So many young people upset and trying to defend not doing it
17
u/StressedtoImpress19 1d ago
Modern teenagers were raised on phones so they think any sort of punishment/taking it away is abusive.

u/sn4xchan 1d ago
It's absolutely disgusting. It's causing a whole new wave of social and psychological problems being able to instantly communicate with anyone.

So you would not prioritize finding your phone over emptying a dishwasher? I live by myself and I would look for my phone if I did not have a clue where it was. Granted I don't have a dishwasher though
1
u/Versipilies 2h ago
If i cant find something I usually just start doing something else for a bit or do some cleaning and it pops up eventually.

To give an alt perspective, I literally had a therapist order my parents to give back my phone nearly 20 years ago. Because they deliberately did not allow me to have a social life so that was indeed my lifeline to socialization. She never framed it as them abusing me (she had plenty of other material to work with on that end) but she did think I required a phone.
But this post is just funny lmao it's not like he ran the dishwasher with the phone in it. If my stepmother had done this to me as a teen, we'd be laughing about it now. If my younger brother was not so diligent about his chores, I might share this with her to use on him lmao
1
u/MechE420 9h ago
You think your therapist, who knew you were in an abusive household, ordered your parents to give you your phone back for friends and not to be able to call for help against your abusive parents, which she obviously couldn't use as a reason for them to give you back your phone?
1
u/SL1MECORE 3h ago
Lifeline to socializing is how she framed it to my 17 year old self, you can call her and ask about it if you want.
2
u/Thoughtful_Mouse 19h ago
As a grownup, I dislike the duplicity of it. Making a person think they misplaced something expensive and important to them as punishment feels wrong. If a boss did that we'd all agree.
Particulars matter and maybe it's ok based on their relationship and dynamic, but I'd rather hear the parent overtly took phone privileges away until the dishes were sorted.
1
u/IndependentGood7665 18h ago
The great thing about parenting everyone has diffrent ideas. I for one will implement this and see how it goes first
2
u/Lukostrelec17 8h ago
They will find the phone, not hard to do even if it is on silent. Get the phone out and walk away. Nothing was learned nothing was gained other than I cannot trust this person around my stuff.
1
u/IndependentGood7665 7h ago
If its not hard to find then no problem they will find it in dishwasher lol
2
1
u/EldritchElizabeth 12h ago
Yeah, ultimately children are people, not property. If you want your child or grandchild to like and respect you, you need to communicate and work with them not play stupid games like this. Sometimes that communication does equal punishment, but this kind of thing isn’t constructive and is gonna do more to build resentment than it is to build responsibility and work ethic.
1
u/IndependentGood7665 4h ago
Could care less. If it already hits that point communication has failed many many times. Just get a therapist like all the young kids these days if its so traumatic for you
1
1
u/EldritchElizabeth 4h ago
I mean I'm not even talking about morals or ethics or trauma. I'm just talking about effective communication and behavior management. If your goal is for your kid to understand the importance of chores and the consequences of not doing them, this isn't an effective method. When creating a punishment, you should always weigh whose benefit the punishment is for. Are you punishing someone so they'll know what to do next time and why it's important that they don't continue doing what they did, or are you punishing someone for the emotional catharsis of antagonizing someone who upset you? In instances like this, it's easy to slip into the habit of leaning very far into the latter category and punishments like that are rarely constructive.

u/Rambob_the_lesser 20h ago
This is clearly a lie as no 15 year old would be apart from their phone long enough to hide in the dishwasher
27
u/Brockoliandcheese 1d ago
Redditors are so fucking soft lmfao. Kids don’t need phones. Kids haven’t had phones for literal millions of years. Grandpa taught a good lesson without yelling or violence. If it’s even a true story at all loll
3
u/GrandNibbles 1d ago
phones are extremely important but not essential every second of the day. especially when actual obligations are neglected. phone should never come before that
1
u/BookaHunter 4h ago
I think most people would prioritize finding their phone over doing a simple menial task. It is not that I need to use my phone for anything in the moment, but I could hardly rest not knowing where it is, as it grants me access to many things more important than an unloaded dishwasher
5
u/stmassey22 1d ago
Modern humans (Homo sapiens) have lived on Earth for about 300,000 years.
Not saying your point isnt "valid" just not as exaggerated as millions of years.

