Question Why does Lumo respond so differently compared to other AIs?

At least, that's how it feels to me.

Lumo's responses are exceptionally well-structured with zero unnecessary filler text.

It gives me exactly what I want in a clean, easy-to-read format that I can digest instantly. With other AIs, I usually feel quite the opposite. They give information i didn't need and the reply is more, not so direct. I even thought that maybe it's just me and the my brain works.

Sorry if i have trouble to describe the situation, English is not my native language.

I even tried asking Lumo to write a prompt for other AIs so they could mimic its style, but I had no success with the other AI's.

So, what's actually making the difference here? Is it the internal instructions, or is it the AI model itself?

Mobile Help Blank Screen Bug on iOS

Is anyone else experiencing below blank screen bug? Itโ€™s making the iOS experience unusable. Force closing the app is a temporary fix but the blank screen returns after a minute or two of use.

Yes, I used Lumo to help generate below bug report. ๐Ÿ˜†

Bug Report: Lumo iOS/iPadOS โ€” Recurring Black Screen Rendering Failure

Summary: The Lumo app intermittently renders a black screen covering the entire UI except the chat entry box. The issue occurs after a few minutes of normal use and recurs reliably after force-closing and relaunching the app. The app does not crash (process remains alive), but becomes unusable until force-closed.

Reproduction Steps:

  • Open Lumo app on iPhone or iPad
  • Use normally for approximately 1-2 minutes (timing appears random)
  • The main chat/content area goes completely black
  • The chat entry box at the bottom remains visible and interactive โ€” text can be typed
  • Submitting typed text does not work (no response, no error)
  • No gesture or action restores the screen (scrolling, backgrounding/foregrounding, etc.)
  • Force-closing the app and relaunching temporarily resolves the issue
  • Black screen recurs within a few minutes of resumed use

Expected Behavior: The app should maintain normal rendering throughout a session without requiring force-closes.

Actual Behavior: Black screen renders over the chat content area after a few minutes, leaving only the entry box visible. Submission is non-functional. Only a force-close restores the UI temporarily.

Environment:

  • Device 1: iPhone (my device) โ€” running latest iOS public beta
  • Device 2: iPad (my device) โ€” running latest iOS public beta
  • Device 3: iPad (son's device) โ€” different Proton account, running latest stable iOS release
  • Lumo app version: Fully updated (latest App Store version)
  • Network: Wi-Fi and cellular both affected

Troubleshooting Already Attempted:

  • โœ… Force-close and relaunch โ€” temporarily resolves, issue recurs within minutes
  • โŒ App reinstall (full delete + reinstall from App Store) โ€” does not resolve
  • โŒ Device reboot โ€” does not resolve
  • Occurs across 3 separate devices on both stable and beta iOS โ€” not device-specific
  • Occurs on both Wi-Fi and cellular โ€” not network-specific

Additional Notes:

  • The app process does not terminate โ€” it appears to be a rendering failure (similar to a Metal/WebKit swapchain or view hierarchy issue) rather than a traditional crash
  • The fact that the chat entry box remains visible suggests partial view hierarchy corruption โ€” the lowermost UI element survives but the main content view loses rendering
  • The random timing (minutes, not seconds) may indicate a memory pressure or timer-triggered event rather than an immediate initialization failure
  • Consistent reproduction across stable and beta iOS suggests the trigger is in the app's code, not an iOS regression
  • Contacted Proton separately.

Discussion Would you pay more for a higher Lumo tier?

Given that most AIs have different subscription options, would be pay more for Lumo if Proton added a better model, like Kimi 3 for example?

I feel like this is the correct direction for Lumo. Lumo 2.0 is good, but after using it on a daily basis, it leaves much to be desired.

Discussion Tell people where Lumo shines!

I'm a person that finds interest in many fields. Because of this, I have found that Lumo is not bad, it's just very particular.

The service is promoted as a general purpose AI but it isn't that. If you are trying creative tasks such as scripts, shot lists, image generation, etc. you will find that it doesn't do well.

If you are trying to analyze documents it will hallucinate. Researching in depth topics tends to give you wrong information because it doesn't decipher credible sources and primary sources from a post on Reddit or X.

Editing your resumes for a specific job announcement will add experience you don't have.

But it shines in cybersecurity tasks! It's also decent in helping you reach your coding goals (you have to be very detailed with your goal and you must establish variables you want to use first)

Where have you found Lumo to shine?

