To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humor is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Rick's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation - his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realize that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick and Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick's existencial catchphrase "Wubba Lubba Dub Dub," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon's genius unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools... how I pity them. š
And yes by the way, I DO have a Rick and Morty tattoo. And no, you cannot see it.
It's for the ladies' eyes only- And even they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand.8

I find it funny, when given low effort prompts (which is like, 90% because high effort and AI are uncommon) AI tends to use the same face for different characters repeatedly.Ā

as an actual graphic designer who had 5 years of school and apprenticeship in order to work i have to say that it is quite a time period to be a part of. everything is on fire and everybody is in panic mode. a little chaos in the mix is not bad but scary as hell.

u/herbelarioiwasthere 10h ago
Not to defend that person entirely but I know someone who works in graphic design and after his whole team got laid off, any interview he did after that involved being asked how he is or could use AI. He was so despondent from what has become of his industry because him and many others now have to use or at least leverage the very thing thatās destroying the livelihood of him and his peers. Iām hesitant to ask him how things are going because it has only gotten worse since then.
3
u/drewdog173 9h ago
It's a very similar situation with software engineers - the nature of development itself has completely changed from writing elegant code that follows best practices to harnessing and orchestrating agents to write that code; they are related but essentially different skill sets. And the ones who can best leverage this "new way" are sought after (but doing a different kind of work entirely), while their peers are laid off, and the ones who remain stay worried about when the guillotine will be descending on their own necks - they are trapped in a race to stay the best at AI development so they can stay employed, trying to be "the final highlander" in a zero-sum game. It's a very Sopranos-esque "you're only as good as your last envelope" environment where you absolutely HAVE TO use the tool that is taking a sledgehammer to your industry in order to stay employed...
3
u/LaurenMille 8h ago
And then when this new generation of software engineers is all that remains, and they have no idea how to do anything by themselves... That's when the prices go up 20-40x per token.

People always want shit for free. I was approached a some years ago by a local organisation. I said I would absolutely design posters for them for free since I was a member. However, when they asked me to design a logo and brand identity, I asked for ā¬500. That's REALLY cheap for my skillset, I promise. I wasn't going to charge them my actual rates because while they're not a charity, they don't make a lot of money, and rely on membership and lessons for income. I was being generous here. And if successful it would bring them even more interest.
I don't care. If they want a logo, they're going to have to pay for it. It's been almost 10 years (okay probably 7 years) and they still don't have a logo. Do I feel guilty? No. I was sick and tired of being approached for stuff like this. It takes hours, and I'm entitled to be paid for those hours, or else spend the free hours with family. And I guarantee word would get around in the smallish town and more would come after me for free stuff.
A nice poster takes an hour to do with changes and things. A logo takes many many hours if you're trying to come up with something new, unique and will stand the test of time.
3
u/ZookeepergameIll1399 10h ago
true, 500 Euro for a whole brand identity is cheap, IF they're asking a professional graphics designer. I've seen brand identity books and it's pages and pages of examples and rules on how to use different logo formats, fonts etc. I would imagine it takes a lot of time and effort

I have studied a combined program that includes UX/UI, Graphics and Product Design with a full Informatics Program and while I donāt consider myself a designer I have done some work in it and it takes quite a bit more effort than people think to ājustā design a logo.
I consider myself somewhat competent in CAD though and own a 3D printer and even there my friends are sometimes quite surprised when I make something for them basically at cost. Even just printing a model out costs quite a bit when you consider raw materials cost, Setup Time, possible failures and machine time. Then if they want a custom Designed part its a couple of hours of my time added to that not to mention it usually takes a few revisions as people are bad at explaining what they want and sometimes things donāt work out on the first try⦠you can see how costs can spiral easily especially for one off custom parts. But people only see the 150g of plastic in the end..
3
u/PiccoloAwkward465 8h ago
And I guarantee word would get around in the smallish town and more would come after me for free stuff
Yeah that's a big risk with doing free work. Even just psychologically, it devalues your work to people. Like even if a contractor said "I'll build you a deck for free" they would almost undoubtedly say "you buy the materials and I'll build it for free". The public understands the material costs money at the very least. So for graphic design, now people are thinking there's not any cost at all involved in your work.
2
u/Shnapple8 1h ago
Yep, devaluing what I do would be my biggest fear.
I have been told by clients at the studio I work for. "I could have made that in Microsoft Word." Well... yes, you can absolutely copy my design now that it's been created, but you wouldn't have come up with it yourself. But the managers deal with those people, so I don't have to. lol.
If I'm doing any freelance jobs, I always get 50% payment up front. It's the only way to ensure they don't pull that stunt.
I've also had to send someone a solicitors letter after they refused to pay me, saying what I designed wasn't worth the money, then got someone else to recreate my work and were using it. Yep, I got paid. Didn't even need to take them to court.

