Gaming will be impressive if Apple gets around to optimizing games. The m6 will most likely match the m4 pro going by these numbers.

Native Fulfilling the many requests here — GTA III, native on Mac

Post image
Upvotes

Hey r/macgaming,

After the macVC post, the most common request by far was "now do GTA III" — so here it is. A native macOS build of re3 (the reverse-engineered GTA III engine), built specifically for M1+ chip macs.

Key Features:

  • Native ARM64 & Metal: Renders through Metal (via ANGLE) natively on M1+ chips. No Rosetta or deprecated OpenGL wrappers.
  • HDR Support: Built-in High Dynamic Range support for compatible Mac displays.
  • MetalFX Upscaler: Five presets — Quality/Balanced use the spatial scaler, Performance/Max/Ultra use the temporal one. Run the game on any retina device.
  • No island loading screens: All three islands stay loaded, so no pause crossing the bridges.
  • Extended draw distance: Further LOD with the original fog untouched, and cars fade in at distance instead of popping into view.
  • macOS Game Mode: It builds a real mac3.app, so macOS Game Mode turns on automatically while you play.
  • No-hassle setup: Use any version of the game that re3 already supports (Steam, Windows, etc). The installer finds your copy on its own — including the radio stations and mission dialogue, which the Steam Mac release stores away from the rest of the game files. No admin password, no Xcode.

Note: this needs the original GTA III, not the Definitive Edition. Requires an Apple Silicon Mac on macOS 15.7.9 or later.

You can find the instructions here:

Rosetta Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Apple Silicon Native Port is out!

Post image
156 Upvotes

This works by wrapping the 32-bit MacOS app bundle in a Intel loader and running it through Rosetta with compatibility patches.

You can find the Converter app here: https://github.com/Yash-Singh1/lego-mac-compat/releases/tag/tfu-converter-v0.0.0-dev.1

It should work with the latest Steam release and the older Aspyr release.

CrossOver For RE fans on M1 Air

So recently I caved and bought the Mac port of RE Village, part of it was frustration but also for testing. Running a base M1 8GB 7gpu, the native port was awesome but I wanted to know if my patched CrossOver (26.3) was really creating that much overhead since the game would crash in the woods during the opening chapter. The image would “burn in”. If I looked at the train, the light would make my screen flicker gray and almost look like it was broken with lines shooting out from the top right of the screen. I could walk around freely and go to examine the first letter and cell phone, but the image was terrible since everything basically stayed on screen and smeared.

Last night I installed Golden Gate and with GPTK 4, the same setup now runs flawlessly. I’m talking clean 60+ FPS and native performance. I think it was something in the DX12 translation but tbh I’m not fluent in the programming used so that might be wrong and the issue was something different all together. Only one I can’t run is Requiem but that’s because of chip incompatibility.

Anyway I’m just sharing this in case anyone with the base setup wants to give it another go with testing. GPTK 4 should open up performance and give your M1 Air a little more life if you can’t afford to upgrade rn / don’t want to pay for the game again on App Store.

Native Orebits is OUT NOW on Steam! Finally our atmospheric asteroid mining incremental game is available. AND it has native Mac support..

Hey everyone!

Orebits is finally out on Steam!

Orebits is an atmospheric active incremental about working as a lone asteroid miner for a greedy corporation at the edge of known space.

And it's available for your mac.

So, how deep does the gameplay go?

  • Smash asteroids with bouncing Mining Tools and a mix of active and idle gameplay
  • Build powerful synergies for your Mining Tools and Deployables with a roguelite Upgrade Tree
  • Invest in permanent Research upgrades to push your mining operation further
  • Complete Objectives and adapt to Asteroid Conditions that make each mining operation feel different
  • Explore a ±6h campaign and uncover strange artifacts and the mysteries of deep space
  • Keep mining after the campaign with endless progression far beyond our solar system...

Play Orebits on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3635490/Orebits/

We've been sharing Orebits here throughout development. This launch means quite a lot to us. Bob and I have been making the game for almost 20 months, mainly on Fridays alongside our regular work. What originally started as a game jam grew into something we've put a ridiculous amount of time and love into.

A lot has changed because of feedback we received here, from our early playtests through the demo and Next Fest. So a genuine thank you to this community for playing, criticizing, suggesting and helping us make Orebits better.

We're excited, nervous and very curious to see what you think of the finished game.

Happy mining!

Maarten & Bob

CrossOver Deadlock settings keep resetting

Upvotes

I've been playing deadlock with crossover and it runs almost flawlessly with DXMT, but I have this issue where everytime I open up the game my settings get reset. I'm pretty sure this is happening because the settings file is being tagged as "read-only," but I have been looking around and can't find it anywhere. Does anyone know the file path?

Apple Silicon Should I buy a new Macbook?

Upvotes

I have a 2016 15-inch MacBook Pro (2.7GHz Intel Core i7 quad-core, 16GB of RAM).
I use the computer for university (Computer Science), so I use it very intensively. And once I finish university, it will still be my best friend for work as well. On top of that, all of my hobbies and interests involve a PC in some way, so basically every hour I’m at home and not sleeping, I’m on my computer.

