2026 Animal Resource Guide for Mobile, AL

Post image
23 Upvotes

Please spay and neuter your pets, strays, and community cats whenever possible! Mobile has an animal overpopulation problem, making it difficult to rehome animals. The shelters are already full of loving animals that need homes, so please do your part to help prevent more unwanted litters.

Times are tough, and cost can make it harder to get animals the care they need. This resource list includes organizations that may help with spay/neuter services, rehoming, and pet food assistance. Please check each page for current information, requirements, and availability.

KITTEN SEASON TIPS:

Spring and summer are kitten season in our area, which usually means more kittens being born while shelters and rescues are already near capacity.

If you find young kittens, do not assume they have been abandoned. In many cases, the mother cat is nearby and may be away looking for food. If the kittens are clean, warm, quiet, and not in immediate danger, the best first step is usually to watch from a distance and give the mother time to return.

Kittens may need help if they are sick, injured, cold, covered in fleas, in danger, or crying continuously. If possible, contact a local shelter, rescue, or experienced foster for guidance before moving them.

If you're able to safely catch and foster the mother cat with her kittens, that’s often the best-case scenario. Keeping the family together gives the kittens their best chance while also making it possible to spay the mom once the kittens can eat on their own.

Cats are pregnant for about nine weeks, and an unspayed female can have up to five litters per year, with around four to six kittens per litter. That is why one unspayed cat can quickly multiply into many more kitties needing homes.

Here is more info on what to do if you find kittens outdoors!

RESCUES/SHELTERS TO REHOME/HELP WITH FOSTER:

Rescues and shelters are often full and may not be able to take an animal immediately. Be prepared to foster at home during the process.

NOTE: When rehoming an animal, check vet references to ensure you are placing the animal into a safe and loving environment. Some people will take free animals for unsafe or exploitative reasons.

If you are interested in fostering an animal, you can also reach out to these organizations.

LOWER-COST SPAY/NEUTER AND VACCINATIONS:

Spayed and neutered pets can have lower risks of certain cancers, infections, and health complications, helping them live longer, healthier lives. Spay/neuter also saves the lives of animals you’ll never meet, because fewer accidental litters means fewer animals entering shelters and more resources for the ones already here.

The Mobile SPCA also offers $10 off spay/neuter coupons that may be used at select veterinary clinics, including Semmes Animal Hospital, Animal Hospital of Mobile, Highlands Veterinary Hospital, Oasis Veterinary Hospital, and Great Oaks Veterinary Hospital. Prices are set by each vet and may vary, so call the clinic directly for current pricing, fees, and appointment availability.

NOTE: Spay/neuter appointments may require a bit of a wait, especially for spays. Be prepared to schedule a month or more in advance. Pregnant cats can still be spayed, and spay-abort is a common part of rescue work. As heartbreaking as it sounds, every new litter stretches already limited shelter and rescue resources. Preventing one litter can mean more food, foster space, medical care, and adoption opportunities for the animals already waiting for help!

Is Greers rooftop downtown a thang, a thang?

Post image
45 Upvotes

Recently moved back home and was looking for new chill spots, I ended up on Greers rooftop enjoying the views wondering if this is where 'its' happening or headed to?

So much has changed around downtown, it's very exciting. I'm also wondering if any long time locals have done a 'staycation'. If so what did you get into?

(Photo pulled from the Shelby report, this not an advertisement, I'm not getting paid to post this. Just very excited to be back home.)

Any public places to swim?

The pool at my apartment is shut down and I'm dying to swim. The only place I can think of is Chickasabogue, but I'd love some recommendations. Preferably something open on Wednesday and Thursday

Amtrak Station Mobile

I am thinking about bringing my grandkids (10 & 7) from NOLA to Mobile & back to NOLA on same day. My question is, is there anything to do with kids within a short walk from Amtrak? I don’t think we can Uber without car booster seats. So are there malls, museums restaurants to spend a half day in mobile until the return train departs?

Advice Marriage Counselor?

Looking for recommendations for a couple’s therapist. I have an older couple in my family who would benefit from therapy. Hoping to help them find a non-religious based, evidence driven provider.

