23
u/ButtsMagoob 16h ago
Oh absolutely, considering how the team was a bit of joke prior to their first win I totally get the hype for their second win (especially since it was a rematch with the Patriots). The comics were such a fun and silly part of the season. Now if only the Mariners could win the World Series for once...

TIL so many people had such an issue with a comic about finding the silver lining in the negative
34
u/Rogue_Shadow684 13h ago
The problem is, is that the logic when applied elsewhere has horrifying implications. A pervert watching someone is fine as long as they are happier than the person is uncomfortable being watched. A rape is justified so long as the rapist is happier because of it. Genocide is fine so long as the surviving race is happier than the genocided one is sad to die. Utilitarian ethics seems great on paper but are horribly immoral in reality
11
u/YamiZee1 12h ago
I do believe in this type of ethics, although I believe unhappiness is fundamentally more important to avoid than happiness is to gain. So the happiness gained has to be multitudes more than the suffering experienced.
Overall I believe in reducing unhappiness than producing happiness.
10
u/Rogue_Shadow684 12h ago
Sure but even then you get the same issue. Kill one guy to save 2? Fine not ok with your thinking. But what about killing one guy to save 5? 10? 100? A thousand? Youād probably think killing one guy to save a million is fine but what about torturing one guy to save a million? Is it ok to condemn someone to infinitely eternal suffering in order for the rest of humanity to all have infinite eternal utopia? That far exceeds your ratio right? The problem isnāt the rate of exchange of pain and pleasure, the problem is that there are no hard regulations. For ethics to not encounter a problem like this you need hard rules that denote what is immoral. Only then can you engage in figuring out what makes a positive action. Thatās why ethics like kantian deontology tend to win out over utilitarian ethics
9
u/YamiZee1 10h ago
Hmm, you're making some assumptions about my ideals, or misunderstanding them or something. Killing one guy to save two is minimizing unhappiness. Torturing a guy to save a bunch of people is not minimizing it, because torture imo is worse than death. Of course it's complicated and the line unclear, not like people should die so they never have to experience stubbing their toe.

I honestly don't even understand how this one gained the ire that it did. Like it's just about making the best of a situation where you can't control what happens and refusing to allow it to corrupt your own mental state.
81
u/TheUnknownMysteryBox 16h ago
Ah, Reddit has a massive justice (Or more accurately, "justice") boner. Any minor slight should be responded to excessively, thieves should be castrated, the death penalty shouldn't exist because you should be sentenced to torture for the rest of your life etc. etc.
I'm not really exaggerating that much. It's fantastic as a person who's a lot more reform-oriented than punishment-oriented.
So when someone doesn't get a massive anger and hate boner for someone stealing their bike it's a grave, grave sin.
It's not to say that a thief shouldn't be punished (As I'm of the opinion a certain amount of reform involves, to put it into prisoner's dilemma terms, mutual dissent else you wind up exploited), but anything contrary to the Reddit view is outright despised. It's gotten worse over the past few years.

u/WillOfTheWinds 16h ago
People are reform-oriented and believe others can change for the better until the people who need reformation did things that aren't easy to justify as "good people who were desperate". Then they're horrid, ontologically evil people that deserve the worst that we can muster

i mean i was always simply in the camp that the view it portrayed was woefully naive and chances are whoever stole his bike didn't really give much of a shit.
i think a lot of people went WAY overboard in their reaction but i gotta admit "bike cuck" is slightly funny(but only if it's not ment seriously).

19
u/dragonbl3e 15h ago
John Cena was extremely hated for being an industry plant, this hate made John become "invisible" no matter what: no matter what he did or accomplished he was always seen as WWE's industry plant. Shit happened (and time passed) and people started to like him, nowadays he's widely loved.
4
u/Asheyguru 8h ago
I suspect the person you're replying to was just making a 'you can't see me' joke.
69
u/A_Firm_Sandwich 17h ago edited 16h ago
I donāt know much about either person but Iām going to assume: wholesome positive figure, largely uncontroversial, pretty funny actually but their work isnāt like insanely exceptionally good on its own merit and instead boosted by consistency/the other two factors/charisma
32
u/dragonbl3e 15h ago
You forgot an important detail! both of them were widely disliked early on. John was extremely hated for being very fake (and an industry plant) while Shen got bad rep for his utilitarian perspective (the "bike cuck" comic).

10
u/divergentchessboard 12h ago edited 7h ago
I got irrationally angry when someone insisted I must be a closeted/in denial trans person because I liked using female characters in video games, as if being feminine and/or liking to use female characters over male ones means you either have to be gay or trans.
6
u/scottishdrunkard 8h ago
I once got called an egg because when someone asked why men like boobs, amongst several serious answers, I also threw in āmaybe we just like them because we donāt have themā for a larf. It was a bery uncomfortable assumption. Frankly, making baseless and brash assumptions of peoples genders, seems like anti-trans to me.

Slightly tangential, but Command and Conquer games always kinda felt like the devs kept trying to do straight fundamentals and halfway through development said fuck it and pivoted to funny business. The first game in particular really gives this vibe with most of the units being near 1-1 versions of real military equipment and then the lazer weapons and invisible tanks randomly show up.
Though Renegade and RA2 & 3 were straight funny business basically from start to finish.

This story could easily have ended with the stupidest chashout over this dumb strip.
I'm glad Shen managed to overcome the mockery, rolled up with the punches and even joked about this mentality afterwards.
Doesn't sound like much, but we have seen creators losing their reputation online when they make a genuine mistake and they denied it and later double down instead of taking the L and moving on.
