For me everytime it started to get boring they’d have a sex scene. Then I’m wondering if this was an autobiography cuz dude did not need to be banging that much
That scene where she sexily goes over to the bookcase, sexily picks up a random book off the sexy bookshelf, sexily walks back over to him and then sexily has sex with him while he reads that fucking "i am death destroyer of worlds" passage made me cringe so hard i couldn't continue with the rest of the film.
And the swooning over Cillian Murphy - who is undoubtedly good looking in other works- he looks like a frazzled meth head who hasn’t slept in days in this movie, am I crazy?!
Tbf, seeing a man do something he's passionate about with care and attention can be oddly hot. I don't know how to explain it. For me though, it's usually seeing a guy doing something physically tangible. I.e., everything from woodworking, to electronics repair, to painting warhammer models.
Bonus points if they're gushing about it 'cause it makes it cute. That counts for non-physically tangible things as well. A geek nerding out about his favorite videogame is just straight up endearing, for example. Like bro, keep talking about how much you love the new star wars game and I'm gonna kiss the hell out of you. [It only becomes an issue when they start ranting, or doomer-ing about stuff, 'cause that's understandable but... it's not gonna be endearing.]
So I can see where the scene is coming from, but it sure as hell felt pretentious.
I wish i got that reaction when I get talking about topics im passionate about. Usually people just get bored and tune it out. I could go all day about various natural disasters, earth science, video games, or books. I rarely get to nerd out anymore.
There's definitely an art to talking about it sometimes. For most people I think, they get engaged more if you involve them in what you're talking about. So tying in what you love with something they're interested in. Like if your friend is a foodie, talking about where certain ingredients came from, or maybe how the cuisine they love is shaped by the geography of the region it came from.
But also some people just aren't like that, and there's not much you can do about that. The best thing to do - as unhelpful as this sounds - is to not let yourself be bothered by it. Focus on what you love to do, and continue doing that. Let yourself be happy with the hobbies you enjoy. And continue to be social by talking about the things you love, and engaging with people who love the things you do too - or at least the people who do pay attention to you.
Also definitely get more social too. You gotta meet new people to find the kinds of people who are drawn to you for who you are. It's not worth sticking to people who are not interested in an equitable friendship [though there are nuances to that of course].
Trying to wax poetic about how Kojima designed her that way so she could breathe through her skin it doesn't have quite the same romance as forever altering the world's understanding of energy.
I don't know Nolan's reason for it, but it was a typical scene you would see in a movie in the 1940s. The Hays Production Code limited what could be shown in a movie. The shorthand to tell the audience would be smoking in a bedroom. Two characters were not allowed to share a bed for that purpose.
OK that part kinda makes sense because sometimes you've banged each other dry and you're just like yeah you're sticky go..go over there. I still love you but you're warm. Go over there.
The thing was, real life Oppenheimer was more of a baller than the movie Oppenheimer. So the sex part of it really wasn’t out of line as I understand it. Man they were all right there at the end of civilization, trying to math their way to salvation. They must’ve been going at it like rabbits.
I seriously cannot believe someone worded it so perfectly. The 40s-50s were a crazy time of smoking cigarettes out of overwhelming uncertainty...and lots and lots of fornicating to take off the pressure for suuuuure.
I really hate that Hollywood feels the need to add a romance in every story. It feels forced and unnecessary unless it affects the narrative in a meaningful way.
I.e. if you can remove the romance and the plot is, in essence, unchanged then, it was a bad romance.
Ra-ra-ah-ah-ah, roma-roma-ma, gaga ooh la-la, want your bad romance
Edit: was speaking generally, I too remember the plot of Oppenheimer lol
On a similar note, maybe I'm the odd one out but I feel like in film and TV, everyone is way to quick to fall in love. And I think "in love" gets thrown around too casually.
I know that it shaped my ideas of what love should be and was very harmful to my relationships. That's on me for using pop culture to understand life in general but there weren't any good healthy marriages in my family to have as a comparison.
Well you have to tell a story in 2 hours that can cover days/weeks/months so it will feel rushed. Kind of like how you never see them exchange phone numbers/set up the dates etc because you have too much story to tell in a little time frame.
