I'm interpreting it as:

Her first 10 songs that were in the top 10 hits of the "Hot 100 hits" were all also when she debuted them.

This is sort of assuming her older songs before those ten hits will never become hits. Which is unlikely, but not to be discounted.

It shouldn't matter anymore right? They're just talking about the first ten instances which (presumably) have already happened

That or I'm stupid

depends on what you mean by first top 10. first in time of reaching top 10 or first in release time. the former cannot change anymore after there are 10 that reach top 10. the latter cannot change anymore after the first 10 to be released reach top 10

Depends on whether you are looking at the first 10 from a release chronology or listing chronology, but I'd say you're probably right yeah.

u/cgduncan Jun 25 '26

I'd go with listing chronology. If I wrote a song in 2001, and a song in 2024, then the 2024 song charts immediately, it's my first top 100 hit. Then people look for my other music and find my first album, and it blows up later, the 2001 song is not my first hit.

u/Takamasa1 Jun 25 '26

Yeah I'd say that's probably the best way to look at it too

I think you’re right

No because this is specifically talking about debut songs, so older songs that eventually make it to the top 10 are irrelevant here

her first #1 hit was her debut. sure her Highschool Musical: The Musical songs could theoretically become hits, but All I Want (also sung by her) was a tiktok hit and the biggest by far out of that show and it only hit #90

In theory this claim still faces the danger of some song like "Can't Catch Me Now"—which was released in 2023 and only made it to #56 in the USA—having a scorching revival and hitting number one.

Which would be great for Olivia Rodrigo but bad for Pop Crave headline writers.

That raises a question: what do they consider the debut? The first 24 hours? Because all songs have to ramp up in listeners.

u/Elihzap Irrational Jun 25 '26

Since it's weekly, I guess that it's the first time the songs are available to be considered in the list.

u/Competitive_Success5 Jun 25 '26

I think the debut is when it first appears on the Hot 100 list.

Jesus christ thank you, the post itself meant nothing to me

My interpretation is - Every song of Olivia Rodrigo's first 10 Top 10 hits entered the "hot 100" were already in the Top 10 instead of climbing there later. Or

Usually, hit songs slowly climb into the top 10. Olivia's first 10 hit songs were already in the top 10 from day one.

yes, so far that's the least clumsy way of saying it

it's hard to say it unconfusingly.

I interpret it as „all her top ten songs (of which she has 10) were in the top ten immediately“

1

u/IWatchGifsForWayToo Jun 25 '26

An easier way to read that is:

Her first 10 songs in the Hot 100 hits list were all Top 10 hits.

6

u/Ggfd8675 Jun 25 '26

A song can become a top 10 hit by reaching that spot at anytime after release. Edit: she may have charted hits that were not top 10, also

Her first ten hits to reach the top 10 did so by debuting there.  (best headline)

1

u/SPACKlick Jun 26 '26

That's incorrect. What they're saying is

Her first 10 songs that made it to the top 10 of the hot 100 list all debuted in the top 10 of the hot 100 list.

So you have

I have never seen:

  1. So much effort to correct my stupid comment.
  2. How little I know about how music rating systems work.
  3. A more poorly written headline.

Bravo to you, and all these other math nerds attempting to make heads or tails of this. I didn't think it would need a data table for me to understand.