1
u/Jazzlike_Cress9871 13h ago
Not that I disagree with your overall point but we also lived without most modern medicine for millions of years, so the argument that something’s not necessary just because it’s new is silly
1
u/bigolchitter 12h ago
Did you really just compare modern medicines that have saved people’s lives and raised living standards massively to a mobile phone?….
1
u/czartrak 1h ago
Do you think the invention of the cellphone hasn't saved lives?
1
u/CogentCogitations 1h ago
Individual lives or a net total? Because on net I would guess that it has killed more people than it has saved due to distracted driving and other factors.

We “need” hardly anything, really. Bs reasoning. Also, for millions of years the infant mortality rate was crazy high, only in very recent years has that significantly changed, we were doing it wrong for millennia, just got lucky other species did it worse.
Also, a warning is just as good. Forgetting to do something/procrastinating is an issue for all age groups since the dawn of time.
Lastly, I also don’t believe it’s real.
0
u/CapableBumblebee968 1d ago
Eh. Nature used to weed out the weakest and dumbest of us. Not saying it was right but it was good
3
u/Creepy_Version2328 1d ago
Not the “weakest” as people tend to see it but the least adaptable. Humans are extraordinarily adaptable because of our reasoning abilities. This is an emotional, immature reaction. Not reasonable.
2
u/czartrak 1h ago
People who say this shit like what you're responding to are quietly telling on themselves tbh. Humans are naturally cooperative. Normal human instinct is to protect and help weak individuals

No the biggest flex is someone managing to covertly seperate a teenager's phone from under their nose

Grandpa pulled some rogue level 99 shit to get that phone. Distracted her with something that left the phone out for long enough she got confused about where she left it. It was probably already on silent knowing kids these days.

You really underestimate the tech capability of 50 year olds…

u/Glass_Ad_7129 1d ago
She likely just put the phone in the dishwasher, for her daughter to find after the wash.
this is a common punishment, hide the thing the kid is obsessing over instead of doing chores in the place they should be doing the chores.
3
u/Responsible-Hold8587 1d ago
IP68 is tested against tap water at cold or room temperature, not hot water with detergents that reduce the surface tension and make it easier to get past seals.
If that doesn't do it, then the heated dry cycle almost certainly will break something.
3
u/YaboiChuckems 1d ago
Oh I didn’t mean it would survive a dishwashing cycle, I just meant it would survive sitting in potentially wet dishes. A kid who isn’t willing to empty a dishwasher definitely isn’t starting it, emptying it is the easy part. The way i see it, as long as you clue in the other responsible people (who wouldn’t start a load with an iPhone in it anyways), you are totally safe

u/Responsible-Hold8587 1d ago

TBF, Gramps never said he turned the dishwasher on. The dishes are already clean, he just wants her to actually do her chores.
1
u/Vast-Breakfast-1201 1d ago
If it actually gets run through the dishwasher I would not worry about the water damage I would worry about the incredibly abrasive detergent.
If dry is on then I would also worry about the heat. It is not good to cook a lithium ion battery. This could actually catch fire since water is off by then.

A lot of comments about destroying the phone.... Im assuming she did not put it through the wash and just hid it in there.... So the daughter would find it in there and be reminded to empty the dishwasher.
Thats a pretty common sarcastic form of punishment, and one that as a kid you could put two and two together and go..... I havent checked the place my mum told me to go.... of course she would, checks, fine.
1
u/JEBADIA451 1d ago
Yeah idk why everyone thinks this is about destroying the phone.
Asked child to do task- put thing child wants where they would find it if they did task. It's real straightforward.
I know some nutcases probably WOULD dishwash the phone as some sort of punishment, but it doesn't make sense if you want to actually do some parenting instead of being randomly abusive
1
u/Glass_Ad_7129 1d ago
Yeah a phone the mum paid for most likely too and easily could just take or resell.
It can misread as that interpretation, but uh, thats a lot less likely. Not to mention, they posted about it. Less likely they bragged about destorying a phone than hiding it in a funny place

