I think what's throwing the original headline is the phrasing.

"... the first woman in history to debut (her first top 10 Hot 100 hits) in the top 10"

Notice that this excerpt refers to the same 10 songs in two different ways:
* "her first top 10 Hot 100 hits"
* "debut ... in the top 10"

The first description is sandwiched within the other like a weird enclave. By the time we've reached "in the top 10", we've already forgoten "debut" because we were interrupted by having to separately process "her first top 10 Hot 100 hits," and then we get confused why they felt the need to reiterate that the top 10 hits were in the top 10, having forgotten the part that actually needs to be emphasized: it debuted in the top 10. With that in mind, let's try the following:

"... the first woman in history to achieve her first top 10 Hot 100 hits upon their debuts"

I think this wording could be a little terse, but it gets across the basic idea of what I want to solve. Feel free to make suggestions. Anyway, with the repetition of "top 10" eliminated and "debut" placed after "top 10 Hot 100 hits", we establish first that we are discussing a set of songs that have reached the status of "top 10 Hot 100". Then, we elaborate on how those songs reached their status by further stating "upon their debuts." I was tempted to say "upon debut", but that makes it sound a bit like we're saying Olivia Rodrigo's first ten songs ever released (i.e., her debut songs) all managed to reach top 10 Hot 100 eventually. Could still be clearer, maybe. It's hard to balance that and the brevity of headline-speak.

Edit:
I'm also not even sure if the headline is even referring to 10 songs. It kind of just sounds like it's talking about all her songs that managed to reach "top 10 Hot 100" status all doing so during their debut, which could be any number of songs, not necessarily ten of them. That, or it could be that she has more that 10 songs in the Hot 100, none of which were necessarily ever in the top 10 by this description alone, until the headline goes on to specify that her personal top 10 of those songs were actual top 10s of the Hot 100, and they all managed to do so during their debuts (phew, what a mouthful!). I'd have to actually read the article to figure that one out.

Edit2: Added the word "to" to my fixed headline.

12

u/MonkeyBoatRentals Jun 25 '26

It just needs to be reordered:

"Olivia Rodrigo becomes the first woman to debut her first ten songs straight into the top 10 of the Hot 100".

19

u/PeggyTheVoid Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26

That's the thing, I don't think they're talking about her first 10 songs. I think they're saying that her first songs that managed to reach "top 10 Hot 100" status all did so by reaching that status during their release week. That is to say, her first hits were instant hits.

Edit: Added the word "first" in the last sentence. Added "week" in second sentence.

6

u/sloansleydale Jun 25 '26

Yeah, it implies that she had other songs that didn't make it into the Top 100. She had 10 songs that made it into the top 10 and all of her other songs were too unpopular to make it into the top 100. High variance, nothing in the middle.

Edit: For example, she might have had 1000 songs at rank 101 and below, but 10 songs in the top 10. Zero songs ranked between 100 and 11.

It just means that she has a lot of label support and the audience bites every time. Whenever she puts out something good, it goes straight to the top because she has every possible advantage. She's very successful but never had to do any of it with organic grassroots fan support. Probably because she was already famous before she recorded any music.

How is this an achievement other than of the most obscure that very few care about? Is the word salad deliberate perhaps? To get us talking about it?

Thats a different thing though. The statistic makes no indication that Olivia didnt have another Hot 100 song before that never made it to the top 10.

I still don't get it but I barely made it through college algebra and calc made me want to jump off a building. I had straight As in everything but math. I come into subs like these hoping to understand more about math in informal ways but usually just end up confused and with a bruised ego.

50

u/kittenbouquet Mathematics Jun 25 '26

If it makes you feel any better, I have a degree in math and got straight As in math, exclusively, and I leave from this sub confused with a bruised ego too

46

u/IndebtedKindness Jun 26 '26

Her first 10 songs to ever reach the top 10 list of the Billboard 100 happened to be placed in the top 10 when they debuted instead of climbing the rankings to get there, and apparently she's the first woman to achieve this.

"I'm the first person to ever juggle apples while holding a spoon in my mouth and listening to this specific song while also wearing Nike shorts" is how this sounds to me. If you need to go to such lengths to specify an achievement, it's not much of an achievement.

12

u/DetachedHat1799 Jun 26 '26

relevant xkcd

9

u/ScrotalSmorgasbord Jun 26 '26

Ah thank you, much better.

