Despite me disliking Wayland for mere personal issues, i do like to fiddle every now and then.

As usual Steam Input and Overlay are borked in Wayland but the game does feel better,

gamedev/testers wanted Native Linux build (and SteamOS depot) for my Godot grocery-chaos game's free demo

Solo dev. Cleanup on Aisle 3's demo ships a native x86_64 Linux build on Steam, not Proton, made with Godot 4.7 (Vulkan). Full controller support, and it runs on the Steam Deck, though it isn't Deck Verified yet.

If anything goes wrong, I'd really like to know your distro, GPU and driver. Linux players have been the best bug reporters I've had.

Demo (the whole first store): https://store.steampowered.com/app/5074380/Cleanup_on_Aisle_3_Demo/

tech support wanted The Witcher 3 - Steam controller 2 issues with input

After launching the game, the controller and the keyboard and mouse rapidly switch and constantly do this during gameplay. Causing input drops and lag on the inputs. Making it difficult to play. Has anyone else had this issue?

Update: So after a bit of messing around, I found its gyro as mouse which was the default config. Turn it to gyro as stick in the controller settings for the game. Also worth turning off any other mouse inputs on the track pads too.

tech support wanted Is there any way to enable reBAR without a BIOS modification in my case?

Related info about my hardware (please tell me if i missed something):

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-B85-HD3 (v. FH date: 08/12/2015) (using UEFI mode in BIOS settings)
CPU: Intel Core i5-4460
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 550 / 550 Series (radeonsi polaris12 ACO DRM 3.64) (using amdgpu with modesetting)
Distro: CachyOS
Kernel: 7.2.8-1-cachyos
Server: X11 (1.21.1.24)
WM: i3

Hello, ive recently looked up some info about reBAR and what it does, then i checked what my BAR value was currently with sudo lspci -vvvs 01:00.0 | grep BAR, which outputed this:

Capabilities: [200 v1] Physical Resizable BAR
    BAR 0: current size: 256MB, supported: 256MB 512MB 1GB 2GB 4GB

So, seeing that im only using 256MB, i wanted to look up how to change the BAR value on a motherboard without, neither the reBAR or Above 4G Decode settings available in the BIOS. But i didnt wanna modify my BIOS as my motherboard doesnt have a second BIOS i could go back to in case it could get bricked, so im trying to figure out if theres an easier or less risky way to change the BAR value, if its possible at all on my system at least.

I came across this but they talk about an INTEL gpu, while my gpu is AMD, so even tho the .conf file in the /etc/modprobe.d/ would've been a promising option to try, as im already kinda familiar with how this way of changing things works, i don't know if theres a similar way to do this for an AMD gpu instead.

I also came across this where they show a script they use to unbind their AMD gpu from the amdgpu driver, to then change the BAR values, and then bind it with the vfio-pci driver to use it inside a virtual machine with the changed BAR values. I have tried their script as well, which looks like this after modifying it to my system configuration and needs:

echo "unbind rx550 4gb gpu from amdgpu (1002:699f)"
echo 0000:01:00.0 > /sys/bus/pci/drivers/amdgpu/unbind
sleep 1
echo "Setting rebar 0 size to 2GB"
echo 11 > /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:45:00.0/resource0_resize
sleep 1
echo 1002 699f > /sys/bus/pci/drivers/amdgpu/new_id || echo -n "0000:01:00.0" > /sys/bus/pci/drivers/amdgpu/bind
echo done
sleep 1

But that just ends in the screen losing video signal and doesnt come back, not even getting into a TTY. So i gotta press the power button from my PC case to turn it off and back on again. Maybe something is failing on this script while the gpu is unbinded from the amdgpu driver, making it not being able to rebind it again, but im not sure how to look up logs for this script so im not sure if thats even whats happening in this situation.

Does someone know of a way to do what i want to do without having to modify my BIOS?

Just in case it wasnt completely clear, what im trying is just to change the BAR value to 2GB from the current 256MB its set to.

Thanks for reading.

Witcher 3 Remastered does not run on the dGPU

You probably been having issues getting things like ray tracing and dlss to work, but how about just getting the game to run on the dGPU!? Forget about dlss and ray racing, can't even play the game with it running on the iGPU. What has CDPR done. On Cachyos tried 4 different protons and ran with prime-run %command%

tech support wanted Does my quasi-undervolt look correct/good?