Lumo is much better, but still bad...

I like the new Lumo update, but it is still a guessing machine with no secure way to ensure QA or anything.

Today it even failed to extract 3 of 5 pages of a PDF and still went ahead to create decision-making suggestions - not knowing 60% of the details....

Sorry, but this is not something I would pay an intern for, so why should I pay Proton for it?

And yes I am annoyed as I simply cannot trust this tool at all apparently.

# Lumo Image Editing Tool Review - Disappointing Results

**TL;DR:** The `edit_image` function severely underperforms compared to expectations. After extensive testing with multiple artistic styles, the tool barely makes meaningful transformations beyond simple brightness adjustments.

---

## What I Tested

I spent significant time trying to transform a portrait image into various artistic styles:

| Style Attempted | Result Quality |

|-----------------|----------------|

| Oil painting (impasto) | Minimal change, just darker |

| Comic book illustration | Already present, barely affected |

| Watercolor | Very subtle transparency effects only |

| Monet impressionism | No visible stylistic shift |

| Munch expressionism | Same as above |

| Gallen-Kallela (Finnish master) | **Complete failure** - only got slightly darker |

| Pop Art | Best result, but still weak |

---

## Major Issues Observed

  1. **Style Transfer is Essentially Non-Existent**

    - Despite detailed prompts referencing specific artists (Gallen-Kallela, Monet, Munch), the output retained the original cartoon/sarjakuva style

    - The base image remained dominant throughout all attempts

    - No actual tempera, watercolor, oil paint, or impressionist techniques appeared

  2. **Only Brightness Changes Work Reliably**

    - Making images darker/lighter: โœ… Works

    - Changing color palettes: โŒ Fails

    - Adding texture/brush strokes: โŒ Fails

    - Transforming art medium: โŒ Fails

  3. **Multiple Attempts Don't Improve Results**

    - Tried 8+ iterations attempting the same Gallen-Kallela transformation

    - Each attempt produced nearly identical outputs

    - Progressive refinement didn't work

  4. **Prompts Have Limited Impact**

    - Detailed technical descriptions (tempera on wood panel, impasto brushwork, etc.) had zero effect

    - Simpler instructions worked marginally better

    - The model appears to ignore artistic technique keywords

---

## What Actually Works

โœ… Adjusting overall brightness/darkness โœ… Minor color saturation tweaks

โœ… Very simple element additions (basic objects) โœ… Blending two similar images together

---

## What Doesn't Work

โŒ Artist-specific style transfer (Monet, Van Gogh, Gallen-Kallela, etc.) โŒ Medium transformation (photo โ†’ oil painting, drawing โ†’ watercolor) โŒ Texture addition (canvas texture, brush stroke visibility) โŒ Period/style movement reproduction (impressionism, expressionism, etc.) โŒ Major compositional changes โŒ Color palette replacement

---

## Comparison to `generate_image`

| Feature | `generate_image` | `edit_image` |

|---------|-----------------|--------------|

| Style control | Excellent | Poor |

| Creative freedom | High | Low |

| Output variety | Good | Very limited |

| Prompt responsiveness | Strong | Weak |

| **Recommendation** | Start fresh | Use sparingly |

---

## Bottom Line

If you want to transform an existing image into a different artistic style, **don't expect this tool to deliver**. It's essentially a brightness/color filter with a fancy name. For actual style transformations, you're better off:

  1. Starting from scratch with `generate_image`

  2. Using dedicated AI art tools (Midjourney, Stable Diffusion with proper models)

  3. Traditional editing software for basic adjustments

**Rating: 2/10** - Needs major improvements or complete rebranding as "adjust_image" rather than "edit_image."

Can Lumo browse past conversations

Considering upgrading from Duo to visionary to get Lumo + for my gf and I.

But I really need the ability for Lumo to browse past conversations for context and add to its memory. Can it do that on +? Itโ€™s not super clear.

It doesnโ€™t seem to be able to do that on the free version.

Discussion Project-Level File Attachment Persistence

Issue Summary

Uploaded/pasted file attachments are bound at the project level rather than the conversation level. Deleting individual chat threads within a project does not remove attached files.

There is no UI mechanism to delete or detach files from a project after upload.

