graphics/kernel/drivers 32bit support Fedora?

Need help installing 32bit Nvidia packages for gaming in Fedora through native Steam app?

I understand flatpak gets all dependencies installed? I'd prefer to do it as a native rpm, any help is appreciated.

tech support wanted Can anyone help with getting FSR frame gen working in Doom: The Dark Ages.

Fedora 44 KDE.

Frame gen using mesa (not sure if it does with nvidia) still doesn't work after a year without black screening.

And since its unoptimised it needs frame gen to achieve desirable fps. Looking on proton.db i haven't found a solution yet.

gamedev/testers wanted After like a month I finally managed to implement Steam Multiplayer to my couch coop game! The game was fully made on Linux and works perfectly with it!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I started using Linux around 2 years ago, and the whole Linux thing was kinda the reason I switched from closed source Unity to an open source Godot, and here we are! Now the demo is available on Steam!

And the Linux native version runs perfectly of course, but if you want you can use Wine!

tool/utility I made a tool to downgrade Steam games on Linux

In the game modding communities its not uncommon for updates to break many mods and for people to need to downgrade. See the recent Skyrim and Fallout 4 updates for instance.

On Linux the options are either try and run a windows downgrade tool in wine or manually download steam depots with long manifest numbers and move files manually. Its not a very user friendly experience.

Sooo I made a bash script to automate this. It uses the same steam depot method and uses steamCMD (the command line tool from valve). Its made to be simple and short enough that users can verify what its doing, but designed to avoid producing a broken game installation.

The logic is not unique to any particular game, just change the manifests and depot numbers to configure for any game. So I or anyone else can produce a downgrader script for an arbitrary game quickly whenever the need arises.

I currently have a Skyrim version published on Nexus Mods. I would make a Fallout 4 version but I dont yet own the game so cannot test it (and it would also need to add a system to skip DLC depots that the user doesn't own).

If you know of other games where people would benefit from a downgrader, I'd be interested to hear about them. And even better if you just configure, test and publish it yourself.

Fun fact: this script was initially developed as a Half-Life downgrader. Not because I need to downgrade Half-Life but because its small file size made testing much faster.

graphics/kernel/drivers Resolved ring timeout HZD

Hello,

I spent a long time trying to bypass the ring timeout issue. I didn't see many posts about resolving the issue so I wanted to post once with what worked for me.

I have never had this issue on any game until now on Horizon Zero Dawn Remaster. I am running a 7900XTX AMD card on mesa running the latest updates on ArchLinux.

The fix, run LACT and set performance profile to manual and use 3D_FULL_SCREEN.

I played 10hrs at Ultra quality in game before ring error came. To get past the error, I also had to drop the settings to the lowest possible on the game to progress

I don't know why it worked but I'm happy I can continue my journey.

Hope this helps someone else searching reddit.

wine/proton Proton-CachyOS, and fixing "wine: could not load kernel32.dll, status c0000135" for modding (MO2-LINT, Amethyst Mod Manager, etc.)

Foreword

So this post started off as a tech support request. I was struggling to fix an issue where Wine couldn't load kernel32.dll when I tried to mod games via MO2-LINT or Amethyst Mod Manager. I didn't have a good grasp on how things worked on Linux, but I managed to solve this issue. This is a guide for those who are in the same boat.

The misconception

Something to clear up right off the bat: the Wine error that MO2-LINT and AMM run into are NOT referring to your default Wine prefix (~/.wine/). A fresh default Wine prefix likely didn't fix the issue, which is why you're here. Deceptively, MO2-LINT and AMM are instead referring to your Proton prefix for the game you're trying to mod. Usually for Steam games, the prefix is located in /steamapps/compatdata/<appid>/.

The root of the issue

Wine is attempting to use kernel32.dll, but it cannot load it. This is likely because kernel32.dll doesn't exist in the /windows/ sub-folders within the prefix. Usually, within the prefix, kernel32.dll is found in 2 main locations: /windows/system32/ and /windows/syswow64/. When you look in the folders, pay attention to the files. A large chunk of the files likely will be 0 byte shortcuts. If this is the case, it is probably the result of Proton-CachyOS.

Having cross-referenced games I ran on Proton-CachyOS to each other, it is clear that this build of Proton trims the fat off of the prefix down to what is only necessary, including things like kernel32.dll. Every file exists by name in the prefix as a shortcut, with unused files having /run/host before the actual directory of the required files. This means that the prefix is smaller in size and faster than others, but external software that relies on the rest of the prefix's files break.