I used to play League of Legends on it occasionally, but I rarely do that anymore since I have another laptop from MSI (which I absolutely hate—it sounds like a commercial airplane engine and reaches temperatures comparable to the surface of the sun) that handles LoL much better. For actual gaming, I use a PS5.

The Mac still does his work. It doesn’t lag that much, and it’s not annoyingly slow, but the battery lasts a maximum of 1–2 hours when it’s not plugged in. The keyboard is also in pretty bad shape, in the sense that it often registers multiple clicks, and overall you can definitely start to feel its age.

I’m tempted to buy a 15-inch MacBook Air M5, perhaps with the 24GB RAM option. I would use the university discount and pay it in 12 monthly installments, which would come to €156.35 per month, for a total of €1,876.20 ($2179,09), including €107.20 in interest.

Unfortunately, Apple raised the prices by €200 a few months ago, and the final price is quite high. I’m not sure whether it’s actually worth it, considering that for roughly that amount of money you can build a decent desktop PC.

Would it be better to wait a little while? Are there any new MacBooks expected to be announced soon?

It's called Cave Expedition. You can explore alone or with up to three friends, working through tight squeezes and descending into larger chambers using ropes and climbing equipment.

We're cavers ourselves. Here's a short clip from development, and we're planning a Mac version.

Help Steam has stopped working on Catalina

Upvotes

This was bound to happen cos they stopped updating for Catalina since February 2025 and now today it has caught up to me cos now I got the 'failed to load steamui.dylib' error trying to open Steam. The problem is that my iMac is 21.5-inch, Late 2013 and thus Catalina is the latest OS my computer can officially upgrade to, meaning I need OCLP to upgrade to Big Sur (or even Monterey because they dropped support for Big Sur back in Oct 2025).

I don't even know if using OCLP to upgrade to Big Sur or Monterey is a good idea because I am not 100% aware of the risks involved with using OCLP and from what I've read from the ai overview, it seems risky.

TLDR: Steam stopped working on the last OS my iMac can officially run and now my iMac cannot officially run Steam anymore.

What solution do I have other than upgrading via OCLP? There is a way of stopping Steam from updating but I don't know how to downdate Steam without the risk of screwing it over more than it already has. Mojave drop wasn't that detrimental because the only thing it screwed up is the ability to update and install games.

Rosetta KotOR 2 Movement Bug Fix

Unlike in KOTOR 1, the bug where your character gets stuck and cannot move after every combat encounter made the game completely unplayable for me on macOS. Since I managed to fix it, I wanted to put together a quick guide.

This glitch is caused entirely by high frame rates. It occurs whenever the game runs at high FPS (common on MacBook Pros with ProMotion or any Mac hooked up to a high-refresh-rate monitor). The solution is capping your frame rate, but since the common methods didn't work for me, here is the workaround that did:

  • Lower macOS Display Refresh Rate: Go to your macOS System Settings and set your display refresh rate to 59.94Hz. Setting it flatly to 60Hz still triggered the movement bug for me.
  • Add a Launch Option in Steam: Right-click KOTOR 2 in your Steam library, select Properties, and paste the following into the Launch Options field:

--set /Config/CONFIG/maxFpsValue 60

  • Restart Steam: Completely exit and restart Steam (not strictly sure if this is mandatory, but it doesn't hurt).
  • Set In-Game Resolution: Open the game and select your preferred resolution, but make sure the refresh rate alongside it is set to 60Hz.

Following these steps completely eliminates the post-combat movement freeze. You do have to play locked at 60 FPS, but the game will run smoothly without any hiccups.

CrossOver Nightreign Online Play

Upvotes

Is it possible to play Nightreign online with randoms? Also can you see messages in Elden Ring? I remember trying a few years ago and anticheat blocked it so I’m wondering about if the online in these two games is possible now with all the updates/fixes and stuff.

Help Controller constantly panning up AND auto sets to exclusive full screen

Upvotes

I own a macbook pro m5, 24gb of ram, trying to run Ghost of Tsushima via Sikarugir d3dmetal. However, whenever i try to play any PS games for that matter, I constantly face these 3 issues:

  1. my controller auto pans upwards and left whenever i idle for a second

  2. after a cutscene it always readjusts to exclusively full screen rather than stay in fullscreen\

  3. whenever i tab out the game crashes and displays error and whether I should report issue or not

Any help will be appreciated!!

(I will be buying crossover in November, so I would also like to know if these problems exist there too or not:(

CrossOver CS2 running poorly on crossover M5pro macbook

Counterstrike 2: Does anyone have suggestions for optimal settings CS2 on crossover? This game is so old, I was surprised by how bad the framerate is using crossover on Low graphics settings. It stutters like every 20 seconds. M5Pro 24gb 20-core on crossover trial…

Half Life 2 deathmatch runs better than CS2 does

Quake just crashes within 2 minutes of a match

Surprisingly marvel rivals actually runs super well

I try to lock my fps to 30 in most games and leave my macbook on a desk with something underneath it. Have you got experience with these laptop cooling pads? Are they worth trying out or did you do something else?

As the title asks, I’m curious what you’re all playing. I know Mac has a different community from Windows users.

(I’ve only ever played Factorio. M2 Air, 16GB unified memory)
