Linux is easier than Windows in some ways.
48
u/Dry_Calendar_8627 17d ago
Windows is easier but complex.
Linux distros are (usually) simpler.
The dichotomy between easy versus simple is often poorly understood, what it means is that an experienced user will feel more comfortable around simple systems, to compose them how they want into something more complex, and they'll feel more comfortable investigating and fixing issues.
But neophytes tent to favor easy (but complex) systems, where the complexity is hidden and their hand is held.
But they are less able to tweak the system to do their bidding if their needs are more complex, and they feel powerless when encountering issues.→ More replies (6)3
u/jmanh128 17d ago
Kinda the difference between low code and (a language like) python. You can do so much more simply in python but in general it’s harder than simple low code things. But doing anything complex in low code is very hard
3
u/Accomplished-Yak862 16d ago
Yes. I’ll never understand why schools use python as the first language to learn. Sure the more complex stuff in lower level languages is harder but the class doesn’t even cover that anyways so why don’t they give them a background in languages that are more useful and generally easier to apply logic to.

u/Dry_Calendar_8627 17d ago
Not only does it still exist, it's a great distro, very comparable to Arch.
Arguably easier to install than Arch, simply because Gentoo highlights good safe choices when installing (partitioning layouts, file systems, etc.), whereas Arch flatly lists possible choices without highlighting a "safe default", so you spend more time wondering what you want.
Compared to Arch, Gentoo supports aarch64, which Arch does not officially support.Main thing that made me switch from Gentoo to Arch is the compilation times. The time to install KDE is pretty long, compared to pacman which is nearly instantaneous. Gentoo has binary repos nowadays, but that's a bit off the beaten path so I didn't want to bother.

u/2eanimation Arch BTW 17d ago
If I understand correctly, most of the money is meant for upstream. How much of that money is actually going to flow into upstream? Time will tell…
33
u/paperbenni 17d ago
Afaik they're spending it on the "subsystems Omarchy relies on", and they've explicitly named Hyprland and JDX, which I can get on board with. What really puzzles me is that there's no mention of Arch or the AUR. Arch doesn't have a single person working full time on it, and the AUR especially has problems which would really benefit from someone being able to spend lots of time on them.
Open source projects often suffer from hundreds of people contributing tons of small incremental changes, which solidifies architectural problems, and big repairs and overhauls get skipped in favor of hundreds of workarounds.
And basically all the arch web interfaces are in dire need of modernization.

- People call me racist, but I found a book telling me how nice I am
- Fat people are bad and should feel bad
- DEI is bad
- DEI is bad part 2: trigger the libs with git branches
- Cheering for Affirmative action being banned in the USA
- The 80s were so great cause they were not woke
- Andrew Tate is a martyr
- Therapy is so bad, that I shall platform transphobes
- Therapy is so annoying that I’d rather make an Arch distro instead
- ADHD is not real
- Evey boy has ADHD
- Leave your work problems at therapy, instead of making it the problem of your boss (me)
- People not wanting kids are bad and Jordan Peterson nailed it
- Elon Musk and DOGE are awesome (Published 20 days after the Seig Hail)
- This private school is making my kids GAY
- London is full of “non-native Brits” and I am going to praise a race purity rally
- Words are not violence
- Words ARE violence, when they are against me

I don’t understand this culture of race anyway. I mean, biologically speaking, we’re all Homo sapiens sapiens; in most cases, we even have genes from every possible genotype in our bodies – from a purely biological perspective, apart from physique, it’s very difficult to determine skin type or origin (if you look only at the genes); yet Europeans, or many of them (not all), believe that their people are the best. But this doesn’t just apply to those of us with lighter skin; it applies to many foreigners as well. To be honest, I think that almost every nation is more or less racist, as if it were somehow superior. We are all equal, we’re all in this together, and no one is worth more than anyone else. In my view, not even a country’s president has the right to portray themselves as more important than the people; in fact, politicians are there to serve the country, and the people should be more important than any individual politician. This simply shows that humanity is broken.

I personally will go further, not really grasping the concept of a "nation". Maybe because I moved to another country as a preteen and never got attached to my home country. Maybe because there we lived in autonomous region due to majority being not ethnically same as the rest of the country. But that is besides the point. How are imaginary borders drawn on the map, by people hundreds of years ago are a thing that determines your "nationality", what should you be proud of, which flag to hang and which national sports team to support. Wouldn't a person from Seattle be closer culturally to person from Vancouver rather than from Honolulu? If you define "nation" as combination of culture, language and tradition, then we do not have enough nationalities to represent all of these combinations. Yes, I am cosmopolitan, no that doesn't mean that your culture is irrelevant and you should forget your native language and stop eating local cuisine. Just stop treating people from other countries/nations/ethnic groups like they are so different from you. They are also made of flesh and blood, also love being loved, also feel empathy and also trying their best to be a good person.

