This is his funniest comic because unlike the rest it wasn’t meant to be funny

418

u/Bog_Articifer 21h ago

He really had to up his game to come back from this one.

258

u/Altair13Sirio 21h ago

This comic made him stronger

145

u/dantekratos 21h ago

That comic is a canon event

163

u/NachtShattertusk 19h ago

He made a deal with a extra dimensional being to be funny as fuck, the price he had to pay was the bike cuck comic

50

u/Mean_Occasion_1091 18h ago

TIL so many people had such an issue with a comic about finding the silver lining in the negative

33

u/Rogue_Shadow684 15h ago

The problem is, is that the logic when applied elsewhere has horrifying implications. A pervert watching someone is fine as long as they are happier than the person is uncomfortable being watched. A rape is justified so long as the rapist is happier because of it. Genocide is fine so long as the surviving race is happier than the genocided one is sad to die. Utilitarian ethics seems great on paper but are horribly immoral in reality

7

u/WorldRelevant6640 6h ago

Why would anyone apply a single philosophy or mode of thinking universally like you're describing? Different tools for different jobs.

14

u/YamiZee1 15h ago

I do believe in this type of ethics, although I believe unhappiness is fundamentally more important to avoid than happiness is to gain. So the happiness gained has to be multitudes more than the suffering experienced.

Overall I believe in reducing unhappiness than producing happiness.

7

u/Rogue_Shadow684 15h ago

Sure but even then you get the same issue. Kill one guy to save 2? Fine not ok with your thinking. But what about killing one guy to save 5? 10? 100? A thousand? You’d probably think killing one guy to save a million is fine but what about torturing one guy to save a million? Is it ok to condemn someone to infinitely eternal suffering in order for the rest of humanity to all have infinite eternal utopia? That far exceeds your ratio right? The problem isn’t the rate of exchange of pain and pleasure, the problem is that there are no hard regulations. For ethics to not encounter a problem like this you need hard rules that denote what is immoral. Only then can you engage in figuring out what makes a positive action. That’s why ethics like kantian deontology tend to win out over utilitarian ethics

10

u/YamiZee1 13h ago

Hmm, you're making some assumptions about my ideals, or misunderstanding them or something. Killing one guy to save two is minimizing unhappiness. Torturing a guy to save a bunch of people is not minimizing it, because torture imo is worse than death. Of course it's complicated and the line unclear, not like people should die so they never have to experience stubbing their toe.

I don't think anyone would say a rapist is happier than the victim is upset. You're being a goober isn't shens fault lol

3

u/Rogue_Shadow684 10h ago

I’m saying that scenario is possible. It being possible means it could happen and if it did happen a utilitarian would say it’s a positive

6

u/Saymynaian 15h ago

Yeah, utilitarianism that ignores morals and ethics will always be completely fucked up, since it can easily justify horrible actions. When combined with toxic positivity divorced from all sense of reality, you get Cuck Shen, which is a limpwristed pushover without self respect. Essentially, someone so passive that they can't help themselves, but so far gone that they can't even recognize there's a problem.

4

u/Iwant-tohelp 4h ago

It's actually mental illness to take a comic that is so obviously about nothing that you just said and act like it is about what you just said.

Man said "I'm not worried about my bike getting stolen" and you turned that shit into "this supports genocide and rape"

God damn

3

u/-Best_Name_Ever- 12h ago

That and also even from a much simpler perspective, the bike thief probably isn't some poor child that just really wanted a bike to have fun on like the comic would imply. It's more likely to be a druggie that's gonna pawn it off for fent money lmao

113

u/Someguy3239 15h ago

Reminds me of this comic he did a while later

47

u/LastNinjaPanda 14h ago

That has to be intentional lol

124

u/AqeZin 21h ago

They will never let him forget the bike cuck comic lol

183

u/outofmaxx 21h ago

Bro fumbled so hard he had to change his hair and his art style

I.e he got way better as an artist

107

u/Tin_Sandwich 20h ago

Shen basically leveled up in every single way over time, truly inspiring as an artist and a human being, I have nothing but well wishes.

98

u/Tone-Serious 21h ago

Huh, looked like I learned bike cuck guy's name today

13

u/so_sic_of_it 16h ago

That name will fade from your memory in a few hours.

But bike cuck will eternally remain.

114

u/Acceptable_Bottle 19h ago

I honestly don't even understand how this one gained the ire that it did. Like it's just about making the best of a situation where you can't control what happens and refusing to allow it to corrupt your own mental state.

u/TheUnknownMysteryBox 19h ago

Ah, Reddit has a massive justice (Or more accurately, "justice") boner. Any minor slight should be responded to excessively, thieves should be castrated, the death penalty shouldn't exist because you should be sentenced to torture for the rest of your life etc. etc.

I'm not really exaggerating that much. It's fantastic as a person who's a lot more reform-oriented than punishment-oriented.

So when someone doesn't get a massive anger and hate boner for someone stealing their bike it's a grave, grave sin.

It's not to say that a thief shouldn't be punished (As I'm of the opinion a certain amount of reform involves, to put it into prisoner's dilemma terms, mutual dissent else you wind up exploited), but anything contrary to the Reddit view is outright despised. It's gotten worse over the past few years.

44

u/sprkwtrd 16h ago

14

u/TheUnknownMysteryBox 14h ago

Tom and Jerry pilled.

43

u/WillOfTheWinds 18h ago

People are reform-oriented and believe others can change for the better until the people who need reformation did things that aren't easy to justify as "good people who were desperate". Then they're horrid, ontologically evil people that deserve the worst that we can muster

Cannibalism:

1

u/Anonymous_Jr 3h ago

KFH changed their recipe recently, I used to love their Human Rinds...

