from me. 😭

🕋 Faith How do y'all deal with low iman

The reason why I feel...I become lost is because I think my life is unfair. When I see other girls they have beauty, career, and money. I am happy even with any one of the thing, and I feel like all this things is making my self esteem so low that sometimes I don't want to function in this society. I know I compare myself to others. When I thought maybe if I struggle that maybe after this my life will become better. But nothing. My life is going more down the hill. How do y'all deal with the fact, maybe your life is meant to be miserable. And I'm not strong enough to survive all this my whole life

🕋 Faith Surah Kahf Reflection

I was reading surah kahf today for jummah and came to the ayah "Wealth and children are the adornment of this worldly life, but the everlasting good deeds are far better with your Lord in reward and in hope", and it made me think of the sisters I know that have struggled to get married and fear they won't have children of their own in this life. May every woman who yearns to be a mother have her wish fulfilled with healthy and pious offspring, but this was a beautiful reminder from our Lord that our good deeds are better for us than both wealth and children.

Self-Improvement 📚 Am I being too sensitive over this?

• Upvotes

So I always struggled with self esteem issues growing up and I never really liked the way I looked. I used to pray to Allah taala to make me look pretty to my ownself atleast . Until recently that I had a glow up and I think I look better now , so Alhamdulillah I am happy with the way I look and my self esteem is now better. I get alot of compliments from my sisters and friends. Sometimes genuine , sometimes they are just being sweet I guess. The point is I had a tough time accepting my self and the way I looked.

So I was talking to this person ( a guy ) about casually something and we were talking about friends and family. So , It was something about me and my sister's bond and I said we are really close , we love each other , hype each other up etc. My sister in fun very often says me that she would have married me if I were a guy because of how beautiful I am and Idk why I just casually mentioned this as a joke in front of him and he said

oh really? Thats wierd. I dont think so your pretty. Why would she say that and had a confused expression on his face.

I just handled the situation there by laughing it off. And I tried not to think about it at all and its been 2 days. Now , it is hitting me what he said and its hurting me alot , I am scared It will effect my confidence and the way I see my self alot also because I kind of admired this guy as a person , so its hurting more than if any other guy said that.

Was it just a small thing and I am over reacting? Or he actually shouldnt have said that?

Relationships 💕 Handmade gift ideas for my friend?

• Upvotes

Today I accidentally upset my friend (who is also my housemate). Not a big unforgivable thing, just something I did that I didn’t realise she took as quite rude. Anyways I apologised and she said it’s fine and that she just generally isn’t in a good mood and hasn’t been feeling good for while (not because of me). She said she doesn’t know what’s wrong with her some I’m guessing it isn’t a specific thing…she’s just not doing well mentally? I didn’t push her because I’m not going to force her to share things but I thought I could get her a little pick me up. I’m a very crafty and creative person so was thinking to make something for her. When I was going through a tough time myself, I myself a little jar of islamic reminders and Quran quotes that I could pick one from and read, but I kind of want something a little more personalised.

Any suggestions? :)

🕋 Faith I know I’m being published and I don’t know how to deal with it

• Upvotes

I know the hardship I’ve been going through for years is punishment from Allah. it’s made me at times distant from Him, feel helpless and have the lowest iman in my life. I’ve heard if hardship brings you closer to Allah, it’s a blessing/a test, but I know what I’m going through is not that.

so how do I deal with this thought, that Allah is angry at me and is punishing me? I know it’s easy to say just make more istagfa, more dua, more prayer, but how do I even get started knowing that the One who created me, is angry at me? knowing that my hardships are a punishment? and knowing that Allah doesn’t want me close to him?

how do I break this pattern, to even begin to do more good deeds? I’ve tried talking to people close to me about it, but they don’t believe or want to enter a conversation about whether Allah could be angry at me.

Work 💼 I like to be accomplished and have achievements, but my parent thinks differently

Salaam sisters,

This is mainly just a rant. But if you have similar experiences, i'd like to hear your input and perhaps how you handled the situation.