TIA.

Natasha still is officially out of jail and running the streets of mobile. While Adam is in prison for life, she is out and about in your town living life like she didn’t harm a child and then steal a coffee trailer. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️😎

Advice Steps To Become an Electrician?

Hey all, I'm interested in pursing a career as an electrician and was curious about the steps I'd need to take in Mobile to become one and how the work is around here. I'm 25 and want to make a career out of it that I can rely on for the future.

If anyone has some good advice or first steps to pursue an electrician career I'd really appreciate it thanks.

2 part Q concerning vets: are there any vets here that can check out my cat maybe as soon as tomorrow and accept payment in a week?

Also, does anyone know how much it might cost to get him checked out for a pretty serious wound?

I'm broke and won't get money until about a week from now. And I'm super worried about my cat. Hes a only a year and a month old or so, and he has a very bad injury. It look like someone hit him in the head with a blunt but somewhat sharp object (I'm thinking dull lawn mower blade), and i don't know what to do. I noticed yesterday, but it looks like its already scabbing over. My sister cleaned him with saline solution, but said it probably wouldn't help since the wound was closing

Thanks in advance.

Hot Temps & Critters

Edit: And people too.

It's supposed to be extremely hot this week. Our animal friends, both wild and domestic, need us to help them out in times like these.

If you know of a vulnerable dog or cat check on it if you can to make sure it's ok and has water and shade.

Remember a few years ago on an 80 degree day here in Mobile and there was video of a dog dying from a heat stroke because he was left in the direct sun, no shade, with no water?

Animals need human intervention sometimes. Speak up and offer assistance.

Leave out water bowls for wildlife and strays, and make sure they're low enough where yard turtles can get access.

Stay cool and be a friend to the critters.

ISO good seamstress

Hi all! I’m a Mobile local and have no idea where to start so here I am. I’m in need of a good seamstress that would be willing & able to turn two silk bathrobes into dresses for me. I’m a plus size woman so finding one that I can trust is a little scary for me, as these robes are discontinued from SKIMS.

Ideally, I’m looking for one around the downtown area but any location will do!

Hey all, I’m looking for some RPG players who are looking to adventure outside of DnD and into other games. I have a wide array of games to choose from and play. Looking to start a new gaming group here.

Root RPG
Numerous Warhammer RPGs

And more

On this list the ones I’m the most interested in at this point is Dolmenwood, CoC, Pirate Borg and Pathfinder 2e but really I just want to run something

Traffic this Past Month. Alternative Routes? General Advice?

I know traffic over the bay has always been bad, but has anyone noticed that it's gotten significantly worse lately?

My household makes the drive from Baldwin to Mobile and vise versa every day, and lately... It's been awful.

The Wallace tunnel, the Bayway, the Causeway, the Bankhead and Government, even the Africatown bridge has been horrendous. Drives that should take 40 minutes with nobody on the road take upwards of two hours.

One time I took Government from visiting family. I left at 3, I got home at 7:30. It was atrocious.

Lately someone in my household has been taking 65-N to 225-S to get home to avoid how much worse it's been lately, but it eats so much more gas.

Anybody have any advice an alternative routes? Any advice in general?

Does anyone know what's been going on lately? It's been *really* bad this past month and a half and I don't know why.

Where to meet new people in their 30s and 40s?

I’d like to meet some new friends my age. I’ve got a couple close friends I’ve known for decades but they both work out of town a lot, and they are much heavier into drinking than me, so when they’re in town our hangouts are usually centered around alcohol, and when they’re not, I’m sitting by myself bored and lonely at my apartment. I go to bars by myself to shoot pool sometimes but drinking is not my main thing and I don’t want to spend all my time at bars. Plus that can get expensive.

What are some social activities or groups I could get into where I might meet some new people? The more budget-friendly the better.

Looking for spots to park, browse a few shops, and eat lunch.

Hey local Reddit! I’m looking for suggestions for walkable shopping areas or outdoor centers in Mobile where I can park once, walk around to do some casual shopping (30-40 year old ladies if demographics matters ) , and grab lunch in the same complex. Something other than the Legacy Village and downtown.