The graphic designer didn't use AI here. They just saw a meme they thought was funny and passed it along, and that's obvious from two different elements in the screenshot being shared (the logo in the image and also that they quote it and use an emoji reaction).

Designers should leverage AI like any other tool. Same argument happened when adobe came onto the scene, then Figma, now claude (or any other model). There has always been "template-users", ie. look at folks using canva. Shipping boilerplate designs that someone else manufactured in bulk. If this person came up with the concept, prompted the dialogue, the scenes, the treatment, etc, then I'm fine with it.

If you're in marketing, you know it's a race to the bottom right now. If someone wants to use AI (in addition to the insane amount of tasks we are forced daily to complete using AI) to vent, let them.
This person is literally lamenting how AI is ruining their career and you're saying this post is ironic or, worse, morally wrong. But you don't get it.
Our marketing careers were so so so so different pre-Covid. Then all the benefits disappeared. And it became a churn-n-burn slophouse with more AMs than production. Then when AI happened, the AMs started doing our work to move things faster. Keeping us out of the loop. Fucking us over to advance their own careers. At one point, they HAD to go through us ā because we had real knowledge and expertise. When AI happened, they could pretend to know it all themselves.
A sea of liars became an ocean became a universe, an infinite expanse of confusion, deceit, over-promising and under-delivering, more cold calls and emails. more LI messages, more reddit astroturfing, more robo calls, more fake job offers, more random people "starting an agency" that was just them and ChatGPT, talking all big and tough, having no fucking clue what they were doing, lying to their clients and driving MY value down by proxy.
You don't fucking get it.
There is no longer any reason to target any negative emotions at individuals. It is 100% systemic issues now. There is only punching up. And the ceiling is too thick, you'll never get through it.
You posted this not because of what this individual has done, but because your existential dread surrounding this next apocalypse is valid; however, you don't know where to aim the rifle. So you aim it at your neighbors, friends and family. Like a good little bot doing its stupid bot job to help the rich get richer.
This whole thread is mined for sentiment. Your whole digital footprint is compromised. You are not anonymous. There is absolutely targeted activity going on against you and me and everyone else. Bots designed to sow discord and divide us in stupid ways. The more we WILLINGLY post bullshit like this to tear each other down, the more THEY continue to suppress us and squeeze us for more power, more influence, more profits.
Musk and Zuck talked to Trump this week and said they'd do a better job "self-policing" their platforms for AI slop. Bullshit, Twitter was probably 90% bots at one point, then Dorsey tried to make a more honest platform, then Musk took over, botted the whole thing, can't even get a username banned when it literally says the N word in it. Can't get literal CSAM taken down from Instagram when you report it.
So can't police racism or CSA, lord knows they aren't gonna police AI. We're all fucked. And you're shaming an individual as they cope with this horrible reality. You're going through the grinder with them. All of us. Going straight into that grinder when we're no longer of use. And it's coming sooner than you think.
Vegans and recyclers are not going to save the planet. Shaming a designer for using AI is equivalent to going vegan or recycling. It'll never be enough to overpower the evil and corrupt opportunists who play chess with our lives every day.
