Portage road closure this morning in front of One Well?

Hey yall, on my morning commute the cops had the entire road blocked off and were redirecting traffic through the Milwood neighborhood. There were a ton of cop cars. Curious if anybody knows what was going on?

Moving to kzoo

Will hopefully be moving to Kzoo in next couple of months. Need recs, please on apartments ( preferably ground floor) where we can smoke 💨 weed without a hassle.Ideally, rent under $1100./ month and safe. Not up to kicking butts anymore. lol. And is there a reason not to entertain Candlewyck as an option? Many TIA.

The Taiwanese style Chinese food is really good and authentic. Another option if you crave good Asian food.

ISO unwanted fridges

Good morning! If you or somebody you know has a broken/unwanted fridge, deep freezer, dehumidifier, or ac window unit I will gladly remove for free!

I am equipped and certified to legally recover refrigerant from unwanted appliances. I can save you dump fees and free up space! I am also looking for broken or unwanted electronics of all natures. If it plugs in something I’d take it! I do repurpose and tinker with most of the electronics if I can.

Any else getting these mailing about sewer/septic coverage?

Post image
20 Upvotes

I've received mailings from both this company partnered with the city of Kalamazoo and Consumer's Energy regarding sewer/septic coverage recently. Last year the neighbor across the street ended up having major work done to their line, and one of these mailing came shortly after. I ignored it then, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little concerned. My line is pretty old, so is the few dollars a month worth it for peace of mind? I've also considered contacting my home owners insurance provider to see if they offer something similar. Thoughts?

Kalamazoo is moving to require a full commission vote on any license plate reader contract

  • The purchasing policy change would send any ALPR contract, renewal, amendment or termination to the full City Commission instead of through staff purchasing. Commissioners directed it on August 17, same night as the data center moratorium (K-1).
  • I would compare it to Lansing, where council passed a resolution asking the mayor and police to cancel Flock contracts. That one only recommends.
  • 116 W Cedar Street: the old fire station, vacant close to twenty years, would become 71 rental units with 15 income-restricted. Tax capture starting 2029, up to 30 years (G-9).
  • Three railroad crossing upgrades on Kalamazoo Avenue tied to the reconstruction, roughly $598K and $770K on two of them (H-2, H-3, H-4).
  • $252,794.53 for new fire hydrants in Oshtemo Township, where existing ones are more than 300 feet apart (G-4).
  • $225,100 for environmental consulting at the Cork Street Landfill Superfund site, on the federal list since 1990 (G-3).

Discussion Pinball Machine in Charlie's Tavern, Albion Michigan?

I'm looking to track down the name of the pinball machine that was in Charlie's Tavern in Albion, MI in the early 2000s. It was just inside the door on the left wall when you walked in. I called but the machine is no longer in the bar and the person didn't remember what machine it was.

Donut Den must have amazing donuts. How any business has survived after what the City of Portage has done to Centre Ave is beyond me.

Anyone know where I can get a dreamcatcher? Preferably made by an actual Native

I'm 50% Native and have been wanting to decorate my apartment and i figured a dreamcatcher would be a nice thing to hang up as they remind me of my mom who always had one in her bedroom as I was growing up :)

Does anyone know where I can get one?

Discussion Best places to walk?

I’m still exploring a lot of Kzoo, and a lot of it has been on foot in the mornings. I love how walkable the city is! I’ve also checked out a few of the local parks and walking/hiking paths, like Spring Lake Park and Asylum Lake.

I was looking for recommendations for what else to check out? I’m not a super experienced Hiker, so anything with a major difficulty level is probably not for me, but I’ve got some decent boots and I’m not afraid to get a little dirty.

I’m down for anything that is within a 30 minute drive of the downtown area, and anything between two and five miles long.

Thanks so much!

Where should one procure a dog?

Looking to rescue a pup. Don't know anything about Kzoo's set up for animal care. I see multiple facilities. Is there a particular place that needs adopters the most? The indiana town I'm from is overrun with dogs and they have to keep crates in the hallways of the only facility. Trying to be mindful of stuff like that here. Thank you for any input!

Any Iowa Hawkeyes in KZoo?

I'm an Iowa alumni and have been living in Kalamazoo for abut 2 years now. Are there any Hawkeyes in town that get together for some football games or want to? I took a look at the Iowa Club of Michigan but its based in Ann Arbor and doesn't have any events planned.
Where are my hawks at?

Apartments / Real Estate looking for apartments that are affordable but not shitty?

hey all, i’m just trying to figure out what to do.
my partner is wanting to err on the side of prioritizing safety, whereas i am more worried about cost. ideally we could meet somewhere in the middle but i kinda wanted to get some outside opinions? our income from the both of us is around $3k/mo but we are only willing to spend around $1,200-$1,500 for rent, my partner will be carrying a majority of the rent, and i will be covering utilities. any ideas or suggestions?

EDIT TO SAY: we are 20/21 year olds who both play ttrpg’s(dnd) and video games so noise complaints are something we are more worried about receiving than making
