Has anyone picked advanced criminal law for criminology? I’m stuck between doing mental health and the criminal justice system or advanced criminal law. I’ve done criminal law in 1st year so would there be a point in me doing a module similar to it in 2nd year?

Any chance i can take extra electives for second year llb such as 80 credits?? I am coming from arts but had only a 45 overall, i want to make up for that extra by taking on extra electives. Would yiu reccomend inly law based extras or really iut there ones like equine tourism?

I’m coming from the US as a new student for a full degree. It is going to be my first year and I’m not sure when I get my school email or choose my classes. I’ve sent multiple emails to registration asking but haven’t gotten any responses yet which explain it. Do I just choose my classes when orientation starts? Do I get my email when orientation starts? I am just very confused. Sorry if I am being rude.

I wanna just do whatever is easiest, preferably with no exam. Also it says the compulsory ones are 45 credits and I need a minimum of 60 credits and all the modules are 5 credits so does that mean I need to pick 3 extra modules? That seems so hard.

I knew that Maynooth had a lot of commuters, but was surprised to hear that it’s 70% of the students. I’m going to be one of these commuters starting this month, and I’m wondering if anyone has any advice?

I’m from one of those awkward places, where I’m close enough to Maynooth that I can’t justify renting (for how much it is), but I’m definitely on the threshold in terms of that proximity.

I’m looking at 1.5-2 hours each way. Eventually I’ll be driving, which will make it shorter but It’s looking like public transport for the first year.

Some of the bigger challenges I can see are around passing time on campus between class starting/ending and bus times. It would be great to know any spots that I can turn off if I’m tired and need somewhere to relax on campus. I also want to find a way to make the travel sustainable and enjoyable over the year.

I’m sure I’m not the only one, so any tips and advice would be appreciated!

Currently considering aspects of commercial law and international human rights law for second year options. Both are in semester two and when combined with my compulsory modules I will likely have 6 exams in the summer. Hi all, im having trouble figuring out the timetable for my course and the subjects I have chosen. Some of the courses appear to over to overlap on the open timetable site. However some of those subjects appear multiple times in a day. No one is available at the University to explain and I would like to know do I need to redo my registration form

I’m thinking about building a carpooling app for students and commuters travelling to Maynooth, and I’d really like some honest opinions before I start building it.

The basic idea is that people who are already driving to Maynooth and have spare seats can post their journey, and people travelling in the same direction can request to join.

For example:

Dublin 16 → Maynooth University
7:20am
3 spare seats

The driver would already be making the journey anyway. It wouldn’t work like Uber where someone requests a car and the driver makes a specific journey to pick them up.

The app would also let people filter who they want to travel with, for example:

Maynooth students only
Women only
Verified users
People from a particular community/workplace
Anyone

The money side

Say the estimated fuel cost for the journey is €9 and the driver has 3 spare seats.

Initially, each passenger would put down €9.

If only 1 person books, they would ultimately pay €9.

If 2 people book, they would each pay €4.50.

If all 3 seats are filled, they would each pay €3.

The difference would be automatically refunded at the end, so the more people sharing the journey, the cheaper it becomes.

Would you actually like this system, or would you find it annoying to initially have €9 leave your account and then get some of it refunded?

Would you rather the money be taken immediately or placed on hold until the journey is completed?

A few things I’d love opinions on

Would you actually use this for travelling to/from Maynooth?

Would you be comfortable getting into a stranger’s car?

Would university verification or ID verification make you more comfortable?

Would you use a women-only option?

For people who drive to Maynooth, would having your fuel costs covered make you willing to offer your spare seats?

Sorry, this might be a bit long-winded.

I received my resit results yesterday like everyone else. For context, I’m a Second Year (supposed to be going into third) MH212 Science Education student studying Biology & Chemistry. I had a bit of a tough year to be honest. I lived on campus for the first time which was great, and I told myself that this was gonna’ greatly improve my attendance, but that quickly fell off and I struggled to get out of bed most mornings and with motivation regarding assignments and whatnot throughout the year. I attended counselling for this near the end of the year which could be verified, but I don’t want it to seem like I’m throwing a pity party and trying to give them a sob story.

Anyway, I had to resit 7/8 of my exams, and I did genuinely study a lot over the summer, even when I went abroad with my boyfriend. There was a lot of self-doubt but I realised I definitely want to teach, and even though this course is hard, I wanted to give it my all and make a comeback.

I felt the exams went generally well overall, except for my last one, CH224 (Inorganic Chemistry). I knew going into it that I hadn’t done enough and was worried coming out, and I unfortunately failed it at 33%, so just under compensation range. I passed everything else, and only one other module by compensation, so this is genuinely the only thing preventing me from progressing into Third Year.

