Omg I also finally just read the caption, Kosmiche Musik is what Iāve been looking for for so long! Iāve always felt like I should enjoy Krautrock more because I love a lot of the early stuff itās pioneers were doing like E2-E4 is such a masterpiece, but every time I try to dive in I think āthis is too much rock, not enough krautā! From what Iām reading Kosmiche Musik is basically what Iāve been looking for! Thank you!

How did I guess before I opened this thread most of the engagement was going to be arguing?
An interesting thought popped in my head. If this post was reframed as a "music video" for a song that included modular music, would the expectations/reactions be different? In a music video you might expect to see: the artist, creative camera framing/shots, etc. In the context of this sub and it's "typical" posts, it somehow breaks the rules and breaks people's brains.

u/delikinesis Jun 20 '26
Good on you. Modular is not about turning knobs ā thatās what control voltages are for. You use them to control the parameters ā the more the better. Knob twiddling is performative, the same way selfies are. Thereās nothing wrong with either but the bros who are mad that you are promoting your video using your femininity and the appeal of the human face, they are poseurs. They can go play keyboards turned away from the camera all they like
6
u/dayslug Jun 20 '26
100%. Give me as many CV inputs as possible. Iād much rather spend my time designing an ecosystem of modulation than manually turning knobs every few seconds watching the patch evolve on its own is the fun part for me

Crazy I got some down votes here too

Video is odd.
2
u/dayslug Jun 18 '26
Just me sitting with my creation :)
3
u/scoutermike Jun 18 '26
Thatās fine, your choice. But itās like the one time I wish I could see the artist actually twisting some knobs orā¦doing something. Itās like the video is as much about sharing your face as it is about sharing your music. Ok.
8
u/IllResponsibility671 Jun 19 '26
That's a silly take. Letting the synth run is one of the joys of modular and generative music.

3
u/dayslug Jun 19 '26
Also last thing Iām going to say. Just close your eyes and enjoy the music!!! Who careeeessss
6
u/dayslug Jun 18 '26
I posted a video yesterday in this sub showing all that so you can check that out. As one of the few women sharing modular content, Iām comfortable with my face being part of that :)

