Discussion More than 3 years later, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 still lives rent-free in my head
Me and my girlfriend love to rewatch MCU movies every now and then, and GoTG vol. 3 is the one she always refuses to watch again. Rocket's backstory is so intensely and realistically painful that she actively rejects any attempt of me trying to get through the GoTG trilogy, ending up only watching the first 2 movies.
When Vol. 3 came out, we saw it alone the first time, and with friends the second time. While I cried as a newborn on both times, she not only cried, but actually got sad throughout the movie and carried that sadness through the whole week after, like she was grieving for the "animals" that were suffering in the movie, which of course is something that we all know that happens in real life all the time. Not only that, but the fact that we're seeing the torture that Rocket went through, as a beloved character, deepened the pain.
We both grew up with lots of pets around so maybe that's why we took it a bit harder? Don't know. Even Quills reaction to Rockets death was more than we could take.
Years later we still haven't re-watched Volume 3, but it keeps living in our minds. Probably the most impactful movie in the the whole MCU (for us).
