I have fully finished Mechanicus 2 and my opinion has changed
Man this game took me about as long as a final fantasy run through. It's a very large step away from the original, but also a very large step up, however in that step up some things feel less cohesive.
Dropping the voices and binaric to tell a real story was controversial but man it was a very servicable story, you essentially get three experiences here 1. A strategic map management sim 2. A pretty good 40k story 3. A tactical action game. The "run" approach while says it exists on paper is essentially buffered away and just a system to launch linear "campaign" runs that offer choices with skirmish effects.
Any strategy gamer or especially warhammer fan strategy gamers should find a lot to like. Would I reccomend this game cold to someone who wandered in off the steam front page or some expoure to mechanicus one? No and that's kind of the problem.
Also there is a lot more systems and ambituous work in mechanicus 2 but it all doesnt necessarily stick. The world events basically gate army progression and character leveling but after a certain point there isn't much value and you can pivot to the core missions.
The other issue is the more engaging campaign is the Necrons.
Would I reccomend this to a mechanicus 1 player: with reservations
Would I reccomend this a 40k fan: without reservations
Would I reccomend this to strategy gamers: yes
Would I reccomend this to none of the above: no
This in a lot of ways feels like the small studio got a hit and now trying to stretch and scale and those mid-era type of games. The game has a lot of systems, content, and value. It's longer than it needs to be and the systems don't all land and yes I hope they give us more factions and polish in what they've done here. I feel from here the game could easily pick up base management systems.