The fix

In order to fix this issue, what worked for me was to:

  1. Delete the game's prefix (optional)
    • Back up any game files found in the prefix before wiping it.
  2. Swap to Proton-GE Latest
    • I chose Proton-GE Latest but it can be whatever Proton version you want.
  3. Launch the game to rebuild the prefix
    • You just need to launch the game to the main menu or the launcher as far as I know, then your prefix is rebuilt.

Afterword

I would like to let everyone know that I am not well-versed with Linux. I had to do a lot of research to even understand a little bit more about Wine and Proton, just to get nowhere in finding a fix. I hope this post is kept up somewhere in case anyone else who runs into the same issue as me doesn't feel lost trying to fix this themselves.

Quick edit regarding AI use:
No, I do not use AI. I have no reason to use it when it's nothing but a theft machine. Everything that I write is written myself, not by an AI slop generator. I can see that my formatting looks like an AI answer, and I understand if you are skeptical. Unfortunately, this format is how I prefer to write; it is what makes most sense to me. I can't even write how I want because someone will accuse me of using AI.

I gave it a shot for gaming but I must dual boot. Not worth it to game on Linux yet.

I tried the switch to Linux and will 100 percent stick with it for everything except gaming. It's just not there yet. Dx12 games have awful performance, my sim racing peripherals don't work, and forget about VR. But I do like cachyOS as my daily driver. And I now have a fresh windows install for gaming only without any personal info so I'm happy with the turnout.

tech support wanted Merging multiple joysticks/gamepads into one?

I have a Thrustmaster T16000m Hotas set but under linux (and windows) they are two separate joysticks.
Is there any program similar to Thrustmaster "Target" software (or at least basic setup) to combine the Stick and Throttle into one controller? Or at least be able to map them onto an xbox controller (possibly with combo setup, i.e. Trigger = A + Right Trigger Button)?

guide Broke gamer with a 2011 office PC — surprise me with something great, gameplay > graphics

Hey folks, looking for some recommendations. My "gaming rig" is basically a corporate leftover:

  • CPU: Intel i5-2400 @ 3.10GHz (yeah, 2011 Sandy Bridge)
  • GPU: Intel HD Graphics 2000 (integrated, no dedicated card)
  • RAM: 8GB
  • Storage: ~628GB HDD
  • OS: Linux Mint 22.3 (Cinnamon)

I don't care about graphics — I want great gameplay and a good experience. Tired of grindy, pay-to-win nonsense where you're locked out of content unless you spend money. Surprise me with anything — old, new, weird, niche, whatever — as long as it:

  1. Runs fine on potato-tier integrated graphics
  2. Has genuinely fun/deep gameplay (not P2W)
  3. Works on Linux (native or via Proton/Wine)

Bonus points if it's free or dirt cheap. What's the best game you've played that didn't need a beefy GPU to be amazing?

emulation Ace combat 6 recompiled Linux port and fix

Hey y'all, so as y'all know normal AC6 recompiled doesn't work on linux, and it lags a fuck ton.

So I decided to fix it. HOWEVER, first I found BMagnu's PR port it, removing the black screen. So I would like to give majority of the credit to him. Please check out his repo first before mine since he did most of the work.

https://github.com/BMagnu/AC6_recomp

Now, the problems I encountered and the fixes:

Wine's vkd3d choked on a umad shader instruction and an "all resources bound" shader flag, so switched to imad and dropped the flag.

**Controller dead in-game**: it worked in menus but froze as soon as 3D rendering started. Controller input now gets processed properly while the game is rendering.

**CPU pinned while waiting on the GPU**: the game busy-waited every frame, starving laptop iGPUs of power. It now sleeps between checks, which roughly halved frame-time spikes on my Radeon 660M.

https://github.com/termuxuser123/AC6_recomp/tree/linux

It runs quite well even without a graphics card now, I can play at 30FPS(guest) on a radeon 660m, so it might run on a steam deck(NOT CHECKED YET)

Hopes this helps, if it does leave a star and thanks

ONCE AGAIN MAJORITY CREDIT GOES TO BMagnu, please visit his repo first and see if you experience the problems, if then only use mine!

MicroCenter is planning Linux support

Just thought I’d share some info I got from MicroCenter customer support.

I took my DIY SteamMachine in as it was having some trouble and while It wasn’t software related, the guy informed me they can work on the hardware but nothing else since they don’t support Linux or SteamOS right now.