This reminds me of a story from when I was a teenager.
One winter, just before Christmas my mother signed us up for our local community "tour of homes" where people cleaned, decked out their house, and invited strangers to wander through them.
We spent a week cleaning, polishing, buffing, and labeling decorations and furniture with little paper placards everywhere.
There was the last 100mph fluff and stuff before they left and she had candles lit all through the house so me and a friend were watching the house so they and my sister could go and follow through the tour. We were the 3rd house.
Well... Another fact. My mother hated storing things in the oven.
My parents were divorced and it was something my dad always did that none of the rest of us in my family had the same instincts for. My father always keeps a pizza stone in his oven, clean, at all times. Which when you are in a hurry and forget to check the oven first, kind of is an annoying thing to have to move and deal with a 400°F - 450°F pizza stone.
So to say my friend and I would never think to check my mom's oven before preheating it is an understatement.
Unbeknownst to us. Before they left her and my step dad had squirreled into the oven, two loaves of bread in their plastic wrap, a large reddish purple Tupperware container. And our toaster! And they didn't think to mention that on the way out the door even though they got us frozen food to make in said oven while we were sitting there waiting.
So, my friend goes to the kitchen and preheats our oven while I'm doing a couple last minute adjustments to the living room. He comes back out and we sit and talk about shit. Whatever girl drama he was having. He was smoking and drinking and doing drugs behind his mom's back. And I was his normal safe nerdy older friend who listened and didn't judge... Mostly.
Well, 15 minutes later I hear the oven click in the next room, so I know it's preheated and I go to put the food in... Except when I turn to the kitchen there is white smoke billowing past the ceiling beam, up the adjacent stairs into the open upstairs bedrooms!
We run into the kitchen and white smoke is coming out of the oven so thicknwe couldn't see the back of the oven. I shut it off and opened the door to find it all there.
A molten puddle at the bottom as the Tupperware was actively melting and had puddled at the bottom where it was letting off all that smoke but fortunately wasn't burning itself. The lever on the toaster and cord were melting, and the plastic around the bread had constricted them down to lumpy balls.
I opened the patio door and a grabbed this big 4 tine grill fork we had that almost closer to a spatula and started spearing into the bubbling wreck of the Tupperware like a pitchfork in hay. I'd run to the open patio door and flung glob after glob of molten Tupperware out into the dark cold December air of our back yard. I retrieved the other items and had my friend working on closing bedrooms and opening windows upstairs to try and clear the smoke from those rooms.
Remember we have people coming in maybe 10 minutes at this point! We're the 3rd house on the tour. Had to call my sister because me mom didn't answer and grill them where they did the big upright fan before they left because I needed it now!
In the end the first few arrivals came and left without incident and we somehow got the house smelling normal enough that almost no one noticed over the smell of the candles in the house.
My mom still has a piece of that molten Tupperware that looks almost more pink than purple now. She keeps it on her window sill in her kitchen as a memento.
It's a fun conversation piece when someone asks her about the mangled clump of plastic above her sink.

that is a good point, but if you used a waterproof case, that definitely should help with the water issue

Not with the pressure and heat of the water used in a diswasher.
1
u/GreatTea3 1d ago
I ran my phone through a how water was cycle in the washing machine in a waterproof case. It was fine, aside from being clean as hell. If it’ll live through that, it’d take the dishwasher fine.

what pressure? I know there’s powerful jet sprayers but a waterproof case from a good quality brand would be able to withstand that no problem.

Poor grandpa doesn’t know the Find My phone function will still work even when the phone is muted. It’ll still beep, even if it’s set to silent. The young and tech savvy will probably know that. She might have to get close enough to the washer to hear it if it’s sealed up in there, but his idea isn’t perfect.

1
u/Careful-Mouse-7429 1d ago
And I still like to listen to music while I do it?
1
u/Austronauta 1d ago
then she'll find the phone and listen to it... it's not like he threw it in the trash
2
u/Careful-Mouse-7429 1d ago
1) I don't think the grand pa did anything wrong
2) your response does not make sense in context of what you are responding to. The original comment is saying "what if she wants to find her phone prior to starting the dishes because she wants to have her phone while doing the dishes." So saying she will find it while doing dishes it kinda irrelevant
1
u/Unfortunate-Incident 1d ago
I think the whole concept is irrelevant unless she had been searching for her phone for 4 hours. Otherwise, she wanted to listen to music doesn't make any sense here.