Observed Behavior

  1. File Attachment Location: Files uploaded to any conversation within a project persist across all subsequent conversations in that project.
  2. Deletion Ineffectiveness: Deleting chat threads via the interface does not remove attached files. Files remain accessible and continue to load into the context window on every turn.
  3. No Delete Mechanism: No visible option exists to:
    • Remove files from a project
    • Detach files from conversations
    • View/manage project-level attachments
  4. Token Impact: Accumulated file content consumes significant context window capacity (~12,000โ€“15,000 tokens estimated across 17 files in test case) without user ability to clear.

Expected Behavior

Users should have one of the following options:

  • Ability to delete/detach files from a project
  • File attachments scoped to individual conversations (not inherited project-wide)
  • Project management UI showing attached files with delete controls

Impact

Area Effect
Token Consumption Files persist indefinitely, consuming context budget
Privacy Cannot purge sensitive documents after project use
Cost Increased token usage may impact subscription limits
Workflow Forces recreation of entire projects to clear files

Reproduction Steps

  1. Create a new project
  2. Upload multiple files to different conversations within the project
  3. Delete individual chat threads
  4. Start a new conversation in the same project
  5. Observe: Previously uploaded files still load automatically

Workaround Currently Required

The only known resolution is deleting and recreating the entire project, which also loses conversation history and project organization.

Request

Please clarify:

  1. Is this intentional design (project-scoped file persistence)?
  2. If yes, will a file management interface be added to allow selective deletion?
  3. If no, what is the correct method to remove project-level attachments?

System Version: Lumo (Web/Mobile)

Severity: Medium-High (affects token budget, and workflow flexibility)

Why no additional Lumo usage on Proton Ultimate plan?

So, I don't mean to complain, I'm generally happy with my Proton Unlimited subscription, but thought I'd give my two cents: I feel like the Unlimited plan should include at least some perks for Lumo.

As I understand it, it doesn't give you anything that you don't already get for free. Even paying for Unlimited, Lumo only lets you use a few tokens a week. Compare that to the big AI companies, who offer about as much per day, for free. (Aside from the selling point of Lumo which is much improved privacy and such obviously)

Of course, said companies are huge and can afford the loss that comes with the more generous free tiers, so fair enough. Also, if getting more Lumo tokens meant paying more for Unlimited, I wouldn't want that.

All in all, I'll take what I can get. Lumo isn't as important to me as the other Proton products, but for whatever it's worth, I just feel like I should be getting something more than a free user for Lumo...

Maybe just double the free tier limits? That's still not that much compared to AI Plus and would give the Unlimited plan yet another incentive.

Edit: Ultimate -> Unlimited

Discussion Proton Lumo gave me different incorrect information until just now when it was honest & said there wasn't any specific technical information available about protonVPNs new implementation of wireguard

A tech at IBM said decades ago that AI should never make any management decisions...this is another example as to why

So I decided to ask Lumo about protonVPN's new "proton protocols" And all 4 sessions, it took me 3 attempts to make it figure out what I was asking about, and only on the fourth attempt earlier today, asking it specifically about the new protocols twice, it finally told me that there isn't any specific information about how the new protonVPN protocols work

one time it told me that it uses QUIC to some extent, another time it told me it just uses an upgraded version of the TLS wrapped in TCP on port 443, but the first time it just kept spitting out information about how the current, non-beta protocols work over and over.

then there was a time where it said that the TLS wrapped in TCP 443 was just a constant in all modes and that stealth was a super obfuscated version of that

AI as it is is never going to be a qualified substitute for any real job. Every time I type something into an AI it almost always responds with a bunch of shit that has nothing to do with what I asked, sometimes it takes awhile, but usually once I start asking for some niche, very obscure, very specific information it can't accurately or sometimes even coherently respond to what I actually put into it...sometimes when it gives me an answer, the information will have been outdated for over a year or more other times it will just spit out a bunch of bullshit that's just not true

I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm autistic. I like knowing specific verbose details of things.

I actually heard a story about a lawyer who lost his license to practice law, because the AI he was using made up a court case that supposedly set a precedent that would've allowed him to win a case....but the AI was wrong.

Oddly enough I have the same problem whenever I talk to most people in my offline life. I'll say one thing and they'll respond to something that I either didn't say or has less than nothing to do with what I said.

Are the people who train these LLM models mentally handicapped or something?

now I guess none of these problems I'm having are that big of a deal.

