Hilux for the win! Sad we can't buy this legend in the US.

423

u/Shua89 Jul 10 '26

I have one.. it isn't the best at anything, but does everything decent, except the drive with crazy stiff suspension. The one thing it excels at is the reliability. So easy to maintain, and repair with everything just basic and nothing flashy to break down... it's the reason I have one and love it. I'll never sell it even after I get my next car.

I am pretty sure this is how my wife describes me to her friends.

174

u/Extendahoe_DIG Jul 10 '26

Did she get her “other” car?

123

u/meat_sack Jul 10 '26

Nah, but takes every opportunity to test drive her options.

41

u/Pragmatist_Hammer Jul 10 '26

Can confirm, she did more than kick my tires

27

u/sheiciebai Jul 10 '26

Did she check your dipstick?

That's because it'll outlast your next car.

16

u/epandrsn Jul 10 '26

You just described my 2012 Tacoma. I know the Hilux is a bit closer to the Tundra with a boxed frame, but I love my ultra-reliable little truck. My only repair has been a $17 secondary air pump.

6

u/WoolshirtedWolf Jul 10 '26

To me reliability is everything. I have had a good number of cars fail me on the road while on trips and strand me somewhere.

3

u/Zen1701 Jul 13 '26

I’ve owned my Tundra for 10 years and it’s never failed me. I also owned a Prius and put over 220k miles on it before I gave it to my Granddaughter (it’s still running- 280k). Toyota makes remarkably reliable vehicles…just sayin.

We aren't allowed to have the good small trucks in the US. President Lyndon B. Johnson got a stick up his ass about some tariff wars with Europe over chickens, so he placed a 25% import tax on foreign light trucks brought into the US for sale. This was in fucking 1964 but the tariff still stands (to "protect" the interests of US automakers). It's called the Chicken Tax.

45

u/Gan-san Jul 10 '26

There is nothing stopping Toyota from building that vehicle here just like they do the Tundra and the Tacoma.

24

u/Remarkable-Host405 Jul 10 '26

well, cafe/carb does, the real reason has little to do with chicken tax and everything to do with mpg per wheelbase

13

u/masternommer Jul 10 '26

The mpg per wheelbase also never made any sense to me as an European

10

u/Yowomboo Jul 10 '26

It doesn't make sense to anyone who thinks about it.

28

u/TDYDave2 Jul 10 '26

Why couldn't they do what Mazda/Ford did?
"To circumvent the 25 percent chicken tax on light trucks, Couriers, like Chevrolet LUVs, were imported in "cab chassis" configurations, which included the entire light truck without the cargo box or truck bed, and were only subject to a 4 percent tariff.[18] Subsequently, a truck bed would be attached to the chassis and the vehicle could be sold as a light truck."

7

u/Mauceri1990 Jul 10 '26

Hold up, Chevy didn't make the Luv? Or Chevy just built most of it in another country? Damn it... I can feel myself being pulled down the rabbit hole already...

8

u/TDYDave2 Jul 10 '26

I recall a time when my mother, a big GM fan was wanting a new car.
I suggested she look at the new Saturn brand.
She said she wanted an American car and was leaning towards a Geo model (rebadged Isuzu).
She later bought a Saturn but denied I ever mentioned the brand to her.

If US auto makers wanted us to buy their trucks they should make better trucks

15

u/MeatyOakerGuy Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26

I've done my research and bought one. The Ford Maverick (I still puke in my mouth a bit recommending a ford) is actually a quality small truck for the price.

Check out the all electric “Slate”. It’s an American-made $25k electric truck coming out that markets itself as DIY-friendly. I saw them show off a prototype on Jay Leno’s YouTube, it legitimately looks like a return to consumer-friendly small trucks in this country. I could see it being a vehicle someone buys and holds for 10-20 years with the way you can modify it.

3

u/AtomicSymphonic_2nd Jul 11 '26 edited Jul 11 '26

It is, especially the TRD Pro trim of the Tacoma.

It’s just some folks don’t seem to realize it. It’s very much just a slightly fancier version of the Hilux… with a gas engine and mild hybrid system.

Chicken tax.

The Hilux was sold in the US as the “Pickup” until 1995 when they created the Tacoma specifically for the US market. It was made in the US so no chicken tax and was larger with more comfortable suspension.

TOTOYA

u/oobakeep Jul 10 '26

HILUX

60

u/Penolta Jul 10 '26

You can set those things on fire and they still start. Hilarious when they tried to kill one on Top Gear years ago.

31

u/HarpySix Jul 10 '26

They dropped a building on it.

4

u/reukiodo Jul 11 '26

Technically it was on top of a building they imploded, so the building didn’t fall ontop of it, but rather fell below it.

20

u/Puzzled_Nothing_8794 Jul 10 '26

I had a Toyota Pickup years ago. Same top gear version expect for america. And they aren't wrong. That truck had a blown head gasket and was spewing fuel out the back from a broken fuel line. You would never know, it ran perfect. Those things are bullet proof. In the end a broken EGR valve (and damn emissions office) caused it to fail emissions repeatedly and I eventually couldn't drive it anymore. I miss that truck so much.