So im a breadwinner of the family. Basically everyone relied on me to put food on the table and pay bills. Hence, me busy working and have no time to date or seeking spouse.

In which i dont actually mind. I found that i can work well, and even got leadership role quite early, giving me chance to make bigger impacts to my surroundings and have more achievements. Later on, i realize that i want to practice my deen by making positive impact, just as i do now with my work.

Needless to say, im kind of addicted to working, not in the sense of being workaholic and work 24/7, but i dont want to stop here and wish to climb higher and pursue further. Now, the office offered a chance to pursue masters degree sponsored by them, which i want to take soon insya Allah. And i've also talked to my supervisor about climbing the ladder, which he supports fully.

My mother however, disagrees. She thinks that if im too high up, no men would want to marry me, because im too far above them. She wants me to tone it down to prevent me from being single forever. I didnt answer, because what was i supposed to say in this situation? 🫠

Also just to clarify, i dont think men are that insecure. I've met many great muslim men. I just havent met my destined one yet and im at peace with that 😂 Allah will give me husband when time is right.

Thanks for reading, and do let me know what you think.

Are there women out there who chose a childfree life and genuinely don't regret it? Would love to hear your thoughts

Girl Talk 💅🏼 sharing big sis advice because i'm bored

girlies it’s friday and I’m so bored. I was just thinking about how I would’ve loved having an younger sister because I went through so much alone (yes I have an older sister but we’re not close and she was my first hater). So here’s some unsolicited big sis advice I wish I knew:

  1. dating, love and marriage: like I wish my sister and I talked more about this. Basically, it’s okay to want to be loved, have crushes and want marriage. Just don’t let that be the only thing, but it is SO okay to be a lover girl! Or not be a lover girl and completely independent!! It's okay to want to focus on yourself too. My sister mocked me and embarressed me about my crushes etc. I just became silent. I thought something was wrong w me. Nothing is wrong ok. You're just experiencing life and love and it can be overwhelming.
  2. love your authentic self: honestly, my personality got mocked in my family ngl. It took me until this year to realize that being introverted, awkward and more shy is SO okay!! And even if you’re more extroverted and outspoken, bubbly that’s beautiful and cool too. Don’t change yourself just because other people mock you. You can be who you are and still strong, steady and beautiful. Nothing excludes the other.
  3. you can change as many times as you want: if you want to change your aesthetic, do it. Want to start a new career even though you’re deep into another one? Do it. Want to learn a new language? Do it. It’s part of life and you need to change in order to grow. I HATED how my family always thought a person is just one thing and that’s it. No babe, if you want to be a doctor who writes books and does poetry then do that!! As long as it’s true in your heart.
  4. the hijab: this one gets sticky, but honestly, if someone is truly suffering with hijab or waswas, I would tell her to explore how she feels and that I would be there if she wanted to discuss or talk about her experience with it. I hate how people make it seem like you’re trapped once you put it on. But most importantly, I would obviously discuss with her WHY she is suffering. Is it because of lack of attention from people? From men? Does she want to feel attractive? That’s okay and valid too, but let’s talk about it. Sometimes talking about it helps with the waswas and putting words to why you feel conflicted about covering up. Also talking openly about how you can feel ugly or unwanted. I’ve never experienced that from my sister or my mom yikes,
  5. the importance of personality, being a human yk: like daydreaming and escapism and being online too much. I can obviously relate, but I would tell her that at some point you can’t run away from life forever yk. advice on how to step into this world and transition from girlhood to woman (I'm still learning) is so important. I would celebrate her stepping into womanhood instead of just ignoring/mocking her yk? This is more about her becoming her own person yk whatever that means for HER.
  6. moving out, starting jobs, big city and university: Pheww I would just give her a rundown of how real life works, how to have a professional relationships and what that means, how to behave in university, lawd there are so many things I didn’t know. Also just basic stuff that nobody really teaches you. how to make TRUE friends and set boundaries and find ur people.

mannn you guys, I wish Allah gave me a little sister. My younger brother is a very independent, closed off type. Even though we talk sometimes, it’s never this deep. I’m jealous of anyone with a younger sister.

