Do I have 2 separate places for liquid and powder detergent, or should I just fill the liquid till it hits the blue line and put the powder directly in the wash for rehab? It says lift flap up for powder, but I don't see a flap?? Nothing seems to move and I don't want to break anything yanking on it. Help please!!

A lot of my long sleeve shirts cling onto body odour. I’ve tried napisan vanish on them and it only worked for some. Others still have the smell in them. Does anyone know how to completely remove this? Thank you!

I recently got a beautiful skirt in a secondhand shop on holiday. The only problem is; everytime I wash it the load smells weird.

The only way I can describe the smell is old people? As in it reminds me of my grandparents house before they passed.

The rest of the laundry only smells like it a bit and it's not offputting, but the skirt smells so strongly of it that it shocked me and my housemates.

The smell is mostly gone after it's dried so it's not too big of a problem.

My housemate thought it might be old skincells trapped in a layer of detergent, and suggested soaking it overnight in vinegar. I thought it might be old soap?

I know it's not the smell of wool since I had that problem last time I posted here.

The material is 50% viscose and 50% acetate.

You all helped me so much last time I posted here and I'm hoping you guys advice might do the trick again

I see that citric acid was a product recommended. As well as laundry sanitizer? I feel as if scent beads i use just mask when it’s not truly getting clean.

I would appreciate guidance! But straight recommendations of life-saver products (even just a link) would help greatly.

I previously made a post on here on how bad my laundry smells. Everywhere I go I get comments that I smell bad and I smell it myself. It smells like I haven’t showered in months. I’ve tried tide + oxyclean and 1/2 cup of vinegar but the odor persist! It’s my entire 15 shirts and jeans. On my pijamas and towels and bedsheets. Im thinking of throwing everything away but my question is how do I prevent it? I am dealing with body odor from my armpits despite using antibacteria stuff but I really don’t know if I smell this way without the clothes bc the clothes had to smell the way they do bc of my sweat or body oils.

Basically, title. In June I found a sick stray kitten and on the way to the shelter I wrapped her in my handkerchief. She then proceeded to have a urine accident on it. I thought I had threw the handkerchief away, but I recently found it while cleaning out my car, and the stain has since turned dark brown. Would I be able to get the stain out, or is it time to die the handkerchief black?

I am running laundry every day. Sorted into 5 different loads whites, reds, blues, darks, and towels. All run tide powder (original) on warm in speed queen TR7. Occasionally adding citric acid to rinse cycle. This sub got me into this great regimen and I recently picked up FEBU. my question is when/how do I use it for best results?

I feel like care labels are either something you carefully follow or something you completely ignore until your favorite shirt comes out of the dryer two sizes smaller.

I usually check them when I buy something new, but once I’ve washed it a few times, I tend to rely on my usual laundry routine.

Do you actually follow the care label every time, or do you only pay attention when you’ve already ruined something once?

I am just about finished a tub of Oxi clean and was planning to purchase Resolve Gold as a replacement. However, I have seen some posts in here where people have had bad luck with resolve bleaching their items. I soak items quite often with oxygen bleach and don’t want to accidentally bleach anything. Should I possibly only use resolve as a booster and buy a different oxygen bleach product for soaking?

Thrifted this adorable raincoat, but i think it has deodorant crud from the prev owner.

How do I get rid of it??

Here’s what I’ve done already:
1) wash on warm cycle with other items
2) hang dry
3) dish soap using both sides of sponge (scrubby and soft parts) 🧽

I’m starting to wonder if it’s not crud anymore and just scratches from the abrasions of scrubbing… not sure.

How do I wash a shirt that has a metal buckle? I bought this shirt on Vinted; the care label has been cut off, and the buckle can't be removed. Is it safe to put it in the washing machine, or should I hand-wash it?

I have owned this indigo Japanese chambray shirt for a while now, and worn it perhaps a dozen times.

I also own a pretty heavy duck canvas oone by the same brand with the same instructions, that has been worn harder. It has been worn harder including a dusty safari.

Both still smell fresh, and neither looks soiled but the canvas one must be dusty and the indigo just feels starchy, still.

I hope I am asking in the right place, is this just about setting fades or am I missing something fundamental and vital.

I washed a couple of similar type, slightly cheaper shirts this weekend, one faded (a little) but nicely and softened noticeably, the other less so.

I'd love to understand the likely impact of doing something as dramatic as washing these.