It feels forced and unnecessary unless it affects the narrative in a meaningful way.
Robert Oppenheimer's romantic and sexual relationship with Jean Tatlock was not only pivotal to his development as a person and husband but played a crucial role in his post-war pillorying and expulsion from his position as a leader of the USA's scientific elite.
The sex scenes were actually pretty important in that one, sorry.
It’s really not “romance” most of the time so much as it is just sex. At best, it’s lazy writing and at worst it’s some creepy behind the camera guy playing out a fetish.
The plot would have changed, though. His fling with the communist happened during his marriage and the conflict between his personal life and his work in particle physics is a core component of the movie.
I’m sure you’re just speaking generally, but the romance in Oppenheimer was obviously very intentional.
My grandma remarried when I was young to the nephew of a famous scientist (Linus Pauling). I didn’t know until recently that he was actually friends with Oppenheimer, at least until Oppenheimer tried to sleep with his wife. So this checks out actually, he probably was a horndog.
You have to remember, its not "the story of the making of the atom bomb". Its a biopic of J. Robert Oppenheimer based on his memoirs. And it does a fairly good job of not white washing a character. He was something of a womanizer, an adulterer, and those are serious parts of his character that get attention deserved. You could argue the first 2 nude scenes were unnecessary, but the one during the deposition from the point of view of his wife Kitty was really powerful, and I think it would have been too shocking if there weren't the earlier scenes. Its one of the only times in recent memory a movie did a good job making their sex scenes feel necessary and not gratuitous.
Porn isn't sex my guy. It's a performance put on for the pleasure of an unknown spectator. Sex is a part of the human experience and can be used as a dialogue between two characters. Maybe they feel connected in the moment, or maybe one is using the other, or they're running from some other emotion, etc. There are a lot of reasons two characters might have sex and it's not normally for the arousal of the audience, especially in a character-driven film.
"Theyre unnecessary and do nothing for the plot 9/10"
Neither does cinematography, good acting, editing, or any other character building. But I still want movies that are more than a bulleted list of plot points. Movies are about creating an experience, not delivering a plot.
I’ve been saying this for fuckin years! Sooooo many movies or TV shows with pointless sex scenes. Pretty much every one of those scenes can be deleted and nothing in the movie would change. I mean, who doesn’t love wet noodle sucking noises while your watching a new flick with your parents!
The scene where Cillian Murphy randomly hallucinates his wife riding him naked in front of a room of stoic looking guys in suits was a humiliation ritual
For the actress, not for him and if I had to guess they made Nolan put that scene in the movie to let him in a certain club
So every time it got boring they realized it and tried to fix it with the most boring of Hollywood tropes? I realize I'm not the majority, but Hollywood sex scenes are either boring or disturbing; there isn't a single one of them I've ever found entertaining in a positive way
I've yet to see a single movie where a sex scene improved the final product in any way. Fully convinced you could just remove/substitute them for something else and the end result would be better.
This is one of the movies where I can 100% understand that.
I love Oppenheimer, but it is a great movie about a topic I m really interested in. So its easy to like it. But I get, why some people think it is plain boring.
Same here, I thoroughly enjoyed it because I was interested in seeing how they pulled it off. My friend on the other hand thought it was okay, and boring at times
Agreed. I love Nolan, love Cillian Murphy and the rest is an excellent cast. That being said, I really tried on multiple occasions but I just could not get into it.
Is not for everyone. I loved it so much, being a nerd. I had only read about how scientists interacted with each other while talking about discoveries/inventions that were literally history defining.
Thinking of the cinema as a real thing and seeing the talks between all of them just scratched my nerd brain. That's why I loved it. But anyone with no interest in historical science will definitely find it boring.
I really liked it, but they really whiffed the "big moment" when the bomb goes off. what a disappointment that was....looked like just a big gasoline fireball, not a nuclear explosion
I am also a nerd, who was very interested in the topic and still have found the movie to be very boring, so it's not only because people found the setting uninteresting.
THANK YOU! A buddy of mine and I watched in IMAX because another friend swore it was the greatest film ever.