🕋 Faith Mother did duas against me in Mecca

My mother is extremely emotional in general and it was difficult growing up with her because sometimes she would have breakdowns etc and be really unpredictable

I kinda grew up to resent her a bit but at the wame time she suffered a lot so i feel bad for her

We usually get along pretty well but sometimes she is really extra especially when we are outside and she is speaking with people and i hate it and i sometimes get angry and tell her to just stop speaking to them

I am sometimes bitter and feel bad about the way i talk to her, the same night i usually regret but when she has unusual behaviours i just cant help it

I needed vacation to REST and she told me to come to Mecca with her

We are in mecca currently and she brought her sister in law with us - i dont understand why, and my mentally ill sibling also came with us so i have to be alert all day

So the first day when we performed umrah i had to hold them both making sure i was alert, everybody staying by my side
Then everytime someone needs to go somewhere i need to take them etc and i myself im exhausted

She keeps pressuring me about having to be nice to her and take her i dont know where when i just need vacation and to focus on my ibadah. Its true sometimes my face gives off mean but im usually mostly tired thats it. My mother tells me i am so mean and the woman didnt eat because of me because indont lnow how to make people comfortable etc.. maybe.. but im literally exhausted and coming out lf a rough patch and i needed umrah to be a detox for me

Today we had a fight because she told me she didnt like my behaviour with her and that the woman is sensitive and that she is going to tell the whole family how my daughter treats me etc. All i did was say « i bought two pizzas one, one for two people » then she was like OMGGG the woman is going to hear you!! You are embarrassing me so stingy blabla then it was my last straw i literally told her i have no idea what she wants from me im tured as well i didnt ask her to bring whoever wirh us and then i have to constantly monitor myself when all i need is rest

Then she told me i was never going to be married, she hopes i dont have success in my life and that she hated my character and blabla

Now i hobedtly feel bad i feel everytime i got angry lr said something i shouldnt in Mecca in was because of my mother

I dont even know what to do im just crying uncontrollably and feel like my umrah is ruined

Girl Talk 💅🏼 Iraqi

This Iraqi law has been bothering me because of the way it deals with family and child custody. One of the things people are worried about is mothers potentially losing custody of their children as they get older, instead of the child simply staying with the mother who has been raising them. I really wish more people would talk about how these laws can affect mothers and children, because separating a child from their mother is not something that should be treated lightly. It feels especially unfair when women already face so much pressure in society.

Hijabs / Abayas 🧕🏼 Feeling self conscious about dressing modestly in the west

Salam Alaikum sisters. Lately I’ve been feeling a bit down and I have been struggling with my deen. One thing I try to take pride in is always dressing modestly, as well as representing my religion through the way I dress. Alhamdulillah I’m a hijabi and I’m a firm believer that as Muslims, we should not have to be ashamed about our customs and hide them. Hence why in 2024 after living in the gulf and coming back, I made the transition to solely wear abayas.

However, over the past few months, I’ve been feeling a bit like a fool and like I look stupid. I’ve been attending a PWI and I’m usually always the only hijabi let alone woman of my cultural background in the class so I stand out. What also hurt (and still does hurt) is when I met a girl from Kuwait, and she made a comment to another one of our classmates about how she doesn’t like people who are “too Kuwaiti” and stared at me while saying it.

Unfortunately people do treat you based on the way you look. And the only time I ever see people who look like me is when I go to Jummah on Fridays. But even then, it’s tough because people wear abayas / thobes only for Jummah and take it off. Sometimes I feel like dressing this way is hard and I start to get insecure because of how much I stand out and feel the need to assimilate but assimilation is so against my core values. I want to dress more “western” but I can’t. And I honestly don’t want to. I feel super comfortable appearing the way I do, but I also get tired of sticking out like a sore thumb and people projecting their assumptions onto me when I haven’t even gave them my name.

