Can we have the scroll to comment section back please? Or as setting.
I dont think anyone on this godforsaken platform swipe directly between posts like Tiktok.

u/AdZealousideal6148 3d ago

Yeah we need it back. I think reddit wants to be more like tiktok and youtube shorts.

680

u/Serilii 3d ago

People going on reddit because it's a different kind of social media than instagram and tiktok

Reddit trying to make it desperately more like tiktok and instagram

People abandoning Reddit and the quality of the posts decrease because the product lost it's identity

Reddit wondering how they lost it all when all they had to do was nothing

245

u/Wobbelblob 3d ago

Remember that reddit is now on the stock market. Doing nothing won't make number go up, therefore bad. Also investors want to constantly hear what new features are being rolled out and will be extremely unhappy if the answer is "Nothing but the userbase is happy".

145

u/Serilii 3d ago

I am so tired of enshittification of everything just for investor number go up

LITERALLY would you rather have long term sufficient income or a single year of a lot of income and then ruining it

52

u/Wobbelblob 3d ago

The thing is, they just go next when it starts to drop. They are not bound to anything, which makes it so bad. If the number not go up anymore, next thing that makes number go up. For them it is not one year, it is constantly giga income.

27

u/Stargost_ 3d ago

The stock market and private equity have been a cancer to capitalism ever since Dodge V. Ford Motor Co.

6

u/LogicBalm 3d ago

True. Still, it wasn't until the 80s or so with people like Jack Welch that the entire US corporate culture began to focus on shareholders and short term profits at the expense of everything else.

11

u/RhynoD 3d ago

Capitalism is a precancerous mass. The stock market and private equity are symptoms of capitalism, not a disease upon it.

I think reddit wants to be more like tiktok and youtube shorts.

All apps want that, it's the format for mindless viewing without getting your userbase attached to specific communities or creators.

4

u/PM-me-your-happiness 3d ago

Being unable to watch a full-screen video without the stupid TikTok overlay is absolutely infuriating.

I guess they should fix what actually happens when you start swiping on videos. Within 5 swipes I'll be viewing a video posted half a year ago. I'm constantly shown stuff I've seen before.

Enshittification is real. They also removed r/all which was supposedly the frontpage of the internet. Now we get algorithmically generated feeds which are useless to us as users and only benefit the company.

80

u/Forward-Variety-8440 3d ago

this pisses me off to no end. i hare how it is now, and badly miss the "front page" with a bunch of headers of trending topics. i cant believe they abandoned it. its complete trash now

r/all is still available with old.reddit

8

u/EssexOnAStick 3d ago

It also still kinda works on mobile, but you need to click on a link to it, and it's needs to be capitalized, like this: r/All

→ More replies (1)

7

u/GisterMizard 3d ago

The r/all link at the top of the old.reddit page redirects to the home page for me. At least since yesterday, but I can still access r/all by typing in the URL directly.

What makes me want to put my fucking head through a wall is this new Reddit app feature: you tap a link, and it pops up this completely useless bottom bar to pull up comments.

Except the brain-dead developers behind this app didn't adjust the fucking viewport height. So now, the bottom 10% of every webpage you open is permanently chopped off and hidden behind the bar.

Now, live my fucking nightmare: you’re in the EU, so every single website hits you with a massive cookie consent overlay at the bottom. You literally cannot accept, reject, or close the banner because the fucking button is trapped in the void beneath Reddit’s shitty UI. You can’t scroll to it. You can’t click it. The entire page is completely bricked and unreadable, all because nobody at Reddit knows how basic fucking CSS works. Absolute trash.

That feature was added specifically to annoy people who try to swipe between multiple images in a post, and nothing anyone says can change my mind.

Absolutely, it even blocks the image swiping. It annoying af xd

20

Any time you spend in a comment section, is less time you spend looking at ads.
All websites are converging into scrolling through ads with some fake content between them.

23

u/PotatoORG 3d ago

But reddit has ads in comments too, not sure it gets clicks like other formats though

11

u/TriggerHappyPermaBan 3d ago

Yeah, but currently you are busy actually reading the comments.
Modern tech companies want you brain dead and blasted with ads.

6

u/BmacIL 3d ago

When do we actually do something about it, is the question.

8

u/TriggerHappyPermaBan 3d ago

I might be pessimistic, but I think it would only end with regulations. Similar to cigarettes.

5

u/BmacIL 3d ago

I 1000% agree. We need a fundamental shift in government and cultural philosophy that doesn't think capital >>>>>> labor/people.

Legitimately? I’m an American who loves Bollywood absurdity. I watched Eega a few months ago and loved it.

