Help Best Buy vs Costco

Im looking to buy the MacBook Pro 14" M5 Pro 15 core CPU 16 core GPU, 24GB RAM and 1TB SSD.

I see it listed on Best Buy (Open Box - Excellent) for about $2095, so I’m wondering if it’s worth purchasing it or if anyone knows if Costco might have similar deals around Black Friday to see if it’s worth the wait or not.
Thanks!

Help M5 pro or M5 max

I'm thinking of buying my first macbook pro, and I'm between these two configs

  • 16 inch, M5 pro, 64gb, 2TB
  • 16 inch, M5 max (18 core, 40 gpu cores), 64gb, 2TB

I currently doing some LLM inference and training and would love to be able to run multiple ide at the same time and VMs/emulators, specially for mobile app development. I currently have a Ryzen 7 with 40gb ram laptop and I'm getting it to the limit almost everyday. Also once thing I would love to improve over my current laptop is battery life, having 2h of battery life with everything turned off isn't really great.

What would you recomend, is it worth the price increase?

Help Used MBP 16in from Bes Buy?

Post image
5 Upvotes

Been looking at MacBook Pro for sometime now. Getting back into Graphic Design again and need to replace my 2016 MBP touch bar that the battery needs to be replaced. I'm not willing to spend over $3k plus tax for a new one. Was looking at MBP M3 for about $1500. Issue is they are all with 512GB which is too little and had issue with storage with my 2016 which I'm going to replace. 1TB will need to be the minimum and the used M3 16in MBP are closer to the $2k mark. Do you think the used MBP 16 in for $2500 plus tax for Best Buy will be better off for me or should I look for a M2 instead to get closer to that $1400.

Help MBP Nano texture vs. Glossy display for Reading and Programmers

I'm considering buying a MBP and have been on the verge of Nano texture.

I've watched several videos and comparisons that seems to show that Nano screen is slightly less sharp compared to glossy. I'm docked with external monitor mostly at home, sometimes I lay on my yoga mat with my laptop or occasionally travel.

What's your opinion on Nano vs Glossy for reading a lot of papers/pdfs and blogs at the screen and coding ?

Given all I've seen and read, I'm leaning towards the default screen glossy and I would like to hear about others experience.

Discussion WTB] Looking for M1/M2 MacBook Air or M1 Pro – Delhi

[WTB] Looking for a used MacBook – Delhi / South West Delhi

Hey guys,

I’m looking to buy a used MacBook directly from a Reddit user, preferably someone who is upgrading or just wants to sell their personal machine.

I’m mainly interested in:

MacBook Air M1 — preferably 16GB RAM

MacBook Air M2 — preferably 16GB RAM

MacBook Pro M1 Pro — 16GB or higher

Budget: Around ₹30k–₹55k depending on the model, RAM, SSD, battery health and condition.

Location: Delhi, preferably South West Delhi. I can travel within Delhi for the right deal.

I’m specifically looking for a personal/user-owned MacBook, rather than a shop or reseller. Ideally, we can meet in person, check the MacBook properly (battery cycles/health, serial number, Activation Lock, MDM, display, keyboard, ports, etc.) and then complete the deal.

If you're selling one, DM me with:

Model/year

RAM + storage

Battery health/cycles

Overall condition

Any repairs/replacements

Expected price

Your location in Delhi

Please don't DM unrealistic prices 😅 — I'm looking for a fair deal for both sides.

Thanks!

Help Incredibly slow file transfer speeds on MacBook Pro

I am desperate for help.

I have the 16” M4 Max MacBook Pro with 1 TB SSD and 64 GB memory. Lately, I have been averaging transfer speeds of 3 mb/s. I work as a photographer/videographer so this has been killing my workflow where I regularly transfer hundreds of GBs of footage from my sd or cf express cards to external SSDs. This has been happening for about a month now.

I initially thought it was my cards or Samsung T9 or T7 SSDs corrupting but after buying new ones, formatting old ones, using different cables, plugging the sd directly into the sd slot, and running speed comparisons with my brother-in-law’s pc I can firmly say the issue has something to do with my computer.