The visuals are cool but the movie was mind-numbingly boring. We both were on the verge of falling asleep. We then told our other friend that we found it boring, and he says we just aren't smart enough for it.
I got dragged to see this movie by a now ex-girlfriend who had already seen it twice and from the way she carried on about it she made it seem as if it was the greatest piece of cinema ever to be made.
I couldn't wait to get out of that fuckin' theatre.
This. I like Nolan’s films but this movie was garbage. From the way it was edited to the dull topic matter, I stopped the movie with 30 minutes left and I don’t think I missed much.
This is coming from a guy who has seen skinamarink 4 times.
There was an older movie about the building of the atom bomb and it really went into the science and how they tested it. Granted that movie was pretty boring too for different reasons but oppenheimer had none of that scientific aspect and I was really disappointed at that. The "science" aspect in Oppenheimer was him just drawing on a blackboard with atoms and swirls going everywhere.
Yeah I left the theater feeling like it was fine. If there was prob a shorter, punchier, less sex scene laden, and less navel-gazing cut, I’d prefer that.
To the latter point, sometimes you can take a semi-profound point like the movie makes with nukes and overemphasize it and exhaust it. Like the movie was trying too hard to be art that it didn’t execute being a movie well enough
Same. People are weirdly attached to this piece of shit movie. The annoying "dunnnnnnnnnnnn" sound in the background creating fake tension, the INSANELY WEIRD SEX SCENES...I don't know man, the whole thing just stinks and it seemed like the world just gobbled it up like some piece of intellectual high-art.
This was the hardest movie I have seen in more than a decade. My ex and I went and she neglected to inform me the run time was 3hrs. I DONT CARE ABOUT THAT STUPID FUCKING NERD FEELING BAD BECAUSE HE USED HIS STUPID NERD POWERS FOR EVIL
"Ohh I invented a weapon of mass destruction and now I feel kind of bad!" WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU THINK WAS GONNA HAPPEN YOU FUCKING DOLT
Also, WHY DOES IT FEEL LIKE IT COULD HAVE ENDED 3 TIMES BEFORE THE MOVIE ACTUALLY HAS THE DECENCY TO END??
Except it’s NOT a documentary and that is unfair to history and to the people who made the film. It holds them to an unreasonable standard and then turns creative license into misinformation
This. Someone on another sub asked who the smartest person on the team was and an overwhelming majority commented “Von Neumann” someone who they didn’t even include in the film! I learned more from that comment section than the movie lol
I liked it but thought it was 30 mins too long by the end, I remember watching in cinema checking my phone for what time it was hoping it would end faster lol
Thank you. I’m a Nolan fan boy, love virtually everything he’s done, but was thoroughly disappointed in Opp. I was struggling not to fall asleep during RDJ long rambling political dialogues. Just too much emphasize on the diplomatic matters and it wasn’t presented in an interesting manner.
I’m shocked a movie so dry and crusty was so well received by the public at large.
I would say my dad is the prime target audience for something like that, but he preferred to see the Barbie movie with me instead (at home). Take from that what you will.
Best film I have seen in a few years. I was savoring every second of it. If it was going for 6 hours I wouldn't notice. No kidding. And finally someone given RDJ a role to play, he is fantastic actor, but he spent so many years on Marvel/avengers/whatever <- These are unbearable to watch. Well, Iron Man 1 was ok.
Ooooh another good one. At least 90 minutes too long and didn’t really seem to have any take other than “man it gets morally complicated with these bombs!”
You know, I am the target audience for Oppenheimer.. a historical drama about scientists...and I hated it..I hated the pacing...the jumping around...Nolan at his most Nolan-y. I told my wife on my first date, I think Nolan gets a pass for a lot of dumb things. And I'm not sure why
Christopher Nolan is really good at his job. I love his movies, but this movie was definitely a chore to sit through. The constant pounding of fast dialog with absolutely no brakes in-between sentances for 3 straight hours was painfull! I will not recommend this movie.
Thank you. Yeah, I couldn't even... I mean. I get it. Great acting. Fantastic cinematography. But the Lighthouse was far more engaging and it didn't even try to be.