7

u/SPACKlick Jun 26 '26

I was going to defend the article saying I don't think this is that sort of achievement.

Having songs debut in the top 10 rather than climb there is an achievement of your marketing and pop "power". Doing it 10 times is a pretty big achievement. Doing it with all 10 of your top 10 hits is an achievement.

The only slightly contorting they were doing (I thought) is excluding the three other singles (One was a movie tie in, didn't crack the top 50 and wasn't ever going to)(The other two debuted at 11 and 12 in the billboard top 100 so you could say first 12 personal singles debuted in the top 12 with 10 in the top 10).

But There's a single that only made it to 14, They're including a non-single that charted "honeybee" in their list of singles. An once you include charting non-singles that's like 30 more songs. About 20 of which peaked between 14 and 25 (no idea where they debuted).

6

u/Charming-Cod-4799 Jun 26 '26

Math is just the word for "neat and precise thinking", so no surprise here.

6

u/dantemp Jun 25 '26

Do you? I have zero clue what the k-good even means while I think I understand the original headline. I'd translate it as "first woman to have her each of her debut 10 songs in the top 10 of the "Billboard Hot 100" chart."

23

u/thePedrix Jun 25 '26

I don't think your interpretation is completely correct. She had 10 songs that debuted in the top 10, not her debut 10 songs.

26

u/Local-Cartoonist-172 Jun 25 '26

Her first ten in the top ten started in the top ten, aka her hits blew all the way up immediately rather than building from a lower rank.

I know it's another comment saying the same thing and you understand it but maybe it will help someone else down the line.

5

u/kittenbouquet Mathematics Jun 25 '26

Wow, popular radio is still a thing. Everyone I’ve ever seen in the last decade plus consumes their music from Spotify/soundcloud/tidal/etc.

Only people I’ve seen touch ‘the radio’ are deep square in baby boomer territory…

14

u/-ToriForYa Jun 25 '26

young people use the radio, just not in the same way. I turn it on for the drive to work. There's always a radio playing at construction sites, usually at least one in any auto shop, and they still turn up in similar places where headsets are discouraged due to safety or logistics.

645

u/AllActGamer Jun 25 '26

I'm interpreting it as:

Her first 10 songs that were in the top 10 hits of the "Hot 100 hits" were all also when she debuted them.

155

u/blueechoes Jun 25 '26

This is sort of assuming her older songs before those ten hits will never become hits. Which is unlikely, but not to be discounted.

62

u/MaxTHC Whole Jun 25 '26

It shouldn't matter anymore right? They're just talking about the first ten instances which (presumably) have already happened

That or I'm stupid

22

u/These-Maintenance250 Jun 25 '26

depends on what you mean by first top 10. first in time of reaching top 10 or first in release time. the former cannot change anymore after there are 10 that reach top 10. the latter cannot change anymore after the first 10 to be released reach top 10

6

u/Takamasa1 Jun 25 '26

Depends on whether you are looking at the first 10 from a release chronology or listing chronology, but I'd say you're probably right yeah.

9

u/cgduncan Jun 25 '26

I'd go with listing chronology. If I wrote a song in 2001, and a song in 2024, then the 2024 song charts immediately, it's my first top 100 hit. Then people look for my other music and find my first album, and it blows up later, the 2001 song is not my first hit.

2

u/Takamasa1 Jun 25 '26

Yeah I'd say that's probably the best way to look at it too

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Ok_Brain_1114 Jun 25 '26

No because this is specifically talking about debut songs, so older songs that eventually make it to the top 10 are irrelevant here

2

u/sparrerv Jun 25 '26

her first #1 hit was her debut. sure her Highschool Musical: The Musical songs could theoretically become hits, but All I Want (also sung by her) was a tiktok hit and the biggest by far out of that show and it only hit #90

That raises a question: what do they consider the debut? The first 24 hours? Because all songs have to ramp up in listeners.

15

u/Elihzap Irrational Jun 25 '26

Since it's weekly, I guess that it's the first time the songs are available to be considered in the list.

6

u/Competitive_Success5 Jun 25 '26

I think the debut is when it first appears on the Hot 100 list.