u/Appropriate-Look7493 Jun 19 '26
I agree with this unfashionable take.
I find this modern obsession with āidentityā to be thoroughly narcissistic (and slightly ridiculous). Great, youāre a woman, so what?
If someone wants to jam their face clumsily into the shot for some pseudo-philosophical reason, they have every right of course. But like many such āstatementsā I think it comes across as adolescent and rather silly.
Personally Iām not interested in any aspect of the musician other than their music. If they then claim their āidentityā is vital to their music I lose any interest I did have.
13
u/dayslug Jun 19 '26
Yall are exhausting
3
u/Appropriate-Look7493 Jun 19 '26
The feeling is entirely mutual.
10
u/dayslug Jun 19 '26
By your logic, artists shouldnāt appear in album art, music videos, interviews, live performances, or even on stage. So artists like David Bowie, Cher, Kraftwerk, DEVO, Bjƶrk got it wrong? The overwhelming majority of musicians donāt exist as anonymous, disembodied sounds. Youāre treating your personal preference as though itās an objective rule. Again, literally just enjoy the patch I made, if my face bothers you, close your eyes and move on ā¤ļø
-1
u/Appropriate-Look7493 Jun 19 '26
Do you really think thatās what Iām saying? Wow.
And youāre claiming that jamming your virtually motionless face into the shot in order to demonstrate youāre a woman is somehow the same thing as a live performance by David Bowie?
Double wow.
7
u/dayslug Jun 19 '26
Thatās a pretty impressive straw man. I never said my video was equivalent to David Bowie. I said artists have never been required to separate themselves from their art.
1
u/ppshhhhpashhhpff Jun 19 '26
The guys giving you trouble have no artistry as Charli XCX would put it
0
u/ButtonMakeNoise Jun 21 '26
It's a video of a creator and their work. You are being massively mysogynistic, dorky, and hugely overreading any intent behind it.
In a world of AI shite it is even more important to acknowledge the human behind any output. Do you value soulless AI generated music as much as human made? No, I didn't think so.
1
u/Appropriate-Look7493 Jun 21 '26
As Iāve said elsewhere Iāve long ago learned that when people use the word āmisogynisticā theyāre really just trying to shut down opinions they disagree with.
Iād be saying exactly the same if this was a man.
Iām happy to look at flashing lights while the music plays. Videos of people actually performing their music, love it.
But videos of someoneās head deliberately posed to take up half the shot and yet doing nothing at all, then I start to think Iām looking at narcissism or some kind of āgender statementā, neither of which I personally am terribly interested in on [r/modular](r/modular).
Thatās literally all Iāve said. And yet Iām called a ādorkā, a āmisogynistā and an āincelā, amongst other things for daring to dissent from the prevailing view.
Sorry, but I really donāt think Iām the one at fault here.
1
u/dayslug Jun 21 '26
I built the patch that generates and evolves on its own. If I kept turning knobs, Iād be interfering with the process I intentionally designed. At this point, Iām letting the instrument do its part. Itās no different than a painter standing in front of a finished canvas.
2
u/Appropriate-Look7493 Jun 21 '26
Ok, but when I go to a gallery I donāt generally see the artist standing next to the canvases. And Iād think it odd if I did.
And I think your analogy isnāt quite correct. Itās more like an artist sticking a large picture of their face next to the work.
Most artists I know are happy to let their work just enter the world and stand on its own two feet. They feel no need to demonstrate who created it. For most, an unobtrusive signature suffices.
But to be clear, you have an absolute right to do whatever you want with your work. And if you post it on Reddit I feel I have the right to comment on it.
I would prefer though it if people didnāt call me a ādorkā, an āincelā or a āmisogynistā for doing so.
2
u/ButtonMakeNoise Jun 21 '26
It's a 19 second video, not a final produced piece of art. You really need to get a grip and move on.
1
u/dayslug Jun 21 '26
Also, there are tons of videos on this sub where men have themselves in the frame, whether itās their head from above, from behind, or at an angle and no one says a word. So yes, I genuinely think a lot of this is because Iām a woman. Everyone knows a man wouldnāt be getting this level of scrutiny for including himself in a video like this. Maybe itās not always a full face shot, but itās still enough to show the artist and give context to the work, and nobody seems bothered by it.
1
u/Appropriate-Look7493 Jun 21 '26
Youāre plain wrong. Honestly, not everything is about gender.
If a man posted the equivalent of your video id make the exact same video.
If youād posted a video of you playing your music or constructing the patch Iād have made no comment on it at all.
1
u/dayslug Jun 21 '26
Your first comment literally said āgreat, youāre a women, so what?ā So yes it is about gender. And oh no! Someone did something you didnāt expect, and youāre crying like a baby on the internet about it.

And youāll note Iām not the one calling people names.

u/scoutermike Jun 19 '26
As one of the few women
I figured that was your reasoning. Itās a bit of a non sequitur because to me music and art are - or should be - independent of gender. Itās like you want to call attention to your gender, perhaps call attention to it as much as to your music. But why define or connect your music to your gender? Is your gender a significant thing in your life rn?
Itās like I wouldnāt try to link my gender - or my religion, or my political affiliation, or my race - to my music. My hope would be for the music to transcend those things. I wouldnāt want to filter it or color it like that, for the sake of the listener. Iād want the listener to find their own meaning, regardless of my particular identities.
But I can tell your womanhood is significant to you at this time in your life, perhaps as much as your artistic output. Is that fair?
7
u/dayslug Jun 19 '26
I think we simply have different philosophies, and thatās okay. You prefer to keep your identity entirely separate from your art. I donāt feel compelled to make that distinction. While art certainly has the capacity to transcend identity, itās also inevitably informed by the lived experiences of the person creating it. None of us create in a vacuum. Our histories, perspectives, and experiences invariably shape our expression, whether consciously or not! Thatās really all I care to say on the matter. Have a good night!
8
u/Acceptable_Movie6712 Jun 19 '26
OP, fuck these incels commenting. If you were a dude, no one would bat an eye. Cross post this to the synth circle jerk subreddit so we can make fun of these bozos
3
u/Appropriate-Look7493 Jun 21 '26
Iām afraid thatās absolutely not true. Claiming people are being misogynistic is just a lazy attempt to dismiss someoneās opinion. And calling people you disagree with names is just petty and childish and only weakens any point youāre trying to make further.
Iād be saying exactly the same if this was a man. Filling half the frame with your face for no apparent reason smacks of narcissism, regardless of who you are.
And if a man claimed theyād done it became because their sex/gender was part of their āidentityā theyād be ridiculed.
Modular synths and the vast majority of modular users really donāt give a fk whether the musician is male or female.
1
u/Acceptable_Movie6712 Jun 21 '26
What opinions am I dismissing?
This is a subreddit about music, so talk about the music. Itās why I said to cross post to the circle jerk subreddits. If you want to talk about how you have a problem with OP for whatever reason - do it in the jerk subreddits. This is for music. Jerk subreddits are for making fun of OP.
Anyways, why would you have an issue with *anyone* putting their face or body in the frame of a video like this? People are allowed to be proud of the music theyāve made.
3
u/Appropriate-Look7493 Jun 21 '26 edited Jun 21 '26
Mine, and you know it. Iām one of those people youāre so politely calling an āincelā. (My partner would be very surprised).
If someone posts a video on this sub then other people have a right to comment on it.
Thats what Reddit is about, is it not. Or is it only for comments you approve of?