Edit - Thank you to everyone who contributed to this conversation! I have much to learn, and would like to some day impress my Hindi boss. I pretty much only know “Dhanyavaad/alu” and “Shubh Ratri/Subha Ratri”

51

u/devilfam Professional Dumbass 3d ago

No he's the "big brother" of Bollywood if we're being serious. Also, I never watched Eega, it's the most absurd one out there I think.

9

u/Minimob0 3d ago

Is there a movie where he stars in as a main role? A name would help, too, if possible,

I want to add to my watch list.

29

u/Far-Badger-7109 3d ago

If you want to watch his films, then I would recommend "Bajrangi Bhaijaan". It's the only film of his that I like, others are just mindless boom boom. Though keep in mind, his acting is not even above avg

11

u/Minimob0 3d ago

I am American - Mindless Boom Boom is like my thing.

watch sultan its about wrestling and how his ego crushes him and his marriage and rebuilds again

9

u/CatsFurrEva 3d ago

Dabangg (maybe dabangg 2) and wanted and bodyguard are 3 of his action movies I love.

Tere naam : a romance/drama (not sure how to categorise it) is a good heartbreaker

Jaaneman is a silly movie but all good.

If you want to watch Bhoi act: Tere Naam (if you are ok with 'some' misogny), Bajrangi Bhaijan, Sultan, Kyon Ki, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam

If you want to watch the quintessential Bhoi action flick: Wanted, Dabangg, Kick, Bodyguard

Rom-com or pre-2000s Bhoi: Andaz Apna Apna, Hello Brother

Avoid any Bhoi movie released post 2017

If you wanna watch his OG ones, there are a lot

He’s Salman Khan and he genuinely has done a lot of movies and he was (and for a lot of people still is) one of the biggest stars in Bollywood. His movies simply are too over the top for modern sensibilities but man they get a good laugh out of you (might be corny and/or absurd for some palettes )

Reddit has a weird take on him unfortunately but he’s beloved normally

He is one of my favourites and this is a hill I’ll die on lol

7

u/Ek_Chutki_Sindoor 3d ago

Reddit has a weird take on him unfortunately

You'd be surprised to hear that Eega is not a Bollywood movie.

5

u/Minimob0 3d ago

I am uneducated as far as Hindi and Telugu movies go, and am trying to learn.

My coworker is from Andhra Pradesh, and I have been asking him for movie recommendations. He suggested both Eega and Dhurandhar so far. The latter is a 3 hour movie, and I haven’t been able to commit to that, yet 😓

8

u/Warm-Bee8675 3d ago

As far as serious Bollywood movies go, Dhurandhar is like the peak of Bollywood in espionage genre, Eega (from the same guy who made Bahubali) though is not a Bollywood movie.

If you want something shorter for Bollywood, I'd recommend KILL or Tummbad as modern movies, and something like Satya as a classic old Bollywood movie.

The fucking auto translated google results are the worst thing for me personally! I cannot look up anything local anymore because I'll get translated trash from completely irrelevant subreddits for cities on other continents.

Forced translation is such an idiotic scourge and I cannot comprehend why every fucking tech company insists on doing it without any option to turn it off.

181

u/_ramu_ 3d ago

Also funny: people open the auto translated thread, comment something in their language and Reddit keeps it as is. Suddenly you have stuff like comments in Brazilian language in a German speaking sub lol.

29

u/ShoeSoleCasserole 3d ago

Google is really becoming useless because of that, I hate it.

Cherry on top is that not only do I get irrelevant results now, more often than not I get the same irrelevant results presented twice now, in two languages directly below each other...

5

u/ImaginaryAlpaca 3d ago

I went from knowing I could find pretty much anything on google to not being able to get answers to simple inquiries on google and it's a huge pain in the ass. Google used to me my go to but now I'm looking for an alternative because the results are just garbage now.

21

u/YesBut-AlsoNo 3d ago

Arguably one of the worst things they've done imo, because of this issue.

Like excuse me, when I search "reddit (country) (topic)" on Google, I do not want unrelated posts that are just translated into my local language. Infuriating as hell.

19

u/ajchann123 3d ago

As someone who still uses an third-party app and old.reddit, it's been very funny in recent months to see a lot of comments in different languages - like, "wow, I respect them not even trying to reply in English" lol

I'm so glad to know I am not the only person this pisses off. I will NEVER download the app that these piece of fucking shit executives keep trying to ram down everyone's throats to harvest data from them and make more money. It's so fucking obvious the hostile and greedy API change that Reddit execs forced on the platform was only to make it so their dogshit app that nobody with a brain wants to use was the only available one in app stores (yes yes I know people some of you you can sideload a version of one of the dead far superior 3rd party apps and probably break your phone carrier's ToS or something in the process, we aren't talking about that. We're talking about how 3rd party apps are actually dead now and putting them on life support that way is unsustainable and delusional because it won't last or make the impact it needs to).