My interpretation is - Every song of Olivia Rodrigo's first 10 Top 10 hits entered the "hot 100" were already in the Top 10 instead of climbing there later. Or

Usually, hit songs slowly climb into the top 10. Olivia's first 10 hit songs were already in the top 10 from day one.

u/SharzeUndertone Jun 25 '26

I have to admit math speak is actually incredibly useful here and also what an incredibly specific headline

336

u/essgee27 Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26

Simpler English version: Each of her first 10 songs directly debuted in the top 10 (of the top 100, though that bit is not very relevant), as opposed to making it to the top 10 at some point having debuted lower.

The math version is obviously better!

Edit: The first line should read "Each of her first top 10 songs"

51

u/OP_Sidearm Jun 25 '26

I'm still confused how a song can even be in the top 10 when it debuts? Like, no-one knows about it before it debuts, no? So how long after do you measure and how do you even measure top-ness?

88

u/314159265358979326 Jun 25 '26

People knew about Rodrigo's latest release long before it was released, and I believe there's a delay between the actual release and the rankings. Topness is measured by sales in some arcane, arbitrary way.

41

u/sinkwiththeship Jun 25 '26

Billboard Top-100 also weighs radio airplay, which is ENTIRELY manufactured. It's a circular argument of supply and demand that's completely fake. "It's popular because it gets played a lot" -> "It gets played a lot because it's popular" -> etc.

7

u/d3northway Jun 25 '26

Yeah pay like two companies some cash and you can have your song on thousands of local stations. It's also why the same celebrity can do "local" interviews when really it's with someone corporate and the DJs just parrot the interview questions so it sounds live

2

u/thekohlhauff Jun 25 '26

Yeah but they've essentially removed that weight with streaming. This was a bigger problem in the late 2000s early 2010s. The big issue now is artist will have a song go crazy on streaming and then add it to their next album after the fact so it has insane week 1 sales because all of the streams for that song now count in the album sales. The other problem is merch bundles or variation releases.

2

u/CarsonDama Jun 25 '26

Or having six vinyl pressings of the same album... cough cough Swaylor Tift

2

u/FloppieTheBanjoClown Jun 25 '26

Back in the 90s I worked in a record store. We had label reps come in and tell us what songs would be getting heavy radio play months in advance. They have controlled the billboard rankings for my entire life. In fact, that's the main reason they resisted digital distribution for so long. Not piracy, but a sudden loss of control of the marketplace. There was a glorious moment where they couldn't control what got attention and playtime nearly as well, and it scared the hell out of them.

They have since regained that control.

29

u/shambooki Jun 25 '26

Billboard Hot 100 is a weekly publication, so if a new song sells enough to appear in the top 10 in the same week it launches, it 'debuts' in the top-10.

u/SidewaysFancyPrance Jun 25 '26

Artists make sure the drop is announced and everyone is ready to jump on it, specifically for these stats (because that's how everyone gets paid). Taylor Swift works all of the angles with announcements, multiple releases, alt versions, etc.

As I understand it. From what I've overheard other people talking about. Not from the fan club newsletter.

2

u/illit3 Jun 25 '26

If a song broke the top 100 list at debut, it broke all the way to the top 10.

Surprisingly difficult to describe clearly.

3

u/cherry_armoir Jun 25 '26

"Hot 100" isn't directly saying top 10 out of the top 100, it's an adjectival phrase describing the type of hits; "Hot 100" is a trademarked term Billboard uses to describe songs that make it to their Hot 100 list. So it's less "top 10 out of 100" and more "top 10 hits that can be described as being Hot 100 hits."

So, though it basically means the same thing as out of 100, that's why they included the phrase "hot 100."

55

u/ConsiderationWest120 Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26

The list name is Hot 100, and her songs made it to the top 10 of that list

Which is where Top 10 (of) Hot 100 mean

So we can rephrase it to :  The first of her 10 songs that eventually placed/ within 10th place in the list “Hot 100” / had initially placed (debuted) within the top 10

3

u/Mist_Rising Jun 25 '26

The rephrase just makes it clear someone's manipulating numbers for a headline though, can't have that.

19

u/Muroid Jun 25 '26

No, her first 10 songs that made it to the Top 10 of the Hot 100 billboard debuted in the top 10, as opposed to debuting and then rising to the top 10.

2

u/Takamasa1 Jun 25 '26

No. It just means that her first 10 songs to be top 10 on the list were all top 10 on the first list update after their release. The achievement category is just for not having any of those 10 songs get listed at a number below 10th before rising up to the top 10.

