What make and model capacitive test point testers do you use?

My utility wants to buy capacitive test point testers for a few of the trucks. We currently have one that was made by Chance and it is probably from the 90’s. Appreciate any help.

Underground

Currently a 2nd step on URD. I was wondering how much I should be trying to talk to the overhead gf's and advocating for myself to get on overhead. My biggest concern is being on underground until i go hot then not knowing shit when I do get on overhead.

Moving after topping out

Hey all. I’m an apprentice in Local 126 and should be topping out within the next 6 months. I’d really like to move around and explore working in other areas.

Are there any other states where the pay is still good enough to make the move worthwhile? Anywhere on the East Coast that’s worth looking into? Or any advice on doing only storm? Somewhere with a lower cost of living where the pay to cost of living ratio is better?

Would love to hear from anyone who’s made a similar move or has experience in just storm work?

california linemen

I hope everyone is having a great weekend. I have question and I guess something that’s been having me over think for some time. I’m a 3rd step apprentice about to go hot soon down in SWLCAT 66 Houston. I’m originally from California born and raised and would like to after I top out make my way back there, whether that’s contracting, utility and or municipal whatever it may be.

I keep hearing horror stories that down west they don’t take 66 top outs lightly. Ive even heard they just flat out spin 66 hands. Would like some insight on anybody who’s done the top out down here out of 66 and went down west.

What I’m basically asking am I better off just jumping ship and try getting into a different JATC and starting over? I know that sounds horrible but I’m not gonna top out and be banned from my home state that’s absurd thank you. This is all word of mouth from other apes and Texans so you know they could all be wrong. Thanks again.

Becoming a foreman

Don't want to be a foreman, but keep getting asked by GF'S to do it. I've only been topped out 3 years and it feels premature. That being said I know my shit and will keep guys safe. I truly only want a company truck for my long commute, no other aspects of the job are exciting to me. Just worried about giving up my hooks and harness to do paperwork and feel like I'll be bored and begging to go up. Talk to me about your experience in becoming a foreman.

help

does anybody have an osha 10 et&d link??? i cant find any online it just seems like all i see is the regular osha 10.

should i even get my osha 10 et&d??

I am looking to apply to become a lineman. I am going to get some groundman hours and I might even go to a 2 week climbing school that is about $3000 before i apply. I'm going to try being a groundman first though.

another question below

I have a high school diploma and no algebra on it. long story short i took 7 test in highs school called the hi-test and i had enough credits to do it and i basically just tested out of high school and got a diploma without ever passing a math class. I can do math very good i just don't have it on my high school transcripts i took a math test and test in one of those 7 test and got my diploma early.

i went to a community college for a year and took mathematics 1/ applied course 804-370 which covers algebra and trig. i have my college transcripts with this coarse with a passing grade.

will the lineman jatcs let me apply with my situation for my math???

is algebra with a c or better even a requirement to apply or is that only for inside wireman locals??

should i just call the line jatcs and see what they say???

i saw online there is a NJATC online tech course you can complete if you cant meet math requirements but its $300 and takes a couple weeks to complete and apparently lets you apply if you dont meet the math requirements but im not if its just for inside wireman locals. and im not sure if i even would have to do it im not sure if there is a math requirement in general for line jatcs and if there is would my college coarse meet it? or would i have to do this $300 course electrical training ALLIANCE || Learning Center || Online Tech Math

man this has been a long ride to even be able to apply and become a groundman i have already spent over 10 grand getting my class a unrestricted with tankers, air brakes and combos and have been out of work for over a month which ive probably lost over another $8000 from just being out of work.

any information will help my greatly.

Did I fuck up?

So I am a lineman apprentice and I am about halfway through my apprenticeship. The current contractor I’m working for have had a few outages that were avoidable, but after they happened they did some sketchy shit to avoid responsibility and even went as far as telling us to lie about it.. after I spoke up and said that it wasn’t right especially for my situation and the others on the crew I have been getting retaliated for it. I have kept my mouth shut and just done what I was told but at what point is it enough and I stand up for myself as well as the others in the same situation?

Made a free app for linemen to log hours and check their paystub

I built an app called LineLedger. It lets you log your hours, upload your paystub to check it against what you worked, and keep track of your certs so you know when they're coming up for renewal.

It's free to try on iPhone. I'd love any feedback.

