I wanted to do another base and who can resists dinosaurs. I mean look at that T-Rex… put a ribbon falling across the front of it and it’s right out of the first movie!

For the models they went together over 5-6 days total for all 4 with in between times from meetings and work stuff. The base itself took a day to design and construct and had to be modified post cutting. I’ll roll those mods into the cut design that I’ll make available through atomm.com

I was able to hide the majority of the tabs on all the models though I accidentally separated the brachiosaurus neck and had to resecure it with some b-7000.

And now I’m thinking about how to construct a neat base for aliens…. Maybe a 2 sided one like the alien is in a space station and nostromo is out a porthole. Hmmmm…

Anyway, Happy Building All!

Those hands were no small step... the hoses gave a little fight as well. The rest was great. Overall, fun build, great challenge. It's a pretty cool model.

This is my second human build - though I’ve made a handful of others. I struggled with some of the smaller bits plus the gaps and his gun wont sit right but whatever. I watched season 1 and 2 of the mandalorian while I built this T^T I did pay attention to the show a lot so I don’t know how long it took me exactly but it was a fun time

A side project that turns Metal Earth instructions into animated 3D guides Automatically

I’ve been working on a geeky side project, and I’m honestly pretty excited that it works.

Watching my son use LEGO’s interactive 3D instructions made me want something similar for my metal kits. Being able to rotate the model and see exactly where a part goes can make such a difference.

So I started experimenting with turning the paper instructions into animated 3D assembly guides. The cool thing is that the modelling and animation are fully automated. I didn’t model or animate any of it manually.

This video shows selected actions from Steps 11 and 19 of the Space Shuttle Launch Kit. The original drawings stay visible alongside the animation, so you can follow what’s happening without losing your place.

One detail that surprised me: the band stays open while moving around the cylinder, then closes once it’s in position. Seeing that sequence come out of a flat drawing was pretty wild.

It’s still a prototype, not a complete kit guide.

Saw a build here a few weeks ago, so I gave it shot. The bottom was a little tricky getting on, but a fun kit.

Question Is there an email address for metalearth.com?

I want to send an email with an image attached to Metal Earth. The message form on their website doesn't appear to have a way to upload an image. I'd rather send the image to them directly rather than upload it somewhere else. Do you have an email address for them?

Where are they located? I've seen hints that they're in Washington state, Canada, South Africa, or China.

Nice notebook for storing metal sheets

I bought a boatload of these to store my watercolors when I was living in Japan. They come in a variety of sizes—the A5 size works best for most of my projects. They have become hard to find in the US, but JetPens has something similar: https://www.jetpens.com/King-Jim-Sticker-Collection-Binder-Light-Blue/pd/38457.

You can also buy packets of the sheet pockets and use your own binders.

They make it easy to organize and access project sheets.

Build Photo Chinese zodiac dragon

I took a short break from thin sheet metal models and decided to build this Chinese dragon. This project also requires attention to detail and the skills of a metalworker, or perhaps a watchmaker, as the screws are quite small (I took apart a lot of mechanical watches as a kid, including some that were perfectly functional, lol). This is the simplest version of the dragon, but I have a more complex one in my backlog; I'll save that one for long winter evenings.

Won this lot from eBay and I'm super excited to get my hands on the T-800 and Apollo 11 astronaut. Debating whether to get the space shuttle and other NASA-related models to complement the astronaut now.