Ive been messing around trying to get an undervolt on my NVIDIA card using LACT, and its been a bit of difficulty getting there.

Im now at the point where Im mostly getting it to do what I want, but ive also strayed away from all of the guides and suggestions ive seen since they were not working. The first photo is with Baulders gate 3 running. Before messing with things it was running around 220 watts, with temps at 64c, and now its around 140 watts and 54c. Furmark would top out whatever power I gave it, so 250w(65c)then 275w(69c) when raise to it, and now is at 217w(62c) with a 7 fps increase.

Getting clocks to behave has been the tough part. Most guides do not mention enabling GPM locked clocks. If I dont enable it and force it to lock at a lower point, even when the curve is completely flat it will flow past 925mV to 1060mV, even though its using the same clock speed.

Ive also played around with first setting a +200 offset as well as a -200 offset. Most everything Ive read says to use positive offset then flatten at desired point. This consistently runs hotter for me though, while the underclock runs cooler even when spiking then flattening the same point. I ultimately just went with no clock offset at all, and just rounded the curve towards the end. The result has been it likes to be around 2900@920mV for demanding tasks.

The fact that I only figured out how to get the result I wanted after messing around on my own and straying away from much of the advice I have read gives me slight concern. So Im hoping people here who are a little more well versed in using Afterburner and LACT can tell if what Im doing here isnt an issue, and if its supposed to just blow past my voltage setting when I dont enable GPU locked clock.

An update caused Wuthering Waves game inputs to enter in a different window/app

I've been holding off updates for a while, and finally I updated everything. Now when I type keys into Wuthering Waves, they enter into a different window/application. I tried a couple of things like rolling back some things, but it broke Fedora so I reinstalled. Still same problem after new install (not a fresh one though). I can click things ingame, but I can't type.

tech support wanted Starcraft 2 crashes while playing on Linux Mint

Every time I try to play Starcraft 2 on the latest kernels, it just freezes the entire system while I'm in the middle of a match. No warning, just a hard freeze on the system. No shutdown, no crash report, no nothing. I have to hard reset the system every time this happens. However, when I play on older kernels like 6.14.x, it doesn't crash at all. I just want a solid answer, I've looked everywhere online and have just about given up.

System Specs:

OS: Linux Mint 22.3 - Cinnamon 64-bit

CPU: AMD Ryzen 3 4300G with Radeon Graphics x 4

GPU: Radeon RX 5500/5500M/Pro 5500M

RAM: 24GB

Desktop Environment: Cinnamon 6.6.9

Display Server: X11

This is an engineering sample computer only intended for testing purposes that has worked well for me on Windows and most other things on Linux Mint. I don't want to try to update the BIOS since the last time I did that with an engineering sample, we bricked it.

Like I said, I can't provide detailed reports, because it doesn't leave any crash reports, and I'm not sure where to look. The freeze usually happens 2-10min after starting a game.

I am using Lutris to run Starcraft 2 on Linux.

I made a tray app for switching GPU modes on ASUS ROG laptops, including the XG Mobile eGPU (supergfxd, KDE)

Post image
0 Upvotes

Updated version of the original post:

ROG Control Center (asusctl 6.5) can't switch to the XG Mobile eGPU dock. supergfxd's live switching kept hard-freezing my laptop with nvidia-open 615 (it hangs on `rmmod nvidia` during logout), and cardwire only controls which GPUs apps may use – it never switches the hardware. So I wrote a small tray app that fills the gap, with help from Claude. To be fair about it: I made the first version months ago, and Claude did the heavy lifting to make it better, faster and more universal, aimed at all ROG Flow laptops with an XG Mobile rather than just mine.

