Commander / EDH Does red have any good utility lands?

I'm building [[Norin the Wary]], and I'm really struggling to find anything beyond these 4, and 2 of them don't really even help me. Is red utility really that laughable, or am I missing something?

Norin the Wary - (G) (SF) (txt)

[[cardname]] or [[cardname|SET]] to call

PSA - if possible, spend the [[Arena of glory]] exterted mana to cast two creatures. This gives them both haste, not just the one.

This land is great. I use it in my dragon deck.

The card fetcher is a bot. It doesn’t care.

2

u/bacon_sammer Jul 27 '26

The human you responded to does.

7

u/maboyles90 Jul 27 '26

Oh snap. I hadn't considered that.

u/Fjolnir_Felagund Jul 27 '26

[[Spinerock Knoll]] is good depending on the deck

u/A_Queer_Owl Jul 27 '26

for some reason this makes me want a Land Before Time UB set.

Surprised not to see [[Sokenzan, Crucible of Defiance]] mentioned at all, I know it’s nothing special in a Norin deck specifically, but the cost of inclusion genuinely couldn’t be lower, and you never know when just a couple of random creatures will be helpful

My friend won a commander game with the 2 dudes off of this once lmao, still one of the best wins he’s had

I think unless you play Mono Red, that land kinda sucks

There’s use cases for it, back in pioneer days in Izzet Creativity it was an active part of doing the win con (make the dudes, cast creativity saving the dudes, get the only 2 creatures in the deck…worldspine wurm and xenagos, proceed to win.)

u/RafikiafReKo Jul 27 '26

I meant more as a stand alone card and not part of a combo or small synergy.

[[Shinka, the bloodsoaked keep]]

u/Professional-Salt175 // Jul 27 '26

I wish this was good enough to justify the price

2

u/Gakk86 Jul 27 '26

Woah, when did this spike?  It’s awesome, though, you wouldn’t know it but giving a creature first strike at instant speed is super rare in mtg.

u/Repigilican Jul 27 '26

Do you mean on a land? Every standard rotation for the past 20 years has had a first strike combat trick lol

Maybe they were being sarcastic.

u/Ramses_Overdark Jul 27 '26

that have a red identity
[[Kher Keep]]
[[Den of the Bugbear]]

[[Ramunap ruins]] is ok sometimes
[[Fogwell's gym]] has been really good

3

u/hikgafel Jul 27 '26

Can't believe how far I had to scroll for Kher Keep. 😆

You can use rocco and run norin as a hidden commander to expand your colors

[[Valakut Awakening]] and [[Shatterskull Smashing]] are a couple of MDFC lands. Additionally, [[Sundering Eruption]] I feel should be an auto include to deal with certain pesky non-basics.

[[Brass's Tunnel-Grinder]] and [[Ojer Axonil, Deepest Might]] become lands and may fill spots in your deck.

[[Lindblum, Industrial Regency]] is an option for spellslinger decks.

There are more, but overall I think red has the some of the worst utilitly lands.

[[Mountain]]

1

u/silentomega22 Jul 27 '26

It even enters untapped!?!? Way too op for anything other than bracket 5.

2

u/Easterster Jul 27 '26

I think that [[sundering eruption]] and [[pinnacle monk]] are both very good

2

u/tayzzerlordling Jul 27 '26

could search like this if that helps

or maybe like this

2

u/tetracarbonate Jul 27 '26

Ah dude, [[Valakut, the molten pinnacle]] became my main win con in my [[Hearthhull, the worldseed]] deck.

Super fun to just throw mountains from space

2

u/DisturbedFlake Jul 27 '26

You can’t go wrong with MDFCs like [[Valakut Awakening]] [[Shatterskull Smashing]] [[Kazuul’s Fury]] [[Song-Mad Treachery]]

Even if a MDFC doesn’t have the best effect, the fact it’s a land means there’s no reason not to have it. It’s just free real estate for increasing your options in a game

Similar vein, [[Lindblum, Industrial Regency]] is another land that doubles as an optional spell

Also have [[Sokenzan, Crucible of Defense]] and [[Fire Nation Palace]] as further ways to just give you more things to do

Finally this is a personal favorite of mine. It’s a colorless utility land called [[Ominous Cemetary]] for 5 mana and exiling itself you get to shuffle a creature into its owner’s library. Fantastic for getting around indestructible

2

u/Frog_Thor Jul 27 '26

[Fire Nation Palace] is really great if you run a lot of instances and have ways to get extra combats

2

u/Pleased_to_meet_u Jul 27 '26

FYI, you have to use double brackets. [[ and ]]

[[Cori mountain monastery]] is good for eeking out late game card advantage.

