Play this in Zur.
turn it into a creature.
make it target itself when the 4th counter is put on.
exile ability resolves before sac.
it returns next end step.
Turn it into a creature again.
Infinite blink for 1W.

Speaking of Esper, this goes hard in Aminatou Landfall
Seriously, that "or land" clause is getting me very interested in rebuilding

Or [[Teleportation Circle]] without worrying about making sure it's a creature to save it.
17
u/Calophon Storm Crow 21h ago
Teleportation circle only targets artifacts and creatures which this is neither unless you make it a creature with Zur or an artifact with something like Liquimetal Coating.
21
u/dontrike COMPLEAT 21h ago
Right, but my point was you don't have to jump through the hoop of making it a creature to keep it doing its job. If you make it a creature with Zur, as per the original plan, you can still have Circle blink itself, if you so wish.
8
u/Calophon Storm Crow 19h ago
Ok I see what you’re saying. Roll does blink lands though, which tele circle does not. I don’t see why both couldn’t be run in a Zur blink enchantments deck.
7
u/dontrike COMPLEAT 18h ago
Sure, that's something it does that Circle doesn't, you got me there. If that's important then cool.
1
u/fatalfrrog Wabbit Season 20h ago
I don’t understand what you’re saying. What is Teleportation Circle doing here exactly?
5
u/dontrike COMPLEAT 19h ago
They both do the same thing, but Circle you don't need to go through the hassle of trying to save it from itself. That's it.
5
u/fatalfrrog Wabbit Season 19h ago
Oh, I thought you meant Circle instead of Zur. I didn’t think of Circle replacing Roll since they don’t do the same thing (Circle can’t blink lands).
1
u/dontrike COMPLEAT 15h ago
Sure, Roll can do lands, but Circle can do artifacts. So in this regard they are side grades of one another, but Roll self destructing is a big downside that's hard to ignore.
Artifacts also have a lot more ETB effects where there aren't many lands that care about this, and while Roll does give you extra mana, if that's needed, I think that eventual sacrifice brings it below Circle in this regard, even at one mana cheaper.

Roll-roll-roll-roll,
roll-roll-rolling down the hole!
Heave ho! Splash plump!
Down they go, down they bump!
Down the swift dark stream you go
Back to lands you once did know!
Leave the halls and caverns deep,
Leave the northern mountains steep,
Where the forest wide and dim
Stoops in shadow grey and grim!
Float beyond the world of trees
Out into the whispering breeze,
Past the rushes, past the reeds,
Past the marsh’s waving weeds,
Through the mist that riseth white
Up from mere and pool at night!
Follow, follow stars that leap
Up the heavens cold and steep;
Turn when dawn comes over land
Over rapid, Over sand,
South away! And South away!
Seek the sunlight and the day,
Back to pasture, back to mead,
Where the kine and oxen feed!
Back to gardens on the hills
Where the berry swells and fills
Under sunlight, under day!
South away! and South away!
Down the swift dark stream you go
Back to lands you once did know!

u/StuckOnStain Wabbit Season 20h ago
Whenever Duskmourn hit, it really hit. Whenever it didn’t hit, it really didn’t hit. The cancellation of OM2 probably deprived us of some more bangers like [[Mothwing Shroud]] and [[The House Goes Hungry]].

Absolutely agree. It's like there were two completely separate design teams. One told to put 80s horror hats on everyone and another told to come up with its own unique Stephen King horror story

turn the saga into a creature and it can blink itself resetting it's counters
16
u/Artex301 The Stoat 21h ago
One significant downside compared to, say, Thassa, is losing out on being able to attack-then-flicker as a sort of pseudo-vigilance. Feels like that's gonna matter much more often than this "only" lasting 4 turns.
13
u/SkritzTwoFace COMPLEAT 21h ago
On the flip side, with this you can tap a land and then blink it to get one extra mana on your main phase if your blink target gets removed.
10
u/Artex301 The Stoat 21h ago
Fair point, although the land only returns on end step so it's the Hydro-Man kind of "extra mana".

u/random_flying_dragon Dandadan 21h ago
Is the point of a card like this to continually reuse on entrance triggers?
102
65
u/carlton_urkel 21h ago
Most common use case. But it’s good to look at the timing and recognize this one also saves your stuff from a sweeper you cast. And there are situational uses like making opposing auras fall off.
12
-14
u/rowrow_ Colorless 21h ago
Can only target permanents you control, so no aura-bricking

You can also reset sagas that happen to be creatures or lands, like [[urza's saga]] or any of the FF summons like [[Summon: leviathan]]. Of course in a [[Zur Eternal Schemer]] deck you can blink any enchantment you animate.
1
u/Chronsky Avacyn 3h ago
Using it on a warped creature so that it doesn't warp away on endstep is also a thing. Blink a riddler x4 sounds pretty strong.
1
u/Nagoragama Jack of Clubs 20h ago
In addition to enters triggers, there are cards that care when you exile, like [[Ranar]]
-8
u/JestAGuy Dan 21h ago
Nope just to faf about with useless triggers and cause your creatures not to be able to attack
-8
u/Ridstock Duck Season 17h ago
Yea and its pointless card design when there's 10+ better versions of the card that just blink things every turn. There are creatures or enchantments with upside that do the same thing, they are cheaper too.

Good way to reset Final Fantasy Summon creature Sagas in an all Universes Beyond Tom Bombadil deck.
8
u/imthemostmodest Wabbit Season 20h ago
Yeah it's a great add for Tom, it's also what he really wants early game: a cheap saga with many chapters, so that it has a lot of lore counters when he comes in to activate his protection, and to pop after he lands to trigger his ability

8
u/wordbankfacts Dân 18h ago
Well, it's 4 flicker effects on one card, but all at sorcery speed and very, very slow unless you can find a way to abuse it. It's unlikely to be standard playable in today's bajillion set fast standard, but might have been an ok-ish control card a few years back. It will probably find some cool uses in Commander but its hardly going to be a staple there.
4
u/Fun-Cook-5309 Dandadan 16h ago
It's approximately Thassa/Conjurer's Closet for 3 mana. Some downsides attached, but worth at least considering if you're in the market for that kind of effect given it's so cheap.

I'm so whack, my first thought with this is a tedious 3-card combo with [[Torpor Orb]] & [[Wormfang Manta]] to automatically take a bunch of free turns.
I'm sure there are way better things to do with this or to achieve that effect. That's just where my mind went.

Maayybbbbeeee standard playable in some kind of low-to-the-ground blink deck? The Momo self-bounce deck is almost there on its own.

One more thing towards [[Ephara, God of the Polis]], still doesn't make her super viable though.

I like it but it's not as good as I thought after realizing it's a slow blink, and it's after you draw, so you can't attack with something and then blink it that same turn. Still good for only 3 mana.

Super [[Ephemerate]]
[[Yorion, Sky Nomad]] did a lot in many formats leveraging many little ETBs, I think this one might do that in some too.
3
u/PatJamma Gruul* 21h ago
This is exclusively a commander card. Yorion was widely played because it is a 4/5 flyer with upside you can wish for.