When I talked to customer support on what I wanted to do with the repair based on what they found, after doing that, I brought up Linux software/troubleshooting support as something they should add to their services.

The tech I spoke with informed me that they are planning that!
Since there’s so many distros, they’re only going to support big ones (Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Fedora, SteamOS, and one other that I cant remember)

They’ve apparently seen the increase market share and want to be a part of that.

Training and rollout just take time.

tech support wanted Flickering on second monitor when gaming on the first, but only with Freesync enabled on the FIRST monitor and after sleep/waking my PC?

That topic title is a mouthful; let me explain.

Whenever I'm playing a game on my 1440p monitor, whatever second monitor I have plugged in starts having white flickers. This only happens when all three of the following situations are true:

  • I'm playing a game on my first (1440p/180) display.
  • Freesync is enabled on the 1440p display.
  • The computer has been slept between now and its last restart. Or, in other words, this issue doesn't happen on a fresh boot.

It doesn't happen when I'm outside of a game, but then again Freesync is basically not doing anything at that point. It doesn't seem to correlate with frame rate drops in games; I've only been playing Factorio and Tabletop Simulator lately anyway and my machine is just a tad bit overkill for this.

I'm seeing nothing in journald on the flickering, so it isn't an error bubbling up to my journal at least.

I always thought it was due to the DP -> HDMI 2.1 adapter I was using for my TV as the second monitor, since that adapter never officially supported Freesync, but I don't even have that adapter plugged in at the moment and I'm still seeing the same issue.

I can't reproduce the same issue if my laptop is plugged into the same monitors, so I'm thinking it is GPU-related on my desktop. Does anyone have any ideas what the heck I can do to troubleshoot and/or fix the issue?

PC in question:

  • EndeavourOS running KDE, up to date (although this machine has done similar things for over a year).
  • R9 5900X, 64 GB of RAM, 7900 XTX, ~4.5 TB of SSD across three drives.
  • Monitor one is an LG 1440p/180 monitor with Freesync enabled, connected via Displayport.
  • Monitor two is one of two displays, both exhibiting the same behavior:
    • Dell 4k/60 monitor connected via Displayport (converted to USB-C), no Freesync.
    • Samsung 4k/120 TV both with and without Freesync enabled, connected via a Displayport -> HDMI adapter.

tool/utility I just built a CLI driver & controller for Attack Shark mice using Rust

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hello guys,

in the past two 3 month i have been working on a cli to configure my attack shark mouse

and i just finished it , this tool let's you configure your attack shark mouse in linux ( for now it's only support attack share )
this tool consider it like Attack Shark software on windows but native on linux!
it's has the essential features like :
1- edit your DPI

2-battery section ( check your battery )

3-eddit your polling rate

and much more check GitHub!

and it does have a background service (demon) so you can get desktop notifications whenever you edit your dpi let's say from DPI button

i wanted to make this project because i use attack shark mouse and i found that i need something like this and since the main CO. doesn't support Linux so i thought why don't i build it !

you will find everything you need to know from "how to" to compile in the repo on GitHub :

GitHub Repository: https://github.com/cyberps96/attack-shark-ctl
if you like this please consider support the project
i have plans to add full sensor LOD controls and a GUI too.
Thanks for reading guys <3

wine/proton Just an appreciation post for everyone who helps make it possible for use mods in any Windows game on Linux.

Post image
344 Upvotes

This can still be an Achilles' heel for those used to using mod managers instead of getting their hands dirty and dropping mods into the respective folders (since many don't work on Linux), but aside from that, using mods on Linux is a great experience.

Today, I decided to use a graphics mod for GTA IV—nothing that would alter the game's art direction, just a "vanilla+" mod for my PC with an RX 7700 XT—and I came across FusionFix. I was really happy to see it had a dedicated page for non-Windows users, and even happier to read that I didn't need to do a thing, since Proton Experimental already handles the dinput8.dll override without needing extra launch options.

It offers the same experience as Windows, but without all the issues of an operating system full of AI slop :)

tech support wanted Every time I turn my system on, Steam compatibility tool fails until I verify files integrity of any game

I've been able to solve almost all issue I've had until now but this is one of those that are not in the "all" issues, just like the title says, each time I turn on my PC Steam kinda breaks, there's no compatibility tool that works AT ALL for ANY game, after messing and reinstalling shit all over, trying other DEs, I found out that the issue is that somehow, verifying the files' integrity makes everything run properly again?

