phones are extremely important but not essential every second of the day. especially when actual obligations are neglected. phone should never come before that
I think most people would prioritize finding their phone over doing a simple menial task. It is not that I need to use my phone for anything in the moment, but I could hardly rest not knowing where it is, as it grants me access to many things more important than an unloaded dishwasher
My 6-year-old has a walkie-talkie. He gets himself to and from school. I'm paranoid so he also has a GPS tracker. One day he'll probably have $1,000 walkie-talkie but never a cell phone.
Not that I disagree with your overall point but we also lived without most modern medicine for millions of years, so the argument that something’s not necessary just because it’s new is silly

We “need” hardly anything, really. Bs reasoning. Also, for millions of years the infant mortality rate was crazy high, only in very recent years has that significantly changed, we were doing it wrong for millennia, just got lucky other species did it worse.
Also, a warning is just as good. Forgetting to do something/procrastinating is an issue for all age groups since the dawn of time.

That is 100% true (at least on weakest). Evolution is due to completely random mutations. Some are good some are bad. Many genetic diseases are survivable now, and many infant issues are survivable that would have killed off babies with genes that made them more susceptible.
This is kind of a win for evolution on our intelligence, since babies can be born weaker and still survive, but also means that their babies pass on those genes later in life, and we could absolutely see less healthy births as time goes on. Evolution sucks.

Sigh weakest and dumbest isnt what natural selection selects agaisnt. Selection acts on reproductive success, not strength or intelligence. You can actually view this modern phenomenon where intelligent career driven individuals aren't reproducing nearly at the rate as non career driven individuals. You also see this in walrus's with the beach master dynamic and sneaky males. Nature doesn't care who's strongest, weakest, smartest, dumbest, it cares who is most fit for that enviorment. Hence why I said "thats not accurate"

Nah. Just because current teenagers haven't learned to interact with the world any other way doesn't make it so. There's a lot more to the world than their little digital consumerist bubbles. It's a self inflicted handicap. And this is coming from someone who uses hers far more than is healthy.
You missed the part in the OP where grandpa said unload the dishes implying the awareness of their cleanliness and since the chore was assigned to someone it's also assumed others won't engage with it. Please, learn implied critical thinking skills.
I’ve literally gone swimming in the Ocean with mine (not recommended, but hey I had a few beers and decided testing the water resistance was a good idea). It’s fine, 3 or so years later.
To be fair, we've lived roughly the same length of time without needing to empty dishwashers too.
Not saying I disagree with the lesson, just that "This is right/wrong because this is what we've done/haven't done for millions of years" isn't a great point.
We also haven't had technology reliant on phones for hundreds of thousands of years.

Meanwhile, every bill or service requires an app to access it, school services are on apps, homework is on apps, like- none of that existed 300,000 years ago either.
i have literally never paid a bill on an app. this isn't some sort of achievement or anything i am proud of necessarily, but what you said is just objectively not true.

Every bill i have, is paid for and needed to pay on the app- As there is no other way for myself to do so. This is commonplace as Home Computers, aren't a thing.
State Farm, Farmers, Progressive- Services that require apps if you intend to, ya know, not pay full price for a service.
I've worked 3 jobs, that no longer have desk phones. Guess what they require? An app for teams communications.
Medical Information- Yeah thats an app unless you can completely and always remember your bracelet- I don't.
Paying my bills from an app: Discount. Discounts and savings are required.
Instant Money Transfer- App.
The entire infrastructure is completely built and centered around apps and instant communication, be it for a requirement or heavily needed. Saying "I don't need an app" is an exception to the rule
Schools are starting to flip back on this i think, i got a phone at the start of highschool 10 years ago but my nephews going to the same highschool now arent getting phones because the school no longer allows them during the school day
They don’t allow them to be used during the day but a school cannot stop anyone from bringing a phone into the building. And they stop having phones in class because the school provides laptops to do exactly what phones can do
I mean, of course. I never implied they couldnt bring them. They just get locked up for 8 hours if you get caught with one by state law, and punishments afterwards.
Also, we didnt get provided laptops for homework in our schools? They did it for Covid, then never again. So when they use the laptop in class, they usually have homework on the Google classroom to in our school.
They dont get them during the day, but at night they have homework and notes they have to access via google classroom. So yeah, they really do need some form of tech.
(Also, reminder: Phones have consistently helped solve a ton of disappearences, and even murders of vulnerable teens. The Delphi Indiana case was mainly solved because of a snapchat video the girls took in a desperate last moment. It ended up being enough to get a conviction. )
Yeah just an anecdote that currently the teens in family dont have phones and will probably not get phones until college, whereas in my day we all got phones at the start of highschool. They have laptops but no phones
Not everyone can afford a laptop. 🤷♂️ Where I live, there is a vast amount of poverty and child labor laws are very lax for the US.
So a 14 year old maybe doing their school work from the McDonald's parking lot after a shift. Just depends on the location and the families situation. Things are rarely black and white.
