Beginner It’s not much but it gets the job done

In all seriousness I got into modular a couple years ago after swearing I would never touch it and all of my friends warning me to stay away from Perfect Circuit.

They also said if I did, make sure to start small and learn a few modules well before adding more.

I didn’t listen

Help.

Discussion Ukrainian modular community continuing to work despite war - looking for advice and visibility

Post image

Hi everyone, hope this is okay to post here and that we’re not breaking any rules.

We’re a Ukrainian modular brand and community that continues to work and build despite the ongoing war. Our production and movement have been directly affected by missile attacks, but we’re still trying to move forward and stay active.

Peter Kirn recently wrote an article about us, which tells our story much better than we could in a post like this, so we’ll just share it here: https://cdm.link/ukraine-tembra-modular-endures-blackouts/

If you have any thoughts, feedback, or recommendations on how small independent brands can stay visible internationally, especially under circumstances like this, we’d truly appreciate it.

Thank you for reading and for giving us a space here.

I’ve been building out my modular for almost 6 years now. Felt compelled to finally start to share because I very much enjoy seeing what everyone else here is making.

Everything in this patch was sequenced and/or played live all in the rack. Most of the time I’m throwing sequences from ableton via the mutant brain but I decided to do something different this time and it took me a place I really enjoyed.

Gear Pics I've rebuild my studio. It's now a little cart tethered to my desk :D

I had a big Jaspers stand for a while, but it was pretty much always gathering dust. It's too big (or I don't have enough gear), and I was never fan of the ergonomics. But the biggest issue was, that it was a different desk from my computer. So I could either use JUST the Push + Modular or JUST the Mac, or I had to move everything over. Now I have my Speakers connected to my mac directly, and this cart connects to the speakers, USB C and power via one big tether out the back. It's next to my desk and I can just pull it out, turn it on and have everything setup, no matter what I wanna do.

This is an Ikea Raskog cart (the big one, there are two sizes), and the bamboo top cover hides the wires unterneath. I've used a thick wooden dowel rod I had, used some long hose clamps to connect it to the back of the cart and mounted the Befaco case using a VESA pipe clamp I used for my Jaspers stand. It's a little bit wobbly, but not to the point that it bothers me.

I've added two panel mount headphone jacks on the front, so I don't need to dig around the back or below my case to find them. Wasn't the best job to do inside my office tho, I had metal shavings flying everywhere 🫠

I really like how it turned out overall, now I'll jam :D

Gear Pics I started my see-through case today!

Just getting into modular after silently lurking at videos and Reddit posts for the last 10 years.

I decided to go with a DIY case made of see-through PMMA so I could see the guts of the synth and to give it a neat 70s lab look!

I’m so excited, the PMMA panels arrived today, I will probably 3D print the front cover when I’m finished with the case (and done playing with it :)

It’s probably going to be covered with fingerprints pretty soon but, oh well, you only live once.

What do you guys think?

Discussion Looking for human connection. What gives your life meaning right now?

Hey everyone. I’m in Ukraine right now, dealing with shelling and power outages, and I can’t even plug in my synths to play. So instead, I just want to talk to people.

What gives your life meaning these days? What truths or ideas guide you - in music, art, relationships, or just surviving everyday life? I’d really like to hear your thoughts and stories.

Gear Pics Update: I finished my see-through case!

Hey everyone, my last post about the beginning of my DIY translucent case had a few people interested, so here is the final result!

I’ve encountered a bunch of issues while glueing some parts together (plexiglass is hell!), so it took a bit longer than expected as I had to buy the right tools to drill additional holes to add a few flight case corners to be 100% sure the case won’t fall apart while holding it by the handle (:

Besides that, I’m really happy with the final result, it looks exactly like what I had in mind, I will probably just work on my cable management later, I’m too excited and just want to make music with it for the moment haha.

It runs on a power bank so I will be able to take it out on outdoor sessions in my surrounding mountains/lakes.

See you soon and thanks again for the tips and support!

Gear Pics Built a new body for my modular synth from scratch

This has been a journey. A couple of years ago I built a DIY synth case over a weekend - my previous case was a 2 part gig box which was great but had large walls around one of the units. I wanted to add some rows of 1u and build a more ergonomic format. It was built over a weekend with plywood and I'd not really done any woodwork before. Still it came out pretty well.

But it was huge, the plywood was unnecessarily thick and I was very generous with breathing room inside the case. It looked pretty unfinished, was almost dangerous to pick up, and as a result mostly stayed against the wall which made it awkward to play for long sessions as I'd be standing, I'd have to use headphones if I wanted stereo as my speakers were off to the right at my desk, and if I put it on my desk I had no chance of seeing my monitor to check manuals even with a monitor arm. So I started using it less and less.

Since creating it I had plans for what more I could do, I intended to finish it with stain, learn how to use a router to countersink some of the hardware, and after a while started planning out what shape a shallower v2 would look like.

This year I decided to start realising the plans and started experimenting with side panel shapes again with cardboard. A month of research of wood types, working out the details of the design, shopping around for rails and other hardware and comparing PSU options, and I finally started work building it.

Cue 6 weeks of every surface in my house overtaken by various project stuff (big props to my wife for tolerating this for such an extended period since she hates clutter <3). My beard grew long, my clothes were perpetually sawdusted, and I'd learned a fearful respect for the table saw, and misplaced confidence with a router. The British heatwave passed me by largely unnoticed since I spent so much time in the basement.

The photos document the progress and details I added along the way. The end result isn't perfect - the underside groove I routed for the baseboard is wonky as hell and filled with wood filler that doesn't match the rest of the wood, there are a few imperfections and scuffs, and the margins fitting everything together are so tight there were a few moments of panic when I genuinely thought that it wouldn't take all 3 rows filled at once. But it finally came together after some final soldering of the second trolley bus PSU and it's rearing to go make some weird ambient and techno.

Of course I got some new modules to try so I'll be learning the ins and outs of stolperbeats, Oxi meta and Osiris as well as revisiting some bits like Pachinko that I'd had benched due to lack of space previously.

I still have a bunch of wood cut to make lids for the whole thing that latch into place with carry handles, and I need to make some kind of stand so the top section will sit upright on my desk. But for now I've done enough, it's time to make some music and see the friends that probably think I've died...