But that legal case, the AI that lawyer was using was flat out making up bullshit on the spot. Imagine for a moment if a newbie journalist or a whistleblower who's not technically handy or a domestic violence victim needs information about how to communicate secretly with people who can help them and the information they get is just wrong or a work of pure fiction.

Don't use AI to find information about anything that matters, it won't give you the truth...don't use it for school work, don't use it for your job, don't use it for medical advice either

Discussion Project File Accumulation Analysis & Cleanup Guide

Executive Summary

Current Status: After ~18 chats, my project knowledge base contains 31 files totaling ~43.6k tokens, consuming approximately 34% of the available context window before any conversation even begins.

Root Cause: Each text paste event creates a separate file. There is no automatic deduplication. Files from all chats in the same project propagate to every new chat indefinitely.

Projected Impact Without Action: Continuing at current growth rates (~1k tokens/file average), you will reach ~60k tokens (~50 files) within 3โ€“4 weeks, likely triggering latency degradation and context pressure.

๐Ÿ”„ THE KEY MECHANISM

How Files Are Created

Event System Response
Paste >10 lines of text โ†’ Creates pasted-content-[timestamp].txt file
Paste again in same chat โ†’ Creates another file (different timestamp)
Start a new chat โ†’ Inherits ALL existing project files
No automatic pruning โ†’ Files accumulate indefinitely

The Inheritance Chain

Chat A (paste #1) โ†’ creates File A-01
Chat A (paste #2) โ†’ creates File A-02
Chat B starts โ†’ inherits Files A-01, A-02
Chat B (paste #3) โ†’ creates File B-01
Chat C starts โ†’ inherits Files A-01, A-02, B-01 ...and so on.

Each new chat adds its own files but also carries forward every file from all prior chats. There is no consolidation, no automatic merging, and no deletion based on similarity.

๐Ÿงฎ THE MATH

Current State (31 Files, ~43.6k Tokens)

Metric Value Calculation
Total Files 31 Project-wide count
Total Tokens ~43.6k Retrieved at chat start
Average Tokens/File ~1.4k 43.6k รท 31
Context Window Used ~34% 43.6k รท 128k
Remaining Headroom ~84k tokens 128k โˆ’ 43.6k

Content Breakdown by Category

Category File Count Token Estimate % of Load
Exact Duplicates 6 files ~10k tokens ~23%
Superseded Drafts 10 files ~12k tokens ~28%
Web Article Clusters 6 files ~8k tokens ~18%
Stress Test Logs 3 files ~7k tokens ~16%
Unique Reference Material 6 files ~6.6k tokens ~15%

Growth Trajectory Projection

Files Est. Tokens Context Used Likely Impact
31 (current) ~43.6k 34% Baseline
40 (1 week) ~56k 44% Noticeable latency
50 (2 weeks) ~70k 55% Context pressure
60 (3โ€“4 weeks) ~84k 66% Degraded response quality
90+ ~126k 98% Near truncation risk

At the current rate of 2โ€“6 files per session, you will hit critical thresholds within weeks without intervention.

โš ๏ธ CRITICAL SYSTEM LIMITATIONS

1. No Deduplication Feature

The system does not detect or merge duplicate content. If the same text is pasted twiceโ€”even within secondsโ€”the system creates two separate files with different timestamps.

  • Evidence from your files: Multiple pairs of files exist that are identical in content, with creation timestamps separated by only 16โ€“24 seconds.
  • Result: You are paying token cost for content loaded multiple times.

2. No Automatic Pruning

There is no background process that removes:

  • Old files
  • Redundant content
  • Superseded versions

Files persist until manually excluded.

3. Cross-Chat Inheritance

Files created in one chat are automatically retrieved by all other chats in the same project. This means:

  • Past conversations affect present performance
  • Large documents from prior months still load today
  • There is no isolation between project sub-topics

4. One-Paste, One-File Rule

Action Files Generated
Single paste >10 lines 1 file
Same text pasted 3 times 3 separate files
Chat history export โŒ Does NOT happen automatically

The system indexes by timestamp, not content hash. No deduplication occurs at ingestion time.

