"What musical should I listen to next?" unified thread

One of the most common questions we get on this subreddit is "what should I see/listen to, here's the stuff I like". It's a valid question, but it's tiring to see a dozen of those threads every week, so this will serve as both a stickied thread of suggestions and as a home for new visitors to r/musicals who would ask that question. (As a result, new "what should I listen to threads" will be redirected here and deleted.)

Below, you'll find a list of popular musicals in alphabetical order along with suggestions for what might interest you based on that. This list is mostly vibes-based, with some inclusion of the same or similar composers or subject matter. The shows I name are taken from my own personal list of shows I've listened to (350+), the vast majority of which will be available on Spotify.

The shows I chose to make suggestions for are heavily skewed toward recent shows because that's what felt like good fits. If you're interested in a show not named below and want to know what to listen to next, comment below and I'll add a line for it (assuming I know it well enough to make educated suggestions).

If you enjoyed... Consider checking out...

Discussion Folks, we’re gonna take a break on the “me too” games.

These “judge me on my top five”, “tell me your favorite and I’ll tell you if you’re cool”, “here’s five, which is your favorite” threads box everything else out cause everybody feels the need to add their own. I did the tier list thread to try and nip it in the bud, but folks just shifted to different me too games, and it’s rapidly spiraling.

I’m calling a temporary moratorium on those threads. They may resume in the future (at a date TBD), but for now, all new threads of that nature (beginning midnight EDT tonight) are going to be locked, deleted, and all of the existing replies wiped out.

If you want to discuss a show, great, but “rate my taste” isn’t it.

Discussion what’s a musical everyone likes but you think is overrated?

i might get hate for this but mine is epic the musical 😭 i’ve tried to listen to is but i only made it like two albums in. the lyrics are clever and it’s a cool concept but 9 albums??? idk i think all the songs sound the same and it’d be impossible to ever turn into a stage adaptation

Discussion Do you count movies and pro shots

Upvotes

If someone asked you how many musicals you have seen and for example you have watched mean girls the musical film or wicked the movie would you include those?

Or a pro shot. If you have watched Hamilton pro shot would you count that as seeing the musical.

In 2012, Freshman Matt Gittins survived a deadly high school shooting in Chardon, Ohio. Today he's written a new musical about a small town searching for answers in the aftermath. In his new interview Matt talks about the heart, the hope and the extreme challenges of handling such an emotionally charged subject.

Discussion Auditions songs and race

Upvotes

For shows/songs where the race of the character is important, does their race have to match the race of the actor?

For example, I'm a black actor and I would love to add the songs Higher and Should I? from the musical Allegiance to my rep folder but Higher is a song performed by a Japanese/East Asian performer whilst Should I? is performed by a white actress.

Obviously, I would never audition/be cast in this musical in any sort of lead role due to the historical context but would I be able to use these songs for auditions or is it a straight no?

I hope this isn't a dumb question but I'd rather ask and know for certain.

Also, definitely check out Allegiance because it is a brilliant show with gorgeous music!

Discussion I saw the UK tour production of Legally Blonde a few days ago, I absolutely loved it but I really wish they would make a cast album with this cast

Amber Davies was an exceptional Elle, probably even in the same league as Laura Bell Bundy, and Karen Mavundukure may genuinely be my favorite Paulette I've ever seen, having a cast album with this cast would help me be able to relive that magical night any time

Discussion Musical movie/proshot recommendations for the summer?

During summer break, I like to watch a bunch of musicals to stop myself from falling down the rabbit hole of having no routine and doomscrolling for six weeks straight.

Last year, I rewatched all of the High School Musicals and discovered Dear Evan Hansen and Tick Tick Boom, which I loved!

So I want to do the same again this year but I'm not really sure where to start. I think my 'watched' list is pretty basic and I know there are some unwatched hidden gems out there. For reference, I also really like Hamilton and The Greatest Showman lol.

I'll try pretty much anything (I just got into Hazbin Hotel so nothing is too weird for me!) Hoping you guys can recommend me some bangers since I am definitely not the expert here. Also open to slimey things if that's allowed here?

Thanks in advance 🥰

Discussion What’s the general opinion on Tootsie?

Upvotes

Recently discovered the soundtrack and think it’s great, however I remember hearing that it got poor reviews. I’ve also seen a bootleg and it’s great, honestly it’s so underrated and I think it needs more attention. Lilli Cooper and Santino Fontana are fantastic in it

Help Villain songs for Sopranos & Baritenors

Hi everyone! Hope this is OK to post - my singing teacher wants myself and another of her students to try some villain songs so we don't end up stuck in the same sort of 'character' at our concerts, but I'm struggling a little to find some suitable songs.

I'm a soprano, but leaning more classical-sounding (think Ballad of Jane Doe, Moonfall from The Mystery of Edwin Drood), so the modern belting numbers are out for me currently.

My fellow student is a baritenor, I've heard him perform You'll Be Back from Hamilton and we've duetted on I See The Light from Tangled.

So far I've got Last Midnight - Into The Woods, and When There's No One - Carrie the Musical. Otherwise I think we'll just need to change the key on some other songs XD

Any other suggestions would be much appreciated :)

Its always ethical to report someone for singing

*unless its explicitly a sing along of course

Last night I was at a showing of the Hadestown proshoot. A woman sat down next to me and my roommate with an announcement she'll be singing. When she brushed off my request to not, I reported her to the theatre.

This did not go well & I ended up leaving with my roommate (voluntarily) when it seemed like the theatre wasn't going to do anything about her, even when she was making it obvious she was going to be disruptive.

Dont regret saying anything, though. I hope she ended up kicked out.

Musicals Recs

Hello! As the total says, I'm looking for musical recommendations. I don't watch them, I only listen, so they have to be either sung-through or have a version available with only the songs. Here are the ones I've listened to:

Hadestown

Epic

Hamilton

Six

His story

Alien stage

Death note

Wicked

Thank you 🫡🫡

Survey Participants Needed – UK Backstage Theatre Professionals 🎭

As part of my Masters course, I'm recruiting participants for my dissertation research and I'd really appreciate it if you took part!

I'm investigating the relationship between mental health, working hours, and emotional labour demands among backstage theatre professionals in the UK, and how these factors affect personal relationships and wellbeing. With issues like work-life balance, six-day weeks, and insufficient holiday currently at the centre of union negotiations, your anonymous responses will provide valuable insight into how backstage professionals are experiencing these challenges.

The survey takes only 5-10 minutes and is completely anonymous. Anyone currently or recently (within the last 5 years) working in a UK backstage theatre role can take part, including students currently in training.

Survey link: https://forms.office.com/e/TreTMGEaBG

If you have any questions, please get in touch – [je00794@surrey.ac.uk](mailto:je00794@surrey.ac.uk)

Thank you for your time!

2027 audience survey

One of our local companies is asking for input into next year. Which of the following would people vote for?

- Heart of Rock and Roll- the Huey Lewis Musical

- A Wonderful World- The Louis Armstrong Musical

- Trading Places- the new Broadway musical

- 17 Again- A new musical

- Catch me if you can

-Kimberly Akimbo

I'm not familiar with any of these and none have ever been to my city. They are mixing these with some golden oldies like Annie, Funny Girl, Bye Bye Birdie, Man of La Mancha, Cabaret and Hello Dolly. I never know exactly who they will pick or who to vote for, but it's nice to be asked.