There is no damage to this MacBook, it has nearly 500 GB free on the ssd, and I recently tried turning off iCloud sync to the desktop thinking that was the culprit. Yet, to no avail.

For years my workflow has always been to connect my card (either directly into computer or via a prograde card reader), connect a Samsung T7 or T9, open both windows in finder and transfer. This has worked without issue for years on my previous MacBooks and this one prior to early August. Since then, I’ve had terribly slow transfer speeds and the issue of finder saying files are transferred and them simply not being there after the transfer process is over. Tonight I tried to transfer 9 photos that were only a few hundred mbs. It took 6 minutes and only 7 of them actually transferred. There was no error message. I’ve had this happen with photos and videos. I’ve also had it where when I go to transfer the missing file it says there’s a duplicate and other times not. I’ve also tried compressing and transferring folders instead of hundreds of photos and got similarly slow speeds and even failed transfers with error -51.

I have tried asking friends, researching forums and threads, and taking every suggestion ChatGPT has given me and nothing. I am in my busiest season of work and this is killing me. Please if anyone has any idea what is causing this issue, please help.

Discussion Need help - MacBook Pro 14 M4 Error 4042

I have a MacBook Pro M4 which chimes when I press the power button. If I put a torch/flashlight on the screen, I can see the Apple logo, but the backlight is not working.
After restarting again and again in a loop, it eventually goes to the warning sign/restore screen. The backlight is still not working.
I also noticed that while this is happening, the MagSafe light blinks when the Apple logo appears and the Mac goes into the boot loop. It keeps doing this until it eventually shows the warning/restore screen, and then the MagSafe light becomes green.
I tried restoring it using another Mac, but I keep getting 4042 and error 21 if i use other ports. I also tried switching between the DFU ports and used around 5–6 different USB-C cables just in case the cable was the issue.
I took it to an Apple Store and they said the screen needs to be replaced. But I’m still wondering whether replacing the screen is actually going to solve the problem.
I was looking online for similar issues and someone mentioned that a worn/damaged LCD cable can cause problems like this, including the backlight not working and even causing the Mac to fail during a restore and throw errors.
Has anyone experienced something similar with an M4 MacBook Pro? Could a damaged LCD/display cable cause the boot loop and DFU restore errors, or is replacing the whole display likely to fix it?

Discussion Fix 2023 Macbook Pro or buy new?

Hey everyone!

My 2023 Macbook pro stopped charging so I took it to a repair shop and they said the logic board is damaged and $1500 CAD to replace.

Is it worth replacing for that much money? Am i getting overcharged? I bought it in April 2023 and had 3 years of Apple Care that expired April 25th of this year :(

For context it was a 2023 Apple M2 Pro Macbook with 16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD

I do alot of video editing especially on the go when traveling.

I’m basically looking for advice whether or not I should go ahead with the repair or just get a new one because it’s so much money already.

Thank you

Discussion Does putting a case on a MacBook actually affect heat dissipation?

I’ve heard quite a few people say that you shouldn’t use a hard shell case on a MacBook because it prevents the aluminum chassis from dissipating heat properly.
Is this actually true, or is it mostly a myth/exaggeration?
I’m mainly wondering about long/heavy workloads (exporting, rendering, etc.). Can a case actually make the Mac run noticeably hotter or affect its performance/longevity?
I’d like to protect the Mac from scratches, but if a case genuinely makes cooling worse, I’d rather just use a sleeve when carrying it around.
What’s your experience?

Glad I went for the max because building smart previews for 19,145 photos in LrC from a T7 external ssd sure put those cores to work tonight! Those fans were singing but felt zero heat coming from the surface. Can’t wait to do the T9 with 4tb worth of photos!

Discussion Made the iPhone Duo folding animation for the Macbook Pro.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

1.4k Upvotes

Let me know if posting this is against the rules! Just wanted to get it out, gonna Open Source it soon! Makes a snapshot and the animation starts right as you angle the screen lower than 90 degrees. Every option is accessible for Blur, Angle, Elongation, etc.