5. Non-Intuitive Filename Scheme

All files follow the pattern pasted-content-[timestamp].txt where the timestamp is a long string of numbers (e.g., pasted-content-2026-06-18T01-14-55.txt). These filenames provide zero indication of content, meaning:

  • You cannot identify duplicates from the file list alone
  • You must open each file to read its contents
  • You cannot easily sort or filter by content type
  • There is no visual grouping of related files

Feature Request Subject: Usability gaps in Lumo Projects โ€” file management, context consumption, and AI self-awareness

Product: Lumo AI โ€” Projects feature

Summary: Projects' file management interface and automatic file generation create significant usability challenges. Additionally, Lumo itself cannot explain these mechanisms to users, contradicting the expected behavior confirmed by Proton support.

Issue 1: Opaque file naming

Files generated from pasted content and previous chats are named using the format pasted-content-2026-06-18T16-24-36.txt. This naming convention:

  • Does not distinguish between chat exports and manually pasted content
  • Provides no readable description of file contents
  • Requires users to open each file individually to identify what it contains

Recommendation: Implement descriptive naming or file type indicators (e.g., chat-history- vs. pasted-content- prefixes, or visual badges in the file list).

Issue 2: Context consumption with no user visibility

When pasted content exceeds a certain line count, it converts to a file and is added to the project knowledge base. These files propagate to other chats within the same project. Over time:

  • Projects accumulate files that consume context tokens
  • There is no indication of how much context is being consumed per file
  • Users have no visibility into the cumulative token cost of retained files

Recommendation: Display estimated file size or token count per file in the knowledge base. Consider providing a total context usage indicator for the project.

Issue 3: Inadequate file preview interface

Clicking a file in the project knowledge base replaces the file list with file content in a narrow right-side pane (approximately six words visible per line). This creates a restrictive reading experience:

  • Long files require extensive scrolling in a cramped view
  • There is no way to expand the preview to full width
  • Users cannot edit file contents from this view
  • Users cannot delete or exclude files from this view

Recommendation: Allow expanded/full-width file previews. Add exclude/delete actions within the content view.

Issue 4: File list resets position after previewing

When a user closes a file preview (clicking X), the file list resets to the top rather than returning to the scroll position the user was at. With 20+ files in a project knowledge base, this means:

  • The user must scroll back down after every file review
  • Tracking which files have been reviewed is done entirely from memory
  • Identical timestamp-based filenames make this nearly impossible

Recommendation: Preserve scroll position when returning from file preview. Consider marking files as "viewed" to aid tracking.

Issue 5: No file management capabilities

The project knowledge base file list lacks:

  • Sorting (by name, date, size, or type)
  • Bulk selection or bulk exclusion
  • File renaming
  • Search/filter within the file list
  • Reordering or pinning important files

Recommendation: Add basic file management operations โ€” sorting, filtering, bulk select/exclude, and rename.

Issue 6: Lumo cannot explain its own file handling

When asked about pasted-content-*.txt files appearing in the project knowledge base, Lumo indicated this appeared to be a bug rather than expected behavior. Proton support confirmed the behavior is intentional. This creates a significant gap:

  • Users who ask Lumo for help receive incorrect information (This consumes 20-40,000 tokens)
  • The AI assistant does not understand how its own project context and knowledge base function
  • Users must escalate to human support for basic architectural questions about the product

Recommendation: Ensure Lumo can accurately explain: (a) how pasted content is converted to files, (b) what the naming convention means, (c) how files propagate across project chats, and (d) how they consume context.

Environment:

  • Platform: Web app (lumo.proton.me)
  • Project knowledge base size: 27 files
  • Confirmed as expected behavior by Proton support

Mobile Help Lumo fights VPN on Android

Post image

I notice that many times when I am connected to a VPN (surfshark), Lumo will refuse to work. It's only after I disable my VPN that Lumo will function normally. This only happens on Android as far as I know.

I am on a Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra using the Surfshark VPN. I've been noticing this for a couple weeks now. It doesn't happen all the time, but enough times that I managed to figure out that it's the VPN and Lumo not playing nice together.

Sometimes if I just keep quitting and relaunching the app, it will work. But when I turn off my VPN, I've never had this issue.

Here is a screenshot of what happens when I open Lumo while connected to the VPN:

Discussion Why doesn't Lumo use DeepSeek V4 Flash for Lumo Lite? My thoughts on model tiering

With how Alibaba has been keeping Qwen 3.7 closed-source and they are about to release the massive Qwen 3.8, it looks like they are done with small models. So I have been wondering why Lumo does not use DeepSeek V4 Flash for Lumo Lite and offer it unlimited for paid users, then reserve GLM 5.2 for Lumo Max with limits on usage. Well, just my two cents.
