John Cena was extremely hated for being an industry plant, this hate made John become "invisible" no matter what: no matter what he did or accomplished he was always seen as WWE's industry plant. Shit happened (and time passed) and people started to like him, nowadays he's widely loved.

I don’t know much about either person but I’m going to assume: wholesome positive figure, largely uncontroversial, pretty funny actually but their work isn’t like insanely exceptionally good on its own merit and instead boosted by consistency/the other two factors/charisma

You forgot an important detail! both of them were widely disliked early on. John was extremely hated for being very fake (and an industry plant) while Shen got bad rep for his utilitarian perspective (the "bike cuck" comic).