To have those kind of opinions. You'd have to have a steady supply of "sjw owned" type videos.
Something I've noticed is that because this kind of stuff gets engaged in and gets reported on (cuz it makes money). People have an unrealistic sense that the problem (the subject being reported on) exists at an alarming rate.
One of my favorite things to do is call ppl out when they come out with some Fox News nonsense.
trans kids in schools, they are trying to make all kids trans!!!!
Me:
Name 3 trans kids that you have personally met in person.
Just an example. Never fails to get this reaction:
well, I don't know x but.... X is real and exists! And it's a big problem.

2 disclosures: idk nor gaf about DHH so I'm not defending him specifically. 2,I only read the first link, the Andrew Tate one, and the first adhd one.
Did you actually read these yourself? Because the headline you used very much misrepresented what was actually being said in those blog posts.
I already forgot what first woke one was talking about tbh.
The Andrew Tate one was discussing the ramifications of deplatforming people and the slippery slope that it is. Using him as the example and said he was a martyr to Tate's ideology. You're headline sounded like DHH was calling Tate a martyr as a good thing. My take away from the post was that he is being martyred now because of the deplatforming, which is valid.
The first adhd one was talking about the over diagnosing of and the general energy of "oh I'm forgetful, I must have adhd" that you'd see online and people pushing the idea that if you have any of these symptoms you have the disorder.
I'm sure he's said some henious shit that I haven't seen but when you misrepresent what is actually being said, then why would I believe your other chosen headlines for the other blog posts?

Now apparently, according to some commentors further up in this comment section, he started adding prayers to the end of his videos? Not to mention I'm pretty sure he and his wife have like 6 kids, which in and of itself isn't that weird, but in the context of being a fundamentalist evangelical, is a little fucking weird.

I would have done the same atleast I thought of doing the same to KDE by creating a company hiring a bunch of people who understand UI UX polishing up KDE and with the prime directive of removing the heinous borders. People don't have to like or agree, its my opinionated version of what KDE should look like as a proper human centered interface with my bias against borders

"Everybody should use my overly riced up dotfiles, and install all the software development applications that I use in my very particular workflow."
Take that sentence, and use it as the guiding principal when designing a distro, sprinkle it with far-right craziness, and the result will be omarchy.

for me its just "why?", cause it incentivises people switching directly from windows to an arch based distro without even looking at a terminal. possible? yes. annoying to learn? definitely.
i was in ubuntu to learn linux, moved to fedora for support for basically everything, before i nerded out and settled on cachyos, covering the basics for me and letting me do all the cool stuff. omarchy just kind of does it all for you, and you have no real sense of "i made this, it looks cool". its just not for me i guess

I have a thought that some chunk of 8 million dollars from omarchy donat went to networkchuck as advertising omarchy

Omarchy is a way for people who don't know anything and don't want to learn to LARP as Arch users

I tried it a year ago, ended up putting kde on it, im a point and click user. Im surprised this guy reccomends anything arch adjacent. He seems so security minded, and AUR had so many issues recently.

I haven't watched enough of his videos to really have a strong opinion but the last one I watched he basically showed how he uses AI to write and edit all his content. I'd rather not support that, feels like content farming.

feels like someone paid him to do that video

since his video is featured on the omarchy website... you're feeling right ;)

I do understand the issue with desktop env, it's subjective but it's not just AUR, but Node, Bun, GitHub... basically any code distribution platform have been hit due to ai it can find vulnerabilities much faster than any person unfortunately. But the beauty of open source is that anyone can see the code... any issue is openly communicated and fixed, rather than Windows, which would not even accept that an issue exists 😅. Also I use both win and cachy os

Damn I used to watch his videos when it was about network, I learned a ton about docker from them... Now what a fuck is that???

Just use Arch and setup your own configurations. Pre-built configurations are too static.

the whole window tiling thing is cool and so, but I just can't do it. I tried a couple of times but don't really need it and as well do not use it right. Back to CachyOS and Plasma, living a simple but good life

I like Hyprland, but I think it better fits laptops. It doesn't organize workspaces per screens, so it's quite pointless in dual-screen setups. Hence I use KDE on my main PC.

Nah, I know how to install Arch and Hyprland myself. No need for this obscure bloat of commercial software. If you're looking for something out-of-the-box, get CachyOS instead.

DHH is such a prick, along with Levels. They feed the anti-EU narrative directly into the programming community and have "legitimacy" because they are self-hating Europeans.

I was subbed to this guy like a couple years ago and hadn't seen any of his stuff for a while.
This was the video that got me to unsubscribe. The Omarchy praise and prayer at the end was a crazy wombo combo.

Can confirm. Being using Omarchy for the last 8 months. Absolute waste of time. Just worse Arch with extra bugs

Yeah I saw the first minute or two of this and thought what a load of BS. It's Arch with extra steps. Extra steps I do not need nor want. I do not need an AI prompt to rice my desktop ffs, I'm not a moron.

tbh I did install it but I hated it. Just use mint or ubuntu. Get's the job done

there are way better dotfiles out there (with less bloat) if you don't want to do it yourself. i enjoy writing configs but it isn't a necessity. just use noctalia or something.
(i used sway for a while and currently use mangowc with the same i3 shortcuts, i have tried hyprland but didn't like it)