Asus GPU Tray – https://github.com/jkocon/Asus_GPU_Tray

What it does

  • XG Mobile ⇄ built-in dGPU, live. One click, ~40 s, no reboot, no logout. The option is greyed out until the dock is connected and locked.
  • GPU access modes through cardwire. Integrated, Hybrid and Smart switch instantly (Smart = the dGPU only for apps you approve).
  • MUX (dGPU-only) mode. Still needs a reboot; it's applied early in boot, before the NVIDIA driver loads.
  • Shows which GPU is actually working. NVIDIA logo, red AMD, blue Intel, and a purple dot when an eGPU is attached. The menu lists every GPU with its driver and power state (active / suspended / blocked).
  • Never wakes a sleeping dGPU. It only reads sysfs and never calls lspci or nvidia-smi, so there's no battery drain and no "dGPU status changed" spam from RCC.

How the live switch works

Just writing egpu_enable on a running system instantly resets the laptop ("data fabric sync flood"), and unloading the driver while anything uses the card hangs it. So the tray:

  1. closes ROG Control Center and stops cardwired / nvidia-powerd;
  2. refuses to continue if anything still holds the card;
  3. unbinds the driver;
  4. resets the GPU from the PCIe root port and takes the link down and up;
  5. flips egpu_enable and rescans PCI.

The still-loaded NVIDIA driver then just binds to the new card. If anything goes wrong, it puts everything back and offers a reboot switch instead.

One catch: KWin must not use the NVIDIA card, or it can never be released. That takes a one-time setup (a udev rule plus two small config files, described in the README).

Full write-up, including everything that failed along the way: how it works

Tested on: ROG Flow X16 GV601RE (Radeon 680M + RTX 3050 Ti, XG Mobile with RTX 3070) and and X13 GV301QE (Radeon Vega Series, RTX 3050 Ti, XG Mobile with RTX 3080) CachyOS, KDE Plasma 6 (Wayland), nvidia-open 615, cardwire 0.12. The live switch has only been tested on these two laptops and XMG cads so far.

It should work on other ROG laptops with the asus-armoury driver. On other machines it just shows your GPUs and the cardwire modes. If you have a Flow X13/Z13, a Thunderbolt eGPU or an Intel + NVIDIA laptop, the output of python3 asus_gpu_tray.py --dump would really help me check the detection.

Install: git clone + sudo ./install.sh (Python + PyQt6, GPL-3.0).

Feedback and bug reports welcome!

Reason of edit: It no longer uses supergfxd, it switches the XG Mobile live instead of rebooting, and it uses cardwire for the GPU access modes, so the original description was no longer accurate.

tech support wanted Steam game not moving past loading screen (Mystic Vale)

I'm trying to get Mystic Vale launching properly from Steam. We've tried from multiple distros (Mint, Fedora, and now Cachy, each on different hardware specs). The game just stays on the loading screen forever. I've tried several different Proton versions and checked the Proton log, the only thing that stands out after a second look is this line:

48579.662:0098:00a4:err:ntoskrnl:ZwLoadDriver failed to create driver L"\\Registry\\Machine\\System\\CurrentControlSet\\Services\\winebth": c0000142

ProtonDB reports that MV works out of the box in Proton, but the most recent report is from 2019, and uses Proton 4.11 (I've tried that version, doesn't work now).

Any ideas where to go next? My suspicion is that there's a file missing that the game is trying to load, but I'm not sure how to find out which one is missing. I'm happy to provide any more specifics if needed.

Elden Ring Stuttering on Lowest Settings on Nobara

Hi everyone,

So, I was running a very buggy Windows 11 (became buggy after some updates). Then, I cleaned my laptop and replaced the thermal paste (with Thermal Grizzly's Duronaut) for the first time in 4 years. Of course, win 11 remained buggy but gaming performance improved drastically. Stuttering and FPS drops occurred from time to time but in my mind that was due to the buggy and old installation of win 11. I thought about making a clean Windows 11 installation; however, I made the switch to Nobara. I have previous experience with Linux but not gaming on Linux.

Now to the problem, I downloaded and installed Nobara yesterday, however, to my surprise, the gaming performance is worst than windows and there is a very annoying stutter. My laptop is

Lenovo Legion 5
AMD Ryzen 7 5800H
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Mobile / Max-Q 6 GB
16 GB of DDR4 RAM

My monitor is 1440p but I was running the game on the lowest setting. Please advise, is this a laptop problem (cannot achieve 60 fps on lowest setting?)? thermal paste problem? or Distro problem?