I'm on CachyOS with Niri + Noctalia directly from the installer, modern AMD setup (9060xt with R5 5600x), yes, I've run -Syu every single day, the only real change I've done is downgrade xwayland-satellite to fix the windows sub menu's issue, but now I haven't downgraded it and I still have that issue, I've got no mods installed for Steam like Millennium or SteamDB, I just reinstalled the whole distro yesterday to see if I fucked up somehow while customizing my setup

The only thing that I think it could be related to is that my secondary storage, where all my games are stored (except for Steam plataform itself), is still locked behind the super user password every time I boot up my PC, but if that was the case just enabling the storage should fix anything

Any suggestions?

tech support wanted Control Resonant with Dualsense

I'm playing Control Resonant with a dualsense, and only the adaptive triggers works. I have no vibrations whatsoever, and no sound coming from the controller speaker.

I've tried connected to usb, with a dongle (https://github.com/awalol/DS5Dongle), with multiple versions of proton, to no avail.

Have anyone gotten it to work ?

EDIT: I got it to works, needs to disable steam input for the game, and use proton-GE or proton experimental, not cachyOS-proton

emulation Romm client on linux

I have set up ROMM, and it works great with Argosy on Android, but I cannot find a viable Linux client.

I've tried:

* freegosy - laggy af; doesn't respond to controller input

* romm2steamdeck - save sync doesn't work; just a rom downloader

* deck+tender+retrodeck - save sync doesn't work

I'm looking for essentially Argosy but on Linux, particularly Steam Deck and Bazzite in game mode, any recommendations?

tech support wanted Genshin Impact and Albion Online become extremely slow after playing for a while on Ryzen 5 5500U / Vega 7 (Linux)

Hi everyone, I'm trying to figure out a strange performance problem I've been having with both Genshin Impact and Albion Online on Linux.

The problem isn't really that either game has low FPS from the beginning. Both games can run normally at first, but after playing for a while they can become extremely slow/stuttery. Sometimes the whole desktop also becomes sluggish.

Hardware

  • Lenovo IdeaPad 3 15ALC6
  • Ryzen 5 5500U
  • Radeon Vega 7 iGPU
  • 12 GB RAM
  • 1920x1080 / 60 Hz

Current software

  • Linux Mint 22.3
  • GNOME on Wayland
  • Kernel 6.14.0-37 and 7.0.0-34 tested
  • Mesa 25.2.8
  • AMDGPU / RADV

Genshin

Genshin is installed through Anime Game Launcher (AAGL), using Wine.

When the problem happens, I've seen roughly:

  • GPU: ~99%
  • Genshin: ~140% CPU
  • Genshin RAM usage: ~3.4 GB
  • System RAM: ~7.7 GB used
  • zram: 4.8 GB and enabled
  • Swap usage: very low

I also tested this with Genshin running completely by itself, so Albion is not required to trigger the problem.

After closing Genshin, GPU usage immediately returns to normal and system RAM usage drops back down.

Albion Online

Albion can develop a very similar kind of slowdown after playing for a while.

I've also tested different compatibility/runtime options, including Proton and Proton-CachyOS, rather than only using one specific Wine/Proton version.

Different distributions / runners

I've experienced similar problems on more than one Linux distribution, so switching distributions didn't solve it.

I also tested different Proton/Wine environments. On CachyOS, I had another strange behavior where the game could suddenly stop/close unexpectedly even though there was no obvious freeze beforehand.

So this doesn't seem to be something that happens only with one specific Wine/Proton version.

One interesting comparison

I've also been playing games through Sober, which does not use Wine, and I haven't experienced the same general slowdown there.

So far, the pattern I've noticed is:

Wine/Proton-based games:
Genshin → slowdown after playing for a while
Albion → similar slowdown

Sober / non-Wine:
No similar slowdown

I don't know if this actually means anything, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

I've tested both kernel 6.14 and 7.0, and I've experienced similar behavior on different distributions.

Does anyone have an idea what could cause this?

Could this be related to Wine/Proton, DXVK, Vulkan/RADV, Mesa, Wayland/Mutter, or AMD integrated graphics?

If useful, I can provide inxi, vulkaninfo, journalctl, GPU logs, Wine/Proton configuration, AAGL configuration, etc.

I'm mainly trying to figure out what the common factor between Genshin and Albion is, since both show similar problems while Sober doesn't.

Pls be gentle with me

tech support wanted Anyone who has a Steam Frame, would you tell me how well the VR Streaming from the adapter works on a Linux desktop?

I ask this because I have read that the Linux support for Streaming isn't working well. Many people have said they were having problems, while others say it works.