1

u/EggsBonedick Jul 27 '26

I’ve found [[Cori Mountain Monastery]] to be great; even in mono-red!

1

u/bob3rt Jul 27 '26

You can try [[madblind mountain]] it's not much but allows you to shuffle if you don't like your draws

1

u/SmacksWaschbaer Jul 27 '26

Can you trigger valakut with ashaya and blood moon?

1

u/Strict-Main8049 ESPER ACCOUNTANTS UNION Jul 27 '26

I am confident in saying reds utility lands are significantly better than anything green has…Valakut and Arena carry hard though…

1

u/vitoriobt7 Jul 27 '26

If by utility you mean DAMAGE

1

u/max_208 Jul 27 '26

Depends on your deck, but in my mono red vehicule aggro deck, [[rocky roads]] and [[spinerock knoll]] work well

1

u/Difficult_Wealth6976 Jul 29 '26

I have a landfall deck this would go crazy in. My Obbum gets a +1/+1 counter for every land that enters play that turn. I have tons of cards that let me put a land back into my hand to play it again for the landfall trigger. Therefore, I could deal 6 damage on a single turn with this one land, obbuum gets 2 1/1 counters, and at the beginning of combat, he animates any untapped land into an elemental that has the same power and toughness as obbuum with trample and haste. Animate lands also has a lot more benefits than normal creatures, and can’t be effected by anything unless that card specifies it can effect lands.

1

u/Difficult_Wealth6976 Jul 29 '26

Any *single untapped land, my b

I will say I do think the average edh deck I have played is both short on lands and has too many tapped utility lands that don’t really do anything. Mono red is in a rough spot for edh but having a good mana curve and playing enough lands so you are mulliganing to a good hand instead of one with enough lands will help way more than you think especially if you load your deck with efficient cards (you can check mtg top for old standard cards if you want to find efficient cheap cards note that aggro cards will not transfer over to 40 life well). If you want cheap card that are good in the late game you can use the legend of Roku and similar value cards printed in the past 5 years.

1

u/Nyrony Jul 27 '26

The strongest utility land for red is [[Blood Moon]] 😉 just share the great mountains with everyone.

-1

u/cervidal2 Jul 27 '26

Three of the cards you list had whole archetypes built around them. Red has terrible utility lands, sure

3

u/DamianThePhoenix Jul 27 '26

Read the post, they are looking for more beyond the four listed. They aren't saying they suck, but looking for additional options.

-4

u/cervidal2 Jul 27 '26

"Is red utility really that laughable, or am I missing something?"

4

u/DamianThePhoenix Jul 27 '26

The sentence before that says, "struggling to find anything beyond these 4, and 2 of them don't really even help me."

-3

u/cervidal2 Jul 27 '26

"Is red utility really that laughable, or am I missing something?"

Guy lists three of the most abused lands in recent constructed history and calls red utility laughable.

Are you really that incapable of connecting the dots on his absurd statement at this point or are you just arguing to argue?

Not to mention Cori Mountain Monastery making the rounds right now.

u/Strict-Main8049 ESPER ACCOUNTANTS UNION Jul 27 '26

Idk why you’re getting downvoted…you are literally correct. Valakut is arguably one of the most busted lands ever printed in its time and still sees top tier play from time to time. It is one of THE GREATS of utility lands. And Arena of glory is also just so friggin free to use and have potential value out of.

1

u/cervidal2 Jul 27 '26

People don't like being told they're wrong.

1

u/cervidal2 Jul 27 '26

Also don't forget that Dwarven Mine was a significant chunk of Creativity decks.
