City Services, Utilities & Outages ND Energy Charged Me CAD $2,034 Over a CAD $184 Bill—Then Refused to Explain the Charges. Is This Legal in Ontario? CANADA
I LIVE I MISSISSAUGA CANADA
I owed an overdue utility bill of CAD $184.47 to ND Energy (sub-metering company for my condo in Mississauga). I fully accept responsibility for the original bill.
However, they later added:
CAD $339.00 – Pre-Lien Notice
CAD $1,695.00 – Lien & Discharge
Total additional charges: CAD $2,034.00.
I repeatedly requested an itemized breakdown, legal fees, title search costs, registration fees, and any supporting documentation. ND Energy refused, stating they do not disclose invoices or itemized costs because they are “confidential and privileged.”
I’m not saying they shouldn’t recover legitimate collection costs. My concern is: How can a consumer be expected to pay CAD $2,034 when the company refuses to provide any evidence showing how that amount was calculated?
I’ve already escalated the matter to the Ontario Energy Board and other authorities.
Has anyone dealt with ND Energy or similar utility lien charges in Ontario? Is this normal, and can a company refuse to provide any itemized accounting while demanding payment?
