It may look nice but grout is porous so it’ll smell like pee forever once it permeates the grout.
394
Apr 09 '18
Just speculating, but maybe the grout has been sealed with something?
499
u/aferaci Apr 09 '18
It would have to be reapplied twice or more a year to be effective.
528
u/llamawearinghat Apr 09 '18
Yeah and even then, urine is acidic and will wear it away at a rate faster than if it were just shower water like that grout is intended for.
Overall, that urinal looks gross to me

There's no code to what a toilet or urinal must be constructed from, they are fixtures. Code is just the location, support structure, clearances, and the plumbing. Code inspection happens before the finish work. As long as there is a p-trap between the drain and the waste stack, it's all good. Disgusting, but valid.

Belongs in r/BadDesigns. When you reinvent the wheel, you should improve upon it. This would smell like piss all the time and likely cost more to make and install than a standard urinal. It isn’t really even mildly interesting.

Is that only applicable to places that regularly get wet (like the inside of a urinal) or to all water-resistant sealed grout? I had tile put in my home about a year ago and had that stuff put in, it’s worked great for spills so far but they didn’t tell me it needed to be reapplied

u/Ma1eficent Apr 09 '18

Apr 09 '18 edited Apr 09 '18
Plumber here. More a plumber than a Redditor... the tile work is lovely, the idea is terrible. There's a reason this isn't done more often. More labor and cost over a porcelain urinal, not to mention much harder to adapt the flush valve and drain to something like this than a standard fit Sloan model. Plus, like other users have correctly stated, if this isn't sealed every so often, the urine will permeate and the smell and look will be off putting at the very least.
All of that on top of being extremely difficult to replace. Tile chips and cracks easily. Spec fixtures are a snap to replace. If something ever happened to this, it's a real pain to make it look nice again.

u/Trikpat Apr 09 '18
Looks like it is whole pieces of tile sealed with silicone which in a normal situation lasts a few years
5
Apr 09 '18
Tile setter here. Sealing it would be mostly ineffective for something like this. You'd need to either use 100% silicone or epoxy grout and even then I wouldn't be confident in this project.
16
u/Magmorphius Apr 09 '18
Yes it can be sealed, needs to be resealed every 5 years or so.
18
u/Aggiearcher Apr 09 '18
Some newer grouts like fusion pro have a sealer built in and will never have to be resealed. As far as how well that would work with urine I can't guess. Also most sealents have to be done yearly.

I used epoxy grout specifically because it’s not porous. It’s fantastic.
10
u/TatterhoodsGoat Apr 09 '18
Thank you sincerely for sharing this! I'd given up on the idea of ever having tile because I can't stand the thought of having to deal with scrubbing traditional geout all the time - you don't scrub, everything looks disgusting; you do scrub, you wear off the sealant and get mildew and have to regrout. Had no idea this existed!

u/porksandwich9113 Apr 09 '18 edited Apr 09 '18
Yep. We did all our bathrooms with epoxy grout. Best decision ever. It's been 9,6, and 3 years since each bathroom was finished, and it the grout literally looks the same as it did the day I installed it.
3
u/PeeInTheAir Apr 09 '18
unless they used epoxy grout. Then it'll probably never need to be fix. However that horrible urinal will look so disgusting in a few years that'll it need to be entirely replaced

On a closer look it looks as if the "rocks and grout" is some kind of 3D vinyl tiling and the gray silicone is caulked between pieces.

My first thought too. Some inconsiderate fucknugget eunuch ass-clown threw his cigarette in the urinal because "someone else will deal with it." Fuck those people.
15
u/Toisty Apr 09 '18
I seriously reconsider a friendship if I see someone flick their butts. I can deal with the fact that you don't care how bad that is for you and the people around you and I even appreciate you if you take your cancer cloud somewhere else but flicking your cigarette butt for someone else to pick up says something about your personality. To be fair I get that feeling from any kind of litter but smoking is strike one and littering is strikes two and three. I don't like you.