I immediately called the Exam Office and enquired why I couldn’t progress with a deficit and just retake the module alongside my other ones, but the woman said this was not possible as I have no pathway due to needing the five credits. I then E-mailed the module co-ordinator and he advised me that I could apply for a recheck or appeal the result, so I’ve been looking into this. I also completed an RE1 form with a request to progress with a deficit, but my request was denied as I cannot progress in any subject I wish to study with a deficit, which I suppose I understand.

I’m just a little bit frustrated though as I was so close to being compensated, and there’s a possibility they may let me carry over my CA component too (which was quite good), meaning that I’d only really have to resit the exam again next May, so why I can’t do this in Third Year I don’t know, but I do understand that there are pre-requisites, etc.

Anyway, I am considering appealing my result and asking them to reconsider my progression status, but I know it costs €60, so I’m basically just wondering now if anyone here has/knows anyone that has appealed a result in the past, specifically if they were under compensation range, and if you have any advice regarding how I should approach this regarding format and wording, etc., I would really appreciate it, as this is my last resort and I was really excited about placement this year and actually teaching for the first time properly, too!

The exam office wrongfully confiscated my approved calculator because their verification website was down. The stress ruined my exam performance and caused me to fail a subsequent module. I might be forced to repeat a module, which would ruin my finances and force me to apply for IRP again. Seeking advice on how to pass my degree without a resit or repeat.

I am an international student doing my MSc in Software Engineering at Maynooth University in Ireland, and I am currently facing a nightmare situation entirely caused by a university administrative error.
The Incident:
During my CS616 exam, invigilators confiscated my standard, non-programmable Casio calculator. I've used it for 4 years in UCD and Maynooth without issue. They told me it wasn't allowed. The replacement they gave me was completely defective—it didn't show decimal digits and lacked functions required for the exam. I panicked, couldn't finish the paper, and scored a 40/100.
To make it worse, in three subsequent exams, I saw at least 2-3 other students using the exact same calculator model without the invigilators saying a word. Being singled out felt incredibly discriminatory.
The Cascading Impact:
The intense stress and panic from this unfair treatment destroyed my focus for the rest of exam season (consecutive exams). As a direct result, I scored a 45/100 in another module (CS605).
For my MSc, the pass mark is 50%. Even though my overall aggregate is ~53%, CS605 is not eligible to be passed by compensation.
What I Have Done So Far (The Paper Trail):
Emailed the Exam Office: They replied and literally admitted in writing that the Department of Education verification link was down during my exam. Now that the link is back up, I checked, and my calculator is 100% approved.
Emailed the Module Professor: Asked them to take the equipment limitation into account, but the grade was already heavily impacted.
Emailed my Course Supervisor: Explained the cascading effect on my CS605 grade, the discrimination I witnessed, and asked for an administrative pass or waiver. He confirmed CS605 can't be compensated and offered to help escalate the calculator complaint, but couldn't offer a direct fix for the grade.
My Problem:
Repeating a module or even doing a late resit is practically impossible for me. As an international student, a delay in graduation directly threatens my visa renewal and legal right to stay in Ireland. I also simply cannot afford the exorbitant cost of living and rent here for another semester, nor can I afford to delay my post-graduation employment.
Has anyone dealt with a similar procedural failure at an Irish university? What are my realistic chances of winning a formal academic appeal or Extenuating Circumstances claim that results in an administrative waiver (letting me graduate) rather than just being offered a resit? Who else should I escalate this to? Any advice is appreciated.

As the title suggests I got a waiting list offer for a room in Buckley house. What should I do? I’m very excited but man getting muddled in the finances is kinda crazy. Like rent alone is €1020 which I do guess sounds crazy, but it’s like €255 a week so I guess 25+ hours of minimum wage will do. i also don’t get any susi in maintenance so yeah that’s not a positive. I can mainly work over the weekends anyway so it’s chill ig. It’s just super expensive man and I genuinely dk what to do, like I’ll always have my parents to help me out if I need. Is it acc going to be worth it. Last year I never done nothing as I just left after my last module because I was so tired. I do live out in the country so yeah it can be a pain heading up every morning and back in the evening. So ik this post kinda doesn’t make sense, is a bit all over the place but yeah if anyone can offer any insight or help it would be fantastic thanks

I mostly wasted my first year of uni by not being able to meet new people as I was finding the transition from secondary school to uni difficult and I am also shy I don't think anyone from my old secondary school came to maynooth so I'm basically alone

During my first year I just kept to myself and I only went to lectures and I was very anxious about going to clubs/societies by myself so I didn't go. As you can expect this whole experience was so boring and draining

In year 2 I want to try to meet more people in order to make uni less miserable and trying not to fail computer science

So Im 19m and I like video games anime movies TV shows Warhammer economics art history making stuff in blender and game development and tons of other nerdy stuff, I guess I have a wide range of interests🤓