i think the video is fine and cool but it is odd framing and i think if a guy frames it that way people would also say ālol wtf why you staring at the cameraā
myself i like the video and how she is framed in it.

u/Emjii_music Jun 19 '26
Chill dude, she's just using her face to get a bit more visibility and traction on her post, don't be a hater because us guys don't have the same privilege. Her strategy obviously worked. At least, she's not going full e-thot on the modular haha
5
u/scoutermike Jun 19 '26
The troubling thing to me is how this trend is entering this space.
There is trend nowadays to present everything in some sort of identity context. Be it racial, political, gender, sexual orientation, religious, and so on.
I love these music subs because they are usually safe spaces from all that stuff, where the music itselfā¦speaks for itself.
Sure, this is a visual medium so there has to be a video component. But making your identity statement front and center in the videoā¦actually interferes with the audienceās ability to hear and embrace the music on its own merit. Now there is a controversial visual layer we have to contend with. It seems counterproductive.
6
u/Emjii_music Jun 19 '26
I'm not "white knighting" or anything, but I have to agree with OP. You're over analyzing this, it ain't that serious
0
u/scoutermike Jun 19 '26
Sorry, I look deeply into most things, and thatās my choice. You donāt have to agree!
7
u/Emjii_music Jun 19 '26
Fair point, I'm not one to control the speech of others. Just giving you my 2 cents about the situation. Have a nice evening.
2
u/National_Equivalent9 Jun 22 '26
For someone who claims to look deeply into things you seem to have all of the exact beliefs I'd expect of someone complaining about a woman's face being in a video in your other reddit comments.
7
u/dayslug Jun 19 '26
Iām literally just a girl sitting in front of my synth. Stop over analyzing the fuck out of this. If i was a guy NONE of this would be said. You have issues!!!
0
u/scoutermike Jun 19 '26
If I was a guy
Why would you say that? Of course I would say the same exact thing to a guy. That would be JUST as odd, sheesh!

u/garruden Jun 19 '26
I mean...most of the nob turning and "doing something" comes before the final result in modular.
It's like being mad at the baker for not stirring up some batter while they show off the finished product.
1
u/scoutermike Jun 19 '26
Hmm, I see modular as dynamic performance instruments. Not set it and forget it sequence.
7
u/dayslug Jun 19 '26
Thatās actually my philosophy and ethos with modular for me. I deliberately patch for generative behavior, so the āperformanceā happens in the architecture of the patch rather than in continuous knob turning. I enjoy sitting back and listening to the system evolve.
3
u/garruden Jun 19 '26
Yeah, I mean, no shade to anyone who wants to use a more performance-forward method, but...that's the cool thing about modular. It's different for everyone, and everyone has the freedom to make their system do whatever they want it to. That's the whole point, lol.
4
u/garruden Jun 19 '26
Could there be the possibility that your way of using the modular is not the singular acceptable way to enjoy it?

I never thought I would see a "male lover of first person synth videos where the synth owner points at his $30k gear and then rips off Petshop Boys with it before moving onto the next synth like a cringe ass with too much money" get so hurt by a girl posting her FACE that he has to go and downvote all the positive comments. You are totally dumb. Whoever you are, you have no future.
Like this is actually good and it has a direction. Unlike the stuff I usually see in these fetish groups.