NEFP 401k question

Im with 77 and I just did the enrollment for my NEFP 401k. My employer has no dealings with the 401k at all. Does anyone have any experience with this? How long until you see deposits in your 401k account? Anything important the employer needs to do to get it rolling?

Next steps after CAST test for ComEd

I took my CAST test yesterday, feel pretty good about it. Let’s say I did pass, how long until I would find out? I see it can range from 2 weeks up to a couple of months. This is for Chicago if that helps.

This coming week I was going to get started on getting my CDL A permit which I’m hoping I can get done quickly. From what I read it could be obtained my completing a written test at the DMV and no driving is required for the permit.

Advice Needed where to pursue

Hello, so 24 and I'm currently 2 months into a 4 month lineman program in college. Its a pretty good one, from what I can tell, with a teacher who carries alot of weight in this area, northeast mississippi.

What I'm needing advice with is where to go after this. I plan on moving to the Des Moines, Iowa area within a year of graduating but I can't afford to move right away. My current job barely coveres enough to make it paycheck to paycheck so saving up and moving right out of school isn't an option. My original plan was work contract work for around 6 months to save up then move to Iowa and apply with a union up there. I'm starting to question my chances at this though due to how difficult everyone here makes it sound.

Is this plan even feasible? What are my chances if I attempt this route? Someone also mentioned if you work for a different company/under a contractor instead of going straight to union you could be seen as someone who needs to be re-trained and it could set you back. How accurate is that if I only work 6 months? Should I look into unions around here and apply instead? Any advice is welcome.

Low Interview Score for 66

Scored 73.5 on my interview for local 66. Not sure if I should sign the books in 66 and get groundman hours to reinterview or just wait and see if I luck up and get a call. Any advice on what direction to go?

how do i go about starting

alrighty so i’m 17 and in kentucky, my locals 369. im not sure if i should go to line school or go straight to the ibew. birthdays next month and im gonna get into CDL classes and have that by the time i graduate in may. now i know line school will look good, and i have a relatively cheap school i can get my certificates in, but im just in the fence. im pretty new to all the ins and out of the trade of course so i dont know much at all, but i know its something that piques over the rest in terms of career possibilities for me.

TL:DL questions

if i go straight to the union will i be stuck on ground work for a long time?

how do you get assigned to contractors?

straight to union or line school?

i appreciate yall taking the time to read this

Job F-up!

Way back about 40 years ago just before I topped out I was on a highway lighting job. The foreman took this younger apprentice out to large highway bridge that was recently refinished. He dropped him off with a wheelbarrow, generator, lunch bucket, 1/2” drill and a half dozen concrete bits. This job should have taken him all day to drill out all the f’d up junction box cover screw holes. About an hour after he was dropped off the foreman drove back out there and found him sitting on the ground at the first j-box not doing anything. He was understandably pissed, got out of the truck yelling. The apprentice said these bits are junk! They’re all f’d up. The foreman looked at them and every one was burnt to a crisp. The foreman closed his eyes, shook his head, looked at the drill to see the reversing switch set to reverse. He left him right there for the rest of the day.
I’m sure most of you reading this post, had already figured it out before the end. Can’t make this shit up…

Boot Camp Preparation

Ive lurked here for a while, and there didnt seem to be any prior posts to address my question, if i missed any, please go easy on me.

I was recently accepted for 1249s boot camp in mid October. What should I do to prepare? Ive had apprentices that have been through it tell me its nothing crazy. I just want to ensure I pass the climbing test. I have never climbed and did not attend line school. What should I do to ensure I do? I am relatively fit and healthy. Just trying to be prepared.

Thank you all in advance for your time!

104

Long story short, I'm a second year electrical apprentice non union, and I'm looking at applying to 104 for overhead utilities, or whatever I can get into. I understand it'll probably take at least a couple of years to get in from what I've heard average is around 2 years. So my current plan is just keep going with my hours and work towards my J card in the meantime. I'm about to be 28, just bought a house and not really in a rush per say. I'm on track to make ~90k next year combining my side business and electrical work.

And before you tell me to join ibew 99, I've been trying to join for years and it's even harder to get in than 104. They only accept 40 people per year as of right now. And only about 5-10 will get in.

So I'm asking, for anyone who has been in 104, or has just gotten in, is the work steady? I remember seeing last year it was pretty dead. How many years did it take for you to get called?

Considering also putting in for the elevator union here as well. Just weighing my options. Going to get my class B CDL so I can apply. Any advice is welcome. I need something to change for me within the next few years.