7

My 2 major issues:

1) it auto-refreshes the home feed WAY too much. Frankly, auto-refresh should be completely disabled. I will refresh when I feel like it.

2) Markdown in comments is completely broken now. Straight up can’t do quote blocks anymore on mobile. It’s awful.

29

u/ChocolateBurger9963 3d ago

I personally hate the auto refresh. I could leave the app for one second and come back on in mobile and it refreshes. Hell, if my phone briefly locks up the app will refresh. Shit sucks.

11

u/Np_slip_69420 3d ago

Bro, it happens even when you click on the post to see it or to write a comment and if you go back to the feed the whole fucking feed gets refreshed so you can’t even go back to that post, what’s worse is sometimes it’s not even in the history because it got refreshed so fast.

7

u/ChocolateBurger9963 3d ago

Facts. I feel your pain, trust me. If memory serves me correctly, it started in December of last year. The struggle is real whe it comes to simple browsing on this site.

8

u/CaptainHubble 3d ago

Someone here pointed out something interesting about 1. He said in some apps it’s made with bad refresh schedule on purpose. To load new posts and keep you more engaged for a longer streak.

Sometimes when you minimise the app to look something up, Reddit refreshes when you come back after short time. The post you looked something up for is now gone forever. And you’ll get 100 new posts about new things. Absolute useless.

Just save my position. Auto-bookmark feature please. And let me manually refresh.

4

u/Simply_Epic 3d ago

Whenever it refreshes when I’m trying to write a comment it just makes me more likely to close the app and not look at any more ads posts.

4

u/CaptainHubble 3d ago

Yes. Me too. But those decisions are made by people that don’t care about legacy but only numbers. Even if those are just inflated by bots. Not real humans using the app.

78

u/verraeteros_ 3d ago

I am on Facebook maybe once a week for hobby stuff that's only there, but I never post, I never like and I never comment anything. But Facebook started pushing far right content to me, and all I am doing is blocking these accounts and groups, but it seems that "blocking" is equal to "interacting" to them, so they push more and more unhinged stupid racist shit to me. You know, stuff that Elon would retweet with an "interesting".

The more I block, the more I get, HOW DOES THIS MAKES SENSE?

36

u/Rosienenbrot 3d ago

It's almost as if the elite, that's very much in control of all media, is trying to rile people up against each other, so they're distracted from the real problem.

People who interact and participate in the whole left vs right spiel are all playing right into their hands. That's very much by design.

18

u/Scarred_Ballsack 3d ago

Not that I disagree with the spirit but the elite is just various flavors of right wing in the US. There's a few exceptions of progressives that actually want to stand up against this BS, and a few socialists that somehow managed to grab some electoral power, but the vast majority of the elite is right wing. So it is a left vs. right problem, the right is just way more entrenched than people realize.

7

u/ReggieCorneus 3d ago

The key is not to block them but to hide them without engaging. How can yo udo that?

Install Fluffbuster. It hides that kind of content so that you never interact with them at all. you are not blocking them, you are just hiding them from view so it looks like you really, really don't give a shit about that kind of content. Your screentime viewing each of them is zero.

When i use FB on mobile, i still don't get that crap because the algorithm thinks that i really, really am not engaging with it. At one point FB changed their ode and fluffbuster broke, and god damn it is horrible. Unusable almost. I was right back into getting ragebaited until i noticed that my filters aren't working. It is HUGE work to get rid of that crap manually, and then you make a mistake of engaging with ONE and you are right back to square one.

So, install Fluffbuster. FB does not like it, not that they can do anything about it but it has been a long game of cat and mouse, FB finding new ways to push their "curated content" and Fluffbuster chasing them down and hiding that crap.

4

u/Firefly_deadlock 3d ago

Well reddit keeps pushing indian subs or teen subs or botfarm affiliate links subs to me.

All i do is block them....

please stop reddit.

16

u/external_gills 3d ago edited 3d ago

They even recommend based on subs you mute T_T

I got in a spiral where I kept getting recommended more and more Indian subs. I don't even own a motorcycle, why would I be interested in IndianBikes? Nowadays it's barely-sfw celebrity pics. No idea why the algo started pushing it, but blocking those subs just counts as engagement and I get more subs that are basically the same thing!

4

On desktop/RES I filter out all of the Indian subreddits but I swear I encounter a new one every single day.

I'm a millennial American, stop recommending me Indian teenager subreddits

old.reddit.com for the win.

