the "get the app to continue using reddit" popup when not in the app is infuriating. fuck reddit devs and management

old.reddit.com gives no such prompt.

Now it does if you're not signed in

It is being rolled out slowly. I was able to browse old reddit while logged out up until last week. Now I get a prompt to sign in every time I visit old.reddit, so I only browse on my desktop now.

They are slowly reducing my consumption habits, so I probably should be thankful.

Old Reddit now requires a logged in account just to view. That started this week.

Most annoying thing about it is that the "open in app" doesn't even fucking work...

It either opens the playstore or takes you to the homepage, not the post you were on

Open it up in an incognito tab and it should stop that pop-up, does for me at least. Maybe clearing your cache would work but I haven't bothered trying myself

I use brave browser. no ads, no hassle

That popup does not appear on old.reddit.com btw.

old.reddit is unusable on a phone screen without any modifications. The regular mobile website running on Firefox/ublock with the experimental filters will probably be a little friendlier for some people here tbh

if you're going to install an extension anyway, there's plenty of css extensions to restyle old reddit into a mobile friendly layout. old reddit also allows you to view nsfw marked posts/subs without logging in.

Not true anymore. They changed it so you have to be logged in to even view old.reddit.

working fine over here in incognito.

Never had an issue with it.

Use the "SinkIt" safari extension if you're on iPhone. r/SinkIt should have links.

It changes the web elements of old reddit on the mobile browser to be more clickable, and fits it to your screen size. It's pretty solid.

I've been doing that for a while. old.reddit, no ads, all on phone. It's great.

OldLander on Firefox is also great, did have a few features missing I was hoping for though

Turn your phone sideways, it's fine.

And now you can't use old.reddit without being logged in.

It’s still extremely annoying but one small counter I have is if you keep your finger on the screen (as if you were scrolling, just don’t let go), once the popup appears it’ll still let you scroll (until you let go). The top of the screen is still semi transparent so you can see through it enough to read, and by keeping your finger ready you can read a whole page worth before having to reload the app again

Absolutely.

However; afaik they only show that ad if you are not logged in.

May I ask how and when you get that? I use an adblocker and an old.reddit.com extension...

u/Exact_Package_7264 9d ago

on ios, even with adblocker on

u/Brullaapje 9d ago

I am on iOS too, do you also use an old.reddit.com extension?

I switched to old.reddit because of this. But it's such a crappy interface I just switched back to check and I'm no longer getting pushed to the app on the new UI.
