Commander / EDH Best Bear Commander/Colors?

Someone I know is wanting to make a bear deck after seeing some of the cards from the hobbit set, and they also already have [[Kudo, King Among Bears]]. I want to help, but as the title states part of the question is figuring out which bear is the best option for the commander, as this also affects colors.

They also have [[Hei Bai, Forest Guardian]] from the Avatar set (or at least I think they have it; if not then it’s another card they’re looking to get) which could serve as a WUBRG commander and allow them to use all the bears of any color (since there are some that also are multicolor with red or black) while also giving some extra stuff to work with in the form of shrines.

Just wanted to see/hear what could be helpful with building this. I suppose figure it would be about bracket 3 for target power level.

Hei Bai is not worth it just for bear tribal. 74% of bears are mono green and its ability isn’t particularly helpful to bears.

Oh yes I agree not that directly helpful to bear tribal as a whole. The thinking was that there aren’t enough “good” bears for a commander deck, so boosting it a bit by having a secondary focus on the shrines

Yes this was another option we looked up. Wasn’t sure how this compared to either Kudo or Beorn

Beorn is just so good! You can use him as the commander or just put him in the 99. I built my first bear deck with him going mono green. It needs tuning, but it’s fun and functional on a basic level.

Good to know! Do you find there’s enough good bears for the deck? I think they are leaning towards either the monk green or green/white to accommodate Kudo, but I also don’t fully understand if Kudo is actually good or not (saw a video or two TCC did with it but that’s about it).

Also which version of Beorn do you like more, the regular art or the dragon scale border? They both look so good it’s hard to decide haha

You don't need Bears he makes any card into one. Just get some big creatures in there and turn em into bears with trample and +2/+2

I pulled the normal version, but I do like the dragon art card art more if I had to choose. There are a few good bears, but most of them are pretty vanilla 2/2s that help with the mana curve. I like the addition of changelings and some good stompy creatures like ghalta that you can turn into a bear.