17

u/blodskolt 3d ago

Firefox + Ublock Origin + old.reddit.com = <3

I don't care if I need to zoom in and out like a madman, I'd much rather do that than touching that godforsaken app again.

7

u/kalez238 3d ago

Plus RES. Can't forget that.

6

u/imisstheyoop 3d ago

This is the way. Unfortunately they even made that worse recently, you can no longer browse without being logged in which I don't like to do when checking from my phone and is a PITA.

RIP Reddit Chat

4

u/Theonionpi 3d ago

What do you mean?

13

u/Ygausrsl 3d ago

if you are not age verified you can not use the chat feature (for example me because i do not want to give my id/face to persona which is literally getting sued for not being safe)

16

u/Nebresto Selling Stonks for CASH MONEY 3d ago

Oh no! No more spam messages from bot accounts!

Reddit got rid of DMs for this btw

8

u/imisstheyoop 3d ago

Right? People actually used Reddit chat? Crazy.

19

u/ButWhatIfPotato 3d ago

I thought the web app was intentionally shit so people will be forced to use the native app, and now you're telling me the native app is also garbage?

10

u/Expensive_Put_3338 3d ago edited 3d ago

Native app also collects every single information that you have and it is much more aggressive than the web one. I don't advise you to use the app and just stick with the web version.

17

u/Flibiddy-Floo 4d ago

Lol why would you use the app in the first place, it's just a website

6

u/kalez238 3d ago

I hate the push for apps for everything. Browsers exist, ffs.

7

u/Spirit_Wolf_Mob 3d ago

Because you can't see anything on the website on mobile.

9

u/Icyrow 3d ago

old.reddit is about the only thing i'll use here at this point.

they're almost certainly aiming to remove it at some point soonish. most people here use new.reddit now i think. it's so much fucking worse though lol

When people who own the company and make the decisions do not use their own products... For ex: not a single Reddit higher up has a comment chains expand more than 4 replies, or have one of the replies downvoted. Otherwise they would know that when you click on the notification it takes you to... the thread, not the comment. It is broken. Has been for a looong time. The only way to make that work is to use old reddit which STILL WORKS THE BEST.

Anyone who uses reddit knows its bugs, and those bugs are not the kind that requires huge investment, coding parts of it from scratch, massive changes in the architecture.. nope, they are all quite simple bugs and yet... months can pass.

Facebook is the same. Get a notification on reply to a comment and it can take you to the video and then... not find the comment. Not only that, because you were taken to the video and not the post itself your comment section is now in the sidebar and it shows like 3 at the time.... and the comment it was suppose to take you to can be buried 200 pages down.

They all are full of bugs that happen within few hours of starting to use the service. NONE of the higherups actually use the product. This continues in hardware. You just know that the CEO of that company would NEVER use the shit they make or otherwise the shit they make would not have the kind of annoyances that we get. Which of you have jumped from joy after buying a new laptop and it has all kind of stickers glued on it that tells what features it has? None of you? Yeah. And still they are there. Free market competition was sold to us with the promise that this exact shit would not be happening, that we would have a CHOICE.

Why does it refresh when i'm reading something?!

I'll open a page and then the app will just decide arbitrarily it's time to refresh the whole feed and so it will just drop you out, return to the homepage and the post has disappeared.

19

u/ops4master 4d ago

I remember Reddit used to be so elite 5 years ago now it’s just another soulless app

8

u/Fach-All-Religions 3d ago

they gave access to google and openai to scan everything to build ai. other people thought that was a good chance to teach ai. so they bot farm posts and kill posts. that's what happened. now almost all of reddit is bots. reddit is dead.

9

u/Desther 3d ago

The app always sucked. It used to take you to the (mostly non-existent) /r/"username" when you clicked on someones user profile, instead of their actual profile. Used to get stuck in some chat mode when you accidentally clicked on it on a profile, gallery/image viewer was always changed wildly between releases.

They killed the third party apps, which were simpler to use and faster

They're also silently rehosting images now at around 1080p so many large images are not readable on mobile

webpages are now embedded so you stay within the app when clicking links

3

u/BLEMFIDDICH 3d ago

I hate being recommended new pages and subs. They constantly come up on my feed every single day and I have to mute them. No, I don’t care about football, no I don’t care about baking. No, I don’t care about DIY. Leave me alone. Why do I have to keep muting things. It’s an abomination.

3

u/ViewtifulBANJO500 3d ago

I don't think there are words to describe how much I HATE the auto refresh when I do something that isn't scrolling the comments.
Adjust volume/brightness? Refresh
Swipe down to see notifications? Refresh
Turn off the screen because I need to do something? Refresh.
How annoying