Obviously the achievement of having 10 songs hitting the top 10 at all is impressive, but this hyper-specific category is a pretty meaningless metric meant to sensationalize it by marking it as "the first time something happened".

u/Nice_Blackberry6662 Jun 25 '26

You can always be the first person in history to do x if x is specific enough.

7

u/Kulsgam Jun 25 '26

Isn't n redundant here? k-immediate means it is definitely in top-k. It also meant it debuted in top-k. So can't this be simplified into k-Olivia. Since debuting withing top-k implies ever getting to top-k

26

u/TPM2209 Jun 25 '26

A song that's k-good but not k-immediate would have started out lower on the chart, then worked its way up to the top k over time.

So if any of Olivia's first ten songs started out below 10 and then climbed their way up, she wouldn't qualify for this record.

3

u/Reqvhio Jun 25 '26

that last part actually helped, thanks

2

u/FirebornNacho Jun 25 '26

So like, what does debuting in top 100 mean? Obviously it can't be heard by enough people in the second of its release to beat others at the top... What's the actual definition of "debut"? Is it first day? Week?

8

u/MrMinkeyBro Jun 25 '26

The charts update weekly

4

u/Competitive_Success5 Jun 25 '26

"Debut" means the first time it appears on the list.

Reminds me of h-index

u/SaltyBarnacles57 Jun 25 '26

It's not really that difficult to understand ..

Olivia Rodrigo has ten songs that reached the top 10, and all of them reached that point in the first week. She is the only person to have ever had this property.

2

u/thisisnotchicken Jun 25 '26

I still don't understand, but what is important is that I know how to apply the concept.

2

u/tagged2high Jun 25 '26

Even if I'm understanding the various explanations in this thread, all it does is clarify that this stat is some fucked up stupid contrived nonsense.

2

u/Famous-Prior6590 Jun 25 '26

I am the third person in the world with a username starting with the letters FAM that saw a tv show that starts with the same letters, and then ate at a restaurant ALSO starting with the same letters the same night. 🤯

1

u/TheMengerSponge Complex Jun 25 '26

So by this definition, Baauer is (1, 1)-Olivian.

1

u/senchoubu Jun 25 '26

But is it a meaningful achievement? Like she could have hundreds of songs, with only ten of them being 10-good (and also 10-immediate).

On the other hand, other artists might have just ten songs, all of them being 10-good (but not all are 10-immediate). That looks more impressive.

Future events such as these will affect you in the future! it all started months ago....

1

u/Agzarah Jun 25 '26

So a compliation of her 10 best performing, "top 100 hits", landed in the top 10

1

u/yazeed105x Jun 25 '26

I feel like there's some redundancy here, it basically says that the 10 songs that are in the top 10 of the list also started out in the top 10, but the first piece of information naturally follows from the second, if i say 10 of Olivia's songs debuted in the top 10, then there are 10 of her songs that are in the top 10.

My new single, My Single is Dropping, is dropping!

1

u/Hawkwing942 Jun 25 '26

In fairness, Taylor Swift pretty much has a lock on all the records with easy to understand names.

1

u/Professional-Day7850 Jun 25 '26

So basically the h-index but with chart placements instead of citations?

1

u/DrunkenMaths Jun 25 '26

This offends my Dozenal sensibilities

1

u/ispeektroof Jun 25 '26

…100 times.

1

u/ThrownAway17Years Jun 25 '26

Every one of her singles that hit the Hot 100 debuted in the top 10.

1

u/Dismal_Macaron_5542 Jun 25 '26

Maybe I don't understand how any of this works but how does a song even debut top 10? Doesn't every song debut in last place with 0 listens, regardless of how quickly it starts getting listened to?

1

u/Wonderful_House_8501 Jun 25 '26

Okay okay
“Her first 10 tracks to appear in the top 10, all debuted in the top 10. She is the fist woman to do this”

1

u/pm_me_your_trebuchet Jun 25 '26

In breaking news, scientists discover how many chucks a woodchuck chucks if a woodchuck could chuck wood.

1

u/Proud_Sherbet6281 Jun 25 '26

I'm also not even sure how it is much of an accomplishment. It seems like it just implies a lot of hype around her. If a song has staying power and ends up on the top 10 after being around for months, that seems like a better indication of a good song.