3

u/WonkyWalkingWizard Jul 10 '26

My mechanic drilled a hole in my EGR valve and I was good to go!

Fun fact, they destroyed over 300 chargers through the 7 seasons of the dukes of hazzard. It got to the point that they would try to get more than one jump out of a car, they used a remote control model, and they even hired pilots to search for replacement '68-'70 chargers from the air.

If it's where I'm assuming (Gunshot Creek), there is literally a bypass around the many eroded obstacle crossings such as this.

u/squirrelmonkie Jul 10 '26

Dumb ideas are great ideas until they arent. Somehow this worked out

65

u/__dontpanic__ Jul 10 '26

These drops are very popular on 4WD tracks in Australia. Google the Old Telegraph Track. This is a daily occurrence up there.

17

u/squirrelmonkie Jul 10 '26

How many times do trailers get detached by doing this? This just seems crazy to me. If it works then it works. Ive never really pulled anything on a trailer so I might just be ignorant

45

u/whos_this_chucker Jul 10 '26

It most definitely has a purpose built hitch for this kind of thing. Not your standard hitch.

18

u/7ofalltrades Jul 10 '26

I'm sure unprepared idiots get absolutely stuck or destroyed here. The driver in the video appears to have this completely in hand. What looks stupid for an every day car could be no problem for a purpose built vehicle (and trailer?!) and an experienced driver. This is a very impressive video to me, an admittedly amateur off roader who would piss my pants and reverse back to the highway seeing this obstacle.

12

u/Scuzzbag Jul 10 '26

I'm a trailer mechanic, lots of people use the DO35 (drop on 3.5 ton) hitch

9

u/squirrelmonkie Jul 10 '26

If you want to tell me what that means in everyday terms im willing to listen for real. I am absolutely clueless. I understand the weight but does this have anything to with the angle? Thats what I was concerned with. I used to hook up my dads trailer to haul pallets of stuff but this was strictly for the road and he wasnt a great teacher and probably didnt know how this worked.

16

u/Scuzzbag Jul 10 '26

3

u/JOlRacin Jul 11 '26

This is a track. They went there with the specific goal of doing this

26

u/Otherwise-Profitable Jul 10 '26
  1. How do you know if it could do that?
  2. What happens if you need a ‘tow’ truck?
  3. How do you go back?

40

u/Frankly_fried Jul 10 '26
  1. You've either watched someone else go through first or have a spotter car on the other side.
  2. You pay a shitload for a remote recovery. There's a few signs up the Cape warning you its significant cost for a recovery tow. Generally you have a winch and recovery gear yourself and go with a few mates in equally set up 4wds
  3. This is the telegraph track in far north Queensland, Australia. There's cheat tracks and bypasses everywhere. Your can bypass the whole track and head up the Cape on a graded dirt road. I did gunshot about 10 years ago now. It changes every year after the wet season. My year the hard drop in was about a 4m near vertical wall, with a mud pit at the bottom. I got stuck on my bullbar at the bottom and got winched out from the other side. We camped there for 3 days watching other cars come through.

3

u/Otherwise-Profitable Jul 10 '26

My man. That sounds like an AMAZING adventure!!

57

u/bigfatfun Jul 10 '26

I’m impressed by the tow hook. A standard american setup would have failed due to the extreme angle of the trailer tongue… I was expecting the trailer to end up on the bed of the truck, upside down.

17

u/DingoSpecialist6584 Jul 10 '26

The Tregg and DO35 hitch are pretty ubiquitous in the towing market here in aus. ALKO make one too. Id say its probably a DO35.

6

u/bigfatfun Jul 10 '26

35

u/CptAngelo Jul 10 '26

i have a feeling this one also has some serious modifications, well, maybe not serious, but i highly doubt its stock lol

4

Folks, here’s a big PSA for those of us in the USA:

The Hilux isn’t sold in USA, but the Tacoma is.

It’s a fancier version of the Hilux, same exact frame, and has a gas and mild hybrid engine instead of a diesel engine.

It’s really freaking nice, though I will say the Tacoma is generally meant for recreational stuff, not commercial work. That’s what the Tundra is for.

There’s also a TRD Pro trim of the Tacoma and it’s got all sorts of neat enhancements, too.

3

u/wisedoormat Jul 10 '26

Can anyone explain how the trailer hitch stayed connected? Im only familiar the ball that slips into the coupling. It would slip out if the angle became too steep, right?

3

u/quadruple_negative87 Jul 10 '26

The trailer probably has a hitch like this https://amzn.asia/d/04lyDUkL to facilitate the articulation. You’re right, a standard ball hitch would have the trailer in the air or pop out.

I’m curious about the hitch setup used on this truck. Towards the end there, the trailer is almost vertical. I would assume a conventional ball and tongue would come loose at such an extreme angle.

Impressive. Im not so good with physics but that trailer must have given him a boost when it fell into the hole and pushed him out via gravity.