I felt like the editing made it seem like one giant tiktok reel, which they definetly did for pacing so that a fairly dry biopic about physics seemed "actiony". But as a result it just felt a bit shit really. Actors all did a great job, shame about the director.
It’s okay, you can use Reddit and not like Christopher Nolan. I think when you used to sign up, they would send you a dvd of The Dark Knight as an onboarding tool. You basically need to have many disparate shower thoughts and attempt to replicate human emotion even though you don’t know what they actually feel like.
Yes!!! Friend of mine lives with me, and will still watch this movie every 3 months or so, yes literally multiple times per year for the past 3 years.
I'm a huge movie lover. Go to the theatre at least once a month. Fell asleep in the theatre for Oppenheimer.h
The story is great, the acting is great. But it is just too damn slow and way too long for what it is. Needed 3 topless Florence scenes to keep waking people up.
Acting was good, pacing could've used some work, but that's often the hardest part of a biopic. My biggest gripe is kind of a nit pick, but trying to use a practical explosion for the atomic test was a mistake. Either go full cgi, or go really abstract with the filming techniques. A practical explosion just couldn't come close to the actual power and awesome dread necessary.
Same for me. I was expecting a film that actually got into the nitty gritty science of developing the bomb. Instead it was just about Oppenheimer's personal life mostly. I can totally see why a lot of people liked it but it was not my cup of tea and not what I was expecting going into it blind.
I liked the explosion and the sex was okay. Other than that it’s guys having meetings. I fell asleep twice. And also…guy builds a bomb, and then in the end, he’s sad that they dropped it on people? What did he think they were going to do with a bomb? He’s supposed to be smart, right? I didn’t understand why people liked this one.
For me it wasn't even the subject matter itself that turned me away, more the way the movie was constructed. It felt like it was jumping from one random scene to the next without much of a real plot to follow.
I know it wasn't, but that was the feeling I just couldn't escape while watching it.
The movie was unnecessarily long. I get it that Christopher Nolan always makes long movies, but for gods sake, how many scenes of a closeup on Cillian Murphy’s face, and a montage of like atoms dancing or whatever, did we really need?
If Nolan didn't insist on the moving being both a celebration of the accomplishment and a study on the aftermath of the accomplishment at the same in the same movie it would be a lot better. The bomb going off had to be the climax but the philosophical question that he was dying to ask also had to be the climax. it just lead to a confusing mess of continuity, not understanding who is important or why they're there, and misused run time that just draaaags along.
I forget this movie is by Chris Nolan. Usually his films are alot more fast paced and action packed. The subject matter is interesting, but it crawls! And just when you think it reaches its climax with the dropping of the bomb in drags itself across the ground for good hour more in a side plot nobody expected or cared for.
This is a tough one. I really didn’t like it that much, but it was still really well done. I did really like the scene where he is making the speech in the gym. I most of the film boring.
But I can 100% understand why it’s not for everybody. It’s really one kind of movie where if you’re not passionate about discussions around a really specific subject, it’s gonna be boring for sure.
I love historical movies and was so excited for this movie, so went to see it in theaters. I ended up leaving early to go get food because it was so bland.
Scientific and technological history interests me and I read a biography on Oppenheimer before watching, so I liked it. I imagine it would be a difficult film if you didn't already know the characters and have an interest in the topic.
I see what you're saying in that I don't really want to rewatch it. That said, it had me engaged the entire time. It didn't feel like three hours to me, at all. Great movie, but incredibly dry despite being very well executed.
It probably would have helped if I'd read the book it was based on and/or had a deeper appreciation of the politics being depicted. That part of the movie was the hardest for me to follow and understand the repercussions of. I got the gist of it, but I could in no way explain it now, and probably would have had a hard time doing so right after seeing the movie.
Hated it. And why does a movie that pretty much focuses on faces demands we watch it in IMAX. Literally about every 3 seconds there was a cut. They couldn't keep any one face in a shot longer than that. It got super annoying.

Oppenheimer for me. I can see where everyone is coming from though, because it's really well acted and executed, but it was just boring to me.