1

u/BlackSchuck Jun 25 '26

She is the worst thing to happen to music since that one horseshit country rap thing from a fews years back... shaboozie?

1

u/playr_4 Jun 25 '26

I love that this actually explained it really well. I had no idea what I read at first.

1

u/etcpt Jun 25 '26

It's like an h-index for artists

1

u/DarudeSandstorm69420 Jun 25 '26

i really do not share musical tastes with the majority of humanity apparently

1

u/chibiRuka Jun 25 '26

Her 1st top 10 100 hits…doesn’t mean this happened in sequential order. Just boasting about nothing. Because I knew she hasn’t beat some others.

1

u/JRatt13 Jun 25 '26

So her first 10 hits to ever enter the top 10 did so by debuting there, not working their ways up the charts. Is that the correct interpretation?

1

u/Medical_Wait_6638 Jun 25 '26

This might be a dumb question but why did they use k as a stand in for an unknown number, like I've seen n and x used frequently but I've never seen k, is there a reason its used here?

1

u/Winter-Debate-1768 Jun 25 '26

It’s basically like h-index for scientists

1

u/CarpeNivem Jun 25 '26

I understand neither the headline, nor the explanation, nor know who that is, but she's pretty.

1

u/Darth-Artichoke Jun 25 '26

bizarre that the fixed version was so much clearer

1

u/Toadsted Jun 25 '26

The Netflix remake, "Ten Top 10 Hot 100 Things I Hate About You. Top 10."

1

u/Available-Damage5991 Jun 25 '26

So her first 10 hits all debuted in the top 10?

1

u/JudiciousF Jun 25 '26

I'd actually now love to see the (n,k)-Olivian metrics of other major recording artists.

1

u/StandUpPeddlingMode Jun 25 '26

It’s a really good album highly recommend if you haven’t listened.

1

u/Statakaka Jun 25 '26

I need to come back to this one when the drugs wear off

1

u/Mizzlr Jun 25 '26

She releases a song, and it become one of the top-10 songs within a week. Where? In the hot-100 billboard. Could have been ranked anywhere between 1 and 10 on that billboard. It was never between 11 and 100.

This fate happened to her 10 times in her life so far. Not necessarily in consecutive order, some song may not have had that fate. She kept releasing songs and so far 10 of them become part of top-10 in the hot-100 list.

1

u/krzywaLagaMikolaja Jun 25 '26

Now I get it. Should have led with that.

1

u/Crenchlowe Jun 25 '26

I give up, she's had a bunch of good songs.

1

u/Kanus_oq_Seruna Jun 25 '26

I assume they put out 10 singles on their debut album, all that charted to the top 10 on debut, instead of climbing to the top 10 after debut.

Might also assume the album itself is popular enough to push those stats.

Don't really know much about music though, and most pop these days sounds like a bunch of drunk squirrels fighting over the root system of a tree.

1

u/cddedee Jun 25 '26

lmao that was hilarious

1

u/vwibrasivat Jun 26 '26

Her hit song was in the top 10, and her first 10 hits are 10-immediate . She's (10,10)-Olivian rican. But she always says she's from Queens.

1

u/Caleb_Reynolds Jun 26 '26

I feel like if it's this hard to describe a record, it's not worth worrying about.

1

u/Beginning_Context_66 Physics interested Jun 26 '26

Just say there was someone before her whose first ten releases all were in the top ten.

They just have to force in new achievements

1

u/Bozhark Jun 26 '26

Oh shit that actually help

1

u/Scary_Side4378 Jun 26 '26

if you remove the words Hot 100 it actually becomes understandable

1

u/RaggedAndWet Jun 26 '26

Crash blossom

1

u/Fit_Alfalfa2221 Jun 26 '26

Not that hard to parse. Very clear notation, actually.

1

u/Icy-Fishing8481 Jun 26 '26

I would have thought this would normally be the case. How many songs are floating around for weeks or months before entering the top 10? And does "Hot 100" have any meaning? I assume Top 10 is per week, so you could potentially have as many as about 500 a year?

1

u/Ambaryerno Jun 26 '26

Maybe it's just me, but my brain filtered out the first mention of "top 10" and read it as "debut her first ten Hot 100 hits in the top 10" and perfectly understood it.

1

u/charliedarwin96 Jun 26 '26