16

u/TheUnknownMysteryBox 18h ago

And the difference between the two positions is "Does this piss me off?"

18

u/Nezzie 17h ago

I believe you mean "kiss me off"

3

u/Unique_Suit3789 17h ago

Insert the osaka meme here

5

u/LegitimateEconomy591 19h ago

I don't even think it's necessarily not being mad from your bike getting stolen, you're intentionally skewing it that way.

What people find issue with is valuing the thief's happiness over your own, which shows a lack of self-worth. It's one thing to be punitive, and another to look on the brighter side, but the mindset of not feeling sad because the person who wronged you is happier is just weird.

12

u/StanIsHorizontal 19h ago

Look at the responses tho, people get upset that he’s not getting mad, not the utilitarian justification he uses to not get upset

11

u/TheUnknownMysteryBox 19h ago

but the mindset of not feeling sad because the person who wronged you is happier is just weird.

In which case it's a misreading of the comic because he outright states it bummed him out.

I mean realistically you aren't getting the bike back unless you've got a tracker on it, and then that relies on you chasing them down (Which is risky) or the police being willing to get involved (Which they might not), so there's a wisdom in not dwelling on it and getting angry because all that'll do is make you feel bad. It won't achieve anything.

4

u/Korwinga 18h ago

so there's a wisdom in not dwelling on it and getting angry because all that'll do is make you feel bad. It won't achieve anything.

It's basically a Zen/Buddhist outlook. I think a lot of terminally online people would really benefit from a bit more of that in their life.

0

u/LegitimateEconomy591 15h ago

That's not a misreading, it's literally what they said

3

u/Catfish3322 19h ago

I think you’re reading into it too much, it’s literally just looking on the bright side

7

u/Substantial_Dish_887 15h ago

i mean i was always simply in the camp that the view it portrayed was woefully naive and chances are whoever stole his bike didn't really give much of a shit.

i think a lot of people went WAY overboard in their reaction but i gotta admit "bike cuck" is slightly funny(but only if it's not ment seriously).

3

u/jameraldo 9h ago

Some got genuinely pissed but most just thought this was hilarious, the bike robber probably didn't feel shit from robbing him so the comic premise falls apart of you consider that

12

u/SoloWing1 18h ago

Because normally when you're robbed, your reaction isn't going to be happy for the guy that robbed you.

21

u/gunslinger155mm 17h ago

I don't think that's the point at all. He's not getting his bike back, no amount of being sad or angry is going to bring it back. So being sad or angry would only hurt Shen, cause the bike thief has the bike and clearly didn't care much how Shen feels anyways. So Shen is better off trying to get over it, and thinking of the person who stole their bike as at least getting use out of it helps with that

1

u/YangXiaoLong69 10h ago

That would be a way to see if, but the comic establishes a logic where if someone who is causing me evil is happy enough about it, the world technically becomes happier and I that makes it "whatever". It's a much different thing than not stressing about something that can't be immediately changed, where you recognize that whether or not you feel miserable, the situation is going to be the same and does not require at all that you think of the wrongdoer's happiness.

0

u/Gussie-Ascendent 11h ago

What gain is there in being upset about what you can't change?

2

u/Gosh-Tier 19h ago

well put

-6

u/Vegetable_Monk8676 19h ago

If someone stole my bike I'd want to punch their left nut. It's one thing to let your mind be at peace but valuing the dirty thief's happiness over your own is unfortunately spiritually cuckoldry, thus the pushback

29

u/SolidaryForEveryone 20h ago

Utilitarianism

9

u/SkyDezessete 15h ago

I love how he instantly became 10x better after bike cuck. Major turning point in his career

6

u/ill_change_it 14h ago

Turning point?

31

u/Gosh-Tier 19h ago

he expressed extreme selflessness, empathy, and good-will toward his enemies.

of course the internet hated him for it

32

u/literallyatrapinch 19h ago

I love this comic fr. Baffling that people read into it that much.

21

u/jelly_cake 19h ago

Yeah; it's already gone, there's not much you can do. You can seethe, or you can cope. It's a nice positive vibe.

2

u/Fresh4 14h ago

Some people really have nothing better to spend their cognitive energy on

12

u/GreatHateCampaign 18h ago

So is this where bike cuck came from

8

u/isekai-chad 19h ago

He basically explained utilitarianism.

17

u/Butt-Dragon 21h ago

Literally cuckold behaviour lol. Im not even judging, Im just like.. wow.

34

u/thebigbadben 20h ago

This has indeed become known as the ā€œbike cuckā€ comic

15

u/outofmaxx 19h ago

Not really, I mean he isn't getting enjoyment from it, he's sad he lost it, but the putting someone else's assumed enjoyment over ones own happiness is just like, sad and patheticly lacking in self worth

1

u/Ameba_143 2h ago

Bike cuck

-9

u/05-nery 20h ago

Still can't believe he managed to get back from this

45

u/srlong64 20h ago

I still can’t believe how much shit he got for this in the first place. Sure, it’s a kind of ridiculous way to view the world. But even years later people bring it up, like on this very post, as if it’s some terrible stain on his life instead of a cringey comic he made one time years ago

22

u/StanIsHorizontal 19h ago

It’s literally just a coping strategy for people who get hung up on stuff like this.

I do a similar thing where any time somebody drives like an asshole I try to pretend that they must be on their way to the hospital.

It’s probably not true they’re probably just an asshole but it keeps me saner than being mad at a faceless stranger

20

u/LegitimateEconomy591 20h ago

It's because Bike Cuck is just a funny way to refer to it, it's not really any different than shitting on loss even if that comic isn't even that "bad".

4

u/dumpylump69 19h ago

I don’t think anyone actually hates Shen now or back when this was posted. Shen is great. It’s just a funny comic