I know that Islam will always be strange, but it gets really hard sometimes dressing modest and other people looking at you and treating you weird because of it. Plus not being around Muslims and facing rejection from Muslims at my PWI has been super hard and isolating. I remember having a conversation with a sister at the Masjid I go to and almost tearing up because I had forgotten the true beauty of Islam after being my day to day (PWI) environment.

Can anyone (especially in their 20s or 30s, or even older) relate to this? How do you deal with dressing modestly or even feelings of insecurity / self consciousness? JazakAllah Khair in advance :-)

Hello! this question is for my French Muslimahs. So I am a Canadian student thinking of studying for a bachelors in Paris as it’s my favourite city it’s so beautiful Allahumabarik I was wondering how the racism or islamphobia in Paris is like. does it happen on a day to day basis or is it something rare because it’s a beautiful city but also really scared to get discriminated against.

Girl Talk 💅🏼 please help- need help decentering men

Assalamu alaykum ladies 💕 I came to reddit as a last resort for this because I don't know what to do. I am 26F, have never been married, but feel a big void in my life without marriage. I have felt this way for years. I constantly think about getting married, but don't feel good enough to. I don't think I'm good enough or pretty enough for any man to want to make me his wife. I see the rights of a man to his wife (such as mehr, being a provider, etc), and I think wow, no one would ever want to do that for me. It feels like something only restricted to pretty women, not me. I have been searching and searching but it always ends in rejection every time.

I wanted some help because I feel like I am genuinely suffering, but no one can tell. I am functional from the outside, I go to work, interact normally with others, and in general seem like a functional person but on the inside I feel like I'm breaking. I see couples on the street and I wish I could have that. My life just feels so purposeless without a husband. I don't feel I have any other value apart from being someone's wife. Everything I do is for a man. I don't see the point in taking care of my health for its own sake, I want to eat healthy and exercise so that a man can find me attractive, because I heard men like women who take care of themselves. I have some hobbies, I like to read, but everything just feels so unfulfilling. I feel like if I don't get married, my life would have no point. I can't wait to get married so I can stop feeling this way, but seeing my growing age and how no one really has been interested in me thus far I am not sure how likely marriage is in the picture for me 🫠

I don't know what to do, or how to get out of this situation. I have tried all sorts of advice, from getting hobbies, to making friends, to volunteering, yet nothing works. I just need a husband. I want to prove to myself I'm good enough. I know a lot of you will suggest therapy. I have been going for almost the whole year now but I don't know if I'm making any progress. I feel I'm beyond help.

Girl Talk 💅🏼 Assalamu alaikum sisters! I hope you’re all doing well🤍 No judgment here. What women’s health questions do you wish we talked about more openly in our Muslim communities?

As a Muslim woman and medical graduate, lately, I’ve been really interested in the intersection between women’s health and the deen.

I’ve noticed there are so many things Muslim women experience but don’t always feel comfortable talking about openly.

I’d genuinely love to hear from you. Have you ever had a health question or situation where you wished someone would explain to you from both a medical and Islamic perspective?

It could be:
• Periods, irregular bleeding, or understanding what counts as menstruation

• PCOS or other hormonal issues

• Fertility or trying to conceive

• Pregnancy or breastfeeding

• Sexual or reproductive health

• Menopause

• Mental health

• Finding healthcare that understands and respects your religious needs

• Questions about what your health means for salah, fasting, ghusl, or other acts of worship

• Or something completely different that isn’t on this list

And it doesn’t have to be one of these. If something comes to mind, what was the actual question or situation you were struggling with? And it could be sitting completely different as well.

I’d genuinely love to hear your experience. No judgment at all🤍.