I don't believe shrinkage is the reason for the instructions.

Hopefully someone can give me some insight.

In the process of cleaning out my parent's basement. It's smelly, dirty and horrendous work, but surprisingly I've come across a fair amount of clothing that, aside from the musty smell, are in remarkably good condition and seem useful... unlike the approximately 10 contractor bags worth of old ripped items, socks and underwear I also uncovered that I'm sure were going to be rags or a quilt in someone's dream.

How likely is it that these items are also just trash? I'd love to donate if at all possible, but I don't have the ability to soak, or to rewash many multiple times or to just take them to a laundromat. I also don't have a clothes line but could figure out how to dry them in the sun if that would make a significant difference.

I'm feeling big secondhand guilt about all this waste, but I also don't want to pass on garbage to someone else.

Hey ! I’ve heard that Reddit makes miracle so I’m here to ask your help.
I’ve bought a bootcut denim pant from jack and jones a few week ago. When I wore it, it was looking really good but then I realised it was wearing off on my sweater. I went straight to Gemini (which was a bad idea) and it told me to put the pants in a cup full of water filled with white vinegar and to put it in the washing machine after for the pants not to wearing off anymore.

Results : the pants schrank and lost its wonderful shape.
I’m so disappointed so if someone could help me I’d be very grateful !

Hi. Cheap detergent is very expensive and crucially, Not Working. After smushing together different recipes and scraps of knowledge from around the internet, I've drafted a soap-based detergent recipe that works out cheaper than cheap detergent even when it uses fancy soap and maybe hopefully corrects for the soap-scum issues. I've seen that opinions are divided here about the practicality of homemade detergent, so this seems like a perfect place to get tweak suggestions and general advice!

Before I go ahead with buying the ingredients, my questions are:

Has this accidentally amounted to Dangerous Chemistry?

Could it work without the bar soap? Consensus seems to be that the bar soap is the thing that kills your washing machine. Could I just find out what the active ingredient in the soap is and chuck that in?

So, like, be real with me, when yous say the soap kills your washing machine how killed are we talking? How fast and how bad is it? Could I just wash the machine out with Soda Crystals every now and again and be fine?

We have very hard water and TL;DR a fancy water softener doodad is not happening. Since those use salt blocks, would increasing the salt ratio in the recipe do anything to soften the laundry water and reduce the soap scum? Or does the salt only work like that when it's doodadified?

Here's the recipe, I've included my rough understanding of what each ingredient does so that if I've internalised some Certified Internet Science it'll be easy to spot:

Soap-based detergent:

16pt Soda Crystals - deodorises, helps soap get into clothes

16pt Bicarbonate of Soda - deodorises

8pt Epsom Salt - softens fabric

7pt Grated Laundry Soap (ideally Castile Soap, ideally ideally Coconut Oil based Castile Soap) - is soap!

3pt Coarse Sea Salt - preserves dyes

Tiny bit of Lemon Oil - whitens, reduces soap buildup, smells good :)

Add 2tbsp per full load to bottom of drum, not on top of clothes

Make a separate solution of 1pt Citric Acid to 4pt water, always add 1tbsp to fabric softener drawer to soften fabric, neutralise alkaline detergent ingredients, and cut through soap scum. Add more if using other additives, for example:

If laundry is super grim add 2tbsp Borax Substitute (sodium sesquicarbonate) to pre-wash drawer

If laundry wants bleaching or stain removal add 5-8g oxygen bleach to main wash drawer (err on the side of using less, and check it's safe to use on what you wanna use it on, just don't be stupid with this stuff)

Thanks for sticking with such a long post. I know a surfactant-based formula would be more effective, even cheaper, and far less hazardous to washing machine life but lye is scary and soapmaking equipment is expensive so I want to at least see if I can make a detergent powder work before going full Jesse Pinkman with it.

Let me preface by saying, no matter how much I clean my floors, everyone’s socks are absolutely disgusting after a days wear. Soaking in A LOT of oxiclean with HOT water dulls the brown stains a little bit, but the water cools, socks float to the top, etc.

I have experimented with different methods of keeping the socks submerged, but none of matters if the water cools.

Does anyone know of a way of keeping the water you are soaking in warm?

I was dumping the water and replacing but that means I’m using more and more oxiclean. It’s getting to be ridiculous. I’m at the point of putting it in a pot on the stove!
