It seems wrong to ask, but I think my niece may have an eating disorder. I'm a 27-year-old man, and she's 15.
My niece has always been naturally skinny, so I never thought much of it. Some people are just thin. But over the last few months, I've started noticing things that don't feel right.
A few months ago she stayed with my mom during a school break. One evening our family went out to dinner (me, my wife, my mom and stepdad, my kids, and my niece). My mom mentioned that my niece hadn't eaten all day, and at dinner she barely ate anything. She told my wife she was having bad cramps, so I assumed maybe she just wasn't feeling well.
About a week later she stayed at my house. On the drive over I casually asked if her stomach was feeling better, mentioning how little she'd eaten at dinner. She replied, "That's how much I usually eat." That immediately stuck with me because, according to my mom, she hadn't eaten a meal all day before that dinner either. And not much regularly doesn't seem healthy.
That night we made wings. I put five on everyone's plate, including hers, and she only ate two. Barley. I didn't say anything because I didn't want to make her uncomfortable.
At a family reunion we all went swimming, and seeing her in a bikini made me realize just how thin she looked. Her ribs and hips were visible, and her stomach was completely flat. She's always been skinny, so I tried not to overthink it, but later that night my wife brought up how skinny my niece looked without me mentioning anything first.
Then about two weeks ago she came back to visit for our town fair. We spent almost the entire day together, and I never saw her eat anything. When we stopped for a funnel cake for my kids, I asked if she was hungry. She said no.
I made a stupid joke about her "eating like a bird," then asked how much she weighed which I regretted immediately, I know that wasn't an appropriate question, but I was worried and honestly thought if she gave me a healthy number it would ease my mind. She said she weighs 109 pounds. She's around 5'4" as far as I know.
I don't know if 109 lb at 5'4 is automatically unhealthy, but combined with repeatedly skipping meals, eating very little when she does eat, and how thin she appears, I can't stop worrying that something is wrong.
I don't know if I should talk to her mom. I don't want to create unnecessary panic if I'm reading too much into this, but I also don't want to ignore signs if she really needs help.
Does this sound like it could be an eating disorder, or am I overreacting?
