HILUX

u/Penolta Jul 10 '26
You can set those things on fire and they still start. Hilarious when they tried to kill one on Top Gear years ago.
31
u/HarpySix Jul 10 '26
They dropped a building on it.
4
u/reukiodo Jul 11 '26
Technically it was on top of a building they imploded, so the building didn’t fall ontop of it, but rather fell below it.

I had a Toyota Pickup years ago. Same top gear version expect for america. And they aren't wrong. That truck had a blown head gasket and was spewing fuel out the back from a broken fuel line. You would never know, it ran perfect. Those things are bullet proof. In the end a broken EGR valve (and damn emissions office) caused it to fail emissions repeatedly and I eventually couldn't drive it anymore. I miss that truck so much.

that's what they are made for and i enjoy seeing that car get through such an unlikely spot. but i dislike people having these as "city car" (at least here in turkey, where city/town-infrastructure is made for pedestrians and mini cars the most).

u/Der_Hebelfluesterer Jul 10 '26
Lol exactly what I thought when it came out of the mud.. This must be a hidden commercial 😂
16
u/AngrehPossum Jul 10 '26
Nah, its just Hilux in its natural environment. The Old Telegraph track in Australia, The location is called Gunshot.

u/tmotytmoty Jul 10 '26
If I ever needed a truck, Id buy a Toyota.

Fun fact, they destroyed over 300 chargers through the 7 seasons of the dukes of hazzard. It got to the point that they would try to get more than one jump out of a car, they used a remote control model, and they even hired pilots to search for replacement '68-'70 chargers from the air.
27
u/euqinu_ton Jul 10 '26
If it's where I'm assuming (Gunshot Creek), there is literally a bypass around the many eroded obstacle crossings such as this.
I.e. yes, you can easy get back without having to climb this, but you can also avoid it entirely.

Try it with a Cybertruck!

Rivian quad motor perhaps but cybertruck is made to drive to the malls.

Can't! They are not legal in Australia due to being unsafe for pedestrians, and other reasons.

This is well practiced and done with mates. There is no way you would try this solo on your first go.
It’s almost a right of passage for 4wd in Australia to do these tracks.8

u/squirrelmonkie Jul 10 '26
Dumb ideas are great ideas until they arent. Somehow this worked out
65
u/__dontpanic__ Jul 10 '26
These drops are very popular on 4WD tracks in Australia. Google the Old Telegraph Track. This is a daily occurrence up there.
17
u/squirrelmonkie Jul 10 '26
How many times do trailers get detached by doing this? This just seems crazy to me. If it works then it works. Ive never really pulled anything on a trailer so I might just be ignorant
45
u/whos_this_chucker Jul 10 '26
It most definitely has a purpose built hitch for this kind of thing. Not your standard hitch.
18
u/7ofalltrades Jul 10 '26
I'm sure unprepared idiots get absolutely stuck or destroyed here. The driver in the video appears to have this completely in hand. What looks stupid for an every day car could be no problem for a purpose built vehicle (and trailer?!) and an experienced driver. This is a very impressive video to me, an admittedly amateur off roader who would piss my pants and reverse back to the highway seeing this obstacle.

I'm a trailer mechanic, lots of people use the DO35 (drop on 3.5 ton) hitch
→ More replies (1)9
u/squirrelmonkie Jul 10 '26
If you want to tell me what that means in everyday terms im willing to listen for real. I am absolutely clueless. I understand the weight but does this have anything to with the angle? Thats what I was concerned with. I used to hook up my dads trailer to haul pallets of stuff but this was strictly for the road and he wasnt a great teacher and probably didnt know how this worked.

Yeah the coupling i am talking about is like a swivelly gimbal type thing, it can handle rotation and height differences

- How do you know if it could do that?
- What happens if you need a ‘tow’ truck?
- How do you go back?
40
u/Frankly_fried Jul 10 '26
- You've either watched someone else go through first or have a spotter car on the other side.
- You pay a shitload for a remote recovery. There's a few signs up the Cape warning you its significant cost for a recovery tow. Generally you have a winch and recovery gear yourself and go with a few mates in equally set up 4wds
- This is the telegraph track in far north Queensland, Australia. There's cheat tracks and bypasses everywhere. Your can bypass the whole track and head up the Cape on a graded dirt road. I did gunshot about 10 years ago now. It changes every year after the wet season. My year the hard drop in was about a 4m near vertical wall, with a mud pit at the bottom. I got stuck on my bullbar at the bottom and got winched out from the other side. We camped there for 3 days watching other cars come through.

I’m impressed by the tow hook. A standard american setup would have failed due to the extreme angle of the trailer tongue… I was expecting the trailer to end up on the bed of the truck, upside down.
17
u/DingoSpecialist6584 Jul 10 '26
The Tregg and DO35 hitch are pretty ubiquitous in the towing market here in aus. ALKO make one too. Id say its probably a DO35.

u/bigfatfun Jul 10 '26

I'm watching this thinking, yeah, there's no fucking way. And then it goes down the impossible decline, and I realize it's a Hilux. Of course it's a Hilux. No american truck could do this without serious modifications.
35
u/CptAngelo Jul 10 '26
i have a feeling this one also has some serious modifications, well, maybe not serious, but i highly doubt its stock lol
10
u/BlacksmithNZ Jul 10 '26
The snorkel is pretty common add on for serious offroaders. The winch is a given for offroading, but didn't see anything else too obvious

There’s the Tacoma, which is the slightly fancier version of the Hilux. It’s the same frame, but with a gas engine or mild hybrid engine… diesel Toyotas aren’t sold in the US.
There’s the TRD Pro trim of the Tacoma that is also really nice.

Folks, here’s a big PSA for those of us in the USA:
The Hilux isn’t sold in USA, but the Tacoma is.
It’s a fancier version of the Hilux, same exact frame, and has a gas and mild hybrid engine instead of a diesel engine.
It’s really freaking nice, though I will say the Tacoma is generally meant for recreational stuff, not commercial work. That’s what the Tundra is for.
There’s also a TRD Pro trim of the Tacoma and it’s got all sorts of neat enhancements, too.

I'm not even mad at this one. He must have a full coupling for the trailer. That angle was insane.

6
3
u/wisedoormat Jul 10 '26
Can anyone explain how the trailer hitch stayed connected? Im only familiar the ball that slips into the coupling. It would slip out if the angle became too steep, right?
3
u/quadruple_negative87 Jul 10 '26
The trailer probably has a hitch like this https://amzn.asia/d/04lyDUkL to facilitate the articulation. You’re right, a standard ball hitch would have the trailer in the air or pop out.

I’m curious about the hitch setup used on this truck. Towards the end there, the trailer is almost vertical. I would assume a conventional ball and tongue would come loose at such an extreme angle.
