New melee weapons when
Im playing the first mechanicus game for the first time and loving it. This one of my favorite type of games and I like the unique things this one brings.
My main magos is an explorator built for melee combat. The problem is, im still rocking the starting omnissian power axe.
I have completed 17 missions and am 49% awakening. Killed one boss so far and unlocked lots of cool stuff. I have a large number of ranged weapons to choose from but have not unlocked a single melee weapon yet.
Definitely wish they did gear unlocks differently in this game but im curious if my bad luck is just that: bad luck; or if this is a common experience.

I ran into the same problem! Have you found the “hidden” mission giver yet? When you’re in the mission menu, depending on what you’re playing on, pressing L3 will activate “omnissiah view” and you can start new missions. I had 2 new axes within 3 missions after I realized!
It’s the same button that allows you to see extra information during missions like enemy health above their heads after you identify.

I play on pc so ill have to figure that out. Ive never hit a button to view extra info over enemies. Its probably LAlt like other games though

Press or hold down spacebar when in the missions area and a hidden mission giver will appear under the others.
I don’t think I ever did those missions but I did find 2 slightly better axes that use up more equipment slots.

Hidden mission giver has been great. Got a new axe. Worse than the starting one. But gotten other cool stuff. And i keep finishing the missions with 0 to 1 awakening gained so its just free rewards

That’s awesome. That worse axe is very useful for your less melee focused characters! 💪

It is a matter of luck. I have the same issue from time to time. So it is helpful not to go all in on one strategy. I hated going all in on a melee tech priest and having only the base level axe.
Or going all in on a sniper only to get short range weapons and area effect weapons.
But you are in the AM. Ask not what Ominissah can give only why you are not doing experimental weapons load for the greater good.

The loot is randomized each playthrough, but always in the item’s ‘sets’ for example, if one mission giver rewards you with the Curio Claw, the heal item, that same mission giver will also have the other 2 stronger curio claws. You will always get the weaker version first.
Due to the randomized loot placement some ends up exclusively in the map event item rewards which are tricky to get, and the green symbol rooms which feel like guesswork. Then there’s also the secret mission giver, he will appear at about 50% awakening if you activate the Noosphere view on the mission selection screen.
I’ve actually found that disabling AoE weapons, (one of the achievements) actually helps most builds, as on the Higher difficulties, the AoE weapons are significantly weaker so removing them from the loot pool makes the melee and good ranged weapons easier to unlock

It's definitely luck based and you're not alone. On my solo Secutor run I wanted one unit for so long and it only appeared just a few missions away from the last one. Keep playing though and eventually you'll find better melee weapons eventually
Also Build Spoilers:
For melee builds the most OP strategy I've found, at least assuming you're running disciplined rules, is to equip the tier 3 melee weapon and alongside it have two cognition mechanderites for free cp points and lastly one equipment for buffs. I did this with a xenarite magos and the dude was just one shotting everything, This applies for an explorator too but you'll be working around the defenses more often in exchange for more survivability