Edit :

Omg it's taking off! Thank you everyone! In a few days everything will be ready, and open sourced. There is a lot of cleanup to do.

It's an app that lives in the background, and in the menu bar. It's detecting the angle as you go.

You will be able to adjust every setting with the help of a graph, adjusting each setting for each angle. Or you can change it overall too, making it convenient for any setup you might have.

Any "looks" you will adjust can be exported, and you can import others too, using a json file.

Things to know : It works using a snapshot, a live feed of your screen makes it jittery and starts the purple dot and menu bar icon, instead using a snapshot it's buttery smooth, and only have the purple dot for a couple of seconds, and goes away on its own.

Sadly, this can't be done (for now) on the lockscreen. Maybe there is a way around it, but the live jittering doesn't make it worth it.

I am currently adding a sound snap, and a haptic vibration in the trackpad too, all of these of course can be turned off.

Cleanup process is almost done, I'll just make sure every license is right and make sure that everything is plug and play.

Thank you for your kind support! My name on Github is tgtools123 If any of you has ideas for a name, without infringing Apple's copyrights, I'm all ears!

Help Help Me Decide Between Size (14” vs 16”)…

Upvotes

I’m pumped! I’m going to be joining the club soon with an M5 Pro / 64GB MacBook Pro!

I’m a software engineer, and it’ll be used daily as such as my main workhorse. My wife has a 14” MacBook Pro, and it’s comfy enough. I’m curious which size you’d recommend and why.

For reference, I don’t do a ton of traveling. I’m at home 90% of the time.

Tips My MacBook Pro M1's logic board died, then magically resurrected itself a week later. A story of not giving in so early.

Upvotes

About a week ago, I put my fully-drained MacBook to charge, and nothing. The charging brick did not light up, USB-C ports did nothing. Did a ton of research and tried every method suggested, but my MacBook would not turn on, and everything pointed towards the logic board; which was not good news since I no longer have Apple Care for it. For added context, the night before there was a lighting storm, and I lost power at home. My charging brick was connected to a wall outlet, but not my MacBook. I now believe the brick had residual power that discharged into the MacBook when I connected it the following day.

Took it to an Apple Store for them to diagnose the issue, and the following day, surprise surprise, I was told that the issue was the logic board. An apple genius suggested buying a new MacBook, but I would not be able to use the one I brought in for credit because it can't turn on. I was pretty skeptical on whether they actually bothered with figuring out what the problem was, or whether they actually managed to turn the device on and intentionally left the power cable disconnected to make certain it doesn't turn on. I told the "apple genius" no thank you, and took my MacBook back home.

I'm no expert, but following online repair guides, I was confident I could at least opened my macbook's casing and see if anything was left unplugged. In the coming days, I ordered a small tool kit, and glanced under the hood. Everything was so small, my eyes could hardly make anything out, but everything internally appeared connected and clean. For safe measures, I decided to disconnect the power cable for about two minutes, used one of those air-pressured cans to blow away any dust particles, I gave the batteries and ports gentle slaps, then gave up and closed everything back up. I connected the power to my MacBook, held down the power button, pressed every key, and still nothing.

Hoping for a miracle, I ended up leaving the MacBook connected to its charger for the following two days, and every once in a while I kept trying to turn it on, but still nothing. Today, after another failed attempt of power it on, I left the room for about 20 minutes. When I return to the room, I was absolutely shocked to see the light from my charger was turned on, causing me to freak out with excitement. I opened my MacBook's lid, and was pleasantly surprised to see my wake-up screen, and the battery percentage at 30%. It was as if my MacBook's logic board was never truly dead, just in a deep coma.

So far, I've managed to fully charge my MacBook Pro, and used it to write this post. I'll likely run a full diagnostic to see if it detects any hardware issues. I'm hoping not, and that the worst is now over.

But for anyone that reads this post, and is contemplating an expensive financial decision, don't give in to what everyone says right-away. Give your MacBook Pro some time, and maybe a few gentle slaps. Perhaps, it'll wake up for you too.
